    I live in Phoenix and do a great deal of hiking…including in the summer. Start early, rest when you need to, drink LOTS of water. Rest in the middle of the day if need to, night hiking is good…morning best. You’ll do great. Looking forward to watching your journey. Blessings.

    The difference here in SoCal is to dress in cotton in hot dry weather. You want at least one cotton shirt to be able to wet it to help keep you cooler and/or use a cooling cloth on your neck. If you can get an umbrella or use your poncho set up as a tarp during the hottest part of the day. April won’t be too bad with the heat, but it’ll be 90° this next week here. Good luck!!!

      @@kellyhays23 YW, when you start getting to the Sierra mountains, then convert back to synthetic. Learn to set up your trekking poles to create a Lean To shelter with your poncho. That desert heat is not anything to mess with. I was heat stroke last year in the San Bernardino mountains, Lytle Creek, just camping at a resort with a pool. I was drinking enough liquids, it was just being exposed out in the sun for several hours without shade. I forgot a tarp and got sick. It was 90+ degrees in the mountains in August. It will be similar going through the Mohave.

    You may be more likely to get 100+ degree temperatures in the summer in northern California. Despite what everyone calls it, the PCT is really not going through much desert at all. Most of the PCT in southern California is *chaparral*, with a lot more green, dense vegetation. You get a bit of desert scrub near Scissors Crossing and creosote scrub in the Mojave Desert near the California Aqueduct.

    • @memathews
      @memathews 2 роки тому +1

      Yep, more people hike the PCT SOBO each year, but it's not a huge number. The start date is sometimes in June or July, snow keeps the routes closed until then. Sometimes there's a 20-foot snow depth that takes awhile to melt off. We just got 2 feet of snow here on the Oregon portion of the PCT in 2 days this week.

    Are you required to carry a bear can?

      "Where are bear canisters required on the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail?
      Bear canisters are required in parts of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Inyo, Sierra and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests, and in all of Yosemite and Lassen Volcanic National Parks. Basically, a typical long-distance PCT hiker and horseback rider should, at the minimum, carry canisters between Kennedy Meadows (mile 702) in the south and Sonora Pass (mile 1017) in the north and then again in Lassen Volcanic National Park (mile 1343-1363). We also strongly recommend carrying a bear canister in Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe. If you’re hiking the entire John Muir Trail, that’s the entire way. ALL of your food and scented items must be in the canister once you make camp. If you’re only visiting portions of the Sierra, you’re welcome to research which locations don’t require hard sided canisters - though we still encourage you to carry them in places that they’re not required."
