- Mission: To bring a first in class ship into service from the ground up involves training sailors, running the ship through its paces, learning all the new systems and technologies onboard.
In December 2020 the ship’s company in Harry DeWolf set out to sea on their first ever proficiency sail aka a crew shakedown.

An impressive vessel light years ahead of similar ships in Europe. Canada is finally building some class leading ships. The Type 26 will be a great ship and the latest version of the Halifax Class is virtually a new ship. Its also a lucky ship in so many ways. God bless the RCN and our allies.
This class is based on a Norwegian arctic patrol ship. Denmark also has two smaller arctic patrol ships, usually with one based at Nuuk, Greenland... If anything, Canada is following Europe, not leading Europe... Duh!
theyre both direct copies of european ships, britian is already building a type 34
@ronclark9724 yet the Thetis class of Danish navy patrol vessel are superbly armed, a 76mm Oto Melara, 11 machine guns, Lynx helicopter, torpedo launcher, ability drop depth charges. Similar is not even close to an accurate comparison.

@@ph11p3540 I'm glad you know so much about me from one comment. The amazing amount of clairvoyance that you show is staggering. Don't tell me what I am or am not qualified to do. You don't know a thing about me. I don't leave my family in another province for weeks at a time for work to feel the need to explain myself to the likes of a nobody who saw a comment and felt they needed to put on some etherial airs to sound like something they are not. Insightful. I earned my way into this job on my own merit and I am damn proud of the work that I do and the name that I've made for myself.

I still wonder about a program which started under Harper in all this time has produced only 1 small ship of 12 planned? Not to mention 12 new Destroyers as well? Meanwhile in just six years, well after the Canadian ship building program began, the British can build 2 huge new aircraft Carriers which are now complete and with the fleet?
The military is clearly not a priority for this government.
Britain has a big role in this world and has troops everywhere in this world. Canada cant relate
@Kadidlehopper Canada did allow their shipyards to rot. You can not turn on and off ships procurement like a light switch. After nearly 20 years between new ships being ordered, what expertise Canada learned building the Halifax class frigates and Kingston class patrol ships were lost when most of that expertise either retired or died... The costs of rebuilding skills and expertise is very expensive and time consuming, creating even more expense as time is money if only in labour...
@@ronclark9724 that was a pretty drawn out way of saying you don't live in a port city. the halifax and kingston class you speak of are so outdated the displays were literally in analog; they're being upgraded as we speak. its ridiculous to compare 30 year old ships to the ships of today, most of the people who built the halifax class alone would probably have to be at least partially retrained. We still have plenty of well experienced, modern engineers and technicians whove actually grown around 21st century methods, plus the east coast alone has pushed out at least 13 ships in the past 20 years..
I pass the Irving shipyard every day, we've already built two of the dewolf class with a 3rd almost completed. with the remaining 5 to be completed in the next 4 years. Were not an imperialist country, and look at who our neighbors are, the only thing we really need to defend is the arctic, which it used to be able to do on its own until a combination of technology and climate change eroded the harsh environment factor.
It should also have a 20mm Phalanx and one missile launcher. Along with the forward 25mm and two .50 BMG, should be it's minimum self-defence suite.
Same as Protecteur & Provider, air defence should be it's constant suit of armour. Not a true combat vessel, but not a soft target either.

Its armed with a 25 mm Cannon and two Fifty Cal Heavy Machine Guns. It's the first of six vessels for the navy - the first two (HMCS Harry Dewolf and HMCS Margaret Brooke) are already in the water. The coastguard is also receiving two unarmed versions of the class.
@@Caesar316 25 mm? the same gun which is on the LAV 3 personal carriers? Tell me how is that weakness suppose to deal with submarines under the arctic ice?
@@MegaWolfgang ...it's not. It's meant to enforce sovereignty and domestic laws. It's not meant to hunt or destroy submarines. This ship was built to address existing needs - not a hypothetical third world war.
Besides, the CSC will be MORE than capable to deal with subsurface threats.
@@canadianguy1955 ships are designed with specific purposes in mind this ship is specifically designed to operate in the Arctic and enforce sovereignty not engage in combat with other warships.
Also the American Arctic patrol ships that are being developed will have the exact same armament.

It’s was never designed to be a combat vessel. It’s a patrol vessel and it has capabilities that in some cases are new in the RCN and in some cases haven’t existed for decades. We have other ships with weapons. This is not that type of ship. Think of it more of a Canadian Coast Guard type vessel but without the buoy tendering. This ship and the rest in the class will return the RCN to the Canadian Arctic much more than for three weeks in late summer.

@@Zenith_123 I understand what you’re saying.....when I first saw that it only had a 25mm gun I thought it was inadequate as well. But this class of ships is not about combat. We will build 15 new 6500 ton vessels for that....they’re ALL about combat. This class of 6 vessels is all about getting our Navy back into the arctic and doing useful things there. Sub hunting will not be the responsibility of these ships but reporting a subs presence will be. I’m very keen to see how the Navy employs these ships in the arctic and on the other 2 coasts.

Not a warship… coastal patrol vessel meant to address drug and other illegal activities happening in canadian waters. Its 25 mm cannon may not be big, but i would like to see any non militarized vessel try and stop it.
@@troypatterson4437 there is no drug running in the artic and illegal fishing is minimal up there. This ship is meant to increase Canadian presence in the artic that is under threat from the UN trying to take it away from us declaring it an international zone. This ship will be going up against Nuclear ships like the armed Russian Nuclear ice breakers, subs. This ship is basically a massive waste of money even the landing craft is useless except for some atvs. Harper dropped the ball on this when he said we were getting strategic landers.
@@robertmaheu7583 well… you are correct for the future, however, the majority of the ships are planned to be and have been stationed out of vic and halifax. They have already conducted multiple drug busts off the east and west coast. Yes, in the future there may be some controversy over the NW passage, but seeing as the ships have so much extra space, it will be incredibly easy to add on weaponry if needed.
@@troypatterson4437 well yes any ship can do drug busts and fisheries patrols anywear this ship is an ice breaker its mission is artic defence and patrol no reason to run drugs up there

Beautiful ship but why does it only have 3 guns?🤣its a joke,there should be atleast 4 50.cals (not 2) and the main gun should be larger,you have all that space you could easily mount a few missiles or a cannon similar to the halifax class ships,how can a SHIP defend the coast/Arctic if it can only take out smaller boats with the firepower it has,so much defence potential waisted!
A soldier is quite capable of handling a bazooka from her decks... A whole company of soldiers could easily shoot automatic weapons from her decks, if necessary. Their Norwegian half sisters have a larger gun that most likely has never been fired in anger yet.
it has all that space precisely so it can be upgraded, when it needs to be. its called playing your cards close and frankly you dont need much firepower where these ships are going
Why in later builds is the superstructure not increased by one level, loose the hanger for helicopters, and install a UAV launcher and recovery deck and hanger. It would increase the over the horizon capability in the arctic without risking the lives of our air crews???
The flight deck is more than large enough for a drone capable of firing missiles... Forresty Forrest flies drones from the summit of Canada's Rocky Mountains... More than 100 summits so far...
Will this ship require escort vessel in a hostile environment.
patrol vessels are not typically sent to hostile environments

Why are they armed and staffed by military personnel?
Our navy is much too small to carry as an extra burden patrol vessels that only have a peacetine role. Money poorly spent.
