I joined Slave as lead singer in 1982 ....When I landed in Dayton Ohio i walked off the plane and Roger was there! Slave, was NOWHERE in sight man. Why and how he happened to be there I will never know but I went up to him and of course i was just flummoxed. I introduced myself to him and he gave me a hug and wished me luck. Later we had a best band contest against Roger and Zapp.....They won! It was in Columbus Ohio. Losing Roger was like losing Prince and i will always be grateful for his guidance and his talents. He would always say to me"When you gon stop drinking that wine/Alcohol? Which really is the reason that my career was a failure. Well now i have over 15 years with no relapse through Prayer...... I'm from Dayton, Ohio and my very first concert was Zapp and Roger featuring Shirley Murdock in 1990 at the Dayton Convention Center. I was 12 years old. I still remember that concert! Amazing times❤
Yeah! This still cuts right through my heart to this very day. All we have left is the memories and the music. I love the Sugarfoot album Roger produced for him!
I met him in the mid 90s. I was a Night Manager at Echo Sounds Recording Studios in Los Feliz near Hollywood in Los Angeles. When we shook hands he said, “It’s a pleasure to meet you” and I replied, “It’s an honor to meet you”. He was killed two weeks later. A one of a kind musician, he will be remembered for having his own style and a unique voice.
Nice little story man! He was a complete gentleman......Clean and unbelievably talented. He produced Sugarfoots album that is a work of art. He had an incredible live show too! he encouraged others to stay off of alcohol and drugs a great inspiration in many ways!
@@waynefoote3781 Thank you. Meeting him was truly an honor for me. I had listened to his music since I was a kid so even shaking his hand was awesome. I was sitting at my desk in the studio office one day, watching the television in there. All of the sudden I saw on the news that he had been killed. Everyone in the studio just lost it because he was literally just there two weeks prior to that tragic event. Bro, I’m not even related to him but I was hurt. I had just shook his hand so his death really disappointed me. He was already an icon to me as a young musician and producer myself at the time. I will never forget his genuine humility.
I want to be your Man is the PERFECT Zapp song. I have all of their albums and no matter what generation that song is played on the radio, it will NEVER get old. Black folks have been through so much in life in the past and present any and everything they accomplish should be celebrated together and as a whole thank you Roger and the troutman family for the great creative music you produced and the inspiration other artist took from your music.
John Singleton as director is who I first thought of when the unsung video of Roger came out. All the comments and stories written to his surviving family( on UA-cam) were really nice reading. John Singleton had passed as well. Even though it was a tragic ending to Rogers career the story and legacy live on. A whole lot of people were uplifted by him and his family with their showmanship and stage presence. I never did get to his concerts but family family told me all about it. I'll be watching for sure.🤞
I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice... once in Oakland then again in west TX just weeks before his death. Still bump Zapp and Roger to this day!!!
I met Roger back in the 1990's concert in Salt Lake City, Utah but he had been here before back in 1981 and I missed his show, back then the name of the band was Roger and the Human Body, he came back twice in the 90s and I had never danced so much as I did those nights at both concerts, I cherish my photo of Roger and I shaking hands and the thrill of us together laughing, he was a very funny man and a great musician. Such a senseless killing. Roger was so influential & talented and, like George Clinton, was working steadily in the '90s with rap artists who grew up on his music. Seems like jealousy + mental illness on the brother's part.
Sad, tragic, and disturbing story. I grew up a serious fan and collector of the Troutman Brothers' work during the 1980s, and I was devastated upon hearing this when it occurred. May their brilliant work remain with us for eternity. Great work and documentary by the way.
