I had severe Thumb Osteoarthritis (bone on bone) in both of my hands (left and right). I tired just about everything including laser warming and nothing helped. Finally, I had surgery to remove the Trapezium and suspend my thumb with tendons between the metacarpal and the index finger - like a suspension bridge. I had this done in Colombia (I lived there for 5 years) by a specialist doctor there (recovery time was 3 months to hand use - full recovery 6 months).. My left hand is going on 9 years now (I'm 73) and my right hand is now 4+. I play guitar and have full hand movement and strength which in my opinion is a very good test. No pain to date. I'm not recommending this to anyone, just sharing my experience. I hope you all the best in your journey to reduce / eliminate your pain.
My wife had 3 surgeries for this condition. I think the first one is the procedure you are describing, and unfortunately, all three surgeries failed, and her hand is basically useless. She had a part-time business making custom purses. That is something she can't do anymore. It is mentally damaging to her. I now have the same problem, and surgery is not going to be an option. Ive had shoulder surgery ( great success), a partial knee replacement ( great success), a trigger finger release (major failure). I figure two out of three is where Ill draw the line. I have been complaining of the pain being a precurser to finally being diagnosed.
Changed my diet, zero sugar, zero wheat, gluten free, night shades free,(white potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant I can eat peppers) exersises and no more pain or swelling in my thumb, knees, feet etc I still have Osteoarthritis but no pain and no swelling. Took 3 months of diet change, document every day what I eat right down to a sugarfree candy. Exersise especially walking, going up and down stairs, weights, bands etc, I still make app with my Dr to make sure I am doing right by myself. Thanks for your video.
That's great advice. Thanks for sharing. I do have another video about diet and arthritis which you can check out here ua-cam.com/video/5x-U0pJJnsk/v-deo.htmlsi=IKGOv6pi12i3ixja
@@michaelkeller971 potato, tomato, peppers, eggplant, also tobacco, I gave up smoking yrs ago by my own will, I do eat yellow and red peppers, seem to be ok, switched white potato to sweet potato, tomatoes bother me so stopped eating those, never had eggplant so not sure of that one, all foods are a trial and error, I keep track of everything I eat. Even a piece of gum or sugar free candy. What you yourself eat could be different from what affects me.
I wish every person who makes a video on here would do what you do and show up front what the video will be about and how long each segment is. I watched the whole video but it was valuable to me to know in advance what was coming. Thank you so much. I will now subscribe!
I got this last year from eating lots of apples and pistachios. In both thumbs. The right became very painful after a injury. I seriously prayed about it and the cause was revealed. I recovered after stopping the nuts snd apples.. resting my hands and praising my Lord and my God Jesus. Be blessed and a blessing.
I have no idea why youtube put your video in my feed, but I'm glad it did. My thumb has weakened over the years, and last year I noticed the squaring you mentioned. It doesn't hurt if I don't stress it. Just knowing what's happened to it is a relief. Thank you for the excellent explanation.
I'm a guitar player with thumb pain in my left hand. I found that coating my hand with cayenne pepper infused castor oil does wonders. Slather on the oil, wrap with gauze then plastic wrap and an elastic bandage before bed. I noticed a difference from day 1.
Regular epsom soaks are very helpful! Also, the golden ratio of 1:1 thc and cbd products really helps when using my thumbs for outdoor chores on my 12 acre forested homestead. I also bought rubber door grips for commonly used doorknobs and knob style bathroom faucet controls.
@EuroWarsOrg. Agreed. ACV is tops. Have some in a covered jar near your relaxing chair. As you watch tv, use cotton pads soaked in vinegar. Drape a tea towel to hold in place, it will build up warmth. If you secured with blue painters tape, you could wear to bed. Doesn’t work unless you use it….be persistent. Keep calendar notes or make recurring email alerts. Something else that works …a pinch clip, something used on the refrigerator door. Has to be just the right one, easy to operate not too tight, don’t cut off circulation, gentle pressure, use the the V -meaty part next to the thumb. You'll know it when you've got it. Great topic. I subscribed!
I'm a guitar player and have to practice every day. If I stop regular practice the pain in my left thumb goes away and comes back if I start up again. There's no way I could use a splint and still play and I've experienced injections for a frozen shoulder and the cure was worse than the condition. I think as I'm 81 years old that I just have to live with the pain which isn't unbearable.
Thanks for commenting. I suspect your thumb arthritis is late stage. The injection might be worth a try but do get it done under image guidance to avoid guesswork and potentially irritating the joint even further. Also, don’t discount surgery. It can give great results and age is not a barrier to it. I would ask your doctor for a specialist hand opinion. Best wishes. Stephen.
Talk with your Dr before taking any vitamins I experience rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis I'm supplementing with , - D3 1000 iu and k2 300 mcg ( micrograms) Good for bones - magnesium glycinate 200 mg helps with bones - boron 3 mg for bones -hyaluronic acid 100 mg for joint support - omega 3 1000 mg Helps with bones and joints Choose non gmo vitamins and minerals. walmart or other grocery stores sell junk brands that do nothing at all and is a waste of money. I hope this helps you
The cortisone injection was not well placed if it did not work. And being 81 you should be retired, just stop playing till the tendons heal. Massage castor oil slightly warmed not hot then wrap something to keep it warm. I got a pair of cosmetic electric gloves . They have low medium and high levels. Keep it on low as long as you can,but do unplug before you go to sleep.
