The blurb between Dr. J, Julius Irving and Bird needs expanded on. On Nov. 9, 1984, the Philadelphia 76ers visited their rival Boston Celtics in an early-season meeting. Despite the game being played in the first full month of the season, it had a playoff-like atmosphere. Larry Bird was torching the Sixers to the tune of 42 points on 17-for-23 shooting in 30 minutes. He also had pulled down seven rebounds. Erving had just six points. And Bird started yelling out the score between them. When he yelled out 38-6, meaning he had 38 points and Irving just had 6, things got pretty ugly. With 1:38 left in the third quarter, Bird and Julius Erving got tangled up with Bird getting called for an offensive foul. Before the next possession began, Bird and Erving were going at it on the court. At one point, Bird was held by a Sixers player while Erving punched Bird in the face. The fight erupted into a melee at mid-court. Bird and Erving were each fined $7,500 which was the second-highest for player conduct at the time.
Larry's trash talk actually was comedic in many instances, and make for very cool stories years later. It was trash with class that people never forgot.
I saw an interview with Bird late in his career and the reporter asked him about his legendary trash talk. Bird said he talked smack to get fired up with the challenge of backing it up and to mess with the opponent's head. He then said "I don't do it (trash talk) as much as I used to because I can't back it up as well as I used to." I really liked that. Bird was a ruthless killer but he was an honorable sportsman. Another favorite Bird moment - he was running back down court after swishing a spectacular running jump shot. Bird turned his head to the opponent running alongside with an ear-to-ear hick grin on his face and held out his palm. The brother matched the grin and gave it a healthy slap. The sportsmanship and love-of-the-game vibe was too cool.
The statement... "Larry would rip your soul out of your chest and give it back when he felt like it". Best summation of Larry legend, ever! Larry, Magic, and David Stern's guidance using those two legends, brought the NBA back. Greatest NBA years still.
Larry was as savage as they come. A lot of people these days have no idea. The dude was a killer and he talked mad shit. This is not even all the trash talking stories about him. He had one famous game where he hit about 10 in a row on Craig Ehlo then he asked Ehlo, "Is your mother watching?"
They were different. Bitd was morr of a trash talker. And Bird was much kore a team player, his teammates loved him he made everyone have more chances.
Larry was confident because he put in the work. He practiced relentlessly even after he was a superstar, so he knew what he was capable of every time he hit the court. He was an assassin with his game play and also with his ability to get into an opponents head with his trash talk. God, I miss those days!
I watched The Bird sooooooo much in my 20"s.....Good times, though my husband was a Michael Jordan fan. We had great times watching me a Celtics fan. Him a Lakers fan. Love the bird...Original NBA trash talker.
Just heard of an earlier Celtics legend's passing today, Bill Russell. Had to post a remembrance somewhere so why not Larry Legend. Two Celts who can stand with the all timers. Bill was always the well spoken epitome of class both on and off the court. May he RIP.
Enjoyed your reaction! When Larry was a college junior his team played my college central mich. We new nothing about him and but heard he was a superstar. During warm-ups we tried to guess which black player was Larry. Man were we dumb. He also dropped 32 points and beat us lol. Happy Holidays from Michigan!
Mad respect for y'all! I appreciate your respect for Bird, Magic, & Jordan. I was a young girl who had never watched a basketball game. I was flipping through the channels and there was Bird. That was it. #33 is still my favorite number to this day. These guys were exceptional & deserve the ultimate respect. Thanks for this great video.

We knew we were witnessing something special. I loved you guy's reaction. Got my like, sub and notify. P.S. Me and my friends used to go by Larry's house on the weekends to try to watch him mow his own lawn. We were four for twenty something. Had to love "Lunch Bucket" Larry.
I've watched a ton of these Larry Bird reaction videos and I think I like this one the best. You both seem so good-natured and intelligent. Great job, fellas.
Bird either broke a player down, or forced an opponent to be a better player, & it was the strength of the player, which way they were affected.......that was just a part of who Bird was 😊

