You are not alone in buying art products that just sit around waiting to be used. You did excellent for not having painted with this medium 🎉
I'm usually not too bad at doing at least a bit of art with new materials, but just not these for some reason! Thanks!
You made it look so beautiful and yet effortless at the same time!
You have such a calming voice as well. Bravo! ❤
Thank you! I shall inform my family of this! 😉
i remember recieving a few tubes of these for free from my school way back when and i never liked oil painting so i avoided them for the longest- maybe its about time for me to try them out again, too!
I'd definitely give them another shot!!
Speaking of glass & water soluble oil paints... I'm betting they'll be fantastic for monoprints! I used to.mix inks, acrylics & watercolors on a large glass from an old picture frame then do monotype prints on them. The results were absolutely stunning. Especially for abstract backgrounds on WC paper for the WC portraits I was working on at the time.
Oh no... I know nothing about monoprinting, but it sounds like something I may have to investigate! Is it going to be another rabbit hole I fall down?!
THIS IS SOOOOO PERFECT FOR ME!!!! I’ve been nodding my head and have been wanting to try it out! I, too, was afraid to use them but for health reasons. So now I’m right here with you. LET’S GO!!! 💃🏻
That's great! I'm so glad!
Awesome demo! Thank you! Just started painting with them and you really helped me a lot.
Thanks! I'm really glad!
LOVE!!! omg I have found my tribe! I also bought oil a few years ago, but I haven’t even swatched mine. You encourage me. Thank you for keeping it real. It is always REAL Fun! Diana xoxo
Thanks Diana! I definitely hope you (and everyone else!) have got them out to play with too!
Thanks Helen for an enjoyable and absorbing watch- water soluble oil paint s - who knew?
Thanks! Yes - can't even remember how I came across them now!
Received a trial set of the Cobra water mixable oils in an art subscription box once. They have become my favorites to use. There a combination of the best qualities of acrylics and oils. In terms of usability and versatility. Although you do have to make sure to gesso what ever surfaces you're using.
Do you know if the Cobra ones differ much from the Artisan ones?
The Cobras are the only ones that I've tried so far.
Whatever medium you try you always make beautiful art with it, this video has blown my mind! Not only beautiful art but hearing about water soluble oil paints!! I’ve wanted to try oils but I’m put off by the chemicals. Now I can try. Thank you for another interesting and inspiring video x
Thank you so much! They do them in a range of starter sets I think, and they mix beautifully, so you'd only need a few. They do still smell a bit themselves, but obviously no solvents are needed.
Hi Helen , your versatility is truly staggering . If you ever find yourself with a couple of hours to spare , my lounge is crying out for a splash of paint , I have the necessary B&Q emulsion all ready . Thanks for this vid , Mike in Exeter xx
I think the key is just buying far too many different mediums, and using them all the same way (splodging them on)!
My husband would not recommend me. He went to work one day and came home to a seaside mural in the hallway and up the stairs 😁
@@helencryerfabulous 😁
This was so fun to watch! You got lovely results on a first try - the textures and color blending is just so pretty. I love what oils can do but they weren’t an option due to asthma. Might check these out somewhere down the road if they’re not as pungent as regular oils.
Thank you! I haven't used regular oils to be able to compare the odour I'm afraid. These do smell, but it doesn't seem very strong to me.
I have a similar problem and this paint is the mildest for fumes, though I still wear a mask.
I love oils! It’s like oil pastels but with a lot more control. The biggest annoyances with them are the terpenoids and such that require ventilation. But they blend better than acrylics you can do a lot more with them because of the extended drying time and you don’t waste paint because it takes so long to dry out. And it avoids that plasticy effect acrylic has. I’ve never tried water based oils so I can’t say how they compare to what you’re trying here unfortunately but I’ve been told they can be mixed with regular oils. I have so many regular oils that it doesn’t make sense for me to buy the water soluble ones. But if I were just starting out I would give them a go first to avoid all the fumes.
I can't believe it's taken me so long to get round to them! I can definitely see all the benefits you say in these, but obviously I don't know if they're as good as traditional oils. I certainly like these though!
@@helencryer yay! I noticed when you were painting that you’re approaching them like you would watercolors, tending to go from light to dark and working in sections, one of the best things about oils is kind of getting to work on the whole scene at once. You may want to try giving the whole area a background color and put in the mid tones or even darks and work up to lights. I don’t know if it will make a big difference for using oils but this past year I started going from oils to watercolor and the switch in approach is definitely needed in that direction so it might be worth trying for the oils 🤷🏻♀️.(Approaching watercolors like oils makes everything a muddy mess and it took me a while to figure out why I hated watercolors so much and why it didn’t work for me, it was because I went into it like I do with oils, 😂 oops!) You probably don’t need to change anything you’re doing but I think it helps keep the lighter colors less muddy at the very least. But I thought I’d mention it just in case it can help. I’m glad you’re loving the oils! 😊
Gosh, I didn’t even know water mixable oils were a thing! That was so interesting to watch & such beautiful results. I don’t think I could cope with them at the moment but it’s definitely planted a little seed! Thanks 😊
Yes! They definitely make for an interesting proposition at some point!
