This is the song that introduced me to the B-52s. I was in Brazil in 1985 meeting the family of my future wife and this song was getting heavy radio play there. I taped the song off the radio and must have played it 500 times . I sill love this song, the B-52s and my Brazilian wife I have been married to for 32 years. When I hear this song it reminds me of my fist trip tp Brazil and my introduction to the B-52s. It will always be special to me. Eu Adoro B-52s

This song was such a big hit in Brazil that it was exclusively add to the Brazilian edition of the 1998 compilation "Time Capsule". I have the Japanese edition that comes with a DVD but it's a bummer it doesn't have "Legal Tender".

@@Edyth_Hedd There was also Klaus Nomi, died in August 1983 at 39. You might not have heard of him before, depending on musical taste. Klaus was a countertenor singer who just started getting attention starting in 1978, and who sang backup vocals to David Bowie on SNL in 1979. He was so early that AIDS was still called "GRID" ("Gay-related Immune Disease" at the time.

@@srhodes6963 not exactly. It was sheer hedonism, but the backdrop was nuclear anhilation. It was: let's have fun and be happy while we still can be. Not punk nihilism, but despair nonetheless, because there might not be a future. There's a dark edge. That shabby Southern chic and retro hairdos spoke of having little, being poor, and life being all downhill after brief youth. No future on both personal and existential levels.

It's amazing how current the B52s still sound. The crystal clear production doesn't hurt, but they were right on point with so many of their trademarks. Like using kiddie or toy instruments--so many "indie" type bands do that now.
I always loved how they snuck an awful lot of Motown into their sound, which back in the 80s, was grouped in with "New Wave", alongside fellow Americans Devo, and the Brit brigade of synth poppers like Bronski Beat and Scritti Politti. They were very image conscious, in such a fun and theatrical way, something that is sadly too often missing from today's "indie" types who wear the same understated thrift store "undercover cool" looks onstage and off, almost like they're too embarrassed to really go all out when it comes to a stage show. That distancing sense of irony; of trying to act like you don't really care--the B's were all about being giant goofy dorks and having as much fun as possible without EVER trying to be cool.

    We're in the basement
Learning to print, all of it's hot
10-20-30 million ready to be spent
We're stackin' 'em against the wall
    Those gangster presidents
Livin' simple and trying to get by
But honey, prices have shot through the sky
So I fixed up the basement with what I was a-workin' with
Stocked it full of jelly jars and heavy equipment
    We're in the basement
10-20-30 million dollars, ready to be spent
Walk into the bank, try to pass that trash
Teller sees and says, "Uh-huh, that's fresh as grass"
See the street pass under your feet
In time to buy the latest model getaway Jeep
So I fixed up the basement

Love shack was a big 80s tune so a new generation found the B52s that way and didn’t really grasp the fact that B52s were already badass by the time they did Love Shack, Roam, etc. it’s just like now, so many new, younger generations hear a song and it blows them away and don’t realize it’s a cover. So many cover songs it would boggle your mind. Covers that if you looked into it you’d find the original song was actually from the 1920s or 30s, 40s or 50’s and so on. Song has so many different singers and instruments put to it that it’s an entirely new sound. Crazy.
Needless to say though, the B52s have been out of this world since they began and so absolutely original that no one can out rock them.
