Oh my gosh.. im pausing because... Thank you!! Ive strugggled to edit my black pencil skirts.. i have multiples.. but they are in various lengths, weights, fabrics, slightly variated.. and i love them! They are my favorite wardrobe item!! Ive decluttered a few but have regretted it.. i keep adding them when i find them.. i also have multiple striped button downs but they are all different!!! Ive decluttered them as well and tegret it because i wear/ wore them but because ive watched so many edit your closet videos i started to believe i shouldnt have so many.. anyway.. yes! Who is the internet to tell me i have too many!! Thanks Alyssa!
aw i'm so glad this was helpful to you xx
Yes, for me it’s black pants! I have many, each a different style, shape, fabric and I wear them all the time in different outfits and for varied occasions. I just declutter those that no longer fit.
My self-soothers…food, makeup, costume jewelry, shoes, clothes. I have not yet mastered the balance with food. It has taken me years (about 5years) to learn my way through decluttering my wardrobe. I have made many mistakes and learned from them. I like blue, so my closet has tons of blue in it and I don’t feel bad about it. I just find the shades of blue I think look best on me and that goes for any color I add in. Do I look at makeup, jewelry, shoes and clothes anyway. Of course but I have become so good at finding the right fit I now rarely donate or give away anything. I am at the last stages of selecting all my handbags (adding at least 2 more) and that feels really good. I donated a small black bag and a small red bag and realized I need bigger versions of these two colors. ❤ I am now going to work on using your tips when adding food into my day…asking the why. 😔 Thank you, your tips go beyond the wardrobe whether you realize it or not. ❤❤❤❤❤ 😊
Same here with black skirts.
Though this summer, I've managed to declutter one because the lycra is gone. 😊
Yes! It kind of drives me nuts to see some youtubers say you don't need multiples of stuff like...basic white or black t-shirts, or a white button down, or jeans. Girl WHAT? If those are staple items that you wear as a base piece in your wardrobe all the time, why wouldn't you have multiples?! If it's something you know you wear constantly, multiples are actually a good thing!
I have lived a long time (72yrs) loving clothes! I sorely regret getting rid of clothes bought during my 20's and 30's as they were either vintage from the 30's 40's made out of exceptional fabrics or from designers who became iconic (Mary Quant, Biba, Ossie Clark). Luckily, I held on to a couple of YSL pieces from the 70's. I never imagined that quality fabrics would become a rarity otherwise I would have kept everything I owned and had them re-purposed! With that in mind, I no longer get rid of anything that is well crafted in beautiful fabrics. If one day I want to wear them again, I reckon that I can re-purpose. Also, if I come across a beautiful piece that I fall in love with, I buy it! What I love has always fitted into my wardrobe. My style is classic with a twist, so the love bombs are often the "twist" that keeps on giving. I would say that having a wardrobe that fits your lifestyle is key. Now retired, living in a seaside location, I need lovely sleep and home wear. Great summer and beach outfits, in addition to a couple of capsule wardrobes to cover spring, autumn, winter in european cities. Your video has been great food for thought. Thank you so much for you continual inspiration!!
I'm glad you kept some treasures from the past and have a keen eye when you find others. These are wise words, and I imagine you are beautifully and uniquely well-dressed. Brava!
As an actual life-long writing editor, culling a closet is EXACTLY the same: focusing the 'main idea,' removing 'unnecessary wording,' streamlining. It's all about streamlining and a clear focus.
AND, as with one's writing, there is most often an emotional element involved, why we don't want to let go of wording, phrasing, or an idea that 'doesn't fit' with the 'whole'.
What an excellent analogy you've offered! ❤
thank you for this :)
I own multiples of the exact same pieces sometimes. Not different colours even. Exact same duplicates. And I love it, because those are my favourites and this makes them last longer and I can wear the same style more often. I don't regret it :)
Another consideration is the remorseless race to the quality bottom. I rehomed a number of pieces during the pandemic that I wish now that I'd just taken to the tailor for a style refresh. I'd thought so blithely "oh I'll just buy a new one that's more current," but when we were free to mingle in public again - I was shocked by how crap the quality of literally everything had gotten. Synthetic winter coats that won't keep you warm or dry; things now unlined that need to be lined to be durable and hang right; silk pieces with shoddy overlocked seams already fraying etc etc. Long story short: if the main reason you're editing is that something isn't "in style" maybe put it in storage for a season or two. Can it be tailored? Once the piece is gone, it's gone and you may not be able to replace it with something you can really live with.
