It’s like this in the north of England and Scotland every summer
I work in s lodge way up in the mountains, can confirm, mountain weather is no joke. The other day my commute took two extra hours because we were stuck between two rock/mud slides. They had the snow plow scraping the road out while we all sat with no Wi-Fi in the pouring rain. It can turn on ya, that's for sure.
Not to down play the weather. But, some of my most memorable moments on trail are from bad weather days. Ya never forget those.
A very long time ago my first serious gf and I went camping. About 45 minutes after we set-up the tent and campfire an unpredicted monsoon took everything but the two of us hunkered down inside my Ford Bronco.
Your face in the thumbnail, was my gf face for the rest of the weekend.

Good move on the micro spikes. I was out with my new dog bush whacking one time in early March. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and we were walking through an area that was heavily faulted. The slopes went in all directions... I'd be walking up an incline one moment and then across a side slope the next. One of those side slopes got sun whereas much of the area was shaded by hemlock trees. The next thing I knew I slipped on ice and was sliding down the face of the slope... over a small ledge... and ultimately found myself at the very bottom of the terrain. I was beat up... I laid there trying to catch my breathe as it had been knocked out of me. Next I took an inventory of my body... outside of my left elbow my bones seemed okay. I didn't seem to have any internal injuries... I crawled over to a tree and pulled myself to my feet. It took me at least a half hour to get out of the hole I was in... had to crawl up a steep embankment to get to a flat trail. It was only about a 50-60 yard "walk" but it took a long time! I managed to get myself out of the woods by myself... a good thing as I had no cell phone in those days... they were a new thing! Ultimately the elbow bone was bruised, not broken. It took months for that to stop hurting and weeks for the rest of my bruises and aches to heal up and cease. Micro spikes would have prevented that! I went back a month or so later with my son, a 100 foot tape measure and an inclinometer. I know those woods well and knew where I fell and where I landed. Best estimates based on the tape and average slope was I took about a 130 foot ride and lost about 65 in elevation. I had crashed into a few trees and rock outcroppings on the way down. Things would have been worse if not for the Filson Tin Cloth Packer Coat, insulated Tin Packer hat, and Sorel pac boots. That gear was like armor and it saved my skin! I've got Ice Bug spiked boots now for use when I know there is ice and I'm out taking a day hike.

Have been following you since the beginning. I remember backpacking across Glacier NP in 1979, from Lake Mcdonald to the east side, via Waterton NP. And crossing an ice field along the way. That was the first week in August. Thanks for sharing, and bringing back great memories.

Glad you got to safety! I don't like snow either. Cancelled a section hike of the AZT last March/April because it snowed. Steep terrain and snow/ice freaks me out.

Great video! I love the Northwest, the North Cascades were my old stomping grounds for 10 years. I miss them dearly. I must visit Glacier! Have a great trip. Hope you didn`t forget a big knife (Cougar protection/Bears eyes)

Amazing views! Even here in Texas at the moment, you made me feel just a bit chilly! Even with no power at the moment from a baby hurricane / tropical storm. Lot's of memories.. I honestly am not sure which I liked on the CDT (sections).. Freezing my rear off, OR finding completely dry water sources that were full a few weeks prior.. Twin Lakes = on trail and definitely moving up the mountain.. Never was in fear but sometimes nature sends a few reminders you way... Wish I were thru hiking this with you all!

Well that looked intense!! Microspikes definitely came to good use there. I was worrying about your filming gear in all that rain / sleet too! I was relieved to see the mic get packed away, though I guess the camera is a bit trickier to pack away? Guessing it's goes some water resistance though?
That lodge looked so cosy, and I love how we could hear the wind howling around at the end.

Micro spikes can sometimes lock together if your stride gets too close, causing you to fall face first really fast. Just an FYI from someone who wears them in the Canadian Rockies lots in the winter. I’m used to them but I’ve done a few face plants too!!! Stay safe. Have fun.

That scary weather is no joke! Higher in the mountains more of a snowstorm since higher elevation is much colder.
So glad you are safe and staying safe. If I could, I would show you how to hold a treking pole to make it easier and more comfortable and safer for you. So, I looked up how to hold a treking pole on UA-cam and found these videos that show the correct hand placement on the poles for you. The first one is, Trekking Poles 101 Everything you need to know, and the second one is, Trekking Poles: How to adjust and use straps. These two videos show the correct hand placement to make your life much easier. Since you are in the mountains usage of your poles is critical to make things easier for you. I hope these videos help and you give it a try. My prayers are with you for safe passage. Enjoy life and be well.

The micro spikes are the trick. They make traversing over the snow easier. The weather comes up when in the Rockies. It could have been worst but letting you see the bad side early on the hike keeps your hopes better for the entire trip. You see what can happen in no time. Happy Trails!

The room is cool. Not depressing. I would not go up in mountains without a wool jacket and pants (like Filson or Sleeping Indian/King of the Mountain), waterproof gloves and a heavy alpaca knit bag hat. You could die from exposure. Better to be slow and alive.

Last winter our trails turned to glare ice, impossible for regular hiking footwear. I tried out my Kahtoola K-10 hiking crampons with 3/4 inch spikes. I couldn't believe the advantage. No slipping at all. Made walking a piece of cake. But they weigh 21.1 ounces, a bit heavy. But for my kind of hiking, perfect. Best wishes to the gang.

Wow! That's awesome video! This is learning experience on avoiding very serious weather! You're lucky the lodge was nearby. I guess you should always have a escape plan in case serious weather shows up.

Wow, that really was picture postcard to nightmare in a short amount of time. The potential for disaster is real on that trail when you're not near a town or resort. I know people always say this, but be careful out there.

What an introduction to this trail!
I did the loop from MG to Elizabeth lake(with a side trip to Helen lake) back to MG with a buddy 20 plus years ago. I would love to do it again with your pack weight. We both were easily caring 50lbs. Carried the wrong everything 😁. For context, our stove was a single burner Coleman camp stove.

Recall one campsite hand-out pamphlet warned of snow and extra-cold temps., in August, up that way. Being from the warmer climate region, was rather alarming to read that.