The brace I use is so much smaller than what he showed and of course I can’t find the name of it. I think you could probably still play music with this one
Thank you for explaining what I have been suffering for for many years. I thought I had Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, but this makes much more sense. Either way the Doctors will probably not do much about it, but you have given me some good information on how to best treat myself. That is what I needed most. Kudos to you!
I too thought it was Carp[el tunnel I had , but when finally I did see a consultant after waiting (TRUTH) 4 years to see one ,he told me it wasn`t CT it was osteoarthritis in both thumbs ,and it was worse in my right thumb (Which it is ). That was 7 or more months ago , and I havn`t heard a thing from anyone since. I suspect they hope I die before I`m seen next if they draw it out long enough. .
Thanks, you've confirmed what I thought was wrong with my thumbs, my flair ups come and go. The best relief I have, is when I come off sugar, sugar causes inflammation, and this definitely helps in my case :D
Really helpful, clear and informative video. Thank you! Was recently diagnosed with stt oa and have been trawling the Internet for help - your video is far and away the most useful thing I've found so far.
I've had osteoarthritis in my 👐 hands, wrists. right foot and ankle, right BIG toe, left knee and hip, spine, neck and just recently developed it in my 👍 THUMB. ABSOLUTE AGONY. 😏
Maybe you have a wheat allergy. I have one but I quit wheat and so much crazy pains went away .I was only in my late 40s .If you quit eating wheat it will also lower your blood sugar level better than anything. Good luck . Castor oil helps too .
You need to get tested for Inflammation. You are allergic or your body is fighting something. Milk allergy? Wheat Allergy? Some sort f food allergy? A detailed blood workup can maybe expose it
Excellent, straightforward explanations. It’s an added courtesy to viewers that Mr. Bunting lets them know what he will be talking about and where that topic occurs in the video. Nicely done!
I'm glad you explained thumb joint pain. This info was not given to me when i suffered with the pain and losing the use of my thumbs. I did the cortisone shots and wore a brace for monts. Ive had the surgery in both thumbs with a bone taken out of each hand. My hands have never been better,, its been almost 20 years since the surgery.
My paternal grandmother had this thumb pain, my father had it, and now my sister and I have it. I thought it was heredity. Thank you for the discussion. I'm 72 and have used my hands a lot in repetitive tasks almost all my life. I think I am at the stage where the small thumb splint will work. I am also at the age where various doctors are needed ( I live in the USA). I guess I'll add one more! I'll tell my sister about this video. Thanks.
Thanks for commenting Marie. There is definitely a generic component to this condition but we know the causes are multifaceted and probably a combination of different risk factors including genetics. I’m glad you found the information helpful. Best wishes. Stephen.
I just had surgery on my left thumb. Nice and cleaned up and hardly hurts. Can’t wait to do the other hand. Great video. I hope people get some relief from the daily pain.
Recently had my big toe surgically cleaned up and fused. Now pain free and can finally walk properly again. Will have a hand specialist look at my thumb this year. If the same can be achieved that would be fantastic. Great video, thank you!
What REALLY HELPED me with my cmc joint swelling and pain was taking turmeric capsules with black pepper in them. Pain went from 8-9 to maybe 1. I got them at Costco. I also used a cream with bee venom, called Apireven. It's greasy so I only used it at night. That helped a lot but the turmeric and black pepper capsules did wonders
Thanks fir the suggestion. I’ve collated a few similar suggestions in another video here which you might find interesting ua-cam.com/video/5x-U0pJJnsk/v-deo.htmlsi=4a87rzt6mG-OWvIF
@@XjtBA I take 2 a day, after lunch, so I have something in my stomach. I don't know about knee arthritis, but from what I read, arthritis is mainly inflammation in the body, and turmeric helps with that apparently.
I bought a blue epitact thumb support for nighttime use from my local chemist and have found my thumb sufficiently rested while I sleep to be able to work a good eight hours the next day. Best £15 I ever spent!
Very strong genetic component. Mine (non-dominant hand) was very bad by age 56 but 'burned out' after about 5 years. The lump is still there but no longer painful
Thank you SO VERY MUCH!! 11minutes w/ you taught me more than 2 visits to a Hand Surgeon. Had an X-ray diagnosis of Basal Thumb Arthritis; am currently looking for a new Doc for 2nd opinion. Also looking for Occupational Therapist, which this Surgeon prescribed, when I balked at the offer of injections. I told him I'd like less invasive options first. He never offered any exercise & wouldn't even explain the brace & how it's supposed to work like you did.
Ah thanks Karen. That’s great to read as the whole idea of the channel is to try and mimic the information you would expect to get from a good quality medical consultation. I’m so pleased that you found it helpful. Best wishes. Stephen.
I’m a quilter & my left thumb pain was cramping my style. I had surgery last year to remove the joint. Wore a cast for 6 weeks & had a couple months of therapy & I’m as good as new!
Thank you so much for this video! You are the first to explain this problem so well. I woke up one morning in 2020 ( in central US) after months of being very ill with COVID to find my thumb laying flat to my palm & severely limited in being able to open back opening up my palm. I have worked on it on my own since as no medical person would offer any advice & now I have it 10-15 degrees yet from being able to totally open back making my palm flat. Common sense drove me to get a supporting brace & I continue to work it trying to gently flatten the palm & get the full range of motion returned. Your video has encouraged me & suggests I've been doing the best course of action for it. I am subscribing to your channel.