I bought a tube of one of these by mistake a while back. I haven't used it but I'm watching your video to see how they handle. It was a very informative video from that point of view, as the small paintings you did really showed well how it handled. They look like a pretty decent alternative to traditional oils.
Thanks - glad it was useful, not that I've used traditional oils.
Excellent!
this is gorgeous ❤❤❤
Thanks!
I have had these for quite few years, unopened as cats and oils are not compatible. I have been using golden open instead….I used to use oils almost exclusively and miss them so this is encouragement now my poor old moggy is no longer with us… really nice to see you using them and hearing your first impressions. 😊
Aww, sorry about your cat!! Hopefully you can get them out soon! I'd love to hear how you think they compare with traditional oils.
Yey Helen, I purchased the W and N Artisan about a month ago....i too havent used them yet, or even swatched them....once i finsih my project i'm working on at moment i too will get to it x Thank u for sharing and I'm looking forward to seeing u create more with the Artisan x love Alli XXX
Ooo - fun! I hope you love them too!
I will let u know but im sure i will helen xxx@@helencryer
Your little paintings are just beautiful. I especially like the one with the dunes and grass. The textures you created are amazing. So well done for your first go! I hope we see a lot more oil paintings in the future.
I bought a few tubes of water mixable oils quite a while ago but haven't tried them yet. I can't even remember what brand they are. 😆 I'm looking forward to trying them now.❤
Thanks ever so much! There seem to be quite a few of us in the same boat! I hope you really enjoy trying them out!
I'm always afraid to try oil painting because I feel that I'll love it but I don't have space to paint with them 😅 I'm glad to see that you enjoyed them and can't wait to see your future paintings 🥰🥰🥰 your second painting espacially turned out gorgeous 😍
It definitely takes a bit of space when it's out drying, but I think my genuine enjoyment using them will make up for it! Thanks!
Initially, since I am not a fan of oil paints, I didn't think I'd enjoy this video. However, as I saw the sunset painting develop and the details emerge, I was pleasantly surprised. It came out beautifully! The seascape developed just as wonderfully, I have to admit you changed my mind. Keep up the great work!
Haha, thanks! I was actually surprised just how much I enjoyed them!
Thank you for a great video! I’ve been thinking about trying water mixable oils and didn’t know where to start; your video is very helpful.
I'm really pleased, thank you!
That looks like fun… it was fun to watch you experiment with them! I have never been tempted by any form of oil paints. They scare me 😂. You made out really well with them, those little paintings are lovely!
I think it's the layerability I like about them, and they just seemed so much nicer to work with than acrylics.
@@helencryer Don’t make them sound too appealing, I am NOT investing in another medium, no matter how amazing it is 😂.
I have felt the same way, but watching Helen play with them I might just give them a go.
I received some paints of this type a few years ago, but like you, having never used oils before, I left them alone. Can you please tell us how you cleaned your brushes after use?
I wiped off the excess paint on paper towel, and rinsed the brushes in water, same as I would with acrylics.
So beautiful! I got a small set of these for Christmas last year and haven't tried them yet. Your work gives me some inspiration!
Have a play! They're lovely to use!
Omg, now I think I need some water mixable oil paints😂 They do look interesting though and I love watching you not being afraid to try out new things. Your miniature paintings turned out beautifully❤️
🤣 You sound as easily swayed as me!!
@@helencryer happy it's not just me😂
Love them Helen, well done....i could feel that u really were excited/inspired while painting...I fear we might need another tube of white quite quickly lol X love Alli XXX
Yes, I definitely was! I actually thought that while I was painting - about needing more Titanium White!
great minds Helen lol X have a happy painting day x@@helencryer
What a good job for not working with them before. I always notice your skies. Sometimes you manage to create a sky that's so wild and lively. I've been trying to recreate what I see you doing to no avail. But I'll keep trying. I have some oils, but have only worked with them a very little bit. Like you, they intimidate me a bit.
Thanks so much! I guess we're all just figuring out what works best for us individually!
I love painting in oils. Wonderful little test paintings you did and pleased you liked them. Maybe see a few oil paintings by you in the future, hehe! 🖌🎨
Thank you! I definitely hope so!
You've got quite a collection.
I'm always a bit OTT I'm afraid!
What a great gift from your past self! Haha. Oil paints feel scary to me too, so you are definitely not alone there
I like your way of looking at it!
Well that was interesting, I didn't even know these existed. I've always been put off oils because of all the fuss around them but I may have a go with these. I hope you'll do some more demos with them, perhaps some plein air? I feel they are definatley worth looking into more closely. Are they similar to acrylics to use?
