The way Rick guides Adam through the design process so efficiently, yet making sure Adam makes every decision, is so masterful. What an amazing creator.

Totally agree. Adam, who is normally so confident in everything he does, looked totally lost a majority of the time. That's not a bad thing on Adam, but actually shows how those guys are absolute masters of there craft. It's just a bonus that they also contribute to making millions of kids (both young and old), so happy when these puppets get to perform for them.
Yes! I have no doubt he could have confidently built his own puppet, but you could see him take a step back from the leadership role he typically takes with Norm in his shop.
Seeing those puppets move is so strangely organic and human. You know it's just a bunch of glued foam, fake fur and felt, but the movements and the design make them seem like actual living beings. This is why Yoda from the original Star Wars trilogy is a billion times more relatable and organic than the CGI Yoda from the prequels. And actors interacting with puppets can actually react to something in front of them, which is being driven by another human, while the puppet is basically just a representation of another actor. You can't interact with a CGI character because there's nothing there. The only time I really saw a movie perfect that synthesis was in LotR, where Andy Serkis actually played Gollum in a motion capturing suit and spoke the lines. All they did was replace him with Gollum, but the actor's interaction with the CGI Gollum was exactly like it would be with a real character.
CGI is a powerful tool that can create amazing things in the right contexts, but the technology is not at a point where actors and actresses can treat CGI elements and placeholders as real characters, like puppets. Even though Thanos in _Avengers: Infinity War_ and _Avengers:Endgame_ was really impressive and his interactions in each scene feel so lifelike, his CGI was an exception to the norm. The way Mark Hamill would have interacted with a stand-in prop for a CGI Yoda would probably have felt less tangible compared to how he interacted with a physical Yoda puppet. Plus, we have the example of Baby Yoda - I doubt a CGI stand-in would have been able to capture people the way a cute, small, and organically moving puppet did.
I love how the people in the workshop sort of just jump into helping the puppets move without any prompting. Like they automatically bring parts of the puppets to life. It's so interesting to watch both the bts of puppet movements and having the focus on the puppets at the same time. Truly wonderful to watch. Thanks tested!
I'm completely surprised at how easily my own brain is tricked into seeing the puppet as an actual creature, even when it is only partially complete and so obviously being controlled by somebody.
one can just tell that these guys really love puppets, from how they gently stroke their heads, looking at unfinished body parts as if it's a newborn. so heartwarming.
This was the best 36 mins I have spent on YT in very long while..... they are INDEED Master craftsmen of the Puppet Making Art form..... Love this!! I really love that they use "what's on hand" not some super crazy power-tooled build shop. Gives us DIY crafters hope that we can pull off something magical!
OK there's no way this gets seen but... 29:15. If you made them longer intentionally, bore a hole into the centre of the foam and insert a metal rod with a couple of finger slings on the end that protrude back into the inside of the skull... you could have rigged a wire catch that tilts each eye a certain amount in a certain direction and had a cool alien-like movement (in/out, both in/both out, one in/one out etc) from the eye stalks.
Elmo has a mechanism that gives that effect when scaled up! His eyes are on dowels you can move up and down. The current puppeteer uses that feature alot
Certainly possible, but probably left out due to time. Rick said this puppet was built in eight hours, whereas his Avenue Q puppets take 120 man-hours to build each.
3:33 oh hey it's Oobi! That was a show on Noggin that had its main character essentially looking identical to this, and a few other similarly constructed characters.