I have this, and other areas affected by arthritis. I’m pain free now that I’ve switched to a mostly carnivore diet. If I eat bread or processed food, the chronic pain returns.
I use a Push meta grip CMC brace. A little pricier than the others but it is smaller while still providing great support. It even fits under gardening gloves. I can do most of my usual activities wearing it.
What a great and helpful video! Thank you so much! And I am also very grateful for so many useful comments. Wishing everybody quick relief of this condition, and all the best for this wonderful Doctor! 💐
I recently had the surgery for thumb osteoarthritis and am very happy I did. I tried cortisone injections, they didn’t help at all. I used the gel (Voltaren) I used ibuprofen, and splints. The day the nerve block wore off I had no pain at all. I did PT for several weeks and can now do everything I couldn’t do before the surgery. If the recommended courses of action described above work, that’s great. They didn’t work for me and surgery was the only and best option. Within the next few months I’ll be having it done on my right thumb and am looking forward to having the other thumb being pain free.
Years ago I read about interlocking the fingers of both hands & then rotating the thumbs fast. It oxygenates the joint really well. Gives enormous relief
Brilliant video, thank you so much. My husband suffers really badly but this will explain to him what it’s all about and what he can do to help himself. The video is simple to understand and broken down into very manageable sections. Really appreciate your help.
I took a bad fall and it hurt my thumb/wrist. It wasn't broken but I guess that caused the arthritis. It would ache all day long. I since found Frankincense oil and it has alleviated the constant pain. It still hurts when I over-rotate the joint so I am very careful. This was a great video. Lots of good info and a clear explanation. Thank you.
I have this. I found forearm and gripping exercises to be VERY effective. Much better than any splint or wrap. It was extremely painful and now seems to be gone.
This was such a concise and informative video. I have had thumb osteoarthritis for a few years (I’m 54 now). I am experiencing squaring of the joint already. Back in July 2023 I received a cortisone injection which provided almost 100% relief. However, the pain has returned and I’m now using splints again. Thank you for your information!
Glad it was helpful. That's a good result from the injection, its just a shame it didn't last longer. I have patients who I inject every 6 months for this and they are quite happy with that regime, as they aren't interested in surgery. If you have it done again, I would suggest still using the splint after but just for strenuous activities, in order to avoid a flare up and therefore prolong the life of the injection. Best wishes. Stephen.
I'm a 76 yr young Great grandmother n at age 40 i experienced such terrible pain in my left thumb joint that all I cld do at night was to lay there with my hand still as can be on my chest. Tears just rolled down my cheeks n all I cld do was pray. I saw a hand surgeon n he did surgery n replaced the cartledge. After recovery, I started catering with my aunt. Oh, by the way, I m right handed but this was in my left hand: I m ambidextrous. After 5 yrs of catering it started hurting just as bad as the 1st surgery. So my hand doctor did what he called a "capsulation". Well, it didn't last long because I don't stop. I was pretty active. The cartledge had broken in half n now I have bone on bone.😢. Anyway, I had a repeat production on my right side, same thing. He did a tendon transfer n anchored a "tiny" anchor where the cartledge went. I have flare ups now n then, but it seemed to help more. I was dx with osteopinia n I believe I have osteoporosis now. 4 fusions in my neck n in my hands my fingers have been turning n becoming disfigured. As I said before...I'm an active person, but for the past 15 years I've gotten progressively worse. I have full blown Fibromyalgia. God has given me the strength to endure. When the pain gets too bad, I stop n rest for how ever long I have to. My husband is awesome with The care he gives me n he has an autoimmune disease; Systemic Scleraderma. If you have constant pain go n see a hand specialist, mine was great. I pray God touches each n every one of you who goes through this cause it is truly painful.
Yes we mustn’t underestimate the power of prayer in our lives. Every pain I get I touch the area with holy water and it goes away or lessens a lot. I’ve managed to keep at bay any interaction with health providers that way. I’m 75 and take no meds at all.
EXCELLENT. Describes exactly what I have and what the specialist I went to said. Don't know yet how it will turn out, but I learned more from this guy than from the doctor I saw.
For over a year I had pain at the base of my thumb and wrist. I thought it might have been tendonitis. I had considered a wrist brace and found some relief using an arthritis cream. I finally got rid entirely of the pain when I started sawing logs in the spring. A completely new activity for me. Within a week the pain had disappeared and I have been pain free for over 6 months now. Seems like strengthening larger muscles is what was needed.
I have this in both thumbs, and right wrist, where I also have a hard lump, when I went to the doctors she said it was wear and tear from being a secretary for years, and put on my notes PAIN IN THUMB. No help whatsoever, so this video has been very helpful. Thank you.
The "Push Brace" was a game-changer for my osteoarthritis in my CMC joint. I tried several splints but they did not work at all. The Push Brace separates the two bones at the CMC joint. I am unable to retrieve my fly line in my left hand without this brace as it requires a firm grip of the line. Holding my fly rod in my right hand for some reason does not aggravate that CMC joint. They run about $100.00 and I have multiple sets of Push Braces that are used specifically for working on chores, another for sleeping each night, and one dedicated to fly fishing. If not for these braces, I would be unable to enjoy life as much as I do.