I can't even remember how I came across them! They don't feel a million miles different from professional quality acrylics - being quite firm and very pigmented. Thicker than mid-range acrylics though. I don't have enough experience to comment further though.
I doubt I'll use them for plein air, I'm afraid, due to their slow drying time.
Thank you, i got three oil paints to start with and didn't even notice they were 'water mixable' until i got home . i've been to confused to try them out.
That's great then! You can just have a play with water!
Ooooh, nice crisp edges! You don't always get that with watercolour. I do like the idea of having more control I guess. I've now just popped a Winsor and Newton set of 20 12ml water soluble oils on my Amazon wishlist and will watch the price over the next few months. Considering you've never worked with oils before I absolutely loved your finished pieces. I think that they would sell really well as original pieces at your art market. People like to pay a premium for original pieces. Surprised you haven't done more of the oils, or maybe I just haven't happened upon those vids yet. Cheers from Australia.
Thanks! I've done a couple since this video, with them, I just get distracted by other mediums all the time!
I hope you can get some at a decent price!
@@helencryer cheers 👍🏻
That was interesting! I think I'd like to have a play but not something I would invest in at the mo. I have to start using what I have! 😂 Lovely little paintings!
Hope you're feeling a bit better, and getting closer to doing some painting!!
Thankyou Helen - I’ve got a stash of the same water mixable oil paints too - also, neglected! 🙄 This was very encouraging to watch and loved the expressive brush marks - lovely result ❤ Have you used them since? I find with so much choice of different great media, it’s really hard to actually choose what to do next - product and information overload 😉
I haven't used them again yet - though mainly because I've been busy or away. I really do want to get to them again, as I enjoyed them so much! I totally relate to this though!
I’ve bought a few of those paints but haven’t used them yet. My mom was a great oil painter but i never liked them because it took so much stuff to use. I think the water soluble ones will be better. Thx for your video!
Hope you get them out soon and have some fun with them!
I’ve heard that oils don’t shift in colour when they dry the way acrylics do. If that’s trie it does make oils appealing. I kinda want to try them
I've heard that too, but can't really tell, as they haven't properly dried yet.
Wow, what beautiful miniature oil paintings! (I can see them in fancy frames on the walls of a very high class dolls house haha). How long did the paint take to dry fully? I remember trying oils (once) as a teenager, it was just a very cheap set, but I didn’t have patience to wait for it to dry and kept touching it to check!
I love that thought! They take as long as normal oils, I think. A day later, the thin areas of painting are touch dry, but the slightly thicker areas are still tacky. The paints on my glass palette are still wet.
For your little landscapes did you mix all the colours with the linseed oil or just straight colour? Love your videos!!
Thanks! At the very beginning I used linseed,, but then I was finding there was enough liquid just from the water on my rinsed-out-and-dabbed-on-a-paper-towel-dried brush.
Can you use linseed oil with water soluble oils? When the linseed oil in the paint is a converted product that accepts water?
In the leaflet it says that 'Artisan has its own specially developed range of Oils, Mediums, Varnishes and a Thinner.' I don't know how they are different from normal oils though. Out of curiosity I mixed some Artisan paint with non-Artisan oil, and it did dissolve into it smoothly and easily.
Wow,these look like great fun, something else I want to try now!! Oh the temptation!! but no,think I better learn to walk and not run with the watercolours first before trying the oils!!! 😆😂
Haha, sorry about that! I just have a very short attention span!
😂…..me too,but must resist the temptation 🤪
Well if you don't manage it, primaries and Titanium White will do you fine!
Am checking them out now! Sales are on at the moment! It has to be done 😂😂😂
🤣
I have a question-my daughter found a w & n set like the same ne you have but some of the tubes are hard. Can you still use them?
It sounds like they've dried up in the tubes, so probably not. Are they rock solid, or are you able to squidge them around inside the tubes a bit - could you maybe massage a bit out? If so you could thin it down with water or oil.
So are they quick drying?
They are supposed to be the same as regular oil paints. I've not used regular oils, so I can't corroborate that, but they seem quite slow drying so far.
@@helencryer Thanks!
🐨👍
Does it have any odor at all?
Yes, definitely some odour, but not very strong.
👋🏼
Hi! I see you're not out on your BMX doing stunts with your mates tonight then?!
@@helencryer😂😂
This medium looks interesting. I have not experimented with oils because they're so opaque & requires very good artistic skills unlike line & wash where wonky lines & uncontrolled WC does the work for the artist 🎨 🤷 I've seen untrained artists do magnificent art w ink & watercolor. Then try oils & have mediocre results to put it nicely. Unless you're going for an abstract impressionist genre. Basquiat, Monet, Van Gogh. I find oil paintings a bit boring. But that's just me. Perhaps this particular oil paint could have more interesting results.
I think the results will be fairly similar to regular oils. I'd like ultimately to aim for very loose, almost abstract landscapes. I think some people would argue that watercolour is harder though! Either way, mediocrity doesn't scare me too much 😁
