    Alla prima comes from Italian and means “at the first attempt”. It’s also referred as the “premier coup” (in french) and as the direct approach. If you want an idea of what can be achieved with this approach, take artists like Velazquez for instance, Franz Halz, John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet is also a great example of what can be achieved with this approach...
    Basically the idea of the alla prima approach is to complete the entire painting in one layer, wet-on-wet. This painting process brings together only the most fundamental elements of painting : everything is generally very spontaneous and fluid. Painting wet-on-wet is all about workflow, to be honest, it’s more a mindset than an actual method.
    Most of the time, an alla prima painting is finished in one session, but this is not mandatory : this is why you can see examples of paintings with parts that are completed alla prima and parts that are painted indirectly, which means wet on dry.
    Alla prima refers to the spirit more than the technique. And there is actually a wide variety of techniques that can be used to complete an alla prima painting. Wet-on-wet paint handling is used when a more spontaneous and expressive look is desired. If it’s done well, it generally gives a better sense of movement and creates more expressive transitions. When painting wet-on wet, every brushstroke overlaps the previous one.
    This approach involves a greater emphasis on gesture and brushwork. It doesn’t rely on sophisticated techniques and mediums. It only uses the most fundamental elements of oil painting.
    Now the idea is very simple but you have to know that using this technique is more complicated than it looks. It requires to work fast and to have a lot of confidence in the brush handling. In fact, when people are just starting, I usually suggest to start painting indirectly, this way, they can take their time and make corrections with each new layer. If you make a mistake, as a beginner, it’s usually easier to just let it dry and paint over it... If you don’t know what to choose between direct or alla prima and indirect, you have to decide what’s more important in your painting : expressiveness or accuracy. If you want more expressiveness, then the alla prima is right for you, but if you want your painting to convey an accurate representation of reality, then you might want to choose indirect, wet on dry techniques.
    Painting alla prima requires a fast way of working, it’s not as simple at it looks. As anything, is requires technique and knowledge.

    I'm a Dutch artist living and working in South West France since 2006. I attended art school in Holland and hardly learned anything. Through the years I've learned to paint with oil paint and it's a never ending learning process. I'm so glad I've found your channel. In two hours watching your videos I've learned more than eight years of art school. Thanks a lot!

    I owe you a lot! I wanted to start oil painting again, but didn’t feel confident.
    Then I binge-watched your videos. I needed to be an artist again.
    I started charcoal sketches, then started live streaming when I drew them, then sold those works online...
    Now I can afford those oil paints to get started. All thanks to you bring generous enough to share your time, techiques and knowledge. Thank you so much.

    when you said 'knowledge has disappeared from the art world' my hair stood on end. So true. (I went to architecture school where I learned a fake form of drawing, year later I saw real art (in France) and slowly began to try and learn to draw the way the great painters did...always looking at old masters' drawings and methods and wondering how they studied...it's not enough just to keep trying and practicing: you need to understand what works and how and why. I'm so glad to find you: I've learned more from you than nearly any other artist or teacher out there today. Thanks so much.

    You make such great videos, thank you very much! You’re right: I’ve been at Art School, and I learned practically nothing about techniques, no knowledge. After art school, I disn’t enjoy painting anymore. After 15 years of touching no brushes, I found out that I was frustrated not being able to do what I wanted because of the lack of knowledge. Luckily people like you make it available and it helps a lot, I enjoy painting lije never before.👍🏻

    Bonjour Florent,
Merci. Merci beaucoup.

    After a few canvases I was unhappy because that wasn't the way I wanted to paint, I wanted to dedicate more time to each canvas, so then I found my style and my workflow, and now I love painting 😊
    Still, I thank Bob Ross videos because they got me started 🤗

I've only done a one truly alla prima painting, which I gave to a friend who loves it for the spontaneity it conveys. But it takes a LOT of forethought to get that! It did not compare to your work here. I'm subscribed!

    I feel like this video was made specifically for me. I’m having an all-out existential crisis over whether to paint alla prima or not. I want my work to have the fresh look of alla prima yet I’m not knowledgeable enough to pull it off yet. I think I will work indirectly for awhile, practicing the kinds of brushwork I want and layering where needed. Maybe I can work up to alla prima. Thank you! As another commentor said, it’s like you read my mind!

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  5 років тому +2

      I think that's exactly how you'll get there... You can have the "spirit" of the alla prima brushwork in an indirect painting. And you can also have alla prima paintings that are very tight and show no apparent brush marks. In the end, you'll just try different things and keep what works for you... and in no time, bam you've found a style that defines your personality !

    Thank you for an excellent video, Florent. I really like the way you created a sort of grisaille in the beginning. I would never have thought of doing that. One of the reasons I have always struggled with alla prima is that I have always just done a quick pencil sketch and then somehow lost the drawing underneath the colour. I also noticed how you were able to control the chroma of the orange fruit with the cool grey underpainting. Do you mix any medium at all with the paint?

