- Adam Savage visits the Museum of the Moving Image, which recently opened a landmark exhibition showcasing the works of Jim Henson. From the Muppet Show to Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock to the Dark Crystal, we get up close with many of the puppets, props, and film artifacts from Henson's world-changing career.
Thanks to the staff at the Museum of the Moving Image for guiding us through this exhibition.

I love the lady's explanation about how it fitted Jim's hand. It explains how Kermit was always such a profoundly expressive puppet. Would also love to see a similar video about the Dark Crystal.

One of the key things that Muppets did differently from other puppets and especially marionettes was that they actually *treated* the felt construction as malleable, rather than just pretending it was a hinge- so rather than just flapping kermit's mouth open and shut, for instance, he would actually scrunch up his hand to convey disgust, letting the creasing of the fabric and whatnot do all of the acting for him
It’s crazy, Dave still plays Gonzo to this day. And he’s in his 70’s. Good job!
No wonder he's one of the few muppets who haven't changed! I'm so glad.
With all the other original Muppet performers either passing away or leaving the company, Goelz is really the last of the old guard. It's kind of awe-inspiring in a way.

On top of all the things mentioned about how impressive Caroll Spinney’s Big Bird performance was, it should also be noted that his monitor wasn’t a POV, it was a feed from a stage camera so he was watching himself and judging his movements off of that.

I was named after Kira, from "The Dark Crystal " and his films and shows, were a huge part in my creative growth, and musical inspiration. Jim Henson is responisible for shaping and fueling millions of children's imaginations. Thank you Jim!

My very first drawing as a toddler was of Ernie and it shocked my mom, because she could tell who it was. I grew up in the 80s and early 90s so I was all about sesame street and the muppets . I even remember watching the muppet babies on Saturday mornings! As a mom now it's been delightful sharing Jim Henson with my kids .
This makes my heart super happy! Which is exactly what I needed after watching Big Bird sing at Jim Henson's funeral due to a UA-cam algorithm. I was totally crying my eyes out but then this popped up and I feel much better. I need to check this place out. The magic of Jim Henson is strong and I can't wait to experience it in person. "Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers and me!"

Oh my goodness they molded Frank Oz's hands for the Swedish Chef! That is just awesome. The whole exhibit looks amazing and it's wonderful to see it through Adam's eyes with his joy and excitement.
Makes it so much more personal.
Physical puppets are so much more tangible on screen vs digital animations. My kids, being used to digital characters are so mesmerized by puppets. I wish there was more puppet movies again like dark crystal and labyrinth.
I feel Walt Disney and Jim Henson are the two people that impacted most people’s lives forever and have legacies that’ll last for many years to come.
And now the Walt Disney Company is stomping all over their legacy.

Fun fact...For The Dark Crystal they used make up artist Dick Smith left hand for reference when they were sculpting the Skeksies hands. This was due to the fact that Dick had lost his left ring finger in an accident and had to have the entire bone removed all the way up to his wrist, this resulted in him only having three fingers and a thumb just like the Skeksies.
Wow! Never knew that, nor that hand bones were ever amputated like that - thanks. I wonder whether Dick's accident was work-related, and I wonder how much trouble the missing finger gave him when doing makeup.

Mr. Henson and his team: innovators, inventors educators and entertainers. They enriched our childhoods!
this is a prime example of why I enjoy Adam savage's videos. he's so excited to be learning and hearing about something that he and another person have a common interest in, the passion and excitement from everyone involved shines through in videos like this and just show the love that creators have for their productions. just like what Jim did with his own productions, which seems very fitting
Jim Henson's death is one of the saddest moment of my childhood. I remember parts of his memorial service. And how the Muppet Show addressed Jim's passing is something that is often rare, even in today's shows. Hearing Fozzie Bear reading the fan mail, and after a few letters he and the rest of the caste come to realize that Jim had passed away. Fozzie wanted to stop the show, but Robin tries to convince to continue the show. Kermit who had been out of all of the episode appeared (now puppeteer by Jim's understudy Steve Whitmire) came in told them how nice the song was, and if they had something silly to end on. And for the show to continue 'cause that's the way Jim wanted it.

I remember how they officially he died like yesterday. I was recording and going to watch... "Sing, sesame street remembers Joe Raposo".even though I was a collage student. Before the show starts an a black screen those words. "We regret to inform you..." I shock I read those words and ran from the room crying. I had found out my first hero was dying( my father) and to lose Jim a hero and the creator of my first love (kermit).
Can we turn this into Night at the Museum?!

