In this interview, we are taking a deep dive into EMDR- eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy- with EMDR expert Melissa Spaulding, CMHC! Melissa is a trauma therapist, certified EMDR therapist, and EMDRIA approved consultant. She has also personally worked with people with neural circuit dizziness. In this interview, we talk about why EMDR, along with other experiential therapy modalities like IFS and AEDP, can be so helpful for people who are going through dizziness. We cover why chronic dizziness can be traumatic for people, how EMDR works, what a session looks like, and why it’s critical that an EMDR therapist be trained in multiple modalities.

00:00:00 Intro and about Melissa
00:03:45 Why trauma therapy helps with mindbody symptoms even without another trauma
00:05:45 Why a head-heart-body approach is required (talking about it is not enough)
00:09:28 We often have multiple layers of experiences; how to tell if you need a head-heart-body approach
00:11:28 What constitutes trauma and why having symptoms can be traumatic
00:17:31 People struggling often minimize their pain; your nervous system only know safe vs not safe
00:19:17 What EMDR is and why it works
00:25:25 We don’t learn and heal in the absence of safety
00:27:08 What EMDR therapy sessions look like; in all therapy, it is normal for things to get worse temporarily before they get better
00:33:30 The goal of therapy is to help someone make meaning out of an experience
00:36:17 How EMDR helps with earlier events that have sensitized the nervous system
00:40:30 An EMDR therapist needs to have skills at breaking down complex experiences
00:41:50 Melissa’s thoughts on how to find a good EMDR therapist
00:44:10 Dr. Yo’s experience with clients struggling to find a good therapist
00:48:29 EMDR is not meant to be used in isolation so you should always choose a practitioner who has multiple skills
00:52:29 Melissa gives an example of when using multiple modalities is important
00:59:29 Therapy should be a process of rebuilding trust in yourself

Dr.Yo. I appreciate how you let your guests speak. TY😊
Thank you 🙏🏼 ❤ I do therapy with EMDR, as well as watch Dr Yos videos. I have all of the somatic tracking videos saved for easy access, as well as other exercises. Again, just want to thank you for all of your hard work, Dr Yo, for helping all of us on our recovery journey! I wouldn’t know where to turn otherwise, you are truly special. Grateful for your channel.
Thank you for these kind words! It is truly my privilege!
I feel grateful to have found this channel. I suspect I’ve been dealing with MdDs on and off for several years now. I’ve been symptom free for over a year but just got back from a long trip to NYC and was nervous to retrigger myself. Unfortunately due to the stress of the elevators and traveling etc I have and it’s been so long since I’ve had symptoms I feel very scared. I’m hoping I can recover and get back to feeling well.
Hang in there. I know it’s a scary time. This is a brain error and it can be corrected.
I love the des ription of trauma. Its not so much what happened, but how its affecting us. So often ppl want to dismiss what they see as little trauma and that is not ok.
Thankyou both for this ❤
Wow! So much useful information given in this interview. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome, Jamie!
Wow….found you today Dr. Yo…what a gift….thank you.
I am so glad that you found this channel, Shelley!
Great interview. And I remember the exact big event that crashed the jenga tower for me. I knew 10 years ago what it was but I didn't put it together or understand the process until I found your channel Dr. Yo. Thank you for this information.
You're already so far ahead just knowing what it was, Tobie. I'm glad this was helpful!
Amazing interview thank you so much.
So glad it was useful!
Thank you for this!
You're very welcome, Lynn!
Great video thank you for sharing! I feel like i need so much help with my emotional feelings but is so hard to find the correct therapist 😢 plus i feel so powerless because i dont know if i could afford one because my income rite now is a big problem because of my vestibular disorders i have not been able to go back to work!! And this is where i feel so stress, sad and frustrated! Ive seen 2 therapist that accept my medical card but i just didn't feel the click 🙃 i feel like am never going to have the correct help because am a low income person and sadly we are not treated like a person that works and haves the good income do pay!! I hate feeling this way but is the true alot of times i feel ignored is so hard and shame not been able to get the rite help and this is where i feel angry because of my daily dizzeness plus more vestibular symtoms dont let me function correct to get out of home at work!! I pray to god one day i could function like a normal person again. And be able to look for help!! Honestly i know that i need alot of support specially for my VM symtoms and emotional problems... i know am not the only one in this page is really sad not beed validate because am not that person that has a good job and money. We should all get treated the same no matter what! I wish i could just do so much more but is not in my hands! Im a hot mess and i know it😢
Sooooo brilliant
This was awesome and thank you Dr. Yonit for doing the cross-pollination of therapies!! although she could perhaps integrate some pain reprocessing therapy, teehee
It would be so effective!
What is the best way to research and locate a reputable qualified therapist? The light bulb turned on for me as my Jenga tower crashed sometime ago but I did not think I needed help because I can’t identify big trauma. Thank you for all your support, videos and hope.
Such a great question. If you're in the membership community, I have a video about this under I need more help. If not, I think this is a question Pippa and I will address in our next podcast together.
Absolutely AMAZING INTERVIEW . VERY BENEFICIAL D. YONlT.
Interesting.
This afternoon.
Going home no dizziness.
Toilet no dizziness.
Kitchen no dizziness
Living room and there it is dizziness.
Unbelievable this behavior and is driving me nuts and is making me depressed
I know it's frustrating but this is actually SO encouraging to me to hear because NOTHING but neural circuit dizziness can explain a phenomenon like this. It means you can heal.
I really got a lot out of this - I'd travel to Utah to work with her- I do have an EMDR therapist here and I today decided and made an appointment with her for my dizziness-after two vertigo incidents- I was wondering if EMDR could help and I found this video today- It seems like it will work. I did EMDR for another trauma recently- my Jenga tower is extremely high and I believe that's what happened after one more thing...
Thanks
Kaustav, you're so kind. Thank you so much for sending the pictures!! I'm moving into a new office and they'll be the first ones up on my new bulletin board.
Hi Dr. Yo!
Do you offer a 1 on 1 meeting? I would love to get your input on my vestibular journey. Thank you for all the great videos!
Hi Jessica, please see my current offerings and how to contact my office on my website thesteadycoach.com/
TANK YOU.
You're very welcome, Jeanne!
Hey happy new year
Everyone xoxo🎉🤯👻
Happy new year!!!!
awesome interview...EMDR is amazing....dizziness with a brain tumor is not
I'm sorry you're going through this, Jeannie.
Go with the good vibe
Hi Dr. Yo. I fail to understand one thing about my symptoms. I was diagnosed with unilateral vestibular hypofunction (57% on right side), however ever since I was dizzy, I was always able to drive fine, and have no issues in any passive motion like cycling or traveling on a bus. I am confused if mine is an actual vestibular disorder or a combo of hypofunction + PPPD ?! Normally people with vestibular disorders cannot drive.
Generally speaking, yep, you're right, unilateral hypofunction initially will lead to issues with all movement. As the brain compensates, some "templates" get updated more easily than others. When there are inconsistencies like you describe, that is typically PPPD. ua-cam.com/video/J9ia2XR-qB8/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/J9ia2XR-qB8/v-deo.html talk about why unilateral hypofunction can lead to PPPD and this one talks about driving templates ua-cam.com/video/6mPKiOa7VQ8/v-deo.html
@@TheSteadyCoach but when my symptoms started , I have always been able to drive fine . May be the first 3-4 days I had minor issue driving on a wide open freeway, but that went away .
Please describe the "different emotional relationship with the pain" . What does this look like?
“Go away I hate you I can’t stand you” vs “You’re hurting. I’m here.”
It’s a gray button with your names on it. But I have a crazy filter on my phone.
