Hate to inform you....he is a world treasure. I am just over the border in NYS. I have driven hours/miles to see him....he has been here.....saw those concerts too! I adore the Canadians and everything Canada for sharing Gordon with the rest of us. ❤️❤️❤️
Long ago I was in love with a young girl when I heard the song for the first time. This song reminds me of a great love. I don't know what happend to her.
Note to Gordon in Heaven: A beautiful part of you was left here with us, and we love it and miss you terribly! God has blessed us with you and your music, and now He has called you back home. Rest forever in Eternal Peace...
Gordie is simply THE BEST songwriter in the folk pop rock era. PERIOD Great poet beautiful music Thanks, God, for putting Gordie on earth while I was here.
This song could not be written and sang only with the head. It was written with the brain soul and heart. Thanks GL! From the other side of the planet here it goes my gratitude. God Bless you GL.
Yeah, agreed. I can't think of anything or anyone thats been so overlooked in my life. So sad, especially at this time when he's at that age where he won't be with us a heck of a lot longer. Only wish i could talk to him and let him know what his music has meant to me for the last 35-40 years.
I live about a half hour away from where Gordon was born. By this accident of birth, I’ve been able to hear him on many occasions over the years. What amazes me and marks him as a musician is the way that he has grown into his own music. The songs are in many instances the same, but they are now infused with the maturity of a man who ho has passed through life, approached death and survived. There is an incredible dignity to his music. What more can I say?
Awesome! Saw Mr. Lightfoot 3 times in the 70's. I was a broke college student, could hardly afford the tickets but had my priorities. The woman I didn't marry was with me in my truck on a snowy Michigan road, December night, this song came on, and we fell in love all over again. The woman I married has had no such GL moment, still I love her more than life. No wonder I became a novelist, with Lightfoot's phrasings and imagery often creeping into my work. God, I'm a lucky man. Thanks for posting.
"I would be happy just to hold the hands I love... on this winter's night with you" ❤ One of my favorites. Thank you for the beautiful serenades ❤ God bless you always ...
When I was young I heard this and it make my throat catch. Now I'm almost 63 and it not only makes my throat catch but it brings tears as I think back...
Gordon Lightfoot, you will live on in your music. This song just brings tears to my eyes and always has no matter who has sung it. In some ways you are Christmas because of this song. Rest in Peace, Dear Canadian....I'm sure that your Canadian brothers and sisters in heaven were ready to greet you.
Such an amazing artist! The testimony to his talent is not only his performance, but to the countless number of artists who have covered his music. For over 40 years I have found peace and happiness with Gordon...I'd love another 40!
sitting by the fire up here in St. Paul, Minnesota, & watching the snow fall, it doesn't get any better listening to Gordon on this winter's night, Love & Hug's to all.........
Thank God for Live in Reno DVD. Buy it! This song chokes me up. If You Could Read My Mind, too. Haunting, beautiful. I've played it over and over again on more than one occasion, just trying to understand what went wrong. This one transports me to the coziness of a cabin in the northwoods, fireplace, drinking wine, snow gently falling and longing for someone.Obviously. Can't wait for snow here in the wilds of northernmost City of DeKalb, Illinois. Thank you, Mr. Lightfoot.
God love this man.. His songs are so magical to me.. I left Canada and now live in the Caribbean and thanks to the internet get to hear his voice and see his smiling face once again.. xo Darling
I Love this song: Emerald lake chalet (BC), checking on the custodian, shoveling the 7 feet o snow from the chalet roof. Coal oil lamps, propane heat, no power. Limited batteries. This song ran through my mind and spirit for my love back in Banff (Cyd). The sound of trains breaking to Field BC, from the famed Spiral Tunnels. Truly, love ran through my heart and soul. Sadly it is over 50years ago. Still the memory with this song lingers with affection. Thank You Gordon, for the sound track of my life, Inestimable thanks.
What a dear man Gordon Lightfoot is. His lyrics are among the best ever written--intelligent, sensitive, poetic. Mmm... Thank you for posting this video.
I'm from New Orleans and have seen GL the three times that he's been here (as far as I know). All were a thrill. I saw him at the new Orleans World Fair Exposition, and he was fabulous. His songwriting and insight, his maturity all deliver a polished performance that speaks so elegantly of the human condition.
I can't pick a fav Gordon tune because there are so many amazing ones. But this one could well be. Lightfoot is my #1 all time fav. My whole life i have wondered why he never enjoyed the degree of fame he deserves. So many others not even remotely close to his level of talent have become far more famous and well known. Dylan is considered a poet for the ages. How in God's name could anyone not find lightfoots music to be light years ahead of dylans in that regard let alone musically ?
Gord, I spent many a winters night listening to this song and thinking that this is what I see when I close my eyes and thinking of my winters in northern NB.
