*Thank you all for watching!!! Comments with the most ENGAGEMENT Will get their Reaction Done! Love y’all‼️*
That galloping riff is None other than the Mighty James Hetfield. His right hand is legendary. His technique of down picking has inspired so many guitar players in music. His rhythm guitar playing is considered to be one best in rock history.
REAL SONG MEANING: The song was written by James after he and his wife watched a Netflix doc on Amy Winehouse and her death. James has battled addiction for over 30 years, so he felt compelled to write a song about it.
I knew this also. But listening to Van's take it makes sense also.
thats not true brody LFR knows what he is saying he is saying fame isnt evreything and if u try for that goal u fall right back down when trying to hard
I'm old enough to remember a time before Internet trolls called Lars a "bad drummer" when he was voted as one of the best metal drummers in several magazines. So...
IKR....
Yeah, I remember that too.
And I never understood why, because Lars has always sucked. 😂
@@BamaXander Bullshit asshole, can you do better?
@@randycomerford2038 down, boy 😂
I cannot, as I'm a guitarist. However, every drummer I know mocks Lars. And, no, it has nothing to do with him being successful and famous. These same drummers idolize Dave Grohl, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Tre Cool, Travis Barker, Chris Adler, etc.
In fact, the only people I know who defend Lars aren't drummers. 🤷♂️
@@BamaXander You tell me that his drumming on their first 4 albums weren't awsome!
James Hetfield(singer) is also the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time. He has a metronome in his brain
James “the riff man” hetfield!!
David Scott Mustaine is the greatest Rhythm guitarist of all time followed by James Alan Hetfield 🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@C4duke nah james
@@gaelguerrero7005 you are just a troll or trolling because I don’t believe anyone can be this stupid 🤦🏻♂️🤣🤦🏻♂️
@@C4duke lmao....wrong it's Het. Hanneman beats Dave too.
Great choice. The Mighty James Hetfield uses his guitar as a percussive instrument. Double Strumming Riff Machine.
They dont suck, even in their sixties! They have evolved through every generation and have kept the flame burning for metal. Great song and reaction!
They aren't in their 60s though lol

People hate Lars out of jealousy or its the ones who wanted free music
🤣
@@dereksinger1282 that all you got just like all the other trolls
@@rycor9117 how does putting a laughing emoji make me a troll? Not too bright it seems.
@@dereksinger1282 Insults to boot = lmao So original.
Lars is lazy compared to his drumming in the 80s.
That's not hating. That's just facts
Whomever says Lars is a bad drummer has never touched a kit. They still mad about Napster
And they were totally correct about Napster!!
Lars wasn't even the best drummer out of the Big 4. Charlie Benante, Dave Lombardo, and Gar Samuelson/Nick Menza are/were infinitely better than him. I don't know a drummer who doesn't mock Lars. So, take this "they've never touched a kit" nonsense somewhere else. 😂
Eh... He's was good in the 80's. Lars just needs to practice whenever he's not recording. His live performances will improve.
Drew you just named drummers that played for bands that basically only become famous because of Metallica.
Living in the shadows of a more successful band doesn't give you props to mock someone that plays for that band.
@@mitchand9 that wasn't the point of contention. We weren't discussing who opened what doors for other musicians, we were discussing physical talent. If we were discussing their impact on the genre and culture at large, I would agree that Lars was integral for all of it. But, that's not what we were talking about.
Lars isn't awful, but he's not good. The drummers I'm citing LOVE drummers like John Bonham and Keith Moon, so it has nothing to do with jealousy.
We wouldn't have had guitarists like any of the guys in the Big 4 without Tony Iommi, but I don't know many people who would argue that he was a better guitarist than Hetfield, Hammett, Mustaine, Holt, Dimebag, etc.
Next one: Disposable Heroes 🔥🔥🔥
Lars best work in my opinion was on spit out the bone. That song is amazing
Considering that song, and that album, came out 33 years after their debut and they still crushed it.. yeah.
One of my fav Metallica songs (that are not from the four first albums). And also agree might be one of Lars's best!
I had chills the first time I heard that song. You can listen to different parts of that song and say "that sounds like Black album, that part sounds like Load, that part sounds like Justice, etc..." It's like each album is represented in that one song.
More like a sledgehammer,KILL'EM All.
For Whom the Bell Tolls is one of my favorites
The gallop. One of metal's signature guitar playing techniques.
Let it sink in that James plays them bad ass riffs AND sings at the same time!
People say Lars is a "bad" drummer cause he doesn't follow the "rules" of how drums are supposed to be played. Which is the corner stone of a GREAT musician.
One of my favorite Metallica songs is "Damage Inc."