Geeksmithing yeah, that and this is a really important "thing" for anyone in the creative industry, Jim Henson is a Legend and anyone should feel honored and in amazement walking through this exhibition. Truly amazing seeing what those people did.
Definitely the best part about watching Adam's tours. I really feel like he is genuinely amazed and interested in everything.
I'd like to see his reaction to classical art, a visit to a famous collection.

Thank you for sharing. My grandfather was a professional photographer and took professional black and white portfolio head shots of a few of the puppets, including of course, Kermit. I think this was back in the late 70's or early 80's. I remember him telling me how much fun he had working on the project and how surprised he was at the puppet construction.

It's sad, but the best example of the two sets of people Jim created was at his memorial service, especially when the performers and muppets sing his favorite songs. On stage, there are about 15 humans, and 40 people. It's amazing.

I really miss the competitive show, "Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge" that was on SyFy Channel a few years ago. It was one of the highest rated shows they had, but when SyFy wanted to renew it, they only offered something like 1/4 of the price they paid for the first season.
That show was great. I ended up making a 12 foot long dinosaur complete with animatronics.
I loved that show, too! I forget about it until I read this comment XD
That show was amazing. I was completely blown away at all the work they put into bringing the characters to life and all the different skills and knowledge they had to have to create them: Costume making, engineering, electronics, etc and puppeteering! I'm a big fan of Face Off where they create characters mainly involving sculpting masks and doing makeups but this is a whole other level. I was so disappointing there weren't more seasons.
I so desperately wanted more. I would pay to watch a second season.

1976, I was 6 yrs old. I loved the Muppet Show. It's sad to see these iconic Muppets that were a main part of my childhood no longer in operation.

Everything is cool,but the fact that Jim Hensons crew brought the Ninja Turtles to the big screen and for that I am forever grateful.
I'm in tears! Between the memories, seeing how these wonderful characters were operated, Adam's excitement... I am bawling my eyes out!

jeommy kin Thanks! I was in the hospital a lot when I was little and between Kermit & the Muppets and Reading Rainbow.. it got me through a lot of boring days/months! Plus Kermit reminds me of my dad! 😄😄😄 I kinda owed it to Jim Henson to help in any little way I could!

If Jim Henson could have lived into the age of CGI, I think we would've had a better merger of puppetry and CGI, but without Jim, CGI has run rampant.
I think his son did a great blend the two in Happy Time Murders.
As much as the CGI muppet Waldo sucked, the idea of real-time puppeteering of a CG character with your HANDS was both ahead of its time and sorely underutilized today. There's a lot of mocap, sure, but there's very little mocap-puppetry actually working facial features or other things with people's hands.
If Jim has lasted longer, Mirrormask might have been a masterpiece of blending CGI and puppetry instead of being an over the top CGI mess.
Curiously, in 1999 the movie The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland was released. which contained elements with muppets and CGI effects.
The Thing 2011 would have been 10x better. That CGI was atrocious.
Adam, would just like to say thank you for this video. I know that at my age(70) I could never get to see such an exhibition because I live in UK, to see this knowing you grew up with it and I remember it very fondly and Fraggle rock and my wife loved the Muppet film of Christmas carol. Totally brilliant work done by Jim and Frank to keep us entertained.

I wish they had focused a bit on the characters Jim made for Fraggle Rock, namely Cantus and Travelin' Matt Fraggle. Heck, they should do a revisit of the whole series and characters.

Yet another video that captivates and just pulls the viewer right into Adam's journey and mind. Watching Adam, hearing the enthusiasm and the vast knowledge he offers has made fans like myself fall in love with everything he does.
I mean he's knowledgeable but he didn't know Kermit got started in the 50s....I thought it was common knowledge. He was on Sam and friends and he lip synched songs and wore a wig sometimes...and got eaten by a shaggy looking monster. Fun fact, Kermit was first made out of Jim's mom's coat. Also I don't think he was green til Jim decided he was gonna be a frog. He may've been blue.

