Honestly, I've been a fan of Devin since 2004 but this one the best song he's ever composed. It's the ultimate culmination of everything that's Devin. I'd be sad if this was the first album to hear. YOU HAVE TO DESERVE THAT ALBUM! ♥️ And then there's the rest of the album which is sadly merely super stellar. 😁

I couldn't agree more. For someone new to Devin, telling them he wrote a musical on the same album that contains a song like "Hear Me", they'd probably be all, "Who the fuck is this clown?". But to me. I had zero hesitation or worry about Devins ability to pull it off. He's the only artist on this planet that could release an album like Empath, with such varied styles on it, and not only satisfy his diehard fans, but make it work in such a way that you could basically sneak it into ANY Disney movie and it would work without anyone batting an eyelash. Well, until you get to the "Let me go home" part. 🤟🏻😂 Devin Townsend is my personal lord and savior. #DevinIsGawd

I couldn't agree more. But that's true of alot of Devins music. He's managed to write many unique and one of a kind pieces of music. It's why I love him so much. It's why his fans are so devoted to him.

This Genisis video was my first ever experience of Devin Townsend and totally blowed me away. Right after this I systematically listened to every other track he made (and that's a lot), and have been a great fan ever since. Devin is truly a musical genius and I think most of his work is amazing! "Why" is, as someone also mentioned, one of my favorite along with "Genesis".

The octopus is one of Devin's favorite animals. There is a lyric in 'Sprite' on this record, "octopus lovers are broken-hearted," which he had said was meant to refer to himself

I spent a long time never having a favorite band or musician, because there's just SO MUCH good music out there. However, over the last year or so, Devin has easily risen to fill that void. No other musician comes close to touching him.

SO GLAD YOU 2 ARE DOING THIS SONG! It's the perfect blend of everything Devy has done over the last 25+ years.
Devin just ended his recent tour with his new band line up last week in Europe that started this past November into December with HAKEN and THE CONTORTIONIST and it was called "EMPATH VOL.1" (even though he jokingly says it should be called VOLUME 2 because he also did a tour earlier this year before he did his EMPATH tour where it was just him and an acoustic guitar and it was obviously amazing)
He hasn't done any material from Strapping Young Lad yet but he said he plans on doing it next year when he commences VOL. 2 (vol. 3 lol) and I CAN'T WAIT!!!
By the way, it's so cool how you 2 had the video in the background catching your reaction like Dev did in the original video LOL!

Love you guys, on empathy - I used to have a dopamine imbalance issue, and I couldn't be sad. I lacked empathy. I got better. Now I have developed empathy. I am a much better person now. to myself and to others. Things hurt more. But I know what it means to hurt others now. such a big change. 100% agree with your comments.
On Devy's music as a whole - I have a (release) chronological playlist - which is 26hrs long. You can absolutely feel his journey, and the common threads throughout all the projects. as he's grown, and he's matured, as new technology/means has allowed him to more completely deliver the vision. Is magic. Much love to you.

  • @Yufri
    @Yufri 4 роки тому +16

Hi guys. I‘m glad you’re finally doing some Empath. This album to me is not only his best effort but also one of my top 5 albums of all times. Genesis is meant to be some kind of overture to the album, where he forshadows things to come. Combining all the styles and sounds that follow throughout the album. It is a lot to take in at first, but after several listens you will get the „architecture“ of the song, and despite all the changes is really works as a song itself. I saw him live a few weeks ago and this song closed the main set and went down like hurricane with the crowd. Absolutely epic and awesome.
You should definately do this album in full, because it is like an epic movie you have to watch again and again.

I love this song and the video for it. It is a tornado of music. He used 3 different drummers on this one song. The message is good, and the themes you hear on this song play out through the whole Empath album. I hope you react to more songs from it if you haven't heard them already! Spirits Will Collide, Why and Evermore. And if you want Strapping, check out Hear Me. Dude from Nickelback sings on the chorus (along with Anneke)

Genesis was kind of meant to be an overture to the rest of the album- kind of like when you watch an old musical and before the movie starts a big instrumental medley of all the songs in it plays beforehand. If you want to know what the rest of the album sounds like, Genesis is a great preview, but that's why it is so amazingly bizarre as a stand alone song.
In response to what Wolf said about similarities in his music, there are actually a couple albums of Devin's where he flips the script and departs from his "normal" sound almost entirely. "Ghost" and "Casualties of Cool" are straight up ambient Americana and "The Hummer" is a completely instrumental electronic thing. Its one of the reasons I love listening to him so much, he has music to fit every mood and he's amazing at all of it.
Please listen to Death of Music live at Royal Albert!