I do agree. HOWEVER i have pieces that i might not wearfor a season or two and then i go back and pick them up again. That said i never ever ever worry About saying goodbuy to clothes i dont like anymore. They just go🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you. I cannot relate to your videos very often because I’m not a minimalist. This one however, made a lot of practical sense to me. Thank you.
I have a blouse that I really love but always wore it a certain way. This year I have lost a LOT of weight and the only clothing that fit were my socks! I had to declutter and purchase new things. I kept the old blouse because it’s an easy alter to bring the size down and knowing this I kept on reaching for it to see if it would work with the new size me. Each time it would go back into the hold section, I was stuck. I was surfing youtube looking putting outfits together and saw a similar blouse styled a way I hadn’t considered with trousers I have in my closet. My beautiful altered blouse has lovely old memories and new ones. I get compliments on my new blouse and no one realises it’s my old blouse because of how I style it. So if you are having a hard time integrating an item do a search of how others are wearing it. Thank you for your videos ❤
Thank you for posting. Guilt and shame about letting things go, about money spent on this you do not use or wear can become such huge obstacles to overcome and become so overwhelming that you just turn away from the closet clutter. Learning to accept yourself, to admit the money is already spent and that it's OK to let go are all such wonderful tools in the battle between mind over matter....Thank you for these positive reminders!
Love your message here. A well-edited closet does take time but is so worth the effort. My closet now feels like a boutique and brings me joy instead of anxiety. Thank you so much, Alyssa!
My black blazer collection:
A thick heavy wool blend for winter
a black faux leather blazer
a bog standard midweight (polyester) blazer - mostly worn for funerals
a tweedy black blazer - mostly worn for evenings in the winter
a black linen blazer for summer, especially good for travelling in as it's lightweight and doesn't show the dirt!
All serve a different purpose.
In my closet and in my life I always use this "algorithm":
1. start bold (like get rid of all the clothes you don't like) and then
2. improve it day by day, consciously
To do that:
Understand where you're heading. Learn from your mistakes (or others mistakes), take time to have some reflection.
There is this philosophy Kaizen, take small steps to improve.
I have the feeling either you know it Alyssa or just reinvented it (this is me also: I find out what I was doing was described 😊)
Love ❤
And... It I don't feel like bold I run something like "first try", to get to know what next
Consistency, intentionality & reflection are great for editing our closets… and our lives! Also enjoy being part of the Studio Community… love your white blouse, too!😉
Thank you for being part of the community Miki! You said it so well! xx
I keep a bag for donations of things that I want to give to someone who needs them. It feels good to release pieces of clothing or other items that I don't use. The stuff goes to a Free Store that helps refugees and other folks who really need these things. No guilt. Just a sense of helping others.
Another source one can consider donating to is a woman's shelter that even appreciate (gently used) undergarments.
This really resonated with me. I have a few pieces that I haven’t been able to part with although they no longer fit, are not bra friendly, or just don’t go with my personal style which is classic elegance. These pieces create noise in my closet. I’m going to segregate these pieces starting today! Thank you so very much. I love your channel. You are doing great work!
Instead of the black blazer that you used as an example, I have 4 faux leather black jackets which might sound excessive, but they each have different proportions and are unique. I enjoy each of them. I enjoy your videos on editing and elements of style.❤
I think denim jackets are similar. I have different washes, lengths, vibes, etc and I reach for them often. I rarely remove one from my closet unless I find I never reach for it.
I can relate! I love jackets and coats! I have several black faux and real leather jackets. They are all different and I love them all! I look forward to cooler days when I can wear my jackets or coats! I was thinking that maybe I needed to get rid of some of them, but they are all different, weights, lengths, styles and functions. I love that I can throw a jacket and/or coat over something simple and change the look! Thank you for the validation.
