That thumb guard is also useful for if your issued duty vest comes right down to your beltline. Without it, lots of guys (including me) have had their vests "unsnap" their safariland holster hoods as you sit/stand/move about. You have to constantly be checking to see if you're unsnapped.
G-Code has a great holster platform called the mule- it's a drop-leg that's only a little lower than a midride. Basically just a midride with a pivot point, and a single leg strap for the Han Solo look in case you need to shoot first if you're sitting at a table or something. I also like the idea of modular mounting point, not to change holsters but to put the same holster on different platforms depending on what I'm doing.
The G-Code/Mule is my go-to configuration when drilling for waifu pillow rescue. My par time is down to 9.8 seconds from start to Sayaka-chan safely extracted from the basement.

Thanks GT! Because of your recommendation for the Safari Land with ALS, I bought one for my new Glock 19X in a similar color. I really like and practice drawing several times a day from all sorts of positions. Before, for my older Ruger P85, I could only get a Serpa for it. I'm not in a service or LEO but it worked for me. A lot of practice drawing there also. Anyway, I always enjoy the subtle humor (sometimes not so subtle) you inject into your videos.

Mid ride holsters with the strap are my favorite, comfortable, perfect placement for draw, high speed as fuck lol! I despise standard drop leg holsters! Every time I'm issued them, I always deny, I'd rather carry a pistol in a M4 mag pouch then use one.

  • @HeavenlyWolf666

Personally own a holster for my CZ P07 from an Israeli company that I never even knew existed until I bought it: Front Line.
It's a belt/paddle, thumb-snap holster with adjustable passive retention screws and is made from an interesting assembly of materials that make for a surprisingly remarkable home for my pistol. An outer layer of kydex is loosely molded to the dimensions of your pistol, followed by a layer of nylon, then a more exact molding of PVC, and lastly, a suede lining. They call this weird conglomeration of layers "KNG," or "Kydex New Generation." The suede lining has kept my CZ looking new with zero holster wear showing after nearly two years. The holster itself has shown no signs of damage.
No jostling on the hip when running or doing other strenuous activity. Albeit, I do wear a stiff nylon belt, so that helps. And absolutely no wiggling of the pistol in the holster, whatsoever.
    The damned thing just works.

  • @jingle9691

I've seen setups with TQ and compact IFAKs on a drop leg platform, I think its a good idea because if you're going to drop anything in an emergency it's more likely going to be your BA not your holster so in that situation you'd still be able to make and plug holes 👍
Personally I use a two strap drop leg much higher than you described. I know that when my arm is relaxed down my side then my hand drops straight onto my sidearm and clears any gear I've got.
I find the belt and mid ride holsters more difficult to drive in too.

I still use the SERPA for my 1911 and Sig P226. Like you said it takes training and many reps to be comfortable with it as a duty holster. From personal experience I wore the SERPA for my Springfield 1911 as a duty holster while working for a weekly/monthly apartment complexes here in Las Vegas NV. One company I started working for after my old manager who got canned from the one I got hired originally had called me to join her in the new company she started to work for. Reason was she liked that I was always showed up for work and on time and did not mind how dangerous the kind of shit that weekly/monthly apartments are and being a veteran combat infantryman from service in Iraq for 3 tours. I showed up for work during a graveyard shift in a new company and complex which was filled with thugs, drug dealers, pimps etc. like before. So I was introduced to the manager of the complex and gave me a briefing about the place and pointed out all the thugs present and gave me the office keys before he went home. I then patrolled the area and I had problems with a pimp/drug dealer from the start on the first night on shift. After trying to get him off property numerous times, he then confronted me because I was new to the place and told me that he was first going to kick my ass and kill me. I first was suspicious and then a few seconds later he attacked me. I first used my pepper spray then baton which both didn't work because this guy was 6,5 football player size and high. My Leprechaun ass at 5,6, 180 LBS fought UFC style with this monster of a guy for almost 10 minutes because pepper spray and being hit hard with a steel baton had no effect on him. He got me pinned down on a "Bulldog" which I could not use my arms no matter how I tried to get out of it and nearly blacked me out. Somehow I managed to puff up and keep myself alive from being squeezed out of breath and pass out. Lucky he got tired and moved his left arm and kept me locked by locking his arm with his right and managed to breathe again from under him. I then looked down and saw my 1911 on my SERPA holster on my right side and drew it quick and put the muzzle close to his chest and said "Get the fuck off me now!". I then got a negative reply of "Fuck you! You are dead motherfucker!". I then took the safety off and squeezed a round into his chest. I saw no flash from my muzzle but heard a crash of two heavy anvils smashing together like a very loud ping. The muzzle and slide of my 1911 was very close to my face like 5 inches approximately when I squeezed my round off. He then dropped on my head planting my face into the parking lot asphalt hard. I rolled him off quickly to put another round into him but I did not take another shot because he looked like he fell asleep after being shot once from a .45 ACP Glaser Blue tip round. Then the pepper spray which I was covered in took effect a few seconds later to almost shut my eyes for other threats and burned like hell because I used my entire can on this monster. After looking around from what little I could see that none of his buddies were around to attack me. I then got 911on my phone and a policeman arrived in what I thought was 5 minutes and helped me quick. I was covered in my own pepper spray and could hardly see for 5 hours. I was interviewed by Metro Police and detectives for the next 4 hours. The detectives and officers treated me with respect and kindness because I was in pain. I suffered a few bruises and a bite on from the guy on my right arm. The paramedics treated me first and they put the monster in a gurney and rolled him off with no lights flashing. I finished the interview with the detectives and were satisfied of what I told them and was released from custody 9 hours later. My 1911 and duty belt plus accessories were taken from me for evidence. Then all asked me about my SERPA holster? Reason was my pistol didn't fall out during the wrestling and UFC style rolling fight and shooting him when I did have a chance. I told them that it is a good holster when I keep the release clean and tighten the retention screw for maximum retention before I put it on for work. Honestly that was hell when you have to fight anyone hand to hand and shoot them in a tight spot. I was lucky to survive because most security guards like me and law enforcement guys never been to combat and feel the mode how to survive. Security and law enforcement are trained differently from Infantrymen. In Infantry the training is kill or be killed. But being in security we have to follow the Force Continuum like ROE (Rules of Engagement) for the civilian world. This could have ended quickly if I had decided to use the military ROE way and not end up getting bitten by this cock sucker. I did the security guard/law enforcement Force Continuum way which almost cost me my life. Bottom line is the SERPA did me good as far as retention and quick access when you understand how to employ it.