When I was a kid Kareem Abdul Jabbar was unstoppable. The best compliment I've heard is Kareem Abdul Jabbar naming Larry Bird as the best he ever played against. It gets no better than that.
I am of Bird's generation. Magic was my favorite player, but he and Bird were both artists on the court. Today's game would be ideal for Bird. Size, jumping ability, what they call athletic ability are important but skill rules--skill and a sense for the game are the 2 most important things in the game. Look at some of todays players. Is Steph a great athlete? How about Luca? Chris Paul? Kyrie? Harden is not a superior athlete either. I think Bird would also benefit from training and medical advances and would probably have had a longer career if playing today. He would be one of the best in ERA, but I always though Magic was a notch ahead of him. Magic would be great to day as well but I think Birds game translates a little better.
The league and its players owe Bird, Magic and Jordan EVERYTHING they have from the being in the NBA. Stern is on record saying that at one time the league was considered a thug league and on the brink of ending. But God smiled in 1978 and gave the NCAA a Bird vs Magic match up and it worked so well he allowed it to follow them to 1979. From there they changed how the game was played. Magic was a 6'9 PG which was unheard of in 79 while introducing Show Time to the world as well. Bird had a ugly but deadly jump shot along with a strong understanding of the importance of fundamentals. They showed that flash and fundamentals could both bring championships in there own way. They made America interested in the NBA again with their rivalry. Then Jordan came along and took the game global and that is the biggest reason why one can sign a ridiculous 5 yr 170 million contract today. So yeah those 3 should get 1% of every contract from every team. 😉

I'm happy Larry is getting the respect from today's players and fans . He was amazing and frustrating if you were with another team. You hated him but in a good way .
Yes, Larry's trash talking may have inspired the guys playing against him to play better and try harder, but in the end, it just wasn't enough to stop him.
Larry wasn't loud with his trash talk, usually only a few guys could hear it and mostly just the guy who he was trashing. His talk was designed to throw other, less focused, players off of their game. Psychological warfare from the legend.
I'm an older guy. Dam I used to love watching Larry Bird. Especially when it was Magic Johnson on Bird. I don't even watch the NBA anymore Nobody hustles
As a guy from that era I respect you for giving props to the players from my time. I don't follow the NBA anymore because of what it has become for the same reasons you called out in your reaction.
Note that these opponents speak with admiration NOW. I don't think they felt it then, but later realized how tough it is to back up you sh*t night after night. Larry was a solid guy. He later helped Chuck Person get a job when Bird was with the Pacers (although Chuck had some legal issues later in life). He was a true friend to Magic (supported him when he was HIV +) and Barkley (called him in support when Barkley got a DUI). There are LOTS of other trash talking stories (Kevin McHale, Pat Ewing, Rick Carlisle, Danny Ainge, Robert Parish, Dan Majarle, John Stockton, James Worthy, Kareem, Rodman, Isiah, etc. Larry generally couldn't physically dominate (although to call him unathletic is false) but he could take you out mentally, like Orlando Woolrige said.
I miss those good old days. When i played sports in the 80s and 90s, i was going to war. I wouldn’t waste my time playing if I couldn’t put 200% into winning that game. And if you were talented and strong but were slacking off, you got no respect from me. I want you to give it everything you got. Because I’m gonna bring it to you. Larry the goat. I played the same way. People used to tell me to lighten up and not be so intense. No bro. If im not intense. I might as well go home and go to bed. I don’t deserve to play.