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  5 років тому +2

      The challenge is to keep the chroma intact, because the blue underpainting is not dry. I talked about it in my video on brushwork ua-cam.com/video/fXopUOKVaHA/v-deo.html&t You have to control the quantity of paint on your brush, it's extremely important, otherwise the blue from underneath pollutes the orange. With the right consistency, it's thick enough to cover without being affected by it. If you need medium (which isn't necessary for alla prima) you want just a few drops. The thicker the better...

    Une question : une fois sèche, la peinture alla prima peut elle supporter des glacis (sur le kaki par exemple) ? Il me semble qu'on y gagnerait en transparence et donc en profondeur ?

  • @trojanette8345
    @trojanette8345 4 роки тому

    That's interesting that you would go to the trouble of an undercoat only to 'erase' some of it only to, paint right back in that same area!! Never seen anyone do their undercoating that way. Very unique technique. Can you discuss a little more why you prefer this method rather than leaving your undercoat -- AS -IS, then painting on top of that the, the way a lot of people do.
    What kind of surface are you using for your palette? What do you listen to when you paint?

    • @papercraftingwithmisstommi
      @papercraftingwithmisstommi 4 роки тому

      Trojanette83 a lot of alla prima portrait artists do it this way. It helps some with creating the right shading of the pictures they are working on. It’s just one of the methods of the wet on wet technique. I hope that helps.

    I’ve been doing layers so it ends up taking 3-4 days to see I have a proportion or two wrong! I
    I finished my 31 days in a row. Took two days off and I’m doing charcoal now.... jumping right in to painting might have been a little too much. I did improve since binge watching Florent. When I start painting again, and soon, I’m going to get those proportions down right before a drip of oil goes on. I’ve said this another way several times..... with the charcoal....which is so forgiving.....I’m going right in to blocking it then connecting hinges with out measuring because honestly that messes with my head....not a numbers person at all. I did a fair number of hours gestural drawing with willow 20 years ago. The blocking geometric shapes are what I put on fast in a gestural way. I never did those two before and they are really helping a lot......these charcoal portraits will get me doing what needs to be done to proportions ....finally...yeah....so there are to areas....one speed up and the other slow down..... need to step back more often. I’m also using more difficult poses with the charcoal....
    I used to just do wet on wet no medium....thhe results were pretty bad now I look back in just a few weeks of getting UA-cam lessons at a $10 a month patron level getting questions answered. January will be ordering the color theory ....9 hours and hopefully I can create some lesson art fro it? Or does it have exercises as a part of it? There’s nothing wrong with two color painting in my book ....I kinda like solemn moody stuff.... my favorite old time master artist is actually Odilion Redon. The man who paints a suggestion of a face only! The only thing I don’t like about his art! You mentioned Singer Seargent and Monet....I do like Singer Seargent portrait art. I’m not even sure about Monet and portraits....but I love his art a whole lot. I will see if he has portraits. I’m kinda leaning towards wet on wet for ME but I want to be able to do the other as well

    I went to school to learn about painting and creating art. What I learned was that art institutions produce degrees, not knowledgeable students. Some of the most basic things about painting were not even a consideration for the school. They taught theories, not techniques, and most of the teachers were annoyed that they had students on the college level who did not possess these basic skills of how to apply color, work with paint, prepare a surface... in the US, public school systems (intermediate schools and elementary level (high schools)) don't have the budget for oil paint, or canvases, or anything that is involved as fine art production on a professional level of instruction. For many students, their first exposure to oils is when they are forced to take an "introduction to media" class, or a "basic painting" class as part of the curriculum. They are hit head on with a very steep learning curve, and many of the basic principles are either skipped or omitted in light of what a teacher feels are necessary for the benefit of the class.

    Congratulations florent, I always follow your videos that are among my favorites.
    I'll ask you one question. In your opinion, among the many mediums existing in painting, which one is the best to paint "alla prima"?

    • @FlorentFargesarts
      @FlorentFargesarts  5 років тому +2

      The great thing about "alla prima" is that the medium is not extremely important. Paint straight out of the tube is perfectly fine. If it's too stiff for your taste, then a good choice would be poppyseed oil for slow drying time, prolonging the opening of the paint. But whatever medium (or no medium) works, really ! I would say, keep things simple.

    Hi Florent, can you tell me if you allowed your grisaille to dry first before your first color painting? (I couldn't tell from the video). Thanks.

      Not Florent but I'm pretty sure he did this in one sitting so the grisaille would still be wet

    I think you’re correct about no knowledge anymore in the art world, I think art schools are taught to progress in art so I think people are misinterpreting that as having no rules. It’s a purposeful no knowledge, I think people want an innocent primitive childlike feeling to their art. Just my theory as I love realistic painting

    What is the term for opposite of Alla prima?

      @ Sujanith I believe that the opposite of alla prima ( wet on wet) is referred to as "indirect"

    (j'ai un peu honte de mon commentaire d'une pauvreté extrême voir d'une ingratitude face à votre travail monumental en terme de vidéo, d'enseignement et de création mais ça m'a intrigué tout le long du time-lapse 😂)

    • @rduff1999
      @rduff1999 2 роки тому +1

      @ Rui Guan It is called a mahl stick and is used to support the painting hand and keep it from smearing the wet paint. Also great for painting straight lines by sliding the brush hand along the mahl stick.