I will come out and say that I am primarily an airsofter (though I am starting an interest in the real-steel stuff, and trying to shed weight for the Army), and I have practiced drawing a Glock replica from a Cytac-branded Serpa knockoff numerous times; the Cytac holster has a larger paddle with a lot of it resting above the trigger guard area. So with this practice, I've gotten to the point where my finger is sitting on the frame of the pistol well above the trigger guard by the time my pistol is free from the holster.
With all of that being said, I was turned well away from paddle-type holsters after last weekend at a pickup game (just an open pay-n-play, nothing big like MilSimWest or Lion Claws). One player on my team was running a Serpa for his 1911 replica, and eventually had his pistol jammed in the holster when some dirt got into the paddle mechanism. Needless to say, that was all I needed to decide against ever using paddle holsters in field conditions, whether airsoft or real-steel in the future.

I've used a both a SERPA style and a Safariland ALS holster.
When using the SERPA, I would always draw so my finger landed on the slide above the trigger guard. It was pretty ingrained and felt natural. However, I would never recommend it for two far worse reasons: First, If you had to hit the dirt ( or sand, or snow) before drawing and any sand, mud, or snow gets behind that button, your release is jammed and drawing is impossible. Second, and this actually happened to me, that little button's pin worked itself out and the button fell off the holster. I had to find it and reattach it before I could get my weapon out. Far too unreliable for an EDC.
Then I bought the Safariland and it was love at first draw! It is the smoothest, most natural draw with great retention! I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Another reason for the Thumb Guard on that Safariland is to combat the "Parolee Chop" I've seen guys who have practiced dropping their hand pinky first onto the inside of the holster like a karate chop and they can disengage both the hood and ALS in one motion. Out of curiosity a couple buddies of mine tried it and found with little to no practice we could do it with a fair amount of ease on holsters without the thumb guard. I would STRONGLY recommend a thumbguard if you're using a holster with a hood and/or ALS especially if it's a duty holster.
As usual excellent video keep up the good work.

On the rare occassions I see people open carry in public (usually fuds with their 1911s) it's always a damn leather holster and it's usually one of the ones that isn't designed for any specific gun and retains all pistols equally poorly across the board, or worse one of the floppy cloth holsters that looks like it's made out of a mousepad.

Learher bianchi outside the waist holster for the 1911; be sure to get the thumb break/snap. That keeps the firearm securely on your hip and will retain said firearm as you move....as for drop leg holsters, well every year we had at least a couple guys shoot themselves trying to learn quick draw.

Really enjoying the dry humor and constant amount of jokes at the beginning, but really appreciate the information about the different types of level retention holsters. I am kind of curious as to whether or not someone could use or mix certain products from T.Rex-Arms and G-Code and use them interchangeably. For example: would like to use the QLS system T.Rex-Arms offers, but have an RTI G-code holster system, while adding the leg strap. Kind of a lot to make a holster system work for mid-ride, but just some thoughts.

I've used the Safariland SLS for many years and it's a solid holster for sure. However, I've noticed that I had to pay attention to maintain the "tactical fuzz". It would start to peel and sort of fold over into the holster and tend to bind up on the gun. I also noticed that after a while, the fuzz got quite sticky when it got wet. It would start with having trouble reholstering, then binding up on the draw. I've recently transitioned to the Safariland 7TS ALS and so far, not experiencing any of that. For kydex, I've used G-Code, BladeTech, and CompTac and all have performed really well. Mostly in competition use. I'm trying a couple of Ragnaroks now as well. They seem solid.
Great information with a good combination of "stick to the facts" as well as personal opinions. Of course, the entertaining quips here and there. Haha