This really helps explain Jordan's approach to leadership on the Bulls. He had to grow up facing Bird, Magic and the Detroit Bad Boys. So he became a hard ass and then probably realized he had to prepare his teammates to face that all that shit talking in game
Nothing but Respect to y'all! I'm from San Antonio, do the math of the players in this video. Several played with the Spurs Big fan of them I've met The Big Dawg, I've met The Iceman, I've met Sean..... Nothing but Respect!
@@dunsonhouse First off I have *seen* the ENTIRE game. The Hawks and Celtics were close at halftime. By two point or so. sot wasn't any blow out at that time. Nor I was the end maybe. Celtics finished 12 points ahead. t the final score One of the reasons the Hawks players at the end fell off the bench is that Larry Bird set a record for most baskets he had ever had which was 60 baskets. It not only a record for Bird, it was also the Celtics record as well. They knew it was a count down for Bird as he broke his *own* teammates (McHale) at 56 points. Of course in t he said "Why6 did you pull yourself of the game with five minutes left? You had the hot hand, we gave you the feeds, their guards were ineffective .[including Domonique Wilkins] 9 days after he had set it the record beating Bird's previous record. If that ball had been mine and the same circumstances hell I'd keep going and try for 60." BUT WHAT STUNNED THEM WAS AFTER HALFTIME Bird bombed in 37 of his points in the second half with *remarkable perimeter shooting display* punctuated by an incredible 11 points over the final 1:56 minutes of play.
He scored 60 ppints for a reason, he cpuld have done it many other times but wanted to do it that game. He would pass alot to other guy a week before to avenge his high school bully who was guardjng mchale. He succeeeded and his high school bully was angry and suspended but Mchla ebrole his points record. That was a week befpre this game and Bird said “you should have gone for 60”. Then next week he did that to surpass the record
I remember playing ball in the gym and when it would be getting close to game time we would all rush home. I still remember watching game 7 in 84. Magic and bird really were that big of a deal back in the day. Ever bet as big as they are made out to be today
I'm glad i grew up during the Heyday of the NBA . The Playoffs were battles every round . You saw sweeps but it was rare . I was spoiled watching Bird in his prime . I can just imagine the Championships we could have won with Len Bias . What a Sin RIP len bias .
Just to give you an idea how Bird and Magic felt walking on the court every night. Imagine yourself at your peak game today, you have the hang time, the 3s and no miss 2s, then you are ready to walk on the court and everyone on the floor are 5th graders learning to play. Exactly what is going on your mind? How many do I want to score against these boys? They were in a different level even by today’s standards.
When he did that to his defender I believe he also planted a seed in their head for games to come. Some probably were already mentally tired by the time the next game with him came around
Wow you and your brother look so alike❤❤❤❤ you're both handsome❤❤❤❤ I can't wait to see your reaction to Larry Bird I'm not a basketball fan I'm an old lady I'm more into MMA but I love Larry Bird he was the goat❤❤❤❤
Bird was true Legend l remember he was the in the first 3 point comp then he walked to change room where all 3 point players who enter getting ready & he said l come in just to see who going finish 2nd because he knew he would win. Which he did.
Y’all have a good feel for the NBA back in the day. The 80s and 90s game was just so much more “extra” than today. You gentlemen have a real good feel for that. Btw, I could not stand Bird when he was playing. But damn if I didn’t respect him. Thanks for the reaction and dialog.
He walked by one team before the game and said he felt like 43 tonight and he did. He had one assist away from a quadruple double half way through the third quarter and didn’t play anymore even though he was asked if he wanted to

