I would think you could also fit four Naval Strike Missiles somewhere on the superstructure.

"My name's Sub-Lieutenant Joe Cheng" Joe, your parents were so unambitious for you! Why didn't they name you "Admiral Joe Cheng"? Thanks, for the tour, admiral, but I'm left mystified as to exactly what this vessel is! With the cranes and the large helicopter deck, I thought it must be some sort of littoral combat ship, an LHD or something of the sort, but, looking it up, I see it's classed as an offshore patrol vessel; a 6000+ tonne offshore patrol vessel, no less (so, about 3 times the size of what I'd consider a "typical" OPV), and with ice-breaking capabilities, based on a Norwegian Coast Guard design.
Not enough fire power should anything series try to force it's way through the Artic zone. Other than that a fine ship. Need to finish the rest of the class and get the Frigates started.
@@themanformerlyknownascomme777 I have looked at the Canadian surface Combat Project and the Frigates are not due for another 9 years if they get built at all as there are another round of proposals to go with cheaper options.
Yes. Minimum defensive armament should be what it carries now and a 20mm Vulcan CIWS in the aft. The supply AOR vessels weren't combat vessels either. Yet the 20mm Phalanx, in a pair, was always there & 4 heavy machine guns. This expensive vessel rates one CIWS.
As an ex brit sailor with time on a AC carrier, DC minehunter and, a variable DC sub, I’m confused. Did he mean the generators in the “engine” room propel the ship or supply power to electric motors THAT propel the ship or ?
This is a diesel-electric ship: it has a diesel-electric powertrain with four 3.6-megawatt (4,800 hp) diesel generator sets (what he showed on the tour) producing electricity for two 4.5-megawatt (6,000 hp) propulsion motors. So, the second of your options.
Russian arctic patrol runs twin 100mm, Danes a 76mm and secondary turret twin 30mm, Norway a 57mm, same gun as our frigates. Running this in lonely arctic waters with such dismal armament is a testament to the value our RCN considers its sailors. But this junior naval officer cares more about his private toilet.
It’s not a “fishing” boat...it’s a “supply” boat...and in the idiot boys defence, this was started in the Harper era...not that he wasn’t responsible for purchasing 2 more of these POS platforms.
When did the Halifax class upgrade to a 76mm gun, when I was on them they had a 57mm. As I recall it was the Iroquois class that down graded from a 127mm gun to a 76mm.
This is a reconnaissance warship without the equipment/ a coast guard ship sailing as a warship - against Russia’s push into the Arctic Ocean. It has zero to negative chance against a Russian battleship Russian subs and the 28 ports that Russia built on the other side of the Arctic Ocean.
Why? No one is going to invade Canada in the north when they can invade Vancouver Island and Newfoundland easy. Canada does NOT have any sealift ships suitable to sustain a battalion of their army on either the west or east coast islands. Yes, Canada should acquire at least two LHDs similar to Spain's Juan Carlos like the Australians. Your coasts are wide open for invasion, all of them...
@@ronclark9724 No one is going to invade Canada at all. Stopping an invasion isn't what these vessels are for. Rather, they are for protecting our interests in a remote part of our territory, on which hostile governments have their eye.
Ya Canada doesn't have any MANPADS. Other then the installed Air Defence weapons on board warships Canada's military has NO ground based gun or missile system.
No. They say it's not intended to be in combat situations with other warships. One officer described AOPS as "the navy's pickup truck." It's intended to do everything else but ship to ship combat - that will be the CSC.
I don’t understand the complaints about this class of ships being under armed given its purpose and operating theatre. It’s not meant to do the job of a frigate or destroyer. It’s meant for arctic patrol. In any event, the BAE Mk 38 is a pretty robust weapon system. Remotely operated from the CIC, the DeWolf-class ships are using the latest generation mod 3A, which has low light capability and which can train its surveillance system separately from the gun, making it more difficult for a target know what’s being targeted. And it has auto tracking, and the platform can hold two different kinds of munitions that can be selected remotely. It’s a great choice for a patrol vessel. The Royal Australian Navy has been equipping their patrol boats (Armadale and Arafura class) with the Rafael Typhoon, a similar 25 mm platform - and I dare say their operating theatre has far more hostiles than our arctic patrol boats will ever see.
Ship looks great, but maybe up the armament to a 57 mm? 25 mm seems a tat too small. Maybe also add some more machine guns. idk ik it's a patrol vessel but still. Under armed imo.
The reserves can be deployed just the same as regular force if that's what you're asking. In the Navy I think you have a lot less control over deployments depending on what ship you're posted to and if you're posted to a ship at all.
It's an arctic patrol boat with combat capabilities. It is not intended to be an offensive warship but can be outfitted with the necessary armament to do so.
guns are dead on navy ships, they have mostly been mid range anti air, up to this point with little use in a battle other then against a much smaller fast boat. surface to air-harpoon types are the main armaments' these days for mid tier navies. many different systems can be added to this platform as needed.

