Having worked more than 15 jobs, on three continents in the last 20 years, Edward Hartwig tells a story of personal development and reinvention.

I left my hometown of more than 40 yrs. Gave away all my possessions and moved across the country. Just my car, some clothes & pictures. It was the best thing I ever did....
That's amazing. I mean I did something similar but I was 24 at the time.

I left my family, friends and partner to pursue my dream career in another continent. 4 years have gone by, I had everything I wanted. However, I ended up being depressed and alone. Constantly thinking about ending my life. But a month ago I decided to quit my “dream job” and start over again and restructure my beliefs system of happiness and success. I’m terrified, but I haven’t feel the adrenaline to survive and live life for so long.

I’ve moved across the USA three times alone. Once without a ‘reason’ (no job, friends, or family at the final destination). It’s challenging and hard, and I would advise everyone to do it at least once in their lives. The life lessons and skills you learn are almost too many to count.
Left where I grew up in Va to following my retiring parents to Ga and I don’t like it.😭 trying to get the guts to pick somewhere else to move

I didn't know what to do so I went to law school ...
where is the part about how he has a bunch of money lying around so has time to chase all these passions? no story of any hardship at all... really far from 99% of anyones reality..
That was the biggest question I had. Especially when he kept saying he wasn't a good student. I wanted to know what got him to the point where he figured he could go to law school out of boredom, because few people can just relate to that.... I would be more inspired by those details.
He did say that he didn't make any money as a prosecutor, but having BEEN 'that' wife, it may have been his wife who supported him.
This is how I work too! I make life choices that alter my life and no one understands me.

So what’s the secret of starting over? I’m confused. I liked his story, it was engaging and interesting but I didn’t see clearly how it can help me? But good for you! You went through so much! And learned a lot
It was a dreadful speech. I also find it hard to believe at his age he has done so much. Being a plumber takes years to learn. Being a carpenter also takes years to learn. Starting over means having courage to face the unknown and the confidence in yourself to start over. It also means building your determination to succeed no matter the circumstances. I'd need to see proof before I believe the tall tales I just heard.
@@plantmanstudios Yeah thought the same. The talk itself was rambling. I'm guessing he's just doing handyman work based around those trades rather than being a full on professional in those areas. That's not to disregard how good he was at those roles. Some guys are just naturally good at any task without the qualifications / experience needed.

Yeah, about 30 seconds in, I thought, "This is the last person I want to take advice from," but I listened to the whole speech just the same. Not a thing in it relating to starting over I my opinion.
After 45 years of banking, quit my job, and i am going to start over with a different career. Dont know yet what it will be . Taking a year off vacation before starting new career

I usually like it when people tell stories, but this was so boring...
So often in Ted Talks, the presenter makes the mistake of thinking you want a blow by blow description of THEIR story, THEIR experience over 20 years. We dont. We want to know how to make over our own lives - tips, strategies, ideas and resources. If youre going to give background, keep it to like 3 mins.

This is not suppose to be a “professional” speech. It’s suppose to educate so you can hopefully get something out of his story. Learn to not judge too quick. You never know what you’ll miss that might help your life.

@John Fernandez -- Some people have empathy and humanity. Some don't. He's talking about having to leave his wife who has been such an amazing life partner to him; about the courage that took. It's not about hydration. It's about emotion.

Hugs. It’s difficult. I stopped talking to my parents at 33 because they were destroying me. Please watch Uncommon knowledge therapy here on youtube. They help to restructure beliefs and get rid of victim mentality. 💕
Thanks for sharing the lessons. However I am sorry but it is another story of a patriarchal family where the male is the one who chases his dreams (hiperactively btw) and the wife has to just follow over, with her professional dreams being discharged and focused on his.

Great job and God bless. But the less fortunate including myself can not come even close to relating to your story. Have any idea what it would do to someone's credit score to uproot and go through the apartment leasing process every few months. Great story but ridiculous to most middle class people which are the ones who really need the help considering our limited resources
Plus, what's so admirable about having zero attachments to your home state, the people, the places? Should we all just be free floating entities bobbing about whenever the whim seizes us? What about loyalty to aging parents, spouses, in laws? Just asking.

Amazing speech! Though speaking with your chest would improve an already incredibly written talk.
makes me feel like this is sus, reminds me of the catch me if you can con man, they found out that even in his interviews after he was back to normal that he was lying in the interviews describing his life. This also reminds me of the movie The Big Fish. every other thing he says it makes you gasp because it's so hard to believe.
