@@impassable the only bright side to that is that she was going to marry Liat off to someone else, but the fact that they traveled to the Navy’s base in search of Cable indicates Liat knows how to stand up for herself and what she wants, and will never allow her mother to keep her from anything again. From 1955. This is such a classic "happy" song from the Broadway musicals. Juanita Hall is not even Polynesian but totally looks like she is. She was perfect for this role
@geoleo2597: 1) It was 1958; 2) Juanita Hall was Africa American; 3) Her vocals were dubbed by Muriel Smith who played both Bloody Mary in SOUTH PACIFIC and Lady Thiang in THE KKNG AND I when those shows played at the Drury Lane, London; 3) It is far more important that talent is the determining factor not ethnicity. After all, Yul Brynner was not Thai/Siamese in THE KING AND I, Mary Martin was not Austrian but from Texas and Julie Andrews born in England for THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
@@secret902 I'm not sure about that. Tonkinese is not a race of people, but a breed of cat. The movie was in the South Pacific so I believe Mary was referring to Tonga but called themselves "Tonkinese" but that may have been for creative writing to make it sound good for the movie. There's many politically incorrect words in the movie. There's no Bali Hai either. And of course, Bali is Indonesia, again not in the South Pacific.
@@geoleo2597The author of the original book, James Michener, specifically described Bloody Mary as a Tonkinese woman, modeling it on a Vietnamese woman he met while in the South Pacific (according to his memoirs). At that time, Tonkin was the northernmost portion of Vietnam under French rule.

I've forgotten how beautiful this film was, and how many cultural issues it touched upon, while framed by a world war. This scene alone - the romance between an Island girl and Joe Cable a white Marine from the midwest (ostensibly his firm time away from home since OCS), speaks of joy and hope, and a future beyond war. Better still, that the producers of this film didn't use white actors in makeup, but hired a native girl and Juanita Hall to play Bloody Mary; herself part black and part Irish.
The “native girl” has a name. France Nguyen Van-Nga. She is a native of France and is of Vietnamese lineage. She is a clinical psychologist and worked as a counselor for abused women and children. She was also married to Robert Culp for several years.