They’re my favorite band of all time… I mean these guys released this shit in their 50s!! Just when I thought my dad was cool 😂 Check out “Spit Out The Bone” from the same album
you never know where life wisdom will come from
He does that with the strumming hand, it’s so technical but yet so effortless…. KING OF RIFF
HALO ON FIRE…. from this same band… DO IT
I believe James wrote this after being inspired by a documentary he saw of Amy whinehouse.
one of my all time favorites by them is "Damage Inc." It's a hard, fast, and heavy one! I never understood the meaning of the title of the song, so maybe you can figure it out! One of my favorite lines in a song is in this one. "Fuck it all and Fucking No Regrets" which could mean a lot of things.
+1
i read the bottom half of the paragraph first and thought you were talking about st anger lmao
I know this man isn't that big of a rock fan, but I say we all chip in and get this man a 5 piece kit, a few cymbals, a ride, and a set of nice crispy high hats and let him loose! I think he would have a blast playing the drums for real.. It's in his face and heart! Shout out to the LFR Family!
When I have seen them play this live James Hetfield always says this song is inspired by Amy Winehouse and what happened to her. Some great lyrics in there as usual. Definitely should check out Spit Out the Bone and Hardwired to Self Destruct from their last album, as was Moth into Flame.
I haven’t loved a Metallica album this much since master of puppets came out. Long long time fan here and I must say hardwired album is phenomenal!! Spit out the bone has to be one of their hardest songs ever!
@@susanconstable2113 yep I love this album too
So glad you did this one, very true about the context. As for how he gets that sound its from strumming chords with a downstroke/upstroke/downstroke with his right hand, watch it next time you have free time to watch and pause and look closely.
Liking this approach you got.
If you really want to get how he's making a chug sound on the guitar. He's resting his palm on the bridge on the guitar. Kinda like muting. It still allows sound but not full sound like you would play without palm muting. The reason why it's so fast. It's done in 3 strums of the power chord he's forming on the neck. The reason he is able to play it so fast is because he goes back and for on the direction of the strum. Down, Up, Down. When you hear the 3 chugged fast chords back and forth that's how he's doing it.
This song is awesome live! They go all out with drones flying around looking like moths!! I saw them last in 2018!
Lars... People be hating... jealousy is a sad thing... Love the reactions 👍💪❤
Metallica lit it up ever time , thrash Metal king's .. Full Stop. Pure Fire to the bone
Great song. It's from their 10th album Hardwired...To Self Destruct. They made this album 33 years into their career. It's a double album. I love it. Took my son who was 16 at the time to see them on this tour in Philadelphia in 2017. We took taxi cabs and trains from Long Island, NY to Philly. Great live band.
As someone else in this section said, James saw the Amy Winehouse documentary and that shit was sad enough for him to write a whole song about hers and so many other celebrities’ situations
Tesla - Edison's Medicine, Song & Emotion ( tribute to Steve Clark formerly with Def Leppard RIP)
As mentioned by others, James was inspired by a documentary on Amy Winehouse after her death. A lot of the song is aimed at pop music, though any celebrity lifestyle can apply, and how those in the industry are treated less than people, and how said people too often become addicted to the fame and the other toxic addictions to make it (alcohol, drugs, social media, fake friends, ect).
Picking my all time favorite Metallica song is nearly impossible for me. But on the same album as this one (Hardwired to Self-destruct), HALO ON FIRE is my very favorite, followed closely by Spit Out The Bone. I HIGHLY recommend reacting to both.
You broke it down excellent💯
and this is from their last album 2016, worth listening the whole plate, its gooooooood
Still killin it in their late 50s! Yes that’s how old they are here with this hardwired album!!
Spit out the Bone! 🎸🤘🎸🤘
Yeah bro!! More Metallica. Cool to see real artists/producers doing reactions. Love it!
Love your reactions. As for favorite songs any fan would enjoy any song you pick out. But id say try a few from each album as their sound does change and evolve on each.
You're take is awesome bro
Love that shirt, man. #Respect
Van. It’s ok to like many genres. I grew up on rock but developed a love of Rap/hip hop. Culturally or geographically so many of us pigeon hole ourselves into one type of music. But good music is good music. Love that you’re opening up to more styles. All love bro!
I don't have a single favourite Metallica song. My examples:
- "The Outlaw Torn", "Cure", "Ain't My Bitch", "Mama Said", "2x4", "Thorn Within" (all from 1996)
- "The Struggle Within", "Holier Than Thou", "Through The Never", "My Friend Of Misery" (all from 1991)
- full 2016's release
Such a great song and album! Spit out the bone, Now that We're Dead or Halo on Fire would be a great listen as well!
