Stephan Kesting shows how to tie your BJJ or Judo belt so it won't come off during training. Download your free copy of The Roadmap for BJJ at www.grapplearts...
After a year of training and my belt always falling off I tried the second one on the video and the belt stayed on really tight the whole class. Really looking forward to the 'how to untie your belt' video since this was two weeks ago and I'm getting funny looks from my patients at the hospital turning up in a gi every day which is really starting to smell
For any new Jits practitioners unsure about Stephan's instruction, his was the first instruction I bought (I prefer the apps versions). Coming to 1 year into my Jiu-jitsu journey, I still come back to the for review before classes, and analysis after classes.
i had to watch the fancy way 20 times and in slow motion but i got it and its a big difference in the way i tied my belt before this is great!!. For this and all the others things u show sthephan Thank U!
I do a weird combo of the two ways. You do the wraparound from the second method, but the knot from the first one. This seems to work for me, but your mileage may vary.
Dude, awesome! So my instructor showed me this after I joined a new gym a few months ago, and I thought, "what the heck is this? it's..amazing." and I could never remember how to do it and felt so dumb. LOL now I can watch this video over and over until I can remember it! :D yay!
Hey Stephan, do you prefer to tie your belt with rank on the left, right or doesnt matter? I only ask because this has always been a grey area. I know Helio Gracie likes rank on the right, but other Gracies and other practitioners prefer the left. Which side do you prefer and why? Thanks --CMC
I've always tied my belt with the rank ending on my left, but I don't think that was ever something I was told/shown, just always the way I ended up tying it. I *feel* like that is the most common way though.
Thanks for posting Sir! Just a quick question though - I understand this method produces a very tight, secure knot, but is there any guideline for how tight you want the belt itself to be against your body? For example, if it's really tight, I'll barely be able to get my hand through the belt, whereas a very loose belt would allow me to pass both hands through with ease. Is there a point at either extreme, where an overly tight/loose belt would create a disadvantage for you / advantage for your opponent? Thanks again!
You want your belt loose enough to drop low around your hips. What you don't want to do is constrict your breathing with an overly tight belt if it were to ride up over yor belly or ribs. Basically, as loose as it can be while not falling over your hips. The only other possible consideration is the ease with with which an opponent can "undress" you i.e. pull your lapels out of the belt in order to use the gi top against you for chokes, sweeps and general control.
I know Brown belts that don't know how to tie their belt, lol. Some people like to keep it loose so that the belt doesn't give the opponent an extra grip or leverage. ;) Great content as always.
In Judo, we are NOT interested in a secure knot, because the fight will be interrupted, when loosing the belt. So it will be a an additional break for tieing it up again.
I do the first way, but you're never supposed to have your belt crossed over in the back in traditional Japanese Judo (but I don't know if people care in other countries). You can still have it be flat and pretty using the first method.
Thank you Stephan! Your instructions are the first instructions I can actually follow!... Now I just have to teach my 6 and 8 year olds by Thursday for their lesson!!!

Hahahaha..
Very informative post. Thanks for letting us know why you chose the medical field over comedy. 😛
did you get it off already?
That is the gayest thing ive ever heard
If it didnt fall it wasnt a good training
Thanks Stephen. You have succeeded where MANY others have failed in providing a concise and useful video. Thank you.

The second method is the best and this is the best explanation we found anywhere!! Superb!!
Just started judo. Thanks for including that in your welcome! Greeting from the village of Wincrange in northern Luxembourg.
I have been tying my belt with the super knot for years now and it definitely saves time.
I tested this knot on some of the kids whose belts never stay on. Every single one was still tied at the end of class. Very impressive!
No stone left un-turned.... As always everything you do is chalk full of experience and wisdom... Thanks Stephan.
I was off for a while due to an injury and went blank on how to tie my belt. Thank you so much! It looks great now
some people dont even know how to wear a jock strap. Thanks for the vid. The second technique is amazing. The belt is very hard to lose.
been rolling for 2 months and still find this helpful.

Nice video. Was wondering what brand gi is that. I’m into gis that don’t have branding

Professor - does it matter which side a person's bar & stripes hand on!??
Stripes go on the left side as you're wearing it
If you're a blue belt and your building ur own school how can I get belts for my students?
Took me about a half an hour to get this down at last, lol but I know everything is tight and technically correct!
Thank you Stephen. Like this and many of your other videos

Nathaniel Hagen if u tie ur belt really tight it ends up loosening because ur running or moving

Excellent explanation... good job
Friend stephan, what the obi size must be so it can be tied as yours according to a person's hips/belly circunference? Thank you, beforehand
Thanks Stephan!
Rener Gracie calls it the superlock and goes into more detail.
Thanks! I've always done it starting with the second way, but finishing with the old-fashioned square knot.
this was a life saver
i am a white belt 1 stripe and i do the second one with a different setup but it turns out the same
thanks buddy,
this video was very helpful :)

I know it the better way- making it more tight!
but I like your fun, thats why I watch many times! :D
shouldnt red bar end on other side?

Very good job !!!
Thank you sir!

Cheers I been away from the sport for a year due to injury and have forgotten how to tie my belt and I’m a blue belt lol
Thank you! Today I have a judo lesson and I'm a starter with the uniform so I don't know how to put on a belt so this really helps!
I like the Judo knott best 😁
Thank you
Just started and love how neat the 2nd one looks. Going in tomorrow to try it :)
Thank you. BEST VIDEO!!!!!
a basic square knot is right over left, left over right. then you make a knot that's very tight.
thanks so much sir
Thank you Stephan! Your instructions are the first instructions I can actually follow!... Now I just have to teach my 6 and 8 year olds by Thursday for their lesson!!!

It works! Looks good, stays tied.
Thank you!
the Hollywood Power lock
In japan, men wear gi's left over right. Women wear gi's right over left or you are dead.
Better than China.. If you're woman, you're dead
I still cannot do it lmao been doing judo for 6 years :b
ya
Thank you i did it
Thank You)Good Tutorial
dude I still can't get it right wtf
i like it
Should I be embarrassed to be watching this as a blue belt?! The second method is definitely the best. The first way comes off once or twice a roll.
I’m left handed, soo I go right over left
Best👍
