  • A few videos ago I introduced you to my £40 ($50) mystery spec Alienware gaming PC I picked up online. It was in a pretty sorry state with outdated specs and a near-broken graphics card.
    Today, I want to show you the changes I've made to it which basically consisted of removing all of the old components and slapping a Ryzen based configuration inside. This is the Alienware Revival.
    Thanks for watching :)

    You can still leave the USB cables inside and convert them by buying another piece of cheap female USB to 9pin type header cable for motherboard use. Or perhaps use some sort of internal USB expansion card to plug those cables there. Also - if you feel adventurous, you can swap the front USB type for a different PCB model. With just a little soldering you can then have USB 3 in there. I'm also sure that you can still fill some of those 5,25" blanks with additional I/O (headphones etc.) thingie :D Overall, very nice machine indeed!

      this is what I tought too, he can scavenge a regular front panel pcb from another old case and plug a pair of the original front usbs there then replace the other pair with a couple of usb 3.0 ones connected directly to the mobo and lastly replace that floppy drive with a blank plastic drive and drill some holes for the front audio jacks
      now that I wrote that it sounds like a lot of work to be done

    • @TotalInsanity4
      @TotalInsanity4 5 років тому +3

      Wouldn't even need to swap out the PCB, it looks like the wires are removable and are just standard motherboard connectors. If he can find an internal-internal cable, or splice two cables together, he could just do it that way

Micro ATX ryzen board with 16gigs of ram at 3600mhz. 500gb SSD, ryzen 5 2600 and a evga GTX 1080 with 8gb of vram. I pulled the original power supply and replaced it with a toughpower 850 watt. I replaced the original fans too though. Scythe 120mm. Scythe block CPU cooler and a 120mm slim for the side so it goes flush back together. It's my main PC and nostalgic beast. I love it.

    I'd love to find one of these cases for cheap.
    I remember when they were new; such an iconic design!
    I would have cleaned it with a hose though! (after removing all the electronic components obv.)
    It's already been said below, but you really should splice those cables from the front usb onto an internal usb port header.
    A fairly simple operation for even those with zero soldering experience.
    Even simpler solution would be to use something like a adpu2du-no3.

    I love the design of the old Area 51 cases. I remember drooling over them when I was taking my PC tech course in 2004. That is when I really got into building custom rigs and case modding. Right now my system is a Dell Precision T1600 workstation which I feel the case design has a similar feel but being a workstation it has some more practical design features. Like most prebuilts though the cable management is still very circa 2004. No PSU shrouds or motherboard trays for clean cable routing. Fortunately having started in this game back then I learned some old tricks to make due. Just like the Area 51 case back then a "gaming case" was the same as any prebuilt desktop case at the time but with a cool plastic shell and maybe an acrylic side panel (which I still think is better since you can mount a side panel fan).

  • @Levy_Wilson
    @Levy_Wilson 5 років тому

    I have a system I built in an old Raidmax case that used to house an old gaming rig circa 2004. The caps on the motherboard were blown and the power supply looked like shit so there was really nothing part-wise that could be salvaged. I stripped it out, cleaned it up, and got to work. I bought a dremel and turned the 4 80mm fan mounts into 2 120mm fan mounts. I also drilled a square hole in the motherboard tray to allow access to the CPU cooler bracket. Then I sprayed the inside black with plastidip since the case was a dull gray bare sheetmetal on the inside despite having a black exterior and an acrylic side panel. After the case was ready, I bought an h77 motherboard, a Xeon X3440, 2 4gb ddr3 sticks, an RX 480, a Samsung 860 250GB ssd, 1 TB hard drive, a Hyper 212, and 3 case fans. I wound up also having a guy 3d print me a fan mount bracket that fits into 3 5 1/4 drive bays to give me a total of 2 intake fans and 1 exhaust + power supply fan.
    It wound up becoming something that isn't quite a sleeper since you can see the internals, yet not 100% modern either. i.imgur.com/K89yizr.jpg

    One more thing to consider about these older cases is that cooling can be quite challenging, there's barely any intake/exhaust openings and the exterior plastic encasing doesn't help at all.
    It even was a bit of a problem with some of the older original components such as the Pentium 4 processors back then, not so much with the AMD Athlon 64 CPUs that were part of the Aurora configurations (Intel CPU based Alienware systems were always part of the Area 51 line whereas AMD based ones were all part of the Aurora line).
    A bit of trivia, these cases without the plastic outer parts are basically what was available back then as the Dragon case at retail. Alienware just repurposed those cases and added the plastic parts to it.