Here Comes Revenge is a banger too. That first verse is one of my favorites on the entire album.
This song is about Amy Winehouse. James' watched the 2015 documentary _Amy._ Then went and wrote this song. There is a video on UA-cam somepalce where he talks about it.
Lars is a great drummer, i think younger ppl compare him to like younger metal drummers, all bast beats n stuff. blast beats are like fast double bass stuff ad snare hits. But he is more musical. He serves the song. He is an older drummer, don’t expect him to play meshuggah guys...plus he helps construct the songs, he will hear something, and build the song. Ive known ppl like this. They play drums and not guitars or bass or etc... but i relied on them, they have an ear for hooks and catchy stuff that i would catch. Love Lars man
Metallica - Shortest straw
My fav Metallica song is fade to black.
Lars is not a bad drummer. He knew nothing about drums prior to kill em all. He learned just to be in the most iconic band in the world. Ever.
class tune
Please check out their performance of The Outlaw Torn Live S&M...that's something else you will see :)!
Hey man, dunno if you are aware... but at video time count 7:23....I saw you become a "Metalhead"! 🤘
That whole album is just....amazing. You should check out "Now That We're Dead" (It'll get stuck in your head hard), and "Spit Out the Bone," another great one. Both off the same album.
Did extra work early today, beat the rain. Thought it made a great day. Boss man hasn't been out and has no cash so I'm waiting. We think we know, but we have no idea
The main riff's picking pattern is triplet-down-down-triple down-triplet-down-down-triplet-triplet-down-down-down (there's a very slight pause before the last two downpicks).
Also, objectively, most drummers agree that Lars is a *sloppy* drummer. But that doesn't make him an objectively *bad* drummer. Basically, in his prime Lars was extremely tight and technical. But he himself admitted that he no longer practices (or more recently he does, but nonetheless stated that he doesn't need to). His reasoning is that he's Lars Ulrich of Metallica, and people will keep coming to see them no matter how sloppy he plays. They're SO huge that it doesn't matter anymore if they're *good.* But in the end, regardless of his precision or lack thereof, he is the perfect drummer *for Metallica.*
In live shows, James comes right out and says the song is about addiction to fame.
Now that we're dead or slither are great songs
BOOM! You found Hardwired...To Self-Destruct. Well done Van.
Shout out to the bass player! I love him🧡
Rob Trujillo
Watch moth into flame live, with lady gaga! It’s superb!!!!
Ewww
@Phil Lambson Cause she's fucking ugly
I'm with ya Lars is the Best Drummer ever to me
This song is a tribute to Amy Winehouse (since James Hetfield once said that it's inspired by her documentary PRETTY MUCH)
If u hear the metal drumming of these players (in these bands & songs) - Dave Lombardo (Slayer - "Angel of death")... Charlie Benante (Anthrax - "I am the law")... Tomas Haake (Meshuggah - 'Combustion') ... Vinnie Paul (Pantera - 'Primal concrete sledge') ... Scott Travis (Judas Priest - 'Hell Patrol') ... Nick Menza (Megadeth - 'Architect of aggression') ... Paul Bostaph (also Slayer - 'Disciple') ... Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater - 'Constant motion') 🤘🔥🤘
...you'll be like "Lars who"? 😂
The Kings
Music is subjective. If you get something from an artists work, then it was worth writing. I personally believe that.
Disposable Heros
Let’s goooooo 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hey Van, thanks for the response to my comments on the Phil Collins video. I thought it couldn't hurt to ask if you would consider a Soulful live Band /Grown-up music as you have put things so well before. Tedeschi Trucks Band (Midnight in Harlem)live from Atlanta. .thanks brother PEACE
The one dislike from the guy who also is jealous of lars’ drumming. Lol. Just having fun guys. No disrespect.
He’s hitting that many times that fast lhhhh
Palm muting and alternate picking for us mortals, down picking for Mr. Hetfield
I've been working on a multi tracked guitar re-creation/cover of Master Of Puppets, based off a backing track from the original studio master of just Lars, Cliff, and James' vocals. ( Video will be posted on my YT and Odysee channels soon....)
Let me tell you....if you DON'T downpick that rhythm....and stay in step with Cliff...it truly turns to MUD. You can be the best freaking alternate/double picker on the planet...but if it's not down picked with that Hetfield aggression, it just loses something. Not to mention the precision necessary when double tracking the rhythm parts! Papa Het was born with a Machine Gun in his right hand!
