    After taking an unplanned hiatus, I'm back with an ancillary video to fill you in on what I've been up to. School started this week, so it took me a few days to finish editing this video. I also talk about some knitting projects I've finished as well as my favorite school and office supplies. What have you been doing this summer, and what are your favorite school/office supplies? Leave me a comment below -- I'd love to hear from you.

    Kudos to you for thinking of the struggles your students may face in affording books! We need more leaders like you in education. BRAVO. you are very thoughtful and that makes you super wonderful.

      That, (what KJ said) is exactly what I was going to say. Especially all the extra work you must do by changing books. I hope your students realize your thoughtfulness. It's been years since I taught and even more since I went to school, but that Mead tablet looks like a good knitting tablet; either for patterns, variations, or notes from podcasts. I would jot down at the bottom the other links or the pens to look into at some other time. Have a great new school year.

    That is so awesome of you for thinking about the financial cost to your students to help them get the grades that they need and deserve with the open-source textbooks. You really care about all of your students. What courses do you teach? My thing is post-it notes. I love those they really keep me organized in my life. All summer I have been getting back on track and learning new crocheting and knitting things. I am currently working on my very first amigurumi. I am making a doll for the first time in my life and I really love how she is coming out. The pattern is from The Proper Pineapple she has a UA-cam channel. She has been making this doll for a long time and she finally has written a pattern for it. I am in the home stretch with her by adding her hair.

    Thank you for making the effort to reduce costs for students. When I Got my BS in 1992 I paid cash for everything. Recently I went back to get an AS in nursing- now I have 10’s of thousands of dollars out in loans and only an associate degree to show for it. My anatomy books alone were over $500!!!! And then the school upgraded texts the next year so I couldn’t re-sell them. I wish more profs would do what you’re doing. Thank you!

    I learn so much from all your videos! You mentioned you are going to do a new video on stash/yarn bugs and I have a question about dust mites. I'm highly allergic to dust mites and launder everything I wear religiously to keep their numbers down, but I don't launder my hand knit wool items unless absolutely necessary. I've tried to research and came across conflicting information on dust mites and wool. I've heard wool is a fabric dust mites don't thrive on like they do on carpet and cottons and so it's safe for people with dust mite allergies, but I couldn't find any real science to back that up either. I'd really appreciate it if you could include some dust mite and wool info in your video on stash bugs. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and love of fiber! Your videos are an absolute treat for all us fans of fiber :-)

    I have an Erin Condren planner. I agree with you, Kristine. I like the planner but I do not like the spiral binding. I find it not only big, but it makes it hard for me to open the planner and turn pages. I love your blue sky desk calendar. I am going to order one!

    Hi Kelly, do you prefer comments here on UA-cam? I've looked at your rav discussion forum and your website, but they seem to be behind by a couple of years. Aside from that, I still LOVE those black gel pens you reviewed last year (?) or the year before. I'm getting into fountain pens again and have ordered some disposable ones to try out. Love your reviews--bought some of the square headbands for my sister and myself and they are really comfortable and well made. Thanks for the wide range of topics and products you come across and share with us!
    In addition, as a professor, myself, and seeing the recent figures on rapidly increasing student debtload, I'm very interested in what you find out about open-source textbooks. You've inspired me to explore what is available in my own field of technical communication and rhetoric.
    Thanks again for the very thoughtful and well-produced podcasts you release. I am so appreciative!

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  6 років тому

      Hi Loel -- great to hear from you! Yes, it's easier for me to see comments here on UA-cam (although I am sorely behind in responding). I just found I couldn't keep up with all the social media. I love fountain pens, too. I got one in Chicago a few months ago and it is amazing (but was SUPER expensive). Glad you are enjoying your SqHair Bands! I know, the student debt is yet another part of the equation. I can tell you my students are very appreciative of not having to buy a textbook. We'll see if it improves their motivation and final grades. I do think it's worthwhile to check into open source textbooks and see what's available in your field. I have not found books for every area of psychology, but there are usually several choices for the most popular classes (intro psych, social psych, cognitive, developmental), so it may be the same in your field. Let me know how it goes! Thank you so much for your friendship and support. 💙

    I have done paper planning for so many years... I am a traveler's notebook user. And then, this summer, for some reason, it all just ... stopped. And now I am 100% digital and loving it. I use Google Calendar, and an iPad with the Day One journal app for making notes, which I can cross index with each other, and tag for easy finding of information that I have saved. I also do extensive color coding on my calendar. I have so many pen sets and colors of ink and all of that, that I am just no longer using. I have my iPad with me at all times. And life just got a lot easier. Wow.

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  6 років тому

      That's great! I tried using a digital calendar several years ago and hated it. I guess it's just not for me, at least right now. I'm just an old-fashioned paper calendar kind of girl. 😊

    Nice to hear you are looking at open source books. Lots of work to change over from the current text book you are using. Thanks for looking out for your students. The one thing that puzzles me is why you are still using paper for your calendars. There are so many digital sources available and color coding as well as other notes is so easy. Since most people carry smart phones it just makes sense to do it digitally. Maybe next year changing to digital could be your project? Have fun at school.

    You know, you can get that planer re-bound. Take it to any stationery store, like Staples, and they will be able to take this coil out, and put in a smaller one.

    • @EweUniversity
      @EweUniversity  6 років тому

      Hi Pat -- I love your idea! I don't know why I didn't think of that, as I have had many books spiral bound at Staples. I'm going to try it, but not sure if it will work. I think the Erin Condren coil is proprietary in terms of measurement (so I don't think any coil will fit the holes). And there is not enough space on the left side of the pages to have the holes cut off and re-punched. But I'm going to check it out. Thanks for the tip! 💙

    Fascinating to hear everything you talked about. As an ESOL teacher I love pens and stationery and will check whether those pens are available in Europe. I like to write with a Pilot fountain pen for more formal things and a Pilot Gel roller ball pen for correcting. I applaud you for your Open Source textbooks initiative. Most of my students have great difficulty paying for the books they need each year.

    We went to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin a few years ago (about an hour south of La Crosse). The scenery was beautiful. The bluffs and rolling hills looked good to this Florida gal. As a retired English professor I applaud your switch to free textbooks. I love pens period! Sharpies are a favorite. Journals are a weakness of mine. I have one for daily to do lists, one for knitting notes, and one for books I have read or wish to read. Audiobooks let me knit or crochet and it's nice to have someone read to me for a change. ❤️

      Kristine Kelly sorry took couple of days, my swift just came in mail today, yeah. It is from Knit Picks, the birch one. Had to try out several surfaces to see where it will fit. Fifth one was a charm (small cabinet top just outside my kitchen). So I’m glad it is easy to assemble and portable. Someone suggested using my ironing board, so might try that. I also got the Knit Picks ball winder. There was a kit special. I now feel like I have a proper yarn shop and can cake up my wonderful expensive yarns.
