I grew up bouncing between so many genres and just not having a favorite artist. Im 29 now, but about 5 years ago I learned of Devin Townsend. The moral of the story is I'm on a 5 year bender with this man and literally no other artist scratches this itch.
Let there be hype. The new army of Hevy Devy fans are way too hype-happy. Declaring an album "greatest of the year" before even hearing one song is definitely teenie-bopper territory, it's alien to me. Hopefully, a lot of these fanboys are teens, which would be understandable, but I know that's not always the case. The song has some good sections but overall it's just an intro, as DT explained, doesn't really work as a proper song, a proper piece of music.
@Mike Cranston The song's boring. The chorus, if that's how we can call it, is corny. The rest of the album needs to be better than this cluster-f**k of playful nonsense.
Tonight, when the soul keeps silent Say a prayer for the beloved end... Is only Heaven a game in vain? We pray for it all Your time lies in light divine, though the ‘never' stains the ivory... If joy remains, then the pain must stay Surrender it all... Receive this love... Receive this love... If you’re saying in your mind: “You're better off dead” Well, before the madness comes to claim your name: A million years would go by... (Tell us a story!) What could I say? What should I say? It took all of my words and my fantasy worlds and at the heart of it all, there was nothing! How they meet their maker is their right while they're alive It’s beautiful! Let there be light! Let there be moon! Let there be stars and let there be you! Let there be monsters, let there be pain! Let us begin to live again! From the top to the bottom: GENESIS! I, beyond the universe! I, beyond the mind! All the world is in this together Feel no fear, we're fearless forever! So why can't we just sail away? Because you're so in love with this island of the mind! (Know this here island is home.) You've got to get on your feet again (Genesis) Get on your feet again! But without your ‘self', what'll become of you? (Take your leave now, shut up, shut up...) Please don't take me from my youth... (Take your leave now, shut up, shut up...) When we’re apart, we fall! TOGETHER, WE FEED THE WORLD! So let there be light! Let there be moon! Let there be stars, and let there be you! Let there be monsters, let there be pain! Let us begin to feel again! From the top to the bottom: GENESIS!
This is the best shot we’ve had for ushering in a new age of peace and enlightenment for all humanity since Wyld Stallyns won the San Dimas Battle of the Bands in 1991.
I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a music video this much. This is utterly delightful! It has single handedly countered all the rage and sorrow induced by daylight saving time.
I got goosebumps as soon as I heard the drums start at 1:22, and had a massive smile on my face for the chorus. Not sure how I've gone this long without listening to Devin.
I think Devin should be allowed full creative control over all his projects from now on. He is genuine and a genius let him craft is own reality in music form and who knows my friend. The Heavy Metal Hall of Fame Awaits you :) All the best buddy and I hope to see you live soon, Jaz Hunter
twistandshoutabout He always had, but in practice didn't because his solo work wouldn't have fit the DTP style. I mean Empath has 3 different drummers and many other non-DTP people playing in studio that devin chose for the record, he didn't have that option with the project (well, he did but it wouldn't have felt right for him). Now that he disbanded DTP he gets to choose whoever he feels like that will bring in the vibe he wants.
I've been awake for 2 hours now and havw listened to this 5 times since getting up. I'm addicted, this song is resonating with everything inside me. My ADD my depression, everything. When I discovered Devin on YT 5 years ago I would've never thought that he'd be the one to make me feel this good again. My sincerest thanks to Devin Townsend and his Band.
So I watched this 4 times in a row, then I closed my eyes and listened to it, the came back and watched it a 5th time. Devin, if you’re reading this, I want you to know you’re my hero.
I love Devin, but don´t like the song because the chorus is maybe the lamest thing he has ever made. It sounds like an algorithm-generated kindergarten-song. It makes me cringe. The rest of the song is fine though it sounds like a collage from leftovers of all of his last bonus-discs. Very well produced. Really hope the rest of the album will be better. I´ve been a fan for 18 years, owning all of his albums.
You gotta hear it in the context of the whole album. Think of this piece as an introduction to the themes and motifs that’ll populate the rest of the music. It’s an overture. The whole album is wonderful and this is kind of a big ladle full of soup containing many things.
lol I just discovered this album and Devin Townsend in general a couple months ago, and I have already listened to this album front to back easily 30+ times, and just now learned that there are music videos for some of the songs. I love this because as goofy and playful as it is, it really does capture a lot of what I feel when listening to this song, as well as the album as a whole. Devin Townsend's work definitely seems to have a unique aesthetic, and also a sort of passion, vulnerability, and honesty that's pretty rare to find. I love everything about it, and man it gets me emotional.
congratulations on being the first person to put a disco funk break into a metal song successfully as well I might add, Devin I think you may be my hero!
Welp, my friend showed me this song last week and I have completely fallen down the Devinhole. My life was empty without Devin and I didn’t know. It’s as if Danny Elfman, Pavarotti and Zappa had a baby, AND NO ONE TOLD ME
So LET THERE BE LIIIIGHT! LET THERE BE MOON! LET THERE BE STAAARS, AND LET THERE BE YOU! LET THERE BE MONSTERS, LET THERE BE PAIN! LET US BEGIN TO FEEL AGAAAAIN!

