The death of Richard Long in 1996 was a massive loss to GT, and after his death the company started to flounder and ultimately failed. I still have my 1990's GT Edge ti and GT Edge Aero road frames. Regret selling my STS and LTS frames years ago.
They were the brand in BMX forever. And for a while, they dominated mountain bikes too. Zaskar and Avalanche for hardtails and RTS and LTS for full suspension
I bought my GT Zaskar LT expert 2 years ago... Great HT bike. I dont use it so much after I bought my Trek Rail. Here in Slovakia (EU) there are practically zero GT advertistments. I know only 2 shops with GT bikes, they have zero ebike in stock.
I had several GT bmx bikes in the 80’s as well as mtb’s in the 90’s. Timberline, Avalanche, and RTS1. I would buy a new Fury as a lot of my former teammates run them and they absolutely love them. I just wouldn’t want to risk any warranty issues.
Not sad one bit. The industry as a whole is in shambles because of their greed. Charging assinine prices for a non motorized two wheel toy is finally catching up with them. 9 years of pushing pro level rider bikes to 95% of average riders ripping us off for thousands of dollars per bikes for marginal performance return to skill level was a business model destined to fail. The industry should focus on entry to mid level bikes with fantastic frames at the core, allowing us to have the choice to upgrade as we ride and progress. But knowing that most bike brands are owned by hedge funds now. The industry will continue to push over priced over speced bikes to garner the most profits they can get and sell off at pennies on the doller if shit hits the fan.
ZASKAR! Damn terrible news, and such a legacy… which of course slid badly with the Dorel purchase…. Then a part of my soul died with the Pon purchase and knew it was near…. Still shocking and sadly a harbinger of things to come. Pon will cut deeper, just wait….
many bike companies in my country ended up the same, usually and what GT might do is heavily reduce the models and focus on cheaper high quantity bicycles, possibly focus on rentals I tought my current bicycle company was done in 2019 but apparently they heavily reduced their workforce and renamed now instead of selling 20 different models they sell 5 including 2 city bikes huge shrink but they still exist
My second MTB was an LTS-3 that I still have. I rode it for about 10 years but now it sits up in the rafters in the garage. It's amazing how goemetries have changed. My Fuel Ex is so much better in every way but the LTS-3 got me out on the trails. My LBS guy recently picked up GT after dropping Specialized because they do on-line sales. I see a lot of Levos on the trails around here and I doubt if they purchased from my LBS. i wonder how he feels now after hearing about this.
It is sad to see the end of an iconic brand! Your LBS probably picked up GT after the new CEO/headquarters of GT 20 months ago. So this is crushing news for all the dealers too, especially the new ones.
Phil from Skills with Phil posted yesterday that everyone is let go including Hans and all employees if I heard him correctly. The end of a brand apparently.
The bubble has burst. Covid made some of these companies making risky decisions and now they pay the price. Everything has been 6 months straight 30% off and they still aren’t selling. Our local dealers here in Finland are selling inventory and not ordering new stuff in. Couple of new models here and there but the market is tanking bad.
The EV industry is not like the eBike industry - The auto industry is suffering because people don’t want electric vehicles and they are not surviving without subsidies.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind! Emtb'ers are the new user group so even though most are polite and friendly, the group is under a microscope
Been mountain biking for 20 years and never seen a mountain biker cause trouble for a hiker. Usually the other way around. No one needs to teach mountain bikers etiquette.
Don't be so gullible. Putting a brand on "pause" is a way that international conglomerates can shut down their business (go bankrupt) without letting the everyone know that our economy is crashing hard, and we're heading into a depression like we've never seen before!
My first bike was a GT Dyno bmx back in 1995 in the 5th grade. My introduction to a lifelong love of bicycles. Hope they make a comeback.
0:01 GT bikes no more
10:00 Bosch automotive
10:44 eBay eBike sale ban (for UK site for private sales)
11:05 Rhino racks

I remember my GT bike when I was super young on the BMX side. They were the ones to get and very expensive. Crazy how times change.

Never owned a GT but I remember drooling over the LTS it was over 5k at the time, unobtainable for me!😂
Those bikes were the best of the best!
Nice, i have a GT Fury 2020 and a KTM 450 2023, now i have the full set of extinguid dinosaurs xD

My first real mountain bike was a GT Zaskar
I still have my 1992 Zaskar
Sad to hear about GT. I recently bought a GT Sensor carbon elite and a GT Grade. Both very great bikes. My 1st mtn bike was a GT Ricochet.
Love my rocky mount hitch rack. Beefy enough for my ebikes too :) Hope they continue to make them.
No doubt

Bought a GT LTS team frameset in the early nineties, still have it. Always liked GT’s.
The problem is… nothing desirable came after the LTS
ZASKAR!

Pon is hurting financially… and they are Dutch
My first bike was a GT Avalanche 3.0 hardtail. Sad news

What about Hans Rey?

No Way!

Correction: The current eBay ban only applies to electric bikes sold by private sellers in the UK.
Facts
This kinda reminds of the watch collecting sphere in which holding companies have/are resurrecting brands of the past.
So true🙏

So so true. The reincarnation was done during Covid
GT was the only name in bmx/freestyle for a kid in the 80/90s. I wish I still had my gf performer and my dyno 😢
Sounds like a meltdown in just about everything!
Exactly. It was an investment project but there’s no money to invest now
The EV industry is not like the eBike industry - The auto industry is suffering because people don’t want electric vehicles and they are not surviving without subsidies.
Not in the US where cities are built on long range travel. For most world it will be the norm.
@Nope - it wont be - no sources support your theory…
While the US creates inane theories against EVs, the world marches on with batt
Ellsworth is another brand “on hold”.
In purgatory
GT was rolling along with alacrity until Richard Long was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Alacrity
GT? Again?😢
Sounds like they are just trimming the fat.
They are gutting it and selling for parts
BTW - I think you should do a video on EMTB etiquette on the trail. I seen a lot of MTB'ers causing trouble for hikers.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep it in mind! Emtb'ers are the new user group so even though most are polite and friendly, the group is under a microscope

Capital venture corporations, get the hell out of bicycles and stick to dumb start ups!
Brian Lopes was a BMX Guy LOL!!
Who said rhat? you??
GT has always been poorly managed! It was always a bmx brand and when Gary Turner sold, it was never the same.
True. Made so much money but little profit
It’s a shame you seem so happy about this news.
If you know me, you'll recognize that I smile even when I'm asleep. Doesn't really mean I'm happy.
Congratulations on the dumb comment of the day award🤡