On shopping to self soothe: after experiencing my first earthquake in San Jose CR, I immediately went out and bought 3 pairs of shoes!
This video is just what I needed after listening to your excellent podcast SUSTAIN THIS of April 23rd titled “Is it a “fit” or is it just Pinterest? Why your outfits never look like the inspo photo”. I’ve been taking those lost leaders in my closet and finding new ways to wear them by figuring out what I can wear with them so that they emit a certain feeling I want to exude. Your numerous tips on how Pinterest can help me figure this out has been so helpful. Now, if something doesn’t feel like it can work with other pieces I already have and if it doesn’t makes me feel really good about what I see in the mirror, then it needs to find a new home. That podcast has forever changed how I look at the clothes I already have in my closet, duplicates or not (and I do have a number of duplicates!). Thank you to you, Signe and Christina. 😊
Today you helped me make a number of difficult decisions - I ended up parting with trousers and skirts, which I was keeping “just in case they will fit one day” and I feel lighter. 😅 My friend who will potentially like at least some of these, will be glad, and so will the environment 😊I also tried on some styling options and I found a few new and fresh ideas when shopping my own closet! You are an inspiration. Thank you, Alyssa😊
Wow thank you for sharing:) grateful to be a part of it dx
I'm totally with you on the idea of being my own editor as I go along. Gone are the days of big thrift hauls and big declutters for this style enthusiast. It's all about intentionality and a slower pace.
My huge collection of black blazers thanks you ......i always feel so guilty many of them are secondhand and I wear them all! 😂😅
Totally agree that big declutters aren’t the best solution most of the time 👍
I like the recommendation of putting out items that are hard to style. It is a visual reminder why they don’t belong in the rotation. I have items I love but hardly wear for various reasons. I almost always ended up returning them (shoes especially). I don’t take down tags and always keep my receipts for future return.
Thank you for this video, I’ve never felt comfortable with the idea of declutterring in a short period of time. Will definitely use the idea of keeping those unsure items in view, maybe it will be a good surprise
so glad it was helpful xx
I love your insights about editing our closet. It is less overwhelming than other decluttering advices and journaling about the why is a good idea. Thank you
I really like the idea of being the editor of my closet
I have learned a lot about myself just watching your videos. I really appreciate the viewpoint and help in understanding the methods of making clothing choices.
thank you so much that means a lot :) xx
I ordered AG1 thought it was a little expensive. 3 days in I could feel the difference and taste was good. Will keep using it.
Ahhh I'm so glad you like it - I tend to allocate more budget to things like nutrition and health!
I’ve become more mindful of my purchases, and your content has contributed to this awareness. By the way, the soft pink blouse looks beautiful on you❤
YAY! I'm the first comment!! We use the Rode microphones too. I have had to downsize so much because we live full time in our RV. I feel I can still get rid of more.🙃 But we got rid of so much, that I do have some emotional attachment to what I have left. -Michelle
Thanks for sharing Michelle xx
@@AlyssaBeltempo I always enjoy your videos! 😊
thank you so much for this video. I am going to try all of the tips about editing your closet. I am one of the people how declutter their closet twice a year, but always got overwelmd by the task, getting frustreted en tired. I never knew there was a other way, till now.
Great video, Alyssa! Love the idea of having a rail/space for maybe items.
Tip number four was invaluable! This was a great video. Thank you!
All good ideas. Regular reviews & garments straight into the give/sell/donate bags is what I do. Need to do it more. often than
thank youf or watching!
Love this video and agree with everything you’ve said.
You offer very useful ideas. I have been sorting through items I have not worn and hanging them in a separate closet. I occasionally look at them and wonder why I purchased them in the first place and if I can utilize them at all. I did "save" a pair of black linen shorts and actually wore them a few times already this summer. Thanks for your wisdom.
Thank you !As always very helpful and motivating advice.
