My husband used to sing this song and Gordon Lightfoot's "Beautiful" to me, playing the guitar so beautifully. He has passed on, but these songs bring him back to me....
The most beautiful love song ever written. As a young man I wished to find a girl who filled the longing this song brought me. Fifty years have now passed in a life of seventy years, I never found her and know I never will. Once, briefly, I was certain she was in my life but it didn’t last. Still I am thankful for her and our fleeting time together. I sincerely hope you find a person who thoughts of brings you warmth on a deep and lonely winter’s night. If you are young please don’t settle for less, please keep your heart open and let your love find them. They are searching for you as you are them.
❤ I was so blessed to find my late husband. I had a love before him, too. I was doubly blessed. Both are gone from my life now , at 70 I have wonderful memories of them both. Who knows what life has in store , don't give up on ❤
Beautifully written by Gordon Lightfoot and MAGNIFICENTLY PERFORMED By SARAH McLACHLAN ! SO INCREDIBLE This Cover.... Thank You SARAH for your AWESOME VERSION ! ! ! ❤
I've lost my granddaughter, daughter and son-in-law to covid-19. This song is so beautiful, brings tears to my eyes. 😢. I just wish I could hold them once more.
@@ctmoss2290 thanks so very much ❤️🌈🙏. I'm so sorry for your lost as well. I hope 2021 is a better year for you and everyone in the world 🌍 God bless you and your family 🙏. Peace ✌️ and safety.
My Second Christmas without my wife who passed in February 2022. Miss her every day. Will love her until I take my last breath. Song reminds me of her. Tears in my eyes.
Hauntingly beautiful. Reminds me of my son, Vincent, who passed away when he was only 25, after a lift long battle against Cystic Fibrosis. I miss you my baby
Just listening to this again as I do each Christmas season...it moves me to tears and I believe it's my favorite song of all time. I love both renditions of it. Of course Gordon's but she does it so methodically and poignant. Beautiful!
My first reaction when I saw this post was that this is one person who I was confident would do Gordon's lyrics and melody justice. She would treat the beauty with respect and make him proud. She did not disappoint. Lovely Sarah.
Second best to Lightfoot's beautiful. Who hasn't loved and lost, and how do you get past, "I read again between the lines upon each page, the words of love you sent me." Heart-rending, for anyone who has lived that. Beautiful at Christmas or all through the year. Gordon paints such pictures in my mind, always has. Sarah does it justice.
i played on repeat as a single mom cuz it touched my heart and spoke Truth somehow someway ... now my adult daughter sings/plays on her guitar on her first EP album .... they get it when they do 🤍
The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top The snow is softly falling The air is still in the silence of my room I hear your voice softly calling If I could only have you near To breathe a sigh or two I would be happy just to hold the hands I love On this winter’s night with you The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead My glass is almost empty I read again between the lines upon each page The words of love you sent me If I could know within my heart That you were lonely too I would be happy just to hold the hands I love On this winter’s night with you The fire is dying My lamp is growing dim The shades of night are lifting The morning light steals across my window pane Where webs of snow are drifting If I could only have you near To breathe a sigh or two I would be happy just to hold the hands I love On this winter’s night with you And to be once again with you
You have to hear Gordon's version on the gords gold album. It was my husbands and I s favourite. He has alzheimers now but it will always be our song. 😭
When I was a baby my mom would hold me and sing this song to me and play it, now we always sing it together and, I hope one day I can sing it with my future wife, and to my future kids if I have any.
I agree with you. I lost my two daughters and grandchildren to covid-19 💔😢. I'm so heartbroken. If I could only see them again to tell them I love them again 😢💔😢💞
@@deborahbertone9460 your comment brought tears to my eyes. So sorry for your heartbreaking loss. May the memories you have of you loved ones hold you up when you feel you can't go on. Peace to you, where ever you are. And know someone else is crying with you.
This song gives me so much nostalgia because at Christmas my mum would always play this album on our CD stereo system. Can't believe this song is 22 years old.
Almost a year ago, my ballet teacher choreographed a dance to this song that my ballet class did. That’s how I figured out about this song. I have now moved so I don’t go to the same dance studio anymore. Whenever I hear this song, I get so much memories from when we did the dance to this song.
It's been three years since my dear Julie passed.. this passage fits so proper... If I could only have you near To breathe a sigh or two I would be happy just to hold the hands I love On this winter's night with you🙏
I love this song to death and will listen to it on repeat, but damn it, it's also the only song that consistently makes me wish I wasn't single at Christmas!
I have Lightfoot's first album and many others. I am just relearning this song and found this great cover. The comments below prove that you can't please everybody. They of course are entitled to dislike it as it is just a matter of taste. Sarah and Gord make Canada proud.
How can you people say that this is a crapy cover. Man I get it, no one on here has been thinking of some one that they've lost or longed for in the winter time? Wow, I'm a rare breed. Some just haven't lived long enough, or suffered. Sad really. Anyway the song's the bomb.

For everyone who is missing someone this Christmas , this song captures that in words and melody.

Such a beautiful song. It gives me comfort when I miss my loved ones that are spending Christmas in heaven. So inspiring.
This achingly beautiful rendition of one of Gordy's BEST songs, always brings tears to my eyes....in both good and bad ways.
There are so many good cover's of this beautiful song. Sarah's version is still my favorite.

I'll always love this song because of Debbie.
To someone I thought I knew a long time ago.

Yeah it is the bomb by Gordon Lightfoot she moans a lot of her stuff , this included .
Laura Powell Yeah that’s what ultimately turned me off McLacan. It was cool in the beginning but then all her singing became the same.
Didn't know it was one, but, it's beautiful.
I do love her voice, but she is definitely "moaning" a bit much in this one. There's nothing like the original in this case.
This is my perfect winter sentiment, good or bad, mostly bad and sad
Nice...Gords' is still my favorite version.
Merry Christmas....Annie :)
Amezing song romantic
PeAce in her voice
I think she gives more, Be who you are. No more no less
Maybe it was a dream, but when I heard your song,I didn't want to wake up.
Amo esta música!
Love this version of the Gordon Lightfoot classic.
