I dont care what anyone says..this is the nicest song he has written and he has written many. I know when he wrote this he was missing his wife because he told me so when I had the unique opportunity to have a one on one with him at the festival of lights in Peterborough in 2002 or thereabouts. I told him that I didn't think there was another artist alive that could make the MUSIC feel what the lyrics were saying quite like he does and he said to me"Brett, that is one of the nicest compliments I have ever got! After talking with him for a uninterrupted 1/2 hour I was 100,000 feet in the air because he is my hero of music.
Feeling the lyrics--a perfect marriage of heart, soul and mind. Indeed!! Gordon Lightfoot and his precious poetry and music have been part of my Canadian identity since I first heard him as a kid in the 60s. 🩷
Gordon is an all time legend. Arguably the best storyteller/singer/songwriter ever, along with Jim Croce for my two cents. As far as “feeling the lyrics” and conveying the emotion of a song through a voice, Bobby Darin is my all time favorite.
Tears of thanks for you Gordon. Somewhere in heaven today seated back against a tree, you are strumming a beautiful tune. Rest peacefully my Canadian friend.
Most certainly one of Gordon's greatest songs, and I don't see anything wrong with a thunderstorm in Cleveland being the inspiration for a song about a snowstorm in Canada. The great poets take their inspiration from everywhere and everything and everybody. RIP Voice of Canada.
Rest in peace, dear Gordon Lightfoot. This tune says it all for me. A master troubadour in words and melodies - thank God we have recordings to remember you by. 💔😢🇨🇦
This was always a favorite of mine. It took on new meaning as life went on, eventually becoming painful. I saw him perform this live in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, only months before his death. Just Gordon and three musicians. I experienced this alone. The bad news was that my own actions had sentenced me to remain alone to this day. The good news, slim as it was, was that it was easy to find a single seat than to find two. My seat was excellent. I fortunate, even in my profound sadness. I knew within my heart that she was not lonely too.
So true. Gives me goose bumps every time. Thanks for your evocative comment, Suzette Boulais. -- Mark B of the frozen North (just left a comment of my own)
Just watched a "younger" version of this. I must say that this is my favorite. A voice that mellowed and just grew through the years. There is no "style" like Mr. Lightfoot's. He is a balladeer above all. He is magic..
Growing up in the 60's and 70's I can think of a few song writers that were and some still are wonderful song writers. Gordon Lightfoot in my opinion is probably the greatest of them all, and if not, he's in great company with Bob McDill right there with him. As an American I really appreciate the sound and words in Gordon's songs. He has a voice you can recognize right off, and in some of the songs he wrote the words are like poetry themselves. Just listen to the first four lines of a Song for a Winters Night, it's brilliant writing. Who else writes like that? There's only one other person I believe who can deliver a song as well as Gordon Lightfoot and that's Don Williams. Mr. Williams did a fantastic version to "If You Could Read My Mind" and I believe honored Gordon very well by not changing it. Thank you Mr. Lightfoot for all your work. You sir are well loved throughout the world.
It's because the airwaves are completely saturated with Sarah Mclachlan's version. Which, unfortunately does not have the stoic delivery that is required for the song, and that Gord so eloquently executes.
I'm a ac/dc , lynyrd skynyrd, dude, and I will tell you, Gordon Lightfoot is the master, he wrote the words, the music, a very, very , talented, gifted guy, there will never be one like him, never has been, never will be.
The video for this song is just eye-candy, for a song that actually evokes a back-alley tenement, cheap apartment, maybe over a bar . . . in Montreal , Boston, or any old harbor town. The only other song that comes close is 'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen. Folk was a tough genre' to follow, once Dylan picked up that old Strat. ua-cam.com/video/K7NMvpZ3PM0/v-deo.html
Loved him since the 70s when my Father & I would listen together. Dad has been gone for almost 3 years now, but when I hear G.L it's like Dad and I are together again..
I think it’s the finest song ever wrote I got lucky enough to see him on a cold January night in Ottawa 1989 Thank you for a lifetime of songs this country will never forget you
I often listen to this beautiful song and think of my wife "Terry " of 47 years. She has been gone four years and listening a feeling I can not explain, somewhere between happy and sad. I just want to thank Mr. Lightfoot !
he marks an entire generation of music from the 60's and 70's. He will never be forgotten in history. People that aren't even born yet in 2022 will fall in love with his music. Pretty cool eh?
My mother used to play those early United Artists albums of his and this song was one of them - used to fall asleep as an 8 or 9 year old listening to those songs - magical
Dear Gordon Lightfoot, We share the same birthday - November 17. Hope yours was a good one. Thank you for all the beauty and joy your music has brought to me in my lifetime!
My church introduced me to this song. Last week, we had a concert and sang a number of his songs in tribute to a very talented Canadian. God bless you Mr. Gordon Lightfoot. We'll always remember you and will cherish you and your music forever. Lotas love to all from Toronto ♥♥♥
I love this song so much. It is unbelievably heartfelt. Gordon was a super- star in my eyes. Never had a chance to see him in concert but continue to listen to his concerts here and on CD's I have. Rest in peace for all time Gordon Lightfoot.
One of only two performers where I can recall where I was, who I was with and how I felt when I first heard them. I still get that feeling every time I hear Gordon Lightfoot.
Loved his music for over 50 years and whaddaya know - he still delivered like that! It's one thing to perform a tune with a lot of 'ways out' to detect perfection and it's entirely different to perform so quietly, so subtle, and still nail it. THX - to Toronto's own G.L.