I'm so glad you liked it thank you for watching xx
Excellent ALWAYS❤
Merci beaucoup tu as toujours de bons conseils!❤
Thank You! I needed this advice right now. I love you style and sensibility 😘😻
Please consider making a video focused on duplicates. Like many others in the comments I have struggled with the duplicate issue when decluttering AND when making purchases. When I find a perfect jean, I always want to buy two pair, although I am concerned that it may make my wardrobe boring. Oh, but wait: could duplicates be part of a “confident, pulled together uniform”? I want to have fewer, nicer things. Can múltiples ever be part of this strategy? I have six white t-shirts!
Im listen you and doing decluttering in my kitchen 😂❤
Great approach.
thank you for watching xx
You look fabulous in this top🎉 this color suits you so well
Enjoyed this content! (btw, Did you see that Birkenstock is opening its first company-owned store in Paris, France 'nestled in the heart of Paris’ historic Marais district? Maybe they eventually break the style barrier.)
I am constantly editing. It's a continuous ongoing process. At this point with shoes that if I get a new pair I need to get rid of pair. If there is nothing to get ride of then maybe I don't need a new pair of shoes.
what about pieces that hold sentimental value. Like a piece of clothing that used to belong to my late mother or my late sister? How do you let go of those if you are not wearing them?
I’m going to go back to decluttering as I peruse my closet. I need to get that box out again and ask those hard questions. There’s no way I can do it all at once
Great video, but missed seeing your kitty! :)
Thank you for this. I have mutiple black trousers and black cami. I just change my blazer or button down for work. I think it became my uniform. So mutiple is a must for me for certain items. Btw, I also like your top. Where is it from? Thank you in advance.
it's vintage!
Amazing video, thank you!
Thank you. ❤
And, my black blazers and boots , say …. Whew
Vielen lieben Dank und Grüße aus Deutschland 🇩🇪
Your style. 👌
Please tell me you bought that taupe long sleeved balloony crop top at about 2.3 mins in. Stunning on you!!
aw I did not! but it was really cool!
@@AlyssaBeltempo it was cool but i have the feeling that it was ok not to buy it...or wear differently. What do you think, Alyssa?😃😎
How do you get such white and pretty theet? 👌
what type of jeans are you wearing?
agolde!
❤
Very interesting. Your shirt? It is perfect for you.
it's vintage! Than you!
Weeks ago I was hoping she would answer where a dress was from in her video.
Why does she not give that information unless she’s making money off it? Unless it’s sponsored content, she won’t say.
She often tells us, but it's usually from a thrift shop so probably not that helpful to you.
Also, the focus of her videos isn’t ’where to buy these items’. It’s ’how to achieve these looks using similar items you may already have - or can thrift.’
Great question - I'm not able to catch all questions in the comments, and I don't usually share where I get my items from because they are either very old, or thrifted. Primarily though, the purpose of my channel is mostly to help you generate ideas to shop your closet vs. buying something - I hope this helps make sense!
I have noticed your labels show through some of your clothing why don’t you cut them out 😉
I wish that we could also talk more about what to do with the edited things. The risk of this approach is over editing, heightened consumption, and more clothes in landfill. Not everything is prone to be donated, exchanged, returned or sold.
100% this is another big topic altogether!
The *why before you buy* for most women are the trends which the influencers impose on us. Jeans, white shirt and a blazer with black slingbacks for winter, striped t-shirt with wide leg pants and sambas for summer, for instance. So we all wear the same uniform with minor differences. That being said, how do YOU propose that we avoid being the same, since you all influencers propose the same capsule wardrobes of neutrals and statement pieces. Where is the originality in this? I'm asking you, because I admire your aesthetics. Thank you.
thank you so much for the question! What I was getting at here, was not necessarily about the aesthetic "why" but the psychological "why" - is it because you're feeling elated? Feeling fear about a new experience and want a boost? Panic shopping for an event? Need to self soothe? It's more about understanding your shopping habits vs. understanding your aesthetic here. But when it comes to understanding your own personal style, that is a much longer process ... it's about figuring out how you want to FEEL in your clothes, thenpicking which elements of style give you that feeling.
😡