Back in the 80s there was a program for the Mac (an ‘INIT’ if you know what that was) that would hack the Finder so that whenever you dragged a file to the trash can, Oscar would pop up and sing “I love trash!”... fun times... 😜
YES! I was a student aide and ran the Mac lab in high school, and installed that on every computer we had. Didn't tell anyone about it. The next day after a few kids discovered it, the news ran like wildfire and soon everyone in the school was talking about it. A couple of Special Ed. kids spend their whole hour in the lab just creating folders and deleting them just to see Oscar. That's all you could hear coming out of the lab for the next few weeks... "Oh, I love traaaash!"
My moms computer said "hello clarice" when it booted up and when she shut it down cartman would say "screw you guys, im going home." Good times.

Thanks, man! I've always loved the Muppets since I was a kid. I went to that Jim Henson exhibit in Albuquerque anyway. And may I add that The Muppet Show has always been my favorite TV show for as long as I can remember.
Just got done watching Defunctland’s series on Jim Henson, it is amazing to see what he did for the entertainment industry.
I love how genuinely excited Adam is about seeing these things. Exactly how any true fan/geek would be.
I've said this before, but it's high time Adam builds himself a legit BigBird costume for Adam Incognito.
I loved everything Henson put out. I never missed a Fraggle episode and actually bought the DVD set last year. I saw The Dark Crystal in the theatre and it was the most awesome thing I saw. and to this day I still watch Labyrinth at least once a year. I think I have three copies of it on DVD.
Edit: I forgot to mention that my brother couldn't watch The Dark Crystal because the Skeksis scarred the crap out of him.

I was misty-eyed for the first 20 minutes but then I lost it when they showed Sarah's and Jareth's costumes. Although I do wish they had Sarah's princess ball gown instead.

There is also a small museum in Leland, MS where he grew up as a child. It is very interesting as well. Jim Henson has always fascinated me. I'm still amazed at the art and skill to make an object truly come to life.
The deaths of Henson and Mercury hit me hard when I was young. Henson still inspires me so so much. Thank you for this Adam and crew. I love geeking out on all your videos but this one really got to my heart.

I wish there was a little more on the original Ninja Turtles animatronics. Didn't Jim himself say those were the most advanced rigs he ever designed?
Yep and they all were mostly destroyed in one of the backlot floods in Florida as I recall so you won't be seeing any of those puppets.
Plus some parts of the animatronics were sold online. The show "Totally Obsessed" has a woman who bought two animatronic heads of Leonardo and Michelangelo.

@@queenmedesa Well, my curious UA-camr, Animal Jam is a television show produced by the Jim Henson Company in 2003. The show is a wild, music-driven, live-action dance show designed to be "interactive," and encourages viewers to get up and dance along with the characters. The show is hosted by Muppet characters Edi and Waffle.
The show premiered on the TLC Network on February 24, 2003, and then moved to the Discovery Kids channel on March 3rd of the same year. Thirty episodes were produced, and several have been released on DVD. The show also aired on Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Australia.
Format
Animal Jam uses real-life kids and puppet characters to teach movement and physical skills. Animal Jam hosts, Edi and Waffle, speak directly to the viewers at home and gets them physical active. The episodes consist of several physical themes including walking, flexibility, personal space, balance, jumping, marching, and physical expression. Each episodes has original songs followed by real animal footage that inspire dances and recurring games songs that viewers must follow along with.
Thanks for going to events like this Adam. I can't picture anything this cool happening near me that I could see.

Adam is the exact right person to properly showcase this exhibit, because his clear LOVE of the muppets, the technical understanding to appreciate the hard work of it all, his experience makes it so that you can really see it through a new perspective
Although I haven't watched a whole ton of these shows, seeing the exhibit being explained and toured in such an enthusiastic and joyful manner is incredibly interesting and amazing, and seeing Adam getting so enthusiastic and giddy with excitement is truly amazing and so interesting to see!

I've never watched the muppets or sesame street... but I have watched this 3 times now! Adam's excited energy is so infectious, he truly looks like his childhood dreams are coming true!

I'm kinda glad to see a lot of Jim's work is on display in an exhibit like this one. Cause Jim work with many different people in Hollywood mainly in the 70's and 80's even with his own company. Plus a lot of what Jim did was very helpful for Hollywood even with the animatronic puppets.

I grew up with Jim Henson tv shows and movies and I'm so grateful to my mother for introducing me to it. Muppets, Fraggle Rock, The Storyteller, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and then later on as a young adult Farscape. So many awesome creature designs and so much creativity and passion went in to each of these projects, and you can tell. The puppeteers, the actors and everyone involved in the production, the Henson family etc, all deserve a lifetime achievement award for their contribution to tv and cinema