Good video bro. It makes me happy to see young cats looking at things from when the league it was definitely a lot more hardcore and at your neck. If you look into it there's a few times where Jordan is actually giving bird some credit for making him mentally tougher. Of course Mike was young and Larry was halfway through his career when they met but Jordan did like all the greats do they learn from a gray and a little bit on it bird in Georgia to my favorite two players of all time. It depends what day it is which one I said my number one keep up the good work and mind you, the people he's doing this against some of them religious in their own right
I got to watch those great Laker Celtics series. So many great players. Magic and Bird in their prime. The 1992 documentary of the dream team is excellent

Bird, Magic, and Jordan would eat today's players up.

Larry would have these players who cry on Twitter (Kd mainly) crying for their mums before even set foot on court
Larry would have asked..."Is your Mom watching?" ....
And they would go all fetal position in the middle of the gsme.
😄

I like it when ur brother is with you reacting to the video thx Kidd I enjoyed that 👍☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ 33
I don't even watch the NBA anymore
Nobody hustles
I respect that appreciate the comment
Great clip, boys! My favourite was Magic’s story at 11.47 and his “Get outta my face, man”. 😂
I agree with everything they discussed! Great fun! Cheers!!
I think in Bird's era people thought they could make a difference. But they were taught a lesson by Bird. LMAO
Good job, guys. I enjoyed it. And you’re one of the very few that don’t talk over the sound bites.
As a guy from that era I respect you for giving props to the players from my time. I don't follow the NBA anymore because of what it has become for the same reasons you called out in your reaction.
That's also why people respect Dirk a lot as well. He did it with one team. Mad respect
Facts appreciate the comment
Umm well dirk AINT no larry bird!!
@@deborahbrick8679 no but still it is respected to be loyal to team.
And Giannis also took a team and elevated the team.
Larry generally couldn't physically dominate (although to call him unathletic is false) but he could take you out
mentally, like Orlando Woolrige said.
Awesme commentary! u guys are fantastic true blue! Thank you so much!
You kids don't know Larry Legend. He is the best by far. He will still demolish the competition If he plays today.
Several played with the Spurs
Big fan of them
I've met The Big Dawg, I've met The Iceman, I've met Sean.....
Nothing but Respect!
Thank you for watching family
When those guys fell of the bench watching Larry that was the night Larry got 60 points.
man Larry bird just was crazy
@@dunsonhouse First off I have *seen* the ENTIRE game. The Hawks and Celtics were close at halftime. By two point or so. sot wasn't any
blow out at that time.
If that ball had been mine and the same circumstances hell I'd keep going and try for 60."
BUT WHAT STUNNED THEM WAS AFTER HALFTIME Bird bombed in 37 of his points in the second half with *remarkable perimeter shooting display*
punctuated by an incredible 11 points over the final 1:56 minutes of play.
Enjoyed your reaction. You guys get it.
Thank you ✊🏽
I remember playing ball in the gym and when it would be getting close to game time we would all rush home. I still remember watching game 7 in 84. Magic and bird really were that big of a deal back in the day. Ever bet as big as they are made out to be today
as a 58yo that grew up watching nba....i miss the old days, when you had to show up or take that L
Facts appreciate the comment
So many legends from that era,my Favourites are Bird and the Dr.
✊🏽
Great reaction! You guys were glued to the video.
Your right about. The friends thing.
Friends!
Ain’t no friends in Basket ball!
In today's Era, Bird would probably average a triple double, and several MVP awards. Would probably average 40 ppg
I respect that appreciate the comment
Byrd and Johnson..... Best years of pro ball.
When I was a kid I watched every Larry Bird game that came on the TV
Bird, Magic, Jordan. Like the baseball version of McQuire and Sosa. Kept the games fun and entertaining
You guys are so fun to watch. Thanks.
Appreciate that my guy
Players today are all about themselves & if u talk bad on court instead of doing what larry did & prove they instead get mad & fight.
Appreciate your comment ✊🏽
He walked by one team before the game and said he felt like 43 tonight and he did. He had one assist away from a quadruple double half way through the third quarter and didn’t play anymore even though he was asked if he wanted to
very few podcasters i watch until the end...I did with you guys
Cool video fellas! Larry legend!
Thank you my guy

Charles Barkley story I could listen to over and over again because it tells you exactly who Larry Bird was😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
[ 15:48 ] - Those two guys on the opposing team who walk off with the ball: "Yo, let's get outta here. This is some bullsh*t". They don't even look surprised that it went in 😁😁😎😎🙏🙏
these guys are good i like you guys thanks
These highlights demonstrate exactly why Larry Legend has always been my favorite player.
Thanks for showing Dennis Johnson. ☘️R. I.P.
Could you imagine if they had "mic'd up" in Bird's day? It would be the most watched Basketball video in history.
Facts
loving the bird videos
Thank you my guy appreciate the comment ✊🏽
This is the second time I watched u two watching the trash talking of Bird u can't help but laugh.
😂😂😂
Larry ripped off 3 straight MVPs from 84-86 with Magic, MJ, Moses Malone, and many others in their prime! Love the video man!
Just remember - in the first story told by Byron Scott, the players for the Lakers on the floor at the time were - Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Byron Scott and Michael Cooper. They knew the play but could not stop Bird.
Appreciate the comment ✊🏽
And correct me if I'm wrong, but those are some BAD boys!
It depends what day it is which one I said my number one keep up the good work and mind you, the people he's doing this against some of them religious in their own right
Appreciate the comment my guy ✊🏽
I got to watch those great Laker Celtics series. So many great players. Magic and Bird in their prime. The 1992 documentary of the dream team is excellent
Great craic lads,I was your age, when Larry Legend was at his peak, although I loved the showtime Lakers,Larry was such a one off
