    Beautiful piece! Suggestion...try parchment instead of wax paper. You find it in the baking aisle on a big roll, and NOTHING sticks to it, not even E6000.

    1st time we meet ...
    An idea... have you tried soaking it in hot water to melt any remaining wax & dissolve any remaining paper? I havent worked with resin yet. It's on the shelf waiting for the right project to 'try it'/'spend it' on & this is it! I'm going to make this with my 13 yr old grandson! He's gonna LOVE it!!
    We spent quite some time at Christmas at the Michael's craft store looking, many multiple times, at every single special rock they had to find just the right one for me to gift him & it was a geode in those colours that he chose. There was always a feature he liked about one & then a different feature that he liked would be prominent in another, & he had to keep weighing his degree of admiration for the individual features themselves against the percentage of the rock encompassed by said feature & also take into account any other specialties like colour & sparkle they each may have had to offer & I was right there with him in the agony over each eliminated rock because we'd have preferred to take them ALL home & enjoy the magic of every one of the special features they had in stock. But the gift was for just one rock.... the one that was the most precious & beautiful to him of them all. It was a terrific lesson in the practise of making choices if you have the time & patience to help them work through each option, & then all the choosing then 2nd guessing & deliberation over the 2nd choices & so on. (Of course I ended up buying him 2 afterall because neither of us could choose which stone had the feature we were willing to leave behind.
    & sooooooo....
    He will be thrilled to be able to make his own huge geode and incorporate any or all of his favoured features as well as choose his own colours.
    Maybe if we allow ample curing time we can keep adding layers every weekend until we have what looks like a whole 3D geode rock!
    Have you tried that yet?
    I'll let you know if it works though it'll be a while from now.

    A very pretty geode. Just FYI-there is a product called nail polish thinner. You can get it at Sally’s Beauty Supply. If you have polished that are very low or just thick you can thin them out for spreading. It doesn’t take much to thin polish so a bottle goes a very long way.

    Have you ever tried this project on glass? I'm thinking that after it is completely dry, you can put it in the freezer and let it get VERY cold and just pop it off intact. Thinking it would also have a shiny finish on the back side that way. Might be worth a try. Happy Crafting!

    Have a thought for the next one of us who are in possession of a warped cookie sheet 😜 .......try using a straw and blow through it to mix the resin colors? I’ve seen this done with a hair dryer (I’ve seen both techniques used for straight acrylic paint) ....think the hair dryer might be too powerful for this smaller project....but the straw might work ...then ya don’t have to pick anything up 😊 just a thought from my end of the world 😜 ...happy crafting all

    Right now I’m up to the spot where you said the inside was a little tricky, and I was thinking what if you make the line on the inside a little bit smaller and that way you can pick the glass up over the outside glue line like you did for the outside. It might be easier to put around… That’s just a thought 💭

    What if you were to use a heat gun it would melt the wax that's on the wax paper and you should be able to pull it off. The center of a geode is Halo anyway. At least all the geodes I have seen or Hollow in the middle with dragon points of what looks like shards of crystal poking to the inside. But the center is pretty much Halo. Hope that helps thanks again Deb

    • @thefrugalresinista
      @thefrugalresinista  5 років тому +4

      Thanks so much for watching! I would think a hot cup would be fine. I use my coasters with hot cups. The Stone Coat Countertop resin is pretty heat proof. They have a UA-cam video of them setting it on fire and it not getting damaged! The quick coat dries pretty hard within two hours but still takes about 2 days to finish curing so I would wait that long.

    • @thefrugalresinista
      @thefrugalresinista  5 років тому +29

      Thanks for watching! Yes! I mix the paint with the resin before I pour. If you do it, you just want to make sure that you mix at least 10 parts resin to 1 part paint. The paint goes a LONG way to color the resin and too much paint can keep your resin from curing properly.

    • @thefrugalresinista
      @thefrugalresinista  5 років тому +8

      That would probably work great too! I didn't because the resin tends to leak out under the stones and then you have a weird edge. I also knew that I wanted the edge to be thick enough for me to pour two coats and I was afraid that without creating a barrier, the second layer would leak out over the top. Good questions!

    I used hot glue gun last year towards the end of the year when I first started cuz I wanted to do free forms and I wanted to do them now I didn't want to wait 24 hours for silicone to dry so used hot glue gun and I built up my mold only to have the heat gun and the torch melt it down not completely but I did struggle with it

      I haven't tried to use hot glue only as a barrier. I've only done it by pushing the glass stones into the glue and then letting the glue cool. Maybe my glass stones helped to protect the glue from melting? I have only used my torch to get rid of resin bubbles as well. I haven't hit my glue barrier with a heat gun.

    Wonder if this would work on a plastic cutting board like the cheap ones at dollar tree. The glue pops right off but of the resign wouldn’t then it wouldn’t work

    What does the torch do to the materials? Could you use a heat tool? Beautiful work! Thank you!

      Thanks for watching! The torch pops the resin bubbles to make your resin cure as smooth as possible. You can use a heat gun as well. You just have to make sure you turn it on away from your resin and move in slowly so that you don't blow your design everywhere. You can also use something as simple as a lighter. It just takes a lot longer.

      You can get different varieties at dollar stores in their floral/craft section. Here are the links to the specific colors that I used in this one... amzn.to/2IlOhKQ and amzn.to/2UfPmFr

    Is that acrylic mix with resin???

    • @thefrugalresinista
      @thefrugalresinista  5 років тому

      Yes. Resin doesn't love acrylic but if you stick to a 1 part acrylic to 10 parts resin, you will get good color and still have the resin cure all the way.

      I actually used a small kitchen blowtorch. A heat gun is on my purchase list for the near future!