Genesis has become my favourite Devin song, or songs; because it really is a collective of musical themes and emotions.
I also really appreciate your thoughts on suicide, and the beauty of "how they meet their maker is their right while they're alive". That's an aspect of the song I'd not considered or interpreted until now. And a huge thumbs up for Duncan Trussel! Do you have a link/reference for where the clip at the end originated from?

Suicide is a tough one to understand if you haven't experienced those types of emotions before.
I tried taking my own life a number of times in my teens because almost every day was filled with violence and abuse. I've had 3 suicides in my immediate family and we have a history of mental illness. when depression comes on, its not a choice, nor am i choosing to think negatively out of stubbornness.
The general theme of Empath is anti suicide. songs like "spirits will collide" perfectly illustrate the intent behind the song. It was actually discovering Devin's stuff 17 years ago that helped pull me out of that dark headspace. the lyrics of SYL really felt like a parallel of my inner mind and it helped me work things out in a non destructive format. now i am a musician and write my own music. sometimes the best thing to do with destructive energy is to tunnel it into creativity. the more people who can relate to the art, the less they feel alone :)

essentially Genesis is supposed to act as an overture to the entire album while also trying to represent the entirety of existence in musical form as the wall of sound, it's a theme he explores and expands on in all the subsequent songs, culminating in Singularity.
This song is definitely more along the lines of TOOL in the sense that you have to listen to it and absorb it and let it percolate in your brain over a couple listens, as you listen to it a few more times your ears and brain will begin to get the rhythm to the song down and be able to listen to it without feeling overwhelmed
I remember hearing this at midnight when it released and having much the same reaction of Sistah just being taken aback and needing to process everything I had just absorbed from the song... I look forward to and really hope you guys check out the rest of the album and do reactions because it is such a beautifully done album conceptually and lyrically.

The lady definitely seems to have had a preconception going into it about what the music would be. At first it seems like ye lady were wondering if something was gonna come scare you. But nothing did. More like pleasantly surprised right? I'm guessing... Anyways, cheers yall!

Omg finally someone understands! It's an endless battle. God, anyone who says giving up is the easy way has never tried. There is no more difficult thing to do. Don't worry about me though. Ive made it through for the most part. But it means such a great deal to hear someone understanding. Thank you. Sometimes you dont want to face the fact that it will never be any easier. We will always have to struggle, every day. Life is balance my friends every euphoric moment you experienced will have a negative parallel. The good moments pass and are taken for granted. We never think of what mind of hell we will have to endure as payment eventually. God for this reason I hope I never do have a perfect day.

He has performed SYL material in recent times, before Covid hit. He was planning on doing a lot of SYL material with having Krimh as his touring drummer. luckily I got to see Devin when Accelerated Evolution came out at ProgPower. I also got to see SYL on the Alien tour with Soilwork, Fear Factory, and Darkane...talk about the best tour ever! Also got to see Nightwish with Tarja at ProgPower, but need to see them with Floor(prefer Floor with After Forever myself though).

The album is awesome, this song is all over the place, but for a reason. Devin explains in this video: ua-cam.com/video/VRRfMJn3Wno/v-deo.html You have to check out Spirits Will Collide and Evermore too. Stormbending from the previous album is great too and very uplifting. Cheers!

Hello, I just started watching your channel and I was really taken in with what you are all doing. It makes me , as an old timer, see younger folks with open minds when it comes to music. I really appreciate that. How can I put forward a couple of songs that I think you would like. I’ve looked thru your post and I have not seen these particular songs. I know this is not where I should contact you, so please let me know where, if you can. Thank you.

Thanks for calling us "younger" lol 😆 best way is to through Patreon or donation support. You'll find the links in the description. Free options can be done through joining her Twitch stream or just putting it here. We occasionally pick random suggestions to add to her Reaction Roulette series. Works like a lottery. Thanks again for liking what we do 🤗

It's all seriousness during the intro... then the video madness starts... o.O
Maybe it;s me, but Wolf sported a smile from almost the start to the end, also were you crying?
tbh, I already saw the video as soon as it was uploaded month ago...

Such an epic song. One of my favourites from him. If I could listen to only one Devin song ever again, it'd have to be this one.
For a deeply moving song to react to, you should do 'Refuge' by Steven Wilson, unofficial video:
