Felt a bit overwhelmed and confused on the latch assembly before coming across your excellent video. Thank you very much!! Well explained and easy to follow. Really helped.
This is a superb video. Excellent instruction. I bought an inexpensive replacement latch handle for $23 instead of the very expensive OEM $200. No problem at all. Thank you.
You are a lifesaver sir. This video was clear and simple to follow. Thank you for creating this great “How to” video. I almost had my local “stealership” take my money before I decided to give it a try myself. Thanks once again.
An absolute life saver! Your video was very thorough, and user friendly. You saved me $$$ from having to take the truck in and having it repaired! Thank you!!!
Excellent video and good instructions. My latch broke with the gate closed. On the 2011, you can remove the cover from the inside and pull the rods to open gate before starting replacement. thanks, robert
Glad you liked the video. Yes if you access the truck bed from the inside to under the access cover then yes you can easily replace the latch still. Where it sucks is for those folks that have a locked tonneau cover... those can be a bit of a pain to get into...
So, I was on a fishing vacation with my two sons and when we arrived at a lake to fish, I went to open my tailgate and discovered that my tailgate latch handle was broken...of course my tonneau cover was closed and I couldn't open my tailgate! A little disappointing since all the fishing gear was locked in the bed! Luckily we were able to push the tonneau cover enough for my son to sneak his arm in and unlatch the tonneau cover! Luckily for me I stumbled across this video and was able to fix it myself for cheap! I paid $25 for an aftermarket one on ebay! Thanks for the easy to follow "how to"! 👍
Wow, he must have tiny skinny arms! At least you were able to fish still :) Thanks for the kind words and I'm happy you were able to fix it on the cheap :)
You're very welcome. Good thing you could access the lift gate from the inside to swap out the latch. Had you had a locking tonneau cover it that it would be really difficult to get open.
I'm assuming you're in the US. In Canada we kinda get screwed on good quality cheaper alternatives. The doorman equivalent branded latch cost just as much as the genuine toyota one so naturally I purchased a toyota handle assembly.
As long as you can access the screws to take off the lift gate cover then yes, you can do it open or closed. This only becomes difficult IF you have a locking tonneau cover on the bed that prevents you from getting into the truck bed.
That depends. Can you access the back of the tailgate? If you have a tonneau cover that is locked then you'll have to break into the truck bed first. If it is just stuck closed but you can get to it via the back then yes no problem taking it apart.
really the chevy's have no rear removable panel? How the heck are you supposed to service the lift gate latch then? If I recall correctly even the Cadillac Escalade I did years ago had a latch access handle.
@@piercedasian well the escalade is an SUV with a plastic interior panel, so of course that can be removed. The silverados and Sierras have a solid tailgate. You service the latch by removing 3 bolts from the inside face of the tailgate which hold the latch in place and then popping out the plastic cover that surrounds the handle. It's just a tight space getting the latch rods and bolts back in place. Look up a Chevy tailgate on Google if you don't believe me..
I wish I could buy from RockAuto and not have to pay ridiculous shipping and taxes. In the US it definitely makes sense to buy from them. They're the Amazon of the auto industry.
Yeah up in my neck of the woods they said the Dorman one wasn't available even though I know you can order it from Rock Auto (though they didn't have ANY stock). What was even stranger was that the parts joint had a price for a Dorman but it sure as heck wasn't $55. It was almost as much as the Toyota handle. Either way, I couldn't buy it if I wanted to so back to the speakership I went.
my braces are doing well, I get them off at the end of the summer so that will be a bittersweet moment when that time comes. I've had them on for so much of my adult life that it would likely feel weird to not have them on my teeth. I'll do an update video when I have some time although not much has changed a heck of lot other than my orthodontist trying to stabilize everything such that my teeth are where they should be the the braces come off.
Ah but I'm in Canada and everything here is like 10x more expensive. The ones I could find in my neck of the woods have no hole for the rear backup camera. Aftermarket was available but I'd save a whopping $20.00 so I opted to buy one from Toyota instead.
Permitted its cheap then nothing wrong with that. The factory toyota replacement handle was STUPID expensive for what it is. Makes me wonder if I wasted a bunch of money replacing the latch when I could've ordered one from rock auto for like 1/10th price.
@piercedasian Nah. I decided my time was worth something and ordered the toyota piece this time. It's much nicer- probably needs lubed once a year and would last forever.
Felt a bit overwhelmed and confused on the latch assembly before coming across your excellent video.

Glad you liked the video. Super easy fix wasn't it?

glad you were able to save a few $$$. This repair is so simple it's a joke and what the dealership charges to install it is a bit mind-blowing.
I'll double this comment. Great video and thank you!
Just bought my new latch on eBay for $12.00. Not factory ... Great review.
Man I wish I could buy parts for my truck that cheap. Toyota's factory latch was so bloody expensive!
An absolute life saver! Your video was very thorough, and user friendly. You saved me $$$ from having to take the truck in and having it repaired! Thank you!!!
glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching!
Omg @6:03 is a crucial step and I was stuck not being able to open until I came across this video. Good work.
Glad that crucial step was covered in my video. Thanks for stopping by!

