Yes, for my son's commuter, I bought a used EMB from Dave's Bike Shop in Idaho Falls, Idaho. My son's EMB commuter handles excellent in snow (Idaho Falls has blizzards and our temperatures vary from +40 C to -40 C) and the price was very reasonable. But I would be concerned about buying an EMB from anyone else. Dave's Bike Shop does all my family's bike maintenance work and we have never had a bad experience buying from him. YMMV with other bike shops. Half of the bike shops in Idaho Falls went bankrupt in 2024. 😢
I had a shimarno e8000 motor stop working (out of warranty), having covered 2000 miles. I had it checked at a shimarno service center.they told me the only thing that could be done was to replace the motor. I sent the motor to E-motor repairs, and they told me th inside of the motor was clean, no water ingress. The motor could not be repaired as the internal torque sensor had stopped working and shimarno do not make this part available. The Only choice was a new motor at £920. The old motor presumably goes to landfill! Which is possibly the most frustrating part of the experience
I worked at a huge motorcycle dealership in the parts dept., and I cannot tell you how many times I had to tell a frustrated customer that 'sorry, this little $1 part you broke only is offered via this $189.99 assembly". Making every part available separately is not cost-effective from a manufacturer's standpoint, but Shimano not even offering to the public a rebuild kit or assembly is bull-shite. Yamaha, interestingly offers practically all the parts to rebuild their Moro e-mtb motor from their website, unfortunately - they've also nixed their entire e-mtb bike business. Small brands like Fazua also don't offer parts kits or assemblies and force consumers to remove the motors for a swap (at least Fazua is very generous in motor swaps for those rare occurrences, unlike shimano that ca$he$ in on the customer, for ANY motor issue)......kinda tells you something about the economics of disposable things.
My Turbo Levo battery currently resides indoors whilst the bike is left in the cold in the garage. The same goes for all of my power tool batteries also. It was a conscious decision when I bought the bike as it gives you options.
Coincidentally, just had my Giant / Yamaha PWX motor overhauled by eBike Motor Centre in Hampshire, £257 for a full overhaul - turned it around in a week. Fantastic service. They found zero water ingress even after 2 years of riding and transported around on the back of the car, just a bit of bearing wear causing some noise.
That’s a great relief. I have a PWST on my new Gas Gas G Trail 3, and I was concerned about water ingress where it starts to get swampy out there… thanks!
*Water ingress* will result from the vacuum created when cooling a hot motor in cool water in a stream crossing or big puddle. Its an old problem that was resolved decades ago on offroad vehicles like on LandRovers. All well prepared 4wD vehicles have vented drivetrains, with the vent hose well above the water depth expected. Engine air intake is managed this way too. Why cant we do this too with a vent hose inside the frame and up as high as the head-tube? The motors should also have a desiccant pack to absorb any moisture that does evade the seals. The volume of air within the motors will determine how much ‘suck’ they will have. Gross changes in elevation is an additional concern. Sea level vs 8000’ what is the neutral value?
Bought someone's used YT decoy a year ago (EBAY) a frame, a fork, a motor e8000, and battery 540. It had 2000 miles on it. It took about a month to rebuild the bike using some extra DH parts I had left around. I have ridden the bike over 700 miles, I treat it worse than my downhill bike. The bike is 5 years old and going strong. Same battery i get about 46 miles out of a charge on trail (eco-trail). 5-6 pedal ups in a 1200' bike park (trail).
Ebay are delighted with business sellers that sell complete garbage that's broken after a month.....but a private seller can't sell a decent brand used bike....insanity....
There must be more to the sales ban. Maybe there is a high complaint rate with e-bikes? I’ve sold 4 e-bikes in the past to happy new owners and eBay is the easiest way to do this. People looking to upgrade may reconsider bothering which might have a knock on affect for new sales.
Interesting comment about water getting sucked in to the motor when it heats up. Basic physics: hot air = less dense air, vs, cool air = more dense air. You get the higher air pressure of the cooler air moving past the motor seal where the less dense (hotter) air resides, and that carries water with it. Perhaps this is why motor brands can submerge a motor in water, and nothing gets past the seals. I bet if they were working the motor hard, then submerge it, you'd get some water ingress past the sealing? Could be a good episode to investigate, as this 'mystery' of not washing an ebike will not soon vanish

I don't particularly trust selling through Facebook market place unless it's small items. Huge fan of SKS Mudhugger front and rear mud guards on my Transition Relay - they don't look as bad as Neil thinks they are! And, I love keeping the muck off my bike and arse! And, living in Michigan, I ride my ebike year round in below freezing temps, which is why I deliberately bought a Relay, so I could remove the battery and bring it indoors to charge, instead of the entire dirty bike. Climate is a huge consideration for what type of system you select for an e-mtb.

My wife has always been nagging about her & my eMTBs hanging out in our lower living room. It's because they are best kept in a climate controlled place. Our batteries and motor systems have been flawless for 6ish years so we are fortunate. 👍🏻
My garage doesn't drop below 5°.. so I dont worry too much about the battery getting cold.. but when I see Instagram plastered with ebikes riding in the snow with crazy wind chill.. I'm always left confused to who's right and who's wrong 😂

Question: Does this ebike speed limit removal gadget really do what it says on the tin? The NLS Components 'SPEEDi' - is it a con or does this really work to fool the sensor you are going slower than in actuality.
Maybe bike-only marketplaces such as buycycle? Not sure, but big societal picture, the e-bike scene is getting increasingly wild and undefined, no? I see it every day in my small town in Pennsylvania, stealth e-bikes with fat tires are way more motorcycle than bicycle boosted by a small electric motor. And I dig any e-bike and I'd be happy to ride one with the look and feel of a sport motorcycle, but let's face it, many of them are ridden by people with disdain for old-fashioned bicycles with pedals. And then, yes, there is the issue of building fires caused by e-bike batteries, scary, to be sure. And in defense of e-bike conversion kits, I bought a new Green Zones Bikes conversion kit from an eBay seller four years ago and it has served me well ever since. Just a front-hub motor and a thumb throttle and a Samsung battery, the selling point for me, and I use it every workday for a four-mile commute. I like the ease on the flats but I use my mighty thighs to power up hills so I get the exercise and don't drain the battery on them. And why conversion kits are not an everyday sight baffles me, especially with all those old mountain bikes and their old mountain bike riders. Or as I prefer saying, someone who grew up on a Schwinn Sting-Ray. 😀