This was wonderfully informative and easy to follow. My thumb arthritis gives me fits at time, trying as it does to keep up with their chums in my back and knees. 😅 Getting old is definitely NOT for sissies, since we are himan and can't get interchangeble parts easily. Will adopt your exercise suggestions in future.
I hear you, sister. I have some issues at the base of my left thumb, but now my right thumb at the joint near the nail is misbehaving. It hangs up, pops, and is painful when it does. Don't get me started on my knees and their bad cartilage. Big bummer.
Thank you. I just started having symptoms of this in the lower thumb joint. The muscle part (that I call the drumstick) is swollen and painful to the touch. I appreciate your suggestions and will give it a try.
I recently had surgery to remove the small bone where my arthritis was. Its such a long healing process (12 weeks). I had tried everything but within a year of treatments and braces and cortisone shots I couldn't use my left hand, so that sealed the deal for getting the surgery. I can't wait for this to be over. I appreciate your explanation bc its the most thorough I've found.
Very well said. I am a retired RN and remember laughing when I saw a "total thumb replacement" on the surgery schedule. Haha on me now 40 years later as I massage my damaged thumb/wrist area. I will look into your suggestions for thumb splints. Thanks for the info!
My thumb pain has flared up the last few weeks, and I’ve discussed this with my family (when it flares up, I cannot open bottles or jars, so they have to help me). Then this video popped up out of the blue! Tell me my iPad is not listening to me - ha! Well, it had mostly information I already knew, but did encourage me to get out my splits again. I do sewing and knitting, and know when I’ve done too much. Then I have to avoid those activities for a time and let my hands rest.
Yeh it’s funny how the iPad just knows ?!? Yes the splints can really help if you manage to find one that suits you. Some suggestions are in the video description. Best wishes. Stephen.
Wonderful and informative video. I am 68 and just the last few weeks noticed both thumbs are hurting badly with searing pain after I shuffled cards for a prolonged period. Once I stopped that activity, I saw a marked improvement. Someone else will take over shuffling and hopefully it won't come back.
I have severe arthritis in both thumbs and peripheral carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands, I had one carpal tunnel operation many years ago that helped for a few years. My hands are now totally useless. I have severe pain and a lack of strength in my hands, I am unable to pick up things because they are so weak and painful, and trying to wash and dress is very difficult. I waited two years to see a specialist, she just wasn't interested and informed me she couldn't help me. She said that I may have neuropathy in my hands because I have been a diabetic for 48 years.
This is the most comprehensive, clear, and easy to understand explanation of this condition I have ever seen. I have Ehlers-Danlos so my joints breakdown very quickly very easily and we get osteoarthritis quite young. When my doctor x-rayed my hands he blurt out "oh my God what did you do to your thumbs". Because both thumbs, at the joints that you mentioned, are bone on bone. That was nearly 10 years ago in my 50s to early 60s. I'm 69 now. I might consider the brace, no one even mentioned that to me. But something else that does help me when my joint jams and the pain becomes horrible is that my chiropractor can relieve the pressure on the joint by releasing said joint with a good tug. He's been doing it for about a year now and I am doing so much better both pain-wise and flexibility. It's not a cure just a treatment. But I hadn't heard about the hiuronic acid (sp?). I may look into that. But anyway I just wanted to say thank you.
Thanks for the kind comment. Much appreciated. Yes hyaluronic acid injections can be a useful alternative to cortisone. The chiropractor can’t help this condition in the long term with traction manipulation but I agree it can cause some temporary pain relief. The splints can be very helpful. Always worth a try. See the video description for suggestions
@@PhysioMSK Thank you. Yes the chiropractic facilitates the unjamming of the joint when it has become so stuck that the pain is literally unbearable and I can barely move the thumb. I used to be able to do it on my own and did it for years, that is, through manipulation and movement and what have you, I could unjam it. But then it just got so tight that I could not do it on my own and it barely moved. Not an uncommon problem with Ehlers-Danlos and age. I have assumed for quite some time now that the chiropractic treatment would only be temporary which is why I'm interested in the hyaluronic acid treatment. Are you familiar with Ehlers-Danlos? I would assume so if you're a physical therapist, or you should be. I found it interesting that you said this was a problem for women, because of our higher flexibility. That is something they are finding out about Ehlers-Danlos, for the same reason. The type I have, hypermobility, is much higher in women than men. Children before puberty tend to have it equally as severe or not. But when puberty hits, boys tend to get better and women get marketably worse, and it is on average that we begin to have full body pain by the age of 15, as I and my daughter did. But because it tends to manifest in older girls and women, there's little known about the disease, there's little to no research on it, and we are grossly under Diagnosed. I was not diagnosed till I was 54 along with my 28-year-old daughter. It's not uncommon for people, women like us to not only take decades to get diagnosed, but to be misdiagnosed and mistreated during that time as well.
@@LiluBob yes I agree EDS is a difficult problem to manage and will tend to affect joint with an inherent laxity such as the thumb CMC, shoulders and knee cap joints. The thumb splints are likely to be your best option. Or you could see a surgeon about fusion, trapeziectomy or joint replacement. Best wishes. Stephen.
Thank you for the information. It gave me a clear picture of my condition and at the sane time gave me the options for treatment. I will admit that my condition stems from the fact that I read too many ebooks and I use my affected thumb too much flipping the pages.