    Not exactly a sleeper build, but I'm still rocking the same PC case that I got for my first PC in 2004. The components were upgraded in 2010, but ever since I've saved the AM3 mobo and the PSU, but replaced the athlon ii x2 with a phneom ii x4 (since they're now quite cheap) and a proper copper cooler, moved from 2GB of RAM to 16 and from the original Radeon HD4780 ( think) to an OEM GTX745 that my mate gave me for free after he upgraded his OEM PC. Also added an SSD for a boot drive and kept the old Baraccuda for storage. Overall, I guess it's not all new parts, but making use of the 2010 high-end mobo even in 2019 is fun and it does a great job when I'm at my parent's house over the holidays (plays competitive titles at 1080p 40-60fps). Maybe when Ryzen 2 comes out people will start selling their Phenom ii x6 en masse and I can get one for cheap, always wanted to have a hexcore in this build, and the mobo does support 140W CPUs.

    StarTech actually sell 3.5" bay card readers that plug into USB 3 motherboard headers. They also have a single USB 3.0 socket, too. It'd help keep some of the retro feel, makes sure it works and also gives a USB 3 socket on the front of the case.
    I used one in my dad's old Core 2 Quad alongside a PCIe USB 3 header which lets him use his USB HDD without a Y-cable, at full speed and not have to faff around at the rear of his machine.

    I used to buy MSI M-Box Barebones systems from Newegg, for businesses. 99 bucks got you the Box, Board, CPU, and 2gb of DDR, even had a decent heat sink. AMD Socket 754, can't do much these days. But I kept the Box after the board went bad and I'm still using it. It's not made of the same Pot metal most boxes are made of, it's all brushed aluminum inside. has 2 still working front USB, headphone out and mic input. No Proprietary connectors so it works with any new board, I have a Mad Dog modular power supply in it, it's pushing an old AMD 4400+ on an Asus M2N Board. Barely works, but that system is merely for storage for my Plex server machine. But I've built several systems into that box, and it's still holding up. Uses a Water Cooled CPU Cooler, I can't find those anymore. And room for 3 HDDs, 2 DVD/Blue Rays, and I had a card reader in the floppy slot.

    What was an awesome build and glad to see it finished! Using an ITX GPU in these kind of restrictive cases is a very smart idea. However, I had an idea that you could easily get an adaptor on Amazon or ebay that converts motherboard USB into USB plugs so you can plug your front panel USB into the motherboard via the adaptor instead of reaching around the back and using up rear I/O motherboard USB if that makes sense. Sorry for the really long horrible sentence lol. But that is a very cool idea! You could always get a dremel and modify the side panel of the case to make some holes for fans because the radiator can be mounted to the fans and the fans can be screwed into the side panels. If you have a drill, dremel, and some masking tape it might be a fun project to take on and the fans could even be RGB to add some RGB elements to the build though that might ruin the Alienware aesthetic. I really like this PC and hope you do more sleeper builds in the future. I have never done a sleeper build before but am tempted to get an old Optiplex SFF case and turning it into an ITX gaming PC with completely new modern parts aside from the case.

    Hi RG.......I didn't catch your previous vid until it was too late, but I could have made the original build come to life with a boost! I have All the hardware in excellent condition rocking a socket478 era/dell/alienware builds, the case is history but the rest stays nicely packed away. If you venture into this again in the near future, drop me a holler.....I'd love to see a new build with older tech!

    Yup, i got a sleeper PC, old 90s Athlon XP Case, my uncle had a Duron swapped in and some standard cards like ethernet, a Geforce 4 series card, 512mb ram, took it off his hands and swapped my prebuilt into it since i had no time from exams to build my own, but hey the listing said a 960 and i got a 1060 with a discount, 16 gigs ram 1803mhz ddr3, 3gb gtx 1060 oc msi, late 2016 athlon, which funnily enough matches the stickers on the front along with being an MSi case from the 90s, matches my gpu, like you i had to ditch front hub IO because of the case but i plan to get some IDE>sata converters and put an IDE HDD in for spare storage, but mainly for the loud sound, get the floppy drive working since i could use it and put a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive for a sleeper look AND sound so people really don't think anything of it, heres a picture when i first built it just over a year ago: (runs games at high n dips to 30s in tough areas but stays above 60 in others, particles do hurt the cpu so i usually turn them off anyway)

    I aquired an old Gaming case ..its quite a large case so really needs an atx motherboard to fill it, I'm still undecided about making a retro looking computer with new parts or just use some good quality used bits to make a kool looking Gaming machine its a blue case with a perspex panel inside the metal panel on 1 side..it has had dragons cut into panel with some form of laser cutter which makes it look pretty kool ..I am not going to worry too much about the front panel wiring accept for the on and off switch and maybe a front usb . I have purchase a pcie adaptor so that I can have usb 3 at the rear of the case and will probably fit a wifi card as well. I have a i5 4th gen that I could switch the contents into the gaming case as well.. but I cetainly enjoyed your video..

