Looking to buy and couldn't decide until watching this. Tired , i'd absolute forget to lock and dump my dinner in the fire. Decision made - Fire Maple for the win. Thank you!
@nomadicstar7888 yeh it's surprising how easy it is to forget and I know people say 'I wont' but if I can eliminate that chance then its worth doing and you'll not go wrong with the Fire Maple. I've been cooking sausages with mine for a group of 10 today lol 😋
@SimpleAdventuresLLMSX Nice one. They make some good gear. That new stamped steel Skillet looks good. I prefer a top folding handle though. All down to personal preference ain't it 🙂👍
Look, if you think I'm just gonna sit here and watch an 18-minute long video on folding-handle campfire skillets then you really read the room. Well done.
I use a Stanley pan with the underfolding handle like the PF. I like that I can nest my bush pot in it. I don't find it easy to forget to slide the lock. I do like the longer handle on the FM.
@lmcc8798 I think Pathfinder have just released a similar style Skillet that's made from stamped steel and is supposed to season well. Not sure of the weight, think it's a similar size but I bet its a good pan. Stanley make some great gear don't they 🙂👍
The Pathfinder has 2 advantages for me...1 it has a lid which is recessed which allows for stuff to be heated above the lid without falling off and also keeps d heat in. 2 it nests well with a Trangia 25 set.
Cheers Freddy, aye I've used cheap off the shelf ones for years which have done the job fine too 🙂. Ya don't need owt fancy do ya 🙂👍. Atb mate, Rick n Billydog
For me the handle is an issue but the pathfinder is the one I'd chose. Because the position of the handle makes it better for packing .the sausages look 👌
Yeh it's tucked away ain't it 👍. Cheers , hope you're managing yo get plenty of paddling n peddling done 👍 . Billy enjoyed his share of sausages Atb Rick n Billydog
You make a good point about handle . I would use the PF lid on the FM pan If I were baking . I really want an old Cold handle carbon steel pan myself. Good video Sir !
Cheers Robert, yeh I know what ya mean. Would be a lovely pan to own for cooking on an open fire 🔥 . Yeh I'll probably do that with the lid. Cheers atb Rick n Billydog
Great video Rick T. Such an important review! Baffles me how so many bad designs get made and even mass produced. (Same with many foods) Good work fella! Atb
Yeh I know Micky , it's crazy ain't it. Doesn't make sense to me if they're field tested etc. It's a no brained to me 🙂. Cheers Micky, thanks mate, have a top week Atb Rick n Billydog
It depends on what you value. I value not having a handle in the way of nesting a bush pot. There are plenty of people who think guns and knives are "bad" designs. To each their own.
Cheers Paul, aye its definitely something to be aware of 👍 and even then it's easy to miss . I have other Pathfinder gear that's great but I'm definitely with the firemaple design on this one 🙂🔥. Cheers Paul, have a top week Atb Rick n Billydog
I've got a PF bush pot and canteen set and love them both. Well built, well thought out. I don't remember why I chose the PF pot over the FM, but the FM looked nice, too.
Great review Rick but like others say they are over priced. I'm currently using the trangia 27 with my pan tongues and so far so good. But i do agree that path finder do need to sort that locking issue. Thanks buddy. Laters 🔥🤙🏻🙂
whoa! ya bast... 😄 yeah the fire maples definitely the better one. the pathfinder looks just like one they sell at decathlon for £12 and thats a strong looking one. i use my trangia pan for all of my own trips but for the hot tent i just use a big old pan for 2 of us
Haha yeh ya can't beat a Big Old Pan 😄 especially int hot tent. Yeh they do some cracking gear at Decathlon don't they Cheers Phil, have a top week mate Atb Rick n Billydog
Think i agree rik...when your hungry cold etc your not thinking 100% .That handle design is rank.Even your standard mess tin is better than that.nice one.
Decathlon do one too. The handle is more like the Pathfinder (sadly), but it scores against both by being £12. Other than that, very similar specs. Haven't used it much, but seems pretty good, as long as you're careful with the handle. I think if I did find it a problem I'd take the handle off and use a pot grabber. Anyways, all the best to you and Billy.
Hey cheers, yeh that sounds a bargain. They do some bloomin good gear in Decathlon don't they. I've had a fair bit of group climbing gear n ropes etc from them. Cheers fella 🙂👍 Atb Rick n Billydog
That's a hard one Tom. I love cast Iron for in a fixed camp , heavy but great for those steady tasks in camp . Stainless steel is great too and both should last a long time if decent quality and looked after. SS requires more oil n fats etc to stop food sticking to it. If the weights not an issue I'd probably go with cast iron but it's a hard one ain't it . I rarely use my cast iron just because of the weight n stainless steel.usually does me proud 👍. Not exactly a firm answer Cheers fella
Nice one Martin 👍. They good pans ? I've always just used standard small n cheap frying pans until.these and they've always been reyt. Cheers mate, have a top week, atb Rick n Billydog

I have three of the pathfinder and I have no issues with it. Works great for the last 7yrs.

@ColdHarborOP Haha nice one 😆👍. Not many watch the full films but some do . Watch however much ya want eh 🙂👍
Good review, Rick. Point well made regarding the handle safety.

Amen. I use a Stanley with the underfold and nest my bushpot in it. The handle in the way would drive me crazy.
Cheers Rick, good review. All the best. 👍🐾🐾😎
Cheers Rob, thanks mate 🙂👍
Nice and simple review that Rick, I’ve got the smaller fire maple pan, great piece of kit. Thanks pal👍
Aye they do some cracking stuff Simon. Some belting kettles n I've got a stove of theirs that's really good 👍

Hey cheers thankyou 🙂🙂👍
Nice video ❤
Cheers, thankyou 🙂👍
The rivots look stronger on the Pathfinder.
Ya know, I never studied the rivets. I'll have a butchers now 👍👍
They messed up on the fire maple. They should have done it more like the Stanley cook kit. With a lid that is held down by the folding handle.
Yeh, that would have been great. That's definitely how I'd make one for sure if I was designing it. Stanley make some good kit don't they 👍
Honest queation: If you had one skillet to bug out and never come back with, would it be a cast iron or stainless steel?

Bit pricey for me ime still using trangia had 20 years .an it's only alloy 😂.woof to billydog👍

I’ve got a GSI fry pan and the handle folds over like the firemaple but it’s not Stainless steel.
Nice one Martin 👍. They good pans ? I've always just used standard small n cheap frying pans until.these and they've always been reyt.

Great pans non stick as well, which I think puts people off but I’ve not had any issues, plus GSI are a good outdoor firm I think.
@martinoutdoors6941 Great stuff Martin. They sound good 👍
I think they are both overpriced. You can buy an 8-inch pan from anywhere for a tenner.. Just have to live with a non folding handle.
Yeh definitely Timmy, I've used those for years, no issues. Got some cracking cheap pans that have done a great job
Cheers fella, atb mate 🙂👍