I have just found your channel and recently diagnosed with OA of both thumbs. I have seen different 2 different physios recently about this condition and each physio said I had to wear a different type of splint . I now use the both black and brown types. However neither physio explained why I should wear them or how they should help. All I was told is that “ at my age I have worn my joints out “. Having seen your video I now understand a lot more about OA and the why and how for splint use helps. So thank you for making OA of thumb easy to understand.
I have been an artist and crafter my entire life and still do that. I stopped eating sugar about 4 years ago and my impression is that it has improved the condition. Also, I find warmth really helpful. I took a stretchy glove and cut the fingers off. I also wear it at night. If it is really bad, I apply diclofenac gel.
I have suffered from this for many years aside from pain killers I use a sort of glove that covers the area and found even though it is not very firm the warmth it provides helps a great deal
Very clear explanation. Im 84 and have had the condition for about ten years in both my little fingers. I do have viking ancestry though my father mainly Danish and Finnish. Its a bit if an issue at times as they get hooked up but I have learned to live with it Dad had it in only one little finger.
almost 50 years as a cabinetmaker (still working at 72) and this just happened about 2 months ago. pretty tough to do woodworking without the use of the left thumb. It gets lots of exercise every day. Just bought a thumb splint and will see if I can work with it.
Thank you for the video. I am a musician and had the surgery on my left hand 20 years ago. Now at 75 years old I have the same thumb condition on my right hand. Had 2 cortisone shots. The 1st shot worked for 5 months and the 2nd shot was not effective.I have been playing guitar for 60 years and would like to continue so I have appointment with a hand surgeon.
This sounds utterly counter-intuitive, but it was the LACK of movement that worstened the arthritis in my LEFT thumb. I am right-handed, so I was holding my painter's palette with my left hand, not moving the thumb at all. Exercise, magnets (Nikken) and especially changes to my diet made a huge difference.
@@sbeasley7585 Eventually, I literally changed everything I ever thought I knew about food. But that came much later. My first First-Aid measure, so to speak, was to stop using a palette altogether; I put the paint on a porcelain plate on a small tableé next to my easel Have heard similar stories from other professional painters.
I thought this was a very well presented simple ,concise and well spoken video presentation , just the sort of thing that you would expect from a really good GP and or a specialist. thank you very much .....excellent
I developed this thumb joint pain and found that if I take a 2 mg capsule of Copper Gluconate which costs 5 cents per capsule, it quickly WIPED OUT this pain and some other joint pains. So, my advice is spend 5 cents and give it a try, but make sure to swallow the capsule and wash it down with water or juice and DON"T allow it to dissolve in your mouth because it will trigger a brief response to vomit. In your stomach its fine with no such response. It also makes your joints stronger so you can twist off that tight jar lid.
7 years ago i had the thumb surgery to remove my basal thumb joint. Omg what a hard surgery. Now i have had 3 failed back surgeries including a fusion that left me with 8 screws and rods in my lumbar spine. This thumb surgery was every bit as bad as my spinal fusion. A silly little thumb bone being removed and the tendon from the same arm replacing that bone. Ugh pain and agony on me.
I have always been exceptionally strong and active. I always had a grip that was exceptional. I hyper-extended my thumb and for years following, it would swell up and hurts for weeks at a time. I called it my glass thumb socket. They cleaned out the damaged socket and installed a ball in the place of the socket. It is as if I never injured it now. No pain and my full grip has returned.
Thank you for the very good diagrams and advice on getting the right amount of movement and rest. Didn't get this sort of help from my doctor, but it has proven very productive. Thumbs up from Canada!!
This was one of very few very clear spoken, well explained and you didn’t bow smoke up my butt, Thx for this information, yes I have this exact problem, had X-rays and other test to confirm this problem. also it’s been two weeks since I had Carpel Tunnel surgery. I did ask the surgeon if the operation would help ?? And direct answer was NO and I needed to see my Dr. About this as I already have rebooked. 40 years as a carpenter and doing fine detail work has done a toll on my body and BOTH hands wrists etc. Enough of the crying, thx again and will look for more of your vedio s …great job. 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks very much for taking the time to comment Dan. Much appreciated. I would agree that a CT decompression won’t help your thumb much but hopefully some of the info in the video might be useful. Good look with it. Best wishes. Stephen.
My lower thumb knuckles seem to have been absorbed somehow, & the bones below have swollen up, where the 'squaring' is. My thumb base palm ('chicken leg') muscles have almost vanished into hollows too, but fortunately I can still do most small tasks that don't require force. An expert hand surgeon I saw said that although there's no cure, mine had bottomed out & won't get any worse. The pain has now stopped, hooray!
Thanks for your detailed description of the problem and what do do about it. When I was diagnosed, all I was told about my splint was to hand wash it. Since i still have intermittent pain, I'm going back to using it 24/7 for a while and then try your "weaning" procedure.
I have found compression gloves ( MaxiFlex gloves with the fingers cut short) help a lot. Get them a little tighter than normal. Helped me get through the last year before retiring. Much cheaper than "arthritis" gloves. Type 34-874
I'm a gardener, who has a passion for pruning and taking cuttings. I never had this thumb pain until a few months ago (aged 57). Can't imagine having to give up gardening, but I do have a tube of that Capsicain cream (I use that on my back occasionally. Got it from eBay years ago, probably before it became a prescription medication). Don't like to keep bothering my doctor with my joint problems, but if this doesn't work I'll get a course of anti inflammatory tablets again. I had those for my feet and ankles one time because they don't flex too well any more and the tablets worked a treat.