Friend: What genre of music is it?
Me: **Nervously sweats**
All of them! :D
@@gardhul All is not enough for Devy!!!
Hinse why its called prog always progressing come on guys lol but he seriously got me with the kittens

Let there be light *watches smiling*
Let there be Moon *keeps smiling*
Let there be stars *woah, cool*
And let there be you *lost it*
Let there be... kittens.
I grew up bouncing between so many genres and just not having a favorite artist. Im 29 now, but about 5 years ago I learned of Devin Townsend. The moral of the story is I'm on a 5 year bender with this man and literally no other artist scratches this itch.
Let there be meta-reactions.
reaction-inceptions
Let there be hype. The new army of Hevy Devy fans are way too hype-happy. Declaring an album "greatest of the year" before even hearing one song is definitely teenie-bopper territory, it's alien to me. Hopefully, a lot of these fanboys are teens, which would be understandable, but I know that's not always the case.
The song has some good sections but overall it's just an intro, as DT explained, doesn't really work as a proper song, a proper piece of music.
Prog head reacts to his own music for the first time. Matrix glitch
@Mike Cranston The song's boring. The chorus, if that's how we can call it, is corny. The rest of the album needs to be better than this cluster-f**k of playful nonsense.
@Mike Cranston Yep, entire new DT album to enjoy, yet I keep coming back to this. Mr. Bungles first name must be Devin.
Don't forget to Buy the physical CD to support Devin!
Just did!
Andrew Clark my brotha!
If he rolls through my town, I'll buy a ticket and some merch. Good enough?
Still waiting on my vinyl :(
Done on day one!
Tonight, when the soul keeps silent
Say a prayer for the beloved end...
Is only Heaven a game in vain?
We pray for it all
Your time lies in light divine, though the ‘never' stains the ivory...
If joy remains, then the pain must stay
Surrender it all...
Receive this love...
Receive this love...
If you’re saying in your mind: “You're better off dead”
Well, before the madness comes to claim your name: A million years would go by...
(Tell us a story!)
What could I say? What should I say?
It took all of my words and my fantasy worlds and at the heart of it all, there was nothing!
How they meet their maker is their right while they're alive
It’s beautiful!
Let there be light!
Let there be moon!
Let there be stars and let there be you!
Let there be monsters, let there be pain!
Let us begin to live again!
From the top to the bottom: GENESIS!
I, beyond the universe!
I, beyond the mind!
All the world is in this together
Feel no fear, we're fearless forever!
So why can't we just sail away?
Because you're so in love with this island of the mind!
(Know this here island is home.)
You've got to get on your feet again (Genesis)
Get on your feet again!
But without your ‘self', what'll become of you?
(Take your leave now, shut up, shut up...)
Please don't take me from my youth...
(Take your leave now, shut up, shut up...)
When we’re apart, we fall!
TOGETHER, WE FEED THE WORLD!
So let there be light!
Let there be moon!
Let there be stars, and let there be you!
Let there be monsters, let there be pain!
Let us begin to feel again!
From the top to the bottom: GENESIS!
That's all~ That's all there is to it~
Thank you!!
....G E N E S I S!
First time metal brought me tears of joy! Wow!
Devy, you're a genius!
Metal Zappa, to be Frank
I see what you did there
Martti heavy devy
I see wut you did there..
Well played Martti
Fucking spot on, man.
This is the best shot we’ve had for ushering in a new age of peace and enlightenment for all humanity since Wyld Stallyns won the San Dimas Battle of the Bands in 1991.
THIS is what I've been waiting for since Deconstruction. Truly exceeded all expectations.
Exactly my thought! Been waiting for a new song that harmonizes with the chaos in my brain since, and well boys, we have it! \m/
I’m not a fan of grand production and i originally wrote devin off for writing such uplifting music but i now realize ive been needing this
I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a music video this much. This is utterly delightful!
It has single handedly countered all the rage and sorrow induced by daylight saving time.
I got goosebumps as soon as I heard the drums start at 1:22, and had a massive smile on my face for the chorus. Not sure how I've gone this long without listening to Devin.
"What's your favorite music genre?"
Me: "Devin Townsend"
I think this says it all
word
Pretty much sums it up for me.
Facts
Agree 😀
In Europe and Japan, this song is called "Mega Drive"
😂😂😂 I see what you did there
That was clever
I don't get it, but it is probably quite an intelligent joke, so I want to know it :)
@@rstrela so the Sega "genesis" was called the "mega drive" in EU and JP
@@Infernoblade1010 Ah, thanks :))
3:09 oh shit, when he says "let there be you" it pops up a weird selfie Devin posted on twitter. Awesome.
haha didn't see that
Yep that made the whole video for me. I remember when he posted that picture haha
It was priceless xD
that selfie is the stuff of memes
I like the little smile of satisfaction right after he hears the word "Genesis" at the end of the first chorus.
I'd vote for Devin as King of Canada
Rush, but for metal oh hell yeah it's Devin
*of the world, our lives would be so much better 😇😉
you misspelled universe
Ya know.....that's not a bad idea actually.....hmmmm....
He already is.
This guy is like the Zappa of heavy music.
I kind of like this comparison. They both share a certain creative unhindered spirit and aren't worried about being bizarre.
There's a great actual connection. Dev started out singing for Steve Vai, who in turn got his start playing with Zappa.
I think Devin should be allowed full creative control over all his projects from now on. He is genuine and a genius let him craft is own reality in music form and who knows my friend. The Heavy Metal Hall of Fame Awaits you :) All the best buddy and I hope to see you live soon, Jaz Hunter
Jaz Hunter I would have thought he has always had full creative control.
That's the reason he has disbanded DTP. More creative freedom and less pressure from professional side of things
twistandshoutabout He always had, but in practice didn't because his solo work wouldn't have fit the DTP style.
@@Stagnating_ so he basically went full Steven Wilson. I like it
@@vini.b.costa59 you never go full Steven Wilson.
My son showed you to me. About a month ago, You play so much different types of genres. It's fantastic. I really love your music.