Best instructional video I have seen and used! Just successfully replaced my tailgate handle, thanks to this video.
Glad you were able to fix your truck. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for having this post. It really is as easy as you make it look. I changed out my Tundra tailgate handle in less than 10 mins.
Thank you for this wonderful/thorough video. I appreciated the help!
Excellent video
Easy to understand and follow. Thanks to Robert Dungan's comments, mine broke in the closed position also.
Yep it is pretty darned easy to take this lift gate latch handle out in the closed or open position. Glad you were able to fix your truck.

Thanks for posting this video! Replacing my handle was a piece of cake.
glad it all worked out for you!
Thanks for the video, huge help. My gate was stuck shut so had to remove the panels while closed.
You're very welcome. Good thing you could access the lift gate from the inside to swap out the latch. Had you had a locking tonneau cover it that it would be really difficult to get open.
Thank you for the video! Just replaced mine today with ease because of this!!
Thank you for posting this. Will be replacing mine tomorrow.
you're most welcome. Hope things work out for you.
Thank you very much, really easy following your instructions
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!

Not all hero’s wear Capes! Thanks for the vid.
you're most welcome. Thanks for watching!
So easy to follow! Also, you can now find the part much cheaper - got mine on Amazon for $24 USD
You’re so lucky... I wish I could get parts that cheap in Canada. Even the aftermarket dorman branded option was something silly like $140 CAD!
Thanks fixing to do this right now
Glad you liked the video!
Great video thanks so much. I was going to go to the dealer, but I think I will give it a go... Thank again.
odd that I'm seeing your comment 1 year after the fact. Hopefully you fixed your own latch and didn't have to pay the stealership to fix it.
very informative video that taught me how to fix my moms truck lol but there was cheaper prices online instead of 100$
I'm assuming you're in the US. In Canada we kinda get screwed on good quality cheaper alternatives. The doorman equivalent branded latch cost just as much as the genuine toyota one so naturally I purchased a toyota handle assembly.

Great video! Well done.
Can you do this with the tail gate in the up position? I broke the handle off lol
I have the same problem. The handle broke while trying to lower the tailgate.
As long as you can access the screws to take off the lift gate cover then yes, you can do it open or closed. This only becomes difficult IF you have a locking tonneau cover on the bed that prevents you from getting into the truck bed.
Yep, as long as you can get into the box then you can replace the handle while the tail gate is closed.
Thank you I will try to do it myself for my moms 2011 Tundra n let you know!!!!👍👍👍👍
Good luck!
Awesome vid! Thanks a lot
You're very welcome!
Hey buddy, where've ya been? So you have a back up camera??? LOL, Seriously? My my, life is getting easier. going to send you an email later.
send me your vid link! The link sent doesn't seem to work properly.
I did, check your email
Very helpful. Thank you.
you're welcome.
Will this process work if the tail gate is closed?
That depends. Can you access the back of the tailgate? If you have a tonneau cover that is locked then you'll have to break into the truck bed first. If it is just stuck closed but you can get to it via the back then yes no problem taking it apart.
Once I got the part for about 30 dollars US it took 10 minutes.
Thanks
Wow I wish I could pay $30 for the latch handle. I paid nearly $200 CAD for mine at the Toyota dealership :(
@@piercedasian so did I for my first one in 2009, this time I had time for research.
Do you know the size of the bolts that hold the latch to the body, for whatever reason both of mine are missing
If memory serves me correctly they are 6m x 1.00 metric bolts.
Thank you!
You’re very welcome!
was very helpful. thanks man
you're most welcome!
Where's a good place to buy a new Key Cylinder? The dealership? I bought a new tailgate but the handle has no lock.
The dealership is the best place to order a new lock cylinder.
Wow. Did you put all that grease on there, or is that the way Toyota packages them? If so, I'm going to grease mine up like that.
That is how the latch came from Toyota and I added just a tiny bit more.
Thanks buddy
No problem 👍
I bought mine from eBay for 40$ and they had it at O'Reilly for 100$ but my tundra has no camera.
you're luck you can buy replacement handles for so cheap. My tundra handle was EXPENSIVE @ Toyota.
Cool, looks easy as pie, the chevys arent as fun because you can't take that panel off....
really the chevy's have no rear removable panel? How the heck are you supposed to service the lift gate latch then? If I recall correctly even the Cadillac Escalade I did years ago had a latch access handle.

Put tape over the lens after you remove the camera.
good point. I'll have to remember that the next time I replace parts around cameras.
I bought a cheapy on rock auto 10$. Seems solid enough though
I wish I could buy from RockAuto and not have to pay ridiculous shipping and taxes. In the US it definitely makes sense to buy from them. They're the Amazon of the auto industry.
Dorman makes a handle for around $55 US. Not as sturdy looking as the OEM.

Ouch.
yeah tell me about it. They call them the stealership for a reason...
How about your braces?

Those handles are $30 on Amazon.

My cheap Chinese replacement handle broke after maybe 5yrs. Probably worth buying one every 5 years over the stock part.
Permitted its cheap then nothing wrong with that. The factory toyota replacement handle was STUPID expensive for what it is. Makes me wonder if I wasted a bunch of money replacing the latch when I could've ordered one from rock auto for like 1/10th price.

20 bucks on Amazon, either way I'm doing mine today.
Good luck!
FYI, Amazon has handles available for
they have handles but not with the camera hole - at least not the last time I checked.
I bought this part for $23.95 from parts geek
wow I WISH I paid that. Toyota Canada charges a fortune for these parts and the aftermarket availability in my city wasn't much cheaper.
Great video Thank you