I had bad pain in the pad at the base of my thumb for a couple years. Went on an elimination diet (Carnivore diet) and after just a few weeks the pain was gone. Stayed eating this way pretty much, and it has never returned. A number of other physical ailments resolved too.
Had hyleuronic injections in both thumbs. One thumb has been pain free since the first injection. The second thumb is much less painful but regularly requires supplementary injections. Pain in 2sd thumb has been reduced by approximately 90%.
I have been treating my thumb and wrist osteoarthritis with doxycycline since 2017! I wasn't able to play guitar anymore and I was having trouble driving and holding the steering wheel. Fusion surgery was next. Dentist gave me doxycycline and on a fluke, with in a week the bacteria level dropped which lowered the inflammation! Pain and swelling and forward progress of the osteoarthritis down by 80%. Today, driving and guitar playing and without surgery! When pain starts returning, 1 to 2 100 mg halts It!✋👍
Thank you for that informative video! I have no doubt my thumb arthritis comes from being an auto worker!!! It’s embarrassing when I have to get my wife to open jars for me. I’m going to be mostly retired at Christmas and hope the thumb will improve with out all the repetitive work! I’m certainly going to keep those splints in mind, thank you!
It’s really common for thumb base pain to settle after retirement so I hope this holds true in your case. In the meantime the splints can be very helpful.
Thank you so much for your informative video! I have osteoarthritis of both thumbs (right>left which is interesting as I am left-handed) and have been diagnosed with bone spurs in both. They are very painful, I have used splints as much as possible, take meloxicam PRN, and have had 2 injections to the right thumb. A surgeon recommended surgery to the right hand which involved removing the trapezium, then using a ligament from my forearm to "fold up" and act as a spacer for the missing bone. I just couldn't bring myself to do that. It just seemed too complex and am doing my best to manage with the splints and infrequent use of Meloxicam. Thank you again for your video!
Yes that’s the standard operation for this condition. It usually works very well and it’s really not that complicated. Other surgical options are fusion or joint replacement. Hope you continue to manage without surgery though. Best wishes. Stephen.
Very informative, thank you. I'm pretty sure the reason my left thumb is as bad as it is, I am right handed, is because I knit and crochet, this causes a lot of pressure holding the yarn and the second needle. And women of my age ALL used to knit ( I am 75) The new generations are probably going to suffer with typing (tapping out) pains. I just give up the practise till it calms down and then start all over again. And only knit small things that weigh less and take less work to finish.
Thank you for the information. My doctor told me there wasn't much I can do but I will definitely try what you advised. So there is at least some hope on the horizon ...
I suffered this many years ago. The pain was violent and painful, although not all the time. But carrying or holding things was really difficult. Simplest example was that it was really difficult to even carry a cup and saucer in one hand. Thankfully I was told to try magnesium oil and it's was a life changer, so much so I am now pain free. Better still, I always wiped xs oil from my hands on my knees and an issue in my knee has also now gone.
Excellent video and informative. I'm a plumber so work with my hands, and as you'd expect, both my thumbs give me trouble, which has been getting worse over the last couple of years. I've tried various hand supports, but my hands are constantly in and out of water, and doing fiddly jobs, so the supports get in the way too much. I always end up taking them off after a couple of hours.
Yeh it’s not easy. It might be worth considering an injection. They are quick and easy. The surgery would keep you off work for 3 months per thumb so not ideal unless you can spare the time. It is a good operation though and would hopefully provide a permanent fix. Good luck and best wishes. Stephen.
Thank you for the very good explanation. I suffered for years with this (and other joint pain) but it all stopped after discontinuing a certain blood pressure water pill. I take a different one now but it is a very low dose and I have no pain.
I used Turmeric with Ginger/pepper daily with GREAT results! Inflammation goes way down and the same time the throbbing pain subsides dramatically 2400-3000mg daily with something fatty like milk or sausage
Thank you. I've enjoyed watching this video, clearly explained, and very well presented. I suffer with this condition, as an artist, it has caused me to reduce the amount of time I spend at the easel. I have found that certain foods cause a flare up.
You’re very welcome. Yes many people have told me that their diet can influence their arthritis. I did another looking at this here ua-cam.com/video/5x-U0pJJnsk/v-deo.htmlsi=UdxRTvr5yGG32alJ
Excellent Thanks. I appreciate info. Have pain in both thumbs and thought my thumbs were going come out of my hand with the pain. I will try the exercise and check on the hand braces.
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad this works for you. This is the most common operation used for this condition, for good reason. It can work very well.
I appreciate you sharing your experience! This is probably what my dr will do for me when injections are no longer effective.
There is a newer surgery called Button Surgery with much less recovery time. My doc didn’t tell me, I found it on my own. Trying PRP first.
Thank you for sharing I feel better about getting the surgery
It is good to change the diet.
What is “ Night Shades Free” ?
