Ben More | Night Hike for Summit Sunrise above the clouds

- Ben More : Why Go Hill Walking at 2am ! ? Hopefully this video explains why I got up at 2am to go up a mountain for a hike. The temperature inversion allowed me to get above the clouds and enjoy perfect views across Scotland's Mountains
WATCH NEXT - More Cloud Inversion adventures here : • Cloud Inversions - ama...
Pitch black night hike, but it was for a reason. I wanted to reach the mountains summit as special conditions were forecast for sunrise. This mountain is one of the highest in the area so the alarm was set for 2am and off I went for a steep pull up the mountain in the darkness to see if I could get to the summit before sunrise.....

Why would anyone give this a thumbs down?! It’s magnificent.
Some cracking views mate and that trip was well worth the effort. Atb
Fantastic views! What an experience! All the best for 2021😁👍👍
Couldn't guess were you where until near the end , I thought you were in Blair Athol Carn Liath because of the steps ? The last time I was up Ben More was the summer 2019 and the guys had just started making the new steps , I take it they are long finished and now there is no steep boggy sections to walk through now ?
Fabulous! An experience like that must reconnect one with the universe on a primal level.
How about a “Scotland’s Mountains” photo calendar for next Christmas? Please... 👍
That’s a good idea - might think about that :)
Take care and thanks for watching

I think that would be a cracking idea.
Draw your Nm
calendar YES👍
One of my first Munros. Climbed it in June in the 1980s. In shorts. Half way up it started snowing. Never been so cold. I hate that hill - it's relentlessly steep but the views from it's summit are epic. Nice one again.
Those summit views made my heart jump
Another absolute stunner Murray. Literally looked like another world 😮😎👍. ATB - Dave
Thanks Dave - it was a rather fine morning on the mountain - well worth the early start :)

As someone else has commented - Wow !! Absolutely stunning - the views, the air clarity, the colours. You're right regarding what hill walkers dream of - a full 360 degree inversion. I've been fortunate to witness perhaps six in my lifetime so far - most of them in Scotland - and each one giving me one of the best days of my life. Utterly memorable at the time and unforgettable memories for the rest of my time on this awesome planet !! Thanks again for the excellent video !
Thanks Howard - yeah the inversion days when you get above the cloud certainly live long in the memory for sure :) One of natures best gifts to hill walkers in the hills and mountains :)

Absolutely stunning, Murray. I think the answer to the question why? has been answered by this video. Beautifully shot. Thank you.
Another fantastic video. Absolutely spectacular. Hope you've had a great Christmas!

Breathtaking, not much else to say other than thanks for showing us something that so few will ever see.
Wow, just wow. 2am's are worth getting up for. Another great inversion, I really don't think you can get much better than this. You've given us some blinding vlogs during 2020 Murray. Thank you so much, Happy New Year and here's to 2021 and another year of your fantastic vlogs. As always, stay safe
Hi Murray, wow everything came together on that morning. Really hard to top conditions like that and perfect timing. I am sure i can call this vlog a late christmas present! ATB Det
Thanks Det - certainly the mountain conditions we all dream of:)

Definatley well paid for your efforts cracking vid....best wishes for 2021 we ALL need it .....
Another fantastic inversion Murray. Absolutely belting sunrise. Cracking stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Absolutely fantastic work Murray, very jealous.
Love it when you get an inversion, once of the best feelings on the hills. You got a Brocken Spectre at 15:30 and a bit of a Fog Bow at 16:20.
It certainly is John - the fog bow came and went (too fast) by the time I had placed the camera what was a stonking fogbow had blown away with just the remnants left!! same thing happened up in Glenshee last month!! :(

@@ScotlandsMountains I've been lucky and had 3 Fog Bows, one on Ben A'an (where else), one on Ben Venue and one recently on the Kilpatrick Hills. They only last minutes, so you've got to be quick. Most have never seen them. Have a good New Year.
Well spotted 👍
hi love you videos murray i remenber doing my wainwrights and walking up on the summit of scarfell pike about 2.30am walking and reading my map at the same time with head torch off course and fell over this bloke in a bivvy bag (not the best reading a map and walking at the same time) did not know thay were that many f words but hope when this lock down is over can get back to my lovely scotland i am 64 now nr65 but still love my wild camping with motorcycle i am base in north west england can you tell me please what forcast you use i use mwis but is there any better thanks keep the vidoes coming