There is a reason most military don't have icebreakers. You can hear them from across the ocean when they break ice.
So they just abandon their arctic and antarctic waters? No, most military forces just don't need icebreakers.
"My name's Sub-Lieutenant Joe Cheng"
Joe, your parents were so unambitious for you! Why didn't they name you "Admiral Joe Cheng"?
Thanks, for the tour, admiral, but I'm left mystified as to exactly what this vessel is!
With the cranes and the large helicopter deck, I thought it must be some sort of littoral combat ship, an LHD or something of the sort, but, looking it up, I see it's classed as an offshore patrol vessel; a 6000+ tonne offshore patrol vessel, no less (so, about 3 times the size of what I'd consider a "typical" OPV), and with ice-breaking capabilities, based on a Norwegian Coast Guard design.
end of the vid has badass music tho
Emplace 2 or 3 armed UAVs, Hellfire capable. A 20mm Phalanx CIWS in the aft. These to augment what it currently sports.
Not enough fire power should anything series try to force it's way through the Artic zone. Other than that a fine ship. Need to finish the rest of the class and get the Frigates started.
this particular class is more for patrol purposes rather than fighting, if you want a fighting vessel look at the Canadian Surface Combat Project.
He's a subbie, probably fresh out of school.
@@kleinjahr Perhaps, but he's correct. Like our subs, the Harry DeWolf class vessels have diesel-electric propulsion.
Friday Chowder.Oh yes.
I suppose it could just carry an anti sub helo for counter those threats.
It should also have a better main gun, 105mm would be good, even though those are kinda old.
Trudeau spares no expense on his fishing boat.
How void of substance and personality does one have to be to bring up Trudeau or any other person without any context or prompting?
It’s not a “fishing” boat...it’s a “supply” boat...and in the idiot boys defence, this was started in the Harper era...not that he wasn’t responsible for purchasing 2 more of these POS platforms.
@@dserrao7188 Damn man, that was my attempt at sarcasm. Trudeau treats everything as his own high dollar toy, hense, the fishing remark.

how about a tour of the CIC?
Helicopter deck. Will it have a chopper on board?
Only in the warmer months when an ice pad is not feasible.
25mm cannon?!? The Halifax class is armed with a a 76mm and even that’s small
When did the Halifax class upgrade to a 76mm gun, when I was on them they had a 57mm. As I recall it was the Iroquois class that down graded from a 127mm gun to a 76mm.
Gorgeous and state of the art ship but the lack of armament is concerning. Seems like a bit of a sitting duck.
Yes, but they have great chowder!
it's a simple patrol vessel, the Canadian Surface Combat Project is where you find your need for armaments
It’s a nice opv. It’s lacking major weapons and no doubt weapons radars ect.
I am wondering where the electronics came from. Any idea? Maybe Huawei ?
@@daviator4720 probably lol
it needs a F35 for that huge flight area it would make up for the small gun
the B varient with light loadout could take off and land vertically
This is a reconnaissance warship without the equipment/ a coast guard ship sailing as a warship - against Russia’s push into the Arctic Ocean. It has zero to negative chance against a Russian battleship Russian subs and the 28 ports that Russia built on the other side of the Arctic Ocean.
It's a coast guard ship, end of discussion.
I guess that one gun on the bow justifies that ship being painted Grey and not in Coast Guard colours. (and not being built in BC)
Given the emerging threats of China and Russia in the arctic, I'm wondering why they didn't make this class more of a credible deterrent.
@@beautanner8409 is this pleasure craft gonna do that for us?
Is there any provision for MANPADS? I’ve read about more heavily armed patrol boats.
Ya Canada doesn't have any MANPADS. Other then the installed Air Defence weapons on board warships Canada's military has NO ground based gun or missile system.
This a combination patrol ship, supply ship, science ship and icebreaker, it is not ment to be equipped like a frigate or destroyer
Does it have a close in weapons system for defense
No, just two Browning .50 cals in addition to the 25mm.
No. They say it's not intended to be in combat situations with other warships. One officer described AOPS as "the navy's pickup truck." It's intended to do everything else but ship to ship combat - that will be the CSC.
Crosman .177 air rifles. Bring the hate. ;)
A lot of people seem to think that this icebreaking patrol ship will be leading the fleet into the South China Sea.

28 ships for the Pacific fleet.
These are replacing the Kingston Class?
These are not the replacement for the Kingston Class, this is a whole new class of ship - with a new capability!
@@RCNMRC I thought I read that Somewhere....anyway good to know.
Hi for reserves do u defand from home
The reserves can be deployed just the same as regular force if that's what you're asking. In the Navy I think you have a lot less control over deployments depending on what ship you're posted to and if you're posted to a ship at all.
is it a guided missile frigate or an LPD??????
It's an arctic patrol boat with combat capabilities. It is not intended to be an offensive warship but can be outfitted with the necessary armament to do so.
Neither...it’s a glorified supply ship...and small for that role.
At least put a 40mm, if you’re going to arm something do it right. May as well make this a coast guard boat, that 25 won’t put a dent in anything
And you're going to attack another naval ship with a 40mm canon? Goodluck with that.....
The 25 mm will definitely do a lot of damage as long as it can be fed with enough rounds and no stoppages. It's not designed for big game.
guns are dead on navy ships, they have mostly been mid range anti air, up to this point with little use in a battle other then against a much smaller fast boat. surface to air-harpoon types are the main armaments' these days for mid tier navies. many different systems can be added to this platform as needed.
The helicopters do the dirty work