@@michaelkeller971 potato, tomato, peppers, eggplant, also tobacco, I gave up smoking yrs ago by my own will, I do eat yellow and red peppers, seem to be ok, switched white potato to sweet potato, tomatoes bother me so stopped eating those, never had eggplant so not sure of that one, all foods are a trial and error, I keep track of everything I eat. Even a piece of gum or sugar free candy. What you yourself eat could be different from what affects me.

A true teacher!
Weird, I got it from eating weetbix and bananas.
Glory be to God

I thought apple is always safe to eat
I have no idea why youtube put your video in my feed, but I'm glad it did. My thumb has weakened over the years, and last year I noticed the squaring you mentioned. It doesn't hurt if I don't stress it. Just knowing what's happened to it is a relief. Thank you for the excellent explanation.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Best wishes. Stephen.
Because you’re a musician 😎
I'm a guitar player with thumb pain in my left hand. I found that coating my hand with cayenne pepper infused castor oil does wonders. Slather on the oil, wrap with gauze then plastic wrap and an elastic bandage before bed. I noticed a difference from day 1.
The most concise and truly helpful information I’ve found. Thank you.
You're very welcome! Im glad it was helpful.
Regular epsom soaks are very helpful! Also, the golden ratio of 1:1 thc and cbd products really helps when using my thumbs for outdoor chores on my 12 acre forested homestead. I also bought rubber door grips for commonly used doorknobs and knob style bathroom faucet controls.
chopping firewood and making kindling are slow chores around here!
I too have the thumb arthritis, & all these symptoms. The Delta 8 or thc-a helps with the finger pain a lot! Smoke the buds! 😎👍🏽
I love the 1:1!! Works so well on pain.
Stephen.

I'd put in for a refund!
You need to get tested for Inflammation. You are allergic or your body is fighting something. Milk allergy? Wheat Allergy? Some sort f food allergy? A detailed blood workup can maybe expose it
Thanks, straight to the point, no waffling.

Great that you got such a good surgical result !
So well explained. Thank you no long waffle…directly to an excellent video.

I just had surgery on my left thumb. Nice and cleaned up and hardly hurts. Can’t wait to do the other hand.
Great video. I hope people get some relief from the daily pain.
Good luck with it Faith. Its a good operation. Hope it work well for you.

I’m a quilter & my left thumb pain was cramping my style. I had surgery last year to remove the joint. Wore a cast for 6 weeks & had a couple months of therapy & I’m as good as new!
Good news. Great result ! 👍
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’m glad you found it helpful. Great news that you’ve already been doing the right things anyway !
I have this, and other areas affected by arthritis. I’m pain free now that I’ve switched to a mostly carnivore diet. If I eat bread or processed food, the chronic pain returns.
I'll try it, thanks 😊

I use a Push meta grip CMC brace. A little pricier than the others but it is smaller while still providing great support. It even fits under gardening gloves. I can do most of my usual activities wearing it.

It’s a good operation. Great that it worked so well for you. Good luck with the other one.
Years ago I read about interlocking the fingers of both hands & then rotating the thumbs fast. It oxygenates the joint really well. Gives enormous relief

Thank you.
You’re welcome. And thanks for the Frankincense oil tip 👍
My husband is awesome with
The care he gives me n he has an autoimmune disease; Systemic Scleraderma.
If you have constant pain go n see a hand specialist, mine was great.
I pray God touches each n every one of you who goes through this cause it is truly painful.
Touched by what all you have gone through... you are a tough lady who would not give up!
Yes we mustn’t underestimate the power of prayer in our lives. Every pain I get I touch the area with holy water and it goes away or lessens a lot. I’ve managed to keep at bay any interaction with health providers that way. I’m 75 and take no meds at all.
Thanks for sharing your story!
EXCELLENT. Describes exactly what I have and what the specialist I went to said. Don't know yet how it will turn out, but I learned more from this guy than from the doctor I saw.

As a retired Florist my hands have suffered over the years, I do use a brace the first one you showed. Thank you for your advice it was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
It probably was tendinitis. That’s the sort of thing that might respond to exercise of this nature. I’m glad it got better.
Thank you !@@PhysioMSK
I have this in both thumbs, and right wrist, where I also have a hard lump, when I went to the doctors she said it was wear and tear from being a secretary for years, and put on my notes PAIN IN THUMB. No help whatsoever, so this video has been very helpful. Thank you.
You’re very welcome. I hope you find something that helps. My latest video looks at the best thumb splints so do check that out too.
Keep fighting the good fight Melody !👍
Thanks. I’m glad you found it helpful. Good luck with the recovery.

Let’s hope so ! Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated 🙏
Stephen.
@@PhysioMSK Thank you. ❤️
Many thanks for this....I really do appreciate it and your calm way of explaining! 😊
Thanks very much for commenting Linda. I’m glad you found it helpful. Best wishes. Stephen.
Thank you for the information. It gave me a clear picture of my condition and at the sane time gave me the options for treatment. I will admit that my condition stems from the fact that I read too many ebooks and I use my affected thumb too much flipping the pages.
You’re very welcome. If you try using a splint while reading, it might help. In my experience they can work very well.
You’re very welcome. I’m glad it was helpful. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Much appreciated.
Great to hear those self help treatments working well for you.
Thanks for commenting Ian. Yes, if you can mange OK with slightly bent little fingers then its probably best left alone. All the best. Stephen.
almost 50 years as a cabinetmaker (still working at 72) and this just happened about 2 months ago. pretty tough to do woodworking without the use of the left thumb. It gets lots of exercise every day. Just bought a thumb splint and will see if I can work with it.