Years of Lightfoot only bring more pleasure to a follower that has been a follower of the most loved music in Canada & elseware Mr Lightfoot you have touched so many souls Nova Scotia Canada
I was talking to a friend who was going to his concert in Moncton a few years ago and she asked me to guess what song she liked the best."I replied "Song for a winters night"without even thinking. She was flabbergasted.I got quite a laugh out of it.Thanks for the great music through the years,Gord. Lov ya,man.
Such beautiful sentiment. You have to know what love is all about to write these words.all set to such a beautiful tune.Gordon you were the best…Rest in Peace.
Indeed, one of the most beautiful songs ever written. This is probably my favorite Gordon song, but how do you pick just one? Simply love everything about his music. In my younger days, this song sent me to a painful place. Now I can just enjoy it for the sheer beauty of it.
i love this song,,i can feel the snow and loneliness of waiting for someone,,its such a love song for your loved one,,gotta love gordon's music and his way with words..
The must be a nation (no borders) of Gordon Lightfoot people out there, people who share the spot on tuning to hear the incomparably unique genius of this fine poet's resonant sound and spirit. I just tonight, thanks to an idle UA-cam query, recaptured the special feeling I had so many years ago upon first hearing GL on "Ten Degrees and Colder" on a jukebox in some noisy bar, and wondering "who is that"? I'm not 64 anymore, but now a loving rambler, and the wide, western road is underfoot...
Songs that took my breath away so many years ago and STILL do the same thing! That my dears is something that has NEVER changed and that’s beyond rare! Thank you Gordon Lightfoot
I have long respected Gordon Lightfoot's amazing gift as a story-telling singer/songwriter. But I never knew this was his song! I thought Sarah McLachlan wrote it. I still think her rendition of it is beautiful, but I am happy to know that the song has a deeper history. And that that history reaches back to the great Gordon Lightfoot. Incredible song!
I've listened to a LOT of music in my time. I am in my 60's now. If someone were to ask me what my very favorite song was, I would have to say : Song for a Winter's Night by Gordon Lightfoot.
Gord is such a joy....and a perfectionist. I love those bells....and he even has them in a live performance. Thank you, Canada, for sharing your National Treasure. He is also a beloved hero for many, many Americans. I have been to his concerts and observed the love. His music keeps me strong today, so far, the worst day of my life.
Always has been my favorite singer came to concert in Portland Oregon every year around the time of my birthday so I'd buy two tickets as a present to my self and take a friend with me to see him always put on a great show.
what a treat and somewhat a miracle too, to be able to listen to gord play and sing this beautiful song... and watch moments caught in time. many thanks for sharing
I've loved Gordon Lightfoot music since the mid 70's. "If you could read my mind" was released in 1970 or 71 I believe. I was 15 and had a Valentine's Day party at home with my high school friends. I even had a boyfriend ! Alan Guidice. he and I stayed together through 1973 our senior year then went our separate ways. 36years later we reconnected. the love was still there.i married my HS boyfriend Oct 30, 2011. we played "Beautiful" at our wedding. on Sept 26, 2015, just 4weeks from our 4th wedding anniversary, I lost him to liver cancer. "Song for a winters night" is what Inow sing to him each day ♡ I hope to see Gordon on may 13 in Tarrytown, NY and thank him in person for all his heartfelt songs. Annette maffeo guidice
Gord wrote such heart wrenching poetry, and set it to music. His performances are on fire with the passion of music he treasures so deeply. No one else could tell these stories of tragedies, lost loves, and people.
One of the great things about his songs, his lyrics, are that they are so to the point and so universal that I find myself thinking, Oh, my God, he's lived my life. No one has written so many great songs, at least in the last half century.
One of the few greats who can equal the best & most successful of them..you will always get an honest, no frills, & sincere performance from this wonderful man!
My wife and I were somewhere in that crowd when Gordon was singing this song here inReno. What a wonderful evening that was. I love all his music but this is one of my favorites.
I may have been at that same concert. Was it the Carefree Highway or the one before? He was a bit under the weather, as I recall but he soldiered on. He just amazes me how committed he his to his fans and the music. "I'd Rather Press On" is definitely his autobiography.
Of all his tunes, and I love them all, even Canary Yellow Canoe, this song is what comes up decade after decade, at parties, in bars late at night, with women who have good taste. It follows me through the years. Good thing it sounds so good and never gets old.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful music - though it is more than music. I second what oczad says. The feelings you get from listening to Gordon Lightfoot just takes you away to a better place. Truly a master Artist and there is no-one that comes close in my opinion. May he play for many more years to come.
Can we all agree Gorgon Lightfoot is a Canadian national treasure
Along with Bruce Cockburn....