It's on a bright cold Essex day , been for a walk along the seafront at Holland on sea.
Again Murray , watching this by the fire with a cuppa in my hand - what a video 👍👍
I'd love to be up there, thst inversion is stunning - cold but stunning.
Until covid is gone ,please please keep going 😊😊👍
Thank you 🍻
Absolutely fantastic!!! Thanks for making the climb, doing the video edits, and sharing!
Another belter Murray. Hope you and the family had a nice Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Looking forward to your exploits in 2021.
Awesome film Murray. Ive been up there but only on a very nasty day! Loved the night approach. Another great adventure. Im in lockdown trying very hard not to drive up to the lakes and do a wild camp! ..... thanks again for an armchair adventure
Absolutely stunning Murray, brought a year to my eye. Just beautiful 🥰
I hope you didn't get too much grief from the wife. She must be very supportive of your passion.
Amazing👍
Hi Murray absolutely love the video graphics. Have recently purchased the mavic 2 pro drone to hopefully help me on my UA-cam channel im hoping to start soon. Just like your self only interested in doing it for me but hopefully encouraging future enthusiasts. Do you have any tips for a newby? ATB 😊
Hey Murray, still working through the back catalogue but really enjoyed this one. Thanks Sean.
Wonderful. Thank you.
Fantasticas always.. munro Moonwalker is a firm favourite of mine too, and I was out walking in the dark and up in the clag but on this occasion, I didn't break above them, so was good to see yours!
I admire your commitment. Amazing results. Thanks for sharing.
Another Great Inversion. I managed this year to seen only one. Few weeks ago on top of the Black hill next to Brecon Beacons. My tip is when you want to see It on lower mountain. IT need to be predicted fog in the Valley at the nearest town. Next I checked weather on the summit on the mountain weather site. If this tells me sunny without clouds. Thats a time to go for it. That day end up driving there and back in fog but whole walk above the clouds.
Just a simple thanks Murray ! Love watching your vids!
That is SPECTACULAR! 😯
I hope you got some great photos?
Stunning video, TV quality viewing and it's almost as if u have a production team up there with you😁
Cheers again for the time and effort you put in to show us the spectacular scenery you manage to capture
Brilliant video as usual
Awesome views!
That's got to be one of your best. Stunning video mate. Thank you!
Thanks Grant - it was a rather fine morning on the mountain for sure :)

Stunning ❤️🏴
Absolutely fantastic murray, well worth the early start pal superb footage as always, cheers pal.
One of my favourite Munro’s , did it way back in Dec 1998.
Had a fall on the north east side coming down took a wrong route , found getting steep , my ice axe saved me.
Then below was an iron cross a memorial to someone who died at the same spot I nearly died. In 1898 I think. Also a Wessex rescue helicopter crashed at the spot killing the pilot. Could see evidence of .wreckage some wires .Memorial to the pilot is the cross on Ben Ledi.
Nice footage , can understand you wanting to get out early to film it.
breathtaking!💙🗻
A tremendous effort but the results were worth every step. That looked like an a amazing sight to witness, thank you for sharing.
You only have to struggle once to get up to climb at night. The rewards are all the inspiration you need for the next ones. Murray Christmas 🎄 to all 👍🏻
Merry Christmas to you too :)

That is just brilliant. Thanks, Murray. 👍🙂🏴
Absolutely fantastic, Murray! Now I am definitively sure why we bought a brand new 4k 55inch TV - it is only because of the videos like your ones. No single program from the standard affordable channels can offer the true and original experience as you deliver, especially in this one. Don't want to ruin your health but please, consider waking up at 2:30 am some time in the future again:) All the best from Tatanka
Always better on the big tele 📺:)
Getting spooked in the mirk eh...what were you expecting...a dirty great big highlander with a Claymore thinkin' you were rustling his sheep?...Fantastic video Murry...thank you
No but thats what I'll be thinking next time!! lol

spectacular! memories are made of this
Now that was definitely worth the early morning Murray! Ben More is a mountain I’ve yet to climb but I have seen a lot of great videos from yourself and others in this mountain. You described this trip really well mate and it made me realise why so many of us climb the mountains. Cheers for sharing👍
Stunning
Thanks Murray for Vlog 👍
Thanks for watching :)
Take care

Absolutely glorious, great choice of hill Murray, your gamble paid off. One thing that made me laugh was your comment about sheep eyes looking like the devil in a headtorch! I remember that well from Scafell Pike in the dark on my own doing the Three Peaks back in the 90s, very "otherworldly"!!
The piercing eyes can be a little unsettling at times 😂
You make your own luck. Thanks for inspiring us!
Getting up at 2am to bring this to us......... THANKS ❤️ Brilliant footage.
Fantastic!
What an early start, definitely worth it though!
Superb Murray, perfect conditions. I went up Snowdon for a sunrise on Xmas day. Forecast was for cloud coming in between 8 & 9 and sunrise was 8.18 so was hoping..but thick cloud! It was a great walk anyway. 👍
"Was it worth getting up at 2 in the morning"? ask me a hard one, great stuff loved it.
No waffle from me just a simple "Wow"
You make your own luck and thanks for taking us along with you.