Love you Daniel! The best vocalist in the game!
so happy seeing you here Dan, cheers!
You mean "Udderly" brilliant.
Was just listening to White Moth Black Butterfly, your voice is glorious!
This isn’t just music it’s a full experience. This is a song everyone should hear
This is a prime example of “less is not more... MORE is more”
That's what YJM been preaching!!😂
"Gimme more, more, more!" :D
Yes, and it kinda sucks. And the basis is still incredibly simplistic.
@@Yngsatchvai Yeah, but YJM is a dick.
I'm laughing and crying so I think I get it.
Same, what a genius!
Me too, i might be too sensitive but the part at the end gets me.

Same here!
I thought I was the only one!
I can proudly say I have listened to this song 23 times. My 9 and 7 year old daughters have listened to 12 of those!
An absolute masterpiece. Why this man doesnt get greater recognition defies all comprehension. Keep going mr townsend, you are a gift from above.
"let there be YOU" *all the chins*

So did I, man. So did I.

So I watched this 4 times in a row, then I closed my eyes and listened to it, the came back and watched it a 5th time. Devin, if you’re reading this, I want you to know you’re my hero.
I can't even imagine not liking this.
100 song ideas in one track. I wonder whether this music will gel after 10 listens, or whether it will still be a cluster-fuck of tunes.
@@lolliklauer Agreed about the cheese seeping into certain sections.
You gotta hear it in the context of the whole album. Think of this piece as an introduction to the themes and motifs that’ll populate the rest of the music. It’s an overture. The whole album is wonderful and this is kind of a big ladle full of soup containing many things.
@@MakeWeirdMusic wtfff so you already heard the whole thing? Lucky dudes.
lol I just discovered this album and Devin Townsend in general a couple months ago, and I have already listened to this album front to back easily 30+ times, and just now learned that there are music videos for some of the songs.
I like that he goes through all these emotions as any random listener would go with his own music
congratulations on being the first person to put a disco funk break into a metal song successfully as well I might add, Devin I think you may be my hero!
*Devin promoting Genesis: This bad boy can fit so much genres in it
Welp, my friend showed me this song last week and I have completely fallen down the Devinhole. My life was empty without Devin and I didn’t know. It’s as if Danny Elfman, Pavarotti and Zappa had a baby, AND NO ONE TOLD ME
no one ever discovers Devin soon enough ;)
Let there be light!
Let there be Moo!
I'm not sure what I just watched but it's probably the greatest music video in history.
This. Is. A. Masterpiece.
So LET THERE BE LIIIIGHT!