Got a couple of machines that need upgrading, mostly for windows 10 & making current gen worthy, biggest challenge is finding low profile friendly parts for an office sleeper build once I know what's under the bonnet (We only have VGA monitors here unless I plug into a hdmi TV >.> )

      Sometimes, I wonder if some people call theirs a sleeper build cause the PC overheated and exploded and now it sleeps inside the case.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 5 років тому +3

      Mine definitely runs the coldest of most sleeper builds. Its an old Emachine case with FX-8350 and often a Titan Xp collectors edition. Why running cool? Well its phase cooled, so that CPU even at 1.7 Vcore and 500w doesn't get above 0c on the core. Block temp is -58c at idle and -25c at 500w load. It would look sleeper, other than the 20 KG refrigeration unit now bolted to the bottom. Its missing some of the front cover, side panel, and the top cover, so it looks absurdly trash and a sleeper if you didn't see the super shiny Titan sitting in it.

    On Battlefield V I played it with a RX580 4 Gig base version form sapphire. Ultra preset (low fxaa) and it ran 60-75 fps (75 was the maximum because of vsync). Ryzen R5 1400 OC to 3.5 ghz 8gb single stick 2400mghz hyperex savage ram. I had to overclock the cpu, still with the 3.5 ghz oc it was the bottleneck along with the 1 stick of ram.

    While I wouldn't call this a sleeper per say, it is in the original case. My brother's laptop was a POS and was blue screening multiple times a day (don't buy HP y'all, there QC is shit) and he asked me to build him a system. So I got him an old Optiplex with an i5 2500 for $90, put a new 600 watt PSU and a R9 270X 4GB (this card was little too long and I had to cut the case to fit it, whoops!) and my old SSD and it runs like a dream, it crushes the games he plays (EU4, UEBS, Skyrim, and the Forest.) Altogether the system cost 290 USD (excluding the AC wifi card that I got him as a Christmas present which was $50.) Hope y'all had a happy New Year!

    For those front usb ports, you could always take the USB header cable from another (decomissioned) system, I see that they can be unplugged from the front ports and likely be replaced with standard cables that plug into the board.

    Those cases, even without the Alienware body panels, were all the sh*t 15 years ago. I still have an Antec SX1040B case in that style, and used it for builds up until about four years ago. Those were some of the last popular cases before case designers started putting the power supply on the bottom.

    Same but different thing; I've got a 2008, 8 core mac Pro, which I've installed a GTX 680 (I flashed it), and patched to catalina. Using it as a design/light video editing machine but a definite sleeper build, paid probably about £200 for it, considering selling spares and upgrades.

    USB situation reminds me of my current build … i7-3770 on a misc junk bundle P8H61-MX USB3
    Case had ONE front USB3 using a 20 pin (dual) header, but the Asmedia USB3 on the motherboard only provided 2 rear ports and no header - so I got a Chinese cable that routes 2x USB3 A plugs to a 20 pin header, and routed that to drive the case USB (and still had one back USB3 as I only needed to fine which plug livened up the one port.
    There are Chinese cables to do most things, like cheating USB2 to a USB3 case connection, if there is no USB3, so instead of a dead port, there is another USB2 available.

    Me personally, I would have done my own version of an Alienware system:
    Either a Ryzen 5 2600X or an Intel Core i5 10,600K as they're both 6 cores 12 threads and sufficient for solid gaming and are over-clockable.
    The motherboard brand I'd go with would be MSI as well as the Graphics card and either have used a MSI GeForce GTX 1080Ti as in 2019 the RTX 20 series were a still a bit to expensive leading up to the release of the Ampere 30 series in late 2020.
    RAM I would have used would have been Kingston HyperX DDR4 3000 in 2×16GB (32GB total) as that would've been plenty and plenty fast enough.
    If I went AMD for the GPU I would've used the MSI version of the Vega 64 or Vega 56 which ever was cheapest and available.
    The power supply would've been an MSI MPG series A750F 80+ Gold Modular Gaming unit. 750 watts should be plenty for a system like that.
    And in 2019 that would've made for a beastly Alienware system.