Gord’s Martin guitar lays down the beat that enables this song to slide so beautifully.
Yeah, agreed. I can't think of anything or anyone thats been so overlooked in my life. So sad, especially at this time when he's at that age where he won't be with us a heck of a lot longer. Only wish i could talk to him and let him know what his music has meant to me for the last 35-40 years.
Such nice peaceful music always enjoyed Mr Lightfoots music
NO SONG IS BETTER THAN THIS ONE FOR SOMEONE IN LOVE AND WANTS TO WIN HIS LOVE FAR AWAY. THANKS GORDON!

Once upon the time we had a so good song writer and singer as you are Gordon! Thanks to God you exist.
I love him so much!!!!

Hard to accept the fact that he's gone! What an outstanding talent!

One of the most beautiful songs ever written, IMO. The lyrics of Lightfoot's compositions are unparallelled.
This might be my favorite Lightfoot song. Glad to hear it 'live.'
Such beautiful sentiment. You have to know what love is all about to write these words.all set to such a beautiful tune.Gordon you were the best…Rest in Peace.
There's just one voice as beautiful as Gordon's voice and that's the voice of the Nightingale that sings outside my window now and then.
can't write or sing them any better than this.
The voice on that man...I've loved his music for years.
Poetic Perfection....

The only way this song can send anyone to a painful place is if they can't hear it's beauty
You're right , it's hard to pick a favorite. I have so many. I just about wore out my 8 track tapes of his playing them so much.
This guy is an unpretentious entertainer , a musician , a poet , a lyricist , & never a plagiarist .. Go Gordy !

Approaching 74, I heard Lightfoot for the first time what seems like a hundred years ago and yet...only yesterday. He wrote for the poet in all of us.
The words and arrangement of music is so great.
Thanks Gordon Lightfoot for releasing what you are into the NOW.
This made me cry - nostalgia for someone loved & lost. And I loved Gordon's music in the 70's.
So beautiful Gordon. Magical
Just saw him play this in Brown County Indiana the other night. 83 years young, it was magical

Sorry to hear you lost your soulmate. I've been a Lightfoot fan since 1966. I hope you get to see Gordon soon.
My favourite Lightfoot song. Thanks Gordon!
Gord wrote such heart wrenching poetry, and set it to music. His performances are on fire with the passion of music he treasures so deeply. No one else could tell these stories of tragedies, lost loves, and people.
A wonderful song from times now lost.

There'll never be another Gordon Ligfoot.
My wife and I were somewhere in that crowd when Gordon was singing this song here inReno. What a wonderful evening that was. I love all his music but this is one of my favorites.
This song is so nice. Makes me tear up.
I was lucky enough to see Gord at the Jubilee in Edmonton years ago. A quiet night of pure musical genious that I'll never forget.
I may have been at that same concert. Was it the Carefree Highway or the one before? He was a bit under the weather, as I recall but he soldiered on. He just amazes me how committed he his to his fans and the music. "I'd Rather Press On" is definitely his autobiography.
I don't understand the 57 dislikes how could you not like a song like this?
No one holds a candle to this man; simply perfection.
Amazing how similar his voice still sounds at his age. Keep serenading, Gordon!
🙏❤️ Rest in Peace Gordon Lightfoot🌹
wonderful-beautiful song. in makes me cry tears of joy, it captures the essance
of my heart - the essance of what it means to be human. gratitude. :-)
One of my favorite Canadians, I just love Gordon`s music.
He’s my favorite songwriter. God bless him.