Lars is definitely not trash!!!!! He may not be as flashy, fast, or even as good as some other drummers or even himself from the past....... But, he is an outstanding drummer. He started a band that nobody cared about in 1981 and turned them into the biggest metal band in history!!!!!! The only metal band or group that is even comparable as far as fan base and success would be Ozzy/ Black Sabbath or AC/DC......Yes they are other great ones out there such as Megadeth, Slayer, and Iron Maiden just to name a few..... But they still can’t hold a candle to Metallica’s success or fan base. And many of the popular drummers of today grew up admiring Lars and his drumming. And not to mention Metallica has introduced us to several different bands that nobody would have heard of if they hadn’t took them on tour with them.... Bands such as Mudvayne, Volbeat, Hatebreed, and even Avenged Sevenfold gained a huge amount of success by Metallica taking them under their wing. Metallica are the band that every bad inspires to be whether they admit it or not.
I don't listen to those fools they say Lars Ulrich is a bad drummer. I mean he's only responsible and plays in the most badass heavy metal band of all time, you don't get to do that and suck.
I love your metal reacts man! You should think about giving Trivium a try! I recommend What The Dead Men Say or maybe Shogun.
Would love to mention one song you should do but honestly bro.. Metallica is a rabbit hole, a deep fucking one.
Their four first albums are amazing (the 3rd on, Master of Puppets, considered one of the best metal albums of all time..) are just.. god damn.
Fade to Black is one of my fav though. Deep lyrics with music that you FEEL, not to mention one of the best solos ever.
Black and Load aren´t exactly bad albums...
Metallica's James Hetfield said he wrote 'Moth into flame' about singer Amy Winehouse, whose fame & fortune brought her excess drugs and alcohol, and ultimately her death at 27 😷... It was easy to relate cos James himself had been burned by fame & alcohol addiction.
Gotta do Am I evil?
The Frayed Ends of Sanity Metallica
Everyone people say are better than Lars doesn't have a quarter of the hits or iconic drumming moments. Haters hate period.
I’m a new sub, luv the way u sing in parts of the music!! I don’t know if you’ve reacted to “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley, 1!of my fav songs ever...BEAUTIFUL‼️‼️‼️
Van, at 4:15 when you pause to reflect on the meaning of the lyrics about selling out for fame in the quest of success, it reminded me of another song from a band named Jinjer. I searched your uploads and don’t see it there. The song is the lead track off their most recent albu, and it’s called, On The Top. It’s roughly what you’re saying right here. “Who’s going to be there at the top when you get there after you’ve stepped on everyone on your way there?” If you haven’t done it, please do it. You won’t be disappointed. (If you need to, do the lyric video :)
they did a version of this with lady gaga and it was actually pretty dope
Fav is “Cure” or “Ronnie”
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥.....Metallica / Now that we're Dead🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Palm muting creates the grunge sound and strumming a few times evenly fast can cause the galloping effect.
The funny thing about Lars is, the band doesn't "follow" him. The drums don't set the tempo. James' right hand on rhythm guitar sets the tempo. Lars' headset is set to James's amp. Look it up.
If you like Metallica then it’s time for Megadeth. Watch Holy wars the punishment due music video and pull up the lyrics and read them. This song was written over 31 years ago and it’s still relevant now. You won’t be disappointed! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Halo on fire is a must
You should do Metallica Stone Cold Crazy cover then the original by Queen
My favorite Metallica song(s) is the Unforgiving parts 1,2 and 3. I think you already done a reaction video to part 1, can you please do a reaction video to all three at once?
One!
GD reaction friend
Suicide and Redemption is a great one by Metallica. It's instrumental
Heard this song was about Amy Winehouse, well based on Amy anyways. James was watching the Amy Winehouse Documentary and was inspired when the song was being written
you should react to battery
Check out some S&M stuff, they can make an orchestra rock.
James hetfield is the king and the god of downstroke picking that's all you need to know that's what makes that noise and that sound is James hetfield downstroke picking the guitar
Van, this is who inspired this song. If you care to read up on it--

In England, Amy rose up the charts quickly. America loved her too. Along with her success, her world now became a life in a fishbowl. She was never left alone. Paparazzi hounded her day & night.
She escaped into serious alcohol consumption, drugs & loneliness... by her choosing.
And with many a story of other's in her situation, more than we care to know...
...she was found dead at 27.😥
you have to react to damage inc
This is probably the first Metallica album I've liked it over 20 years. It's bad ass. Like thier old stuff. My favorite is Trapped Under Ice. That Galloping guitar takea some practice. But it's nothing crazy. Metallica was a super good at it because they do it all down hand-picking. Which is ridiculous fast. Most of us use alternative picking. Honestly I don't know what he's doing in this song, but historically he's known for his downpicking. Sorry for the long comments. You could be right. But I think it's more about being destroyed by Flame