Good luck. I hope it settles down for you. Bug if not then go and see someone.
Good luck with it. Surgery for this condition is often helpful.
Best wishes. Stephen.
Very informative, thank you for sharing. Answered a lot of my questions.
You’re very welcome.
What diet changed did you do?
@@sbeasley7585 Eventually, I literally changed everything I ever thought I knew about food. But that came much later. My first First-Aid measure, so to speak, was to stop using a palette altogether; I put the paint on a porcelain plate on a small tableé next to my easel Have heard similar stories from other professional painters.
I thought this was a very well presented simple ,concise and well spoken video presentation , just the sort of thing that you would expect from a really good GP and or a specialist. thank you very much .....excellent
Thanks very much for the feedback Richard. Much appreciated. I’m glad you found it informative.
Best wishes.
Thanks for sharing. I’m glad you found something that helps.
It sounds like you had a CMC joint replacement. Great to hear it worked so well for you.
Thank you for the very good diagrams and advice on getting the right amount of movement and rest. Didn't get this sort of help from my doctor, but it has proven very productive. Thumbs up from Canada!!
Thanks for the kind comment Diane. I’m glad that you found it helpful.
Best wishes. Stephen.
Thank you for a very informative explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
I’m glad the pain has now gone. It often does when the arthritis is end stage. Best wishes. Stephen.
Thanks for your detailed description of the problem and what do do about it. When I was diagnosed, all I was told about my splint was to hand wash it. Since i still have intermittent pain, I'm going back to using it 24/7 for a while and then try your "weaning" procedure.
Yeh that’s a good plan Julie 👍
I have found compression gloves ( MaxiFlex gloves with the fingers cut short) help a lot. Get them a little tighter than normal. Helped me get through the last year before retiring.
Much cheaper than "arthritis" gloves. Type 34-874
Thanks for the recommendation 🙏👍
Just ordered some! Thanks!
@@mar83161 you're welcome.
Thank you for the best information video of my pain in my thumb!!!❤❤❤
I'm a gardener, who has a passion for pruning and taking cuttings.
I never had this thumb pain until a few months ago (aged 57). Can't imagine having to give up gardening, but I do have a tube of that Capsicain cream (I use that on my back occasionally. Got it from eBay years ago, probably before it became a prescription medication).
Don't like to keep bothering my doctor with my joint problems, but if this doesn't work I'll get a course of anti inflammatory tablets again. I had those for my feet and ankles one time because they don't flex too well any more and the tablets worked a treat.
Try using a small splint under your gardening gloves. That might really help. Links in the video description.
Clear and well explained. thank you.
You’re very welcome ☺️
I had bad pain in the pad at the base of my thumb for a couple years. Went on an elimination diet (Carnivore diet) and after just a few weeks the pain was gone. Stayed eating this way pretty much, and it has never returned. A number of other physical ailments resolved too.
I really appreciate your clear explanation and images! Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this info! Very happy to have found this video to help guide me to finding some relief.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for letting me know.
Had hyleuronic injections in both thumbs. One thumb has been pain free since the first injection. The second thumb is much less painful but regularly requires supplementary injections. Pain in 2sd thumb has been reduced by approximately 90%.
Im right handed but i believe that is whats going on with my left. Definitely talk with the Dr on my next visit.
Funnily enough, there doesn’t seem to be any relationship to the dominant hand. It can affect either thumb equally.
Yes it’s such a common problem. I hope you find something that helps. Best wishes. Stephen.
That was an excellent presentation. I treat these for many years but still learned alot. Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this I'm a gardener and it helps me so much
You are so welcome!
Thank you for the information. My doctor told me there wasn't much I can do but I will definitely try what you advised. So there is at least some hope on the horizon ...
Yes. Definitely some hope and if all else fails the surgery can be very good.
Best wishes. Stephen.
Very interesting and helpful thankyou. Will certainly try the advice
Stephen.
Great info…thanks. I had prp in my elbow 10 years ago and it fixed it. My do it for my thumb.
Not a great deal of evidence for PRP in OA but you might be a good responder 🤞
Thank you for the very good explanation. I suffered for years with this (and other joint pain) but it all stopped after discontinuing a certain blood pressure water pill. I take a different one now but it is a very low dose and I have no pain.
Are you sure it was this condition ? It might just have been a drug side effect. Great that is resolved though … whatever it was.
I used Turmeric with Ginger/pepper daily with GREAT results! Inflammation goes way down and the same time the throbbing pain subsides dramatically 2400-3000mg daily with something fatty like milk or sausage
I’m glad you’ve found something to help.
7:12 7:16, This looks like a livable, helpful device we can use to help our parents.
Thank you for that info. Very interesting and good to know.

Very helpful video & with the info you have given I will try these ideas to help & see how I get on with out taking any painkillers.
No problem Paula. I hope you find something which helps.
This advice is extremely helpful. Thank you so much!❤I'm going to get a splint. I already have a square joint at the bottom of my thumb.
You're very welcome. Hope you find some relief.
Excellent Thanks. I appreciate info. Have pain in both thumbs and thought my thumbs were going come out of my hand with the pain. I will try the exercise and check on the hand braces.