Me have loved him long time now. so sad he has left us.
What a great song!
For me this is one of the best, if not the best, love song of all time. The version performed by a young GL is the best.
Tears of thanks for you Gordon. Somewhere in heaven today seated back against a tree, you are strumming a beautiful tune. Rest peacefully my Canadian friend.
Who Knows, might see him in the New World 😊😊
RIP Gordon. I’m shedding tears for you this morning…

Lightening and snowing no doubt...thats how it goes in that part of the world.

Gordon Lightfoot is a treasure indeed. Nothing else like him ever…
You are so right 😀

Not a single time have I heard this song and not experienced its sweet sorrow. It touches a chord deep, deep inside me.

Mine too !!!
Ditto. I could never find a better way to describe this man. Thanks!
Para mi. Este excelente compositor, guitarrista y cantante es lo mejor en música Canadiense. Y que me perdone Paul Anka.

God Bless you Gordon. RIP. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 😢🙏❤️
R.I.P. Gordon...don't know why radio stations don't play this during Christmas season every year.
It's because the airwaves are completely saturated with Sarah Mclachlan's version. Which, unfortunately does not have the stoic delivery that is required for the song, and that Gord so eloquently executes.

Perfect and good night to all.....be safe getting.......❤
I’m a southern boy who hates winter, snow, and the cold. But I could listen to this song anytime, and feel all of it was beautiful.
Canada's best. RIP Gordon.
I've always said that the 60s were the best american music ever.
Loved him since the 70s when my Father & I would listen together. Dad has been gone for almost 3 years now, but when I hear G.L it's like Dad and I are together again..
A Master of storytelling and emotion in song!

Pretty cool eh?
It could be summertime but listening to this wondrous song puts me in a winter cabin during winter up north in the middle of January.
I don't think I have heard anyone, that can deliver a love song like this man. I have seen him 6 times, here in Canada and never tire of his talent.
Agreed! But I'm a little jealous...I've only got to see him 4 times....in green Bay. True Fan!
Ha still sounds great!
I have seen him three times in toronto ontario at Massey hall treesa
Saw him once. Absolutely love his music. 👌❤️
Saw him in Nashville, TN. Great live performer.

This song really hits home when I'm sitting in our cabin in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan during a snow storm!
The UP!
That's exactly what I imagine when I hear it. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪👍
Yes! A Yooper forever, even though I left at 22 some 45 years ago, after graduating from Michigan Tech. Always loved Lightfoot.

I nearly wore my LP out playing this track so much. xxx
I wore out 2 or 3 Gord's Gold cassettes out. Hearing this song live is awesome.
Nothing changes among the great singers. As fine as 40 years ago
My church introduced me to this song. Last week, we had a concert and sang a number of his songs in tribute to a very talented Canadian. God bless you Mr. Gordon Lightfoot. We'll always remember you and will cherish you and your music forever. Lotas love to all from Toronto ♥♥♥
Proudly Canadian...love those songs...did back then, do now, always will!
Fabulous ❤
Always loved this song...the lyrics & the musicality! But I think of the dark cold bitter nights in Canada...brrrr! Oh for the love of summer!!!
Could one ever tire of listening to Gordy?
+racketman2u Nope.
Never, pure class as we say in Ireland.
TheSamoht67 my background is also Irish. Both parents born there.
What a Talented Singer n Songwriter.
How nice of him to take the time to explain the setting of the song before playing the song. Not a lot of musicians do that in concert!
such a beautiful song! Such great Canadian images!
Love that voice. Miss you, Mr. Lightfoot.
What a gift. Gorden lightfoot is in a class all his own. Our Canadian troubadour.
RIP Gordon. A true legend.
Can't get enough of classic Gordon lightfoot so warm and cosy in front of a fireplace with some wine or beer cheers 👍 🌺🍁💐🎸🎼🍺🍷🍹🍺

Gordon Lightfoot is an international treasure. Canada 🇨🇦 is lucky to have him. My Mom is from Windsor Nova Scotia, very special people.
a wonderul voice!
This is a Gordon Lightfoot song I was previously unaware of. It is indeed a good one.
Loved his music for over 50 years and whaddaya know - he still delivered like that! It's one thing to perform a tune with a lot of 'ways out' to detect perfection and it's entirely different to perform so quietly, so subtle, and still nail it. THX - to Toronto's own G.L.
Troubadour of the ages. We were blessed to have him for a time!