Thanks Brian - it was a fabulous inversion - hope to experience more :)

Amazing video, just fantastic. Have ordered the Moonwalker book (bookshop.org) - if Murray says its his favourite hillwalking book then that's sold it to me!
Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did, great stories and well written :)

Absolutely magical Murray. I was beginning to wonder why you hadn't used the drone for a while. Glad it's still being put to good purpose.
Thanks Ian - dont tend to use it very much TBH - only gets dusted down occasionally :)

Wow! My favourite bit is the almost surreal shot at 13.15. Just spectacular. I recognised the mountain from the stile, even though I've only climbed it from the east and from the south. The stile and the path look similar to Stob Binnein's but in significantly better condition! Must have been some slog in the early hours.
Thanks Natalie - always think if doing the two hills the route from the south is far more scenic :) Up Stob Binnein first :)

amazing views ty for sharing it with us stay safe m8 why on earth you dont have a tv show about all your walks is beyond me
Really love your vids man. Picked myself up a nice Sony camera after seeing the footage you get with yours. Love the quality of the clips you get, can't wait to get up to Scotland and get my camera in action up there.
How do you top that Murray ? ..... Stunning stuff. 👍
Superb Murray, brought back memories of the Liathach summits poking through the clouds viewed from Beinn Alligin. A wet day out with little in the way of views but oh boy once we got above the clouds it was stunning, brought a wee tear to the eye. ATB
Thanks Harry - always remember days like these - I think the best ever inversion I got was on a Corbett near Inverlochlaraig on Hogmanay many moons ago - forecasting wasn’t as good then and I wasn’t expecting it but just as I reached the summit ridge I rose out of the clouds to a breathless heaven - alway remember that one :)

Wow! The sun rising over an ocean of cloud up on the mountain, does it get any better than this? A hill walkers paradise! You always take us on such a journey, thank you for taking us along! You deserved your reward after such an early start and the effort you put into your climbs and your vids😊👍
It certainly was a hillwalkers paradise for sure - wasn't too sure if I would get any cloud but was glad when I popped out above it on the top of the mountain :)

Alan Rowan will definitely like this one. 👌🏼 Nicely done and I spoke too soon about drone footage. 😂
Thanks Robin
Great vid by the way , watched it a couple of times .. The only inversion I've had happened to be from Cruach Ardrain in August 15th 2020 .
Another stunning vlog, Murray!! Definitely worth getting up at 2am for, pure bliss.

Stunning video Murray, worth it for us you getting up early :-) great time-lapses and drone footage.
Did I just see a Brocken spectre in the 15th minute?
Murray, you must luv those extra UA-cam steps. Great to see the drone back😀. Another top vid well done.
Think I walk twice as far going back for the camera !! it was rather chilly on the top too so my numb fingers werent liking the setting up of the cameras!lol

Absolutely amazing Murray
I am also asked why I clamber out of my bed over and over again for sunrise photography. It is without doubt the most magical time of the day and so many people miss it.
have to agree - sunrise and sunset - thats why I like wildcamping - can enjoy both without the rush of getting back down :)

Great video as always Murry, what editing software do you use and what would you recommend for a notice vlogger, thanks.
Hi Julian - I use powerdirector- but TBh they are all pretty good but need time to learn the ins and outs but once you have chosen one it’s hard to change as you get used to how it works - there are a few free software options too worth checking out 👍
Good luck
ATB.

Another enjoyable video. I have only once been lucky enough to see an inversion (in normal sane hours of the day!).
I was surprised to see the drone up in that wind - it seemed to cope well though!
Nothing beats a good inversion - been lucky this year too (got a couple of great inversion adventures waiting in the wings for a Wednesday night soon :))

@@ScotlandsMountains All safe mate, missing the outdoors as I'm sure you are as well. Take it easy! :-)
Privileged to get an inversion on ben lawers about 2o yrs ago ,and on my way to Spain 😬
Thanks for that 🙂
Not quite up as early as you but up early due to the good old common cold at least it’s not dreaded CV anyway really enjoyed sharing your climb tremendous site and well recorded. Do t know why but i am always wondering what time of year it is your trip any chance you could tell us the date
Hi David - this was back in October I think, takes me a while to edit some of the videos and usually cannot get them out as quickly as I would like :( Next one is from even earlier - way back in late summer (its a long one though - you may need two cups of tea for it!"!)
