    So simple, (as you said) so cliche, but DANG it sounds good. Thank you as always for your thoughtful breakdowns!

      Cheers Sam, glad you like it! Rings must be the top module out there for instant gratification :)

      @@TomChurchill Yeah, Rings and Erica Synth's Fusion Delay/Flanger/Vintage Ensemble are two of the most instantly gratifying modules for me, the textures and sounds you can make with either and/or both of them is amazing. I've never heard a delay module sound like that Erica Synth one.

    No Cliche' at all. fantastic video. Thank you so much for very clearly and patiently showing us the cabling or patching. This is where many fail to "teach" or show on these videos. Greatly appreciated Tom.

    Sounds fantastic. I have these granular effects like the mimeophon and typhoon but feel a bit lost with them. This video gives me hope 😁

    It's so hard to make rings into clouds really inspiring after all these years; this does that brilliantly.

    Very interesting explanation of a classical combination of two iconic modules. Thanks!

    To be honest, it's kinda sad to have to make up excuses for creating something beautiful.
    Count the times you apologized for making something "cliche", then count the times people in the comments echoed that.
    It's nonsense, really.
    First, you don't need to re-invent the wheel. If something has stood the test of time there's probably a reason for that. Just because something is easy to create doesn't make it less valuable.
    Second, there will always be people like me who come across this for the very first time. I have no clue about Rings+Clouds having been done to death.
    To me it just sounds beautiful. And by constantly shitting on your own work, you take away from that the beauty.
    This video, to me personally, was extremely helpful. I lack the vocabulary to describe what I like, but THIS is it.
    Moreover, you described the steps necessary to get there and the gear required to do so. All very attainable.
    So what you did is inspire others to create. Even if it is "only" re-creating.
    Please, never diminish that effect that your work has on others!

      I take your point. I guess I was just trying to acknowledge that there's plenty of other 'Rings into Clouds' content out there. I definitely wasn't trying to shit on my own work - just being modest! Glad you like the patch, anyway :)

    Super great video. While the module combinations might be widely used in the eruorack world, what you came up with is NOT cliche!! 🙂 I have different brands of the Rings/Clouds combo and I'll have to adjust to my setup, but dang, this was so inspiring. Besides awesome music, the production of the vid was top notch too. A big Thank You!

    "formless ambient wash", that"s the trap... easy to fall into. In french I'd say "soup", as something I want to avoid. Rhythm is key indeed, thanks for the vid, cheers

    Do you prefer the Jak clone of Rings over the CalSynth version called Nanorings? Blissful stuff, and so well thought out and executed.

    • @TomChurchill
      @TomChurchill  13 днів тому

      Thanks! I think those versions are basically the same, aside from the panel colour/style. TBH if I was buying Rings again I’d probably go for a full-size clone as the controls are quite small and cramped on the Nano version, but it’s still perfectly useable…

    Excellent ideas, well explained and easy to follow. Except the Keystep 37. I have one, but have no idea how you’re doing what you’re doing. Off to the manual…

    • @TomChurchill
      @TomChurchill  2 роки тому +2

      So at the beginning and the end of this video I’m using the Keystep 37 arpeggiator, set to mode 1 (‘up’), 1/16 division at 101bpm, and I’ve got the ‘hold’ button activated. Then I’m just playing 5-note chords (mostly just semi-random selections of black keys, tbh!). In the middle section I’ve switched to sequence mode and I’m playing back a 16-note sequence that I entered earlier in step record mode, then just hitting keys to transpose it. Hope that helps!

    • @walrtbstudios5430

      @@TomChurchill Thanks Tom! I actually have the KS37 manual printed out (you wouldn’t want to drop it on your foot), but that was more helpful!

  • @neuzethmusic131
    @neuzethmusic131 2 роки тому +2

    Sorry, maybe a stupid question, but how do you get the sound of the rings so soft, as it seems there is no LPF involved?! Is it just the Rings itself? Great tutorial by the way!

    • @TomChurchill
      @TomChurchill  2 роки тому +4

      Hi, glad you enjoyed it! You’re right, there’s no LPF in this patch, so the ‘softness’ just comes from having the Brightness and Damping parameters set quite low on Rings. (The modulation from RND Step means that each note is slightly different, and occasionally a note will sound a bit brighter, but I’ve kept that effect quite subtle…) Hope that helps!

    HI :) Nearly a year later... What would you advise as granular processor for ambient/hypnotic techno? I am looking at monsoon (clouds) and I came across your patch. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge 🙏

    • @TomChurchill
      @TomChurchill  7 місяців тому +1

      I haven't used many other granular modules aside from Monsoon and Pladask Dradd, so I'm definitely not an expert I'm afraid! Monsoon/Clouds is great and there's a reason why it's so popular, but I'd maybe also check out Intstruo Arbhar and see if it clicks for you...

    • @OlivierSarfati
      @OlivierSarfati 7 місяців тому

      Thank you for taking the time to offer other options Tom, much appreciated. Space is a premium so I was thinking Monsoon as it is smaller than Arbhar. Will have a look at it though as it keeps popping up when looking at granular processor.@@TomChurchill

  • @HousePlant_Ambient

    Serious Question. May I do this with Qu-Bit Chord V1 and Mutable Tides? I’ve just received these modules recently.

    • @TomChurchill
      @TomChurchill  Рік тому

      I don’t think so, to be honest. Rings is a resonator and Clouds is a granular processor; Chord and Tides are neither of those things, so I can’t see how you’d use them to recreate this patch. I’m sure you can do lots of other cool things with them though!

    Is the clock coming from the ketstep? If so, what is it set at?

    • @TomChurchill
      @TomChurchill  5 місяців тому

      The clock is just the gate output of the Keystep, which is putting out 16th-note arpeggios.
