I’ve always been an over watering type person so I started watching a lot of videos on aloe. This has been by far the most informative. Thank you.
Absolutely, totally agreed. I tend to overwater also, have had a few dying leaves falling over too.
We have had a huge aloe vera for probably 20 years, sitting on a table right by a big south-facing window. In the Summer, I close the curtains when the sun comes around to that window because it helps keep our room more comfortable....so that has inevitably helped the aloe, too. The leaves have never been sunburned. It isn't in any special soil....just plant potting soil. It has pups. It seems happy.
I bought an aloe plant at ikea a couple of years ago and now I have 4 big aloe house plants and a couple of babies growing in smaller pots. I love how easy they are to grow and ofcourse how versatile they are in diy’s

I live in Arkansas and my aloe is in just plain ol miracle grow, watered twice a week, and is an absolute beast.
i live in ark as well and i only water mine once a month, with our humidity it does not need more water than that, other wise i would kill it,

@@farihash3498 if you live in tropical country like Philippines, please don't let it outside with direct sunlight. They turn brown if I let them grow without shade so I place them under our tree.
Hmm But I think that if you live in temperate country, you can stay it outside without so much worry, unlike us who live in dry place.
@@franchescag.maligaso311 how often do you water it in the Philippines? My country has the same humidity. My plant's having dents in it and I think it's improper watering. Would help so much if u reply to this 🙏

I am also in Tucson, AZ (zone 9a), and a customer of our yardwork business gave us an aloe vera plant (our customers love us!). That had to be about 5 years ago now. Well, I totally ignored it. A couple summers ago, during the super heat we had for months and months, my entire patch (it grew to about a 3 foot diameter patch!) was all brown, purple, burnt tips (tips? half the leaf!). We were fully persuaded it was all dead!
Well, our super monsoon rains this year have my aloe vera plants all full, green, and vibrant! My aloe has a solid case of massive abuse against me, but all's well that ends well, right? (If you agree, tell my aloe plants, please! LOL)
Now, I am planning to harvest some pups, and practice propagation so I can start selling potted aloe vera plants in terra cotta pots.
Very helpful, thank you - I was buying mine when the roots were already rotting due to over watering, once I found this out, I was able to save the last one by taking it out of the soil and leaving it to dry out for a few days before re-potting in cactus soil; however, I then realised it wasn’t getting enough light, then I gave it too much light and it got sun burnt, it recovered from that but then I realised I was under watering it, so now, armed with more info, I think I will be able to give my plant everything it needs to thrive - I won’t be giving up, it’s been quiet the journey but I’ve learned a lot about plant care just from this one plant (and the two that didn’t survive 😢), so it’s very special to me, although all my plants are…
…I’m just at the start of my plant parenting journey and I’m learning so much from them already, they have actually given me a life - having lived most of my life with undiagnosed autism and adhd, I could never find a reason to live, but plants have given me that, it’s so weird how they have affected my life and although it’s very early doors, I want to somehow at some point use plants to somehow bring people, hopefully communities, closer together and inject some real life into people’s lives to bring more love and joy into the world ❤️ I can’t bare the world that most people live in today and yesterday (it was Mother’s Day here in the UK) I spent the day with my son and his family and I found out from them that there’s a war going on in Ukraine and I’m amazed that in 2020 people are still going along with things like this 😭 I would rather stand and be killed than take any part in any kind of war, what’s the point??? Haven’t people realised yet that you don’t get love, peace and joy from separation, hate and fighting/war 😢
I just purchased my first aloe plant. I found your video looking to take care of it. I'm repotting it today into a terra cotta pot and will leave it dry for about a week before I water it. Thank you for the information. I'm in USDA zone 7a (0°F to 5°F) and 7b (5°F to 10°F).

my potted aloe was so bad i almost threw it away. it got plent of light in the window and i did not over or underwater it. i sat the pot in a about 1" of water in a bucket and let it sit there for about 2-3 hours. i took it out and put it back into the window. i had signs of this helping after just a few days and it got much better in about 1-2 weeks. i then fed it some plant food and the growth took off and it looks amazingly healthy. i am now watering it from the bottom. i did this with a hanging petunia basket and made all the difference as well. i think there are spots in the soil that dont accept water but are forced to when sitting in a bath and allowed to wick up from the bottom.

I'm in zone 10 here in Florida,I put mine out on rainy overcast days, most of the time they're all inside near a window, such a nice show, I subscribed to your channel because of the quality of the video
I live in Nova Scotia Canada and my aloe plant spent the summer outside. It made a TON of babies and I didnt have enough pots for them so I tied them up with twine and have them hanging in my window temporarily, until I get more pots. I give them a spritz of water now and then.

Great information. I'm in 9a but Florida where it rains and rains and rains, except during the late spring. Then I water daily so - I moved the aloe to full sun and didn't water it but the plants near by.. They were dying in the midday sun but it may have been from too much water. This video really gave me the info to help them survive ME. LOL I also new there were many varieties of aloe and didn't know which variety mine was - I really wanted the medicinal one. Yesterday I decided to buy another one that I could keep potted in a grow bag so it wouldn't stay too wet. Your info has given me so much so that I could buy the right plant, raise it correctly, and enjoy it the way my Mom's use to grow outside with no help what-so-ever. Thanks!
I don't have a green thumb at all ... I'm a notorious plant killer. Which is pretty funny considering my dad grew up living the farm life. I was born and raised near NYC though so I never learned anything about planting and growing. My daughter has given me plants on occasion for mothers day and they always wind up dying. I think maybe I was over watering them ? I enjoy watching these videos ... I never realized different plants have different needs. It inspires me to try again and this time I might actually keep them alive. Thanks for the information and tips.

I am in plant zone 1 and it is extremly dry and very hard to balance in the winter. Because some plant need water every other day now, like eucalypso and Pinetree and almost no water to dumbcane and peperomias and we have almost no sun in the winter, so I have to have alot of grow light or bright LED lights :)

This was a great video. You could teach classes on plants and so many other topics. I really enjoy all of your videos. I’m in zone 6 but my current house is shrouded in shade. I have tried the so called “low light, easy to grow” plants and it is always an epic fail. I don’t give up though, I love gardening. Keep up the good work.

I grow Aloe all of the year around in the UK. My house is full, Paul's potty pots on facebook. I grow it and use it, get one, grow it and keep them forever. As she said, you can use this everyday! I do and I have the smoothest skin in town.
I had an aloe plant that recently just collapsed from the center (exactly like you described). I was wondering what happened to it, but now I know that I definitely over watered it ☹️. Thanks for the info! I live in Wisconsin, hard to keep plants in this weather, but I try anyway! Hehe

So I just bought my first little aloe plants (2), and I am hoping to grow them into nice large plants to use for skin care purposes. The only thing is that I have no idea what I’m doing. I don’t know when I can cut the *leaves*- correct word? off without hurting the plant, as well as how often I can do this on one plant. These videos I’m finding are wonderful sources of info, but I don’t exactly have a green thumb, so I’m really concerned that I am going to kill them because I am just very unfamiliar with plant care. I am definitely learning a lot from your videos, though! Keep making more about Aloe plants!

I'm in Zone 8b which is good for growing aloe vera outside. Have to be careful though because the sun and temps in the summer will fry them. Do make sure if you have them outside that they do have a tree nearby that can help to filter out the full sun. I have lost many plants that say they like full sun. But the full sun is just too much here for plants and for people.
Lol.....but seriously..
I have had the same problem! None of my succulents or cacti like "full sun", they just die so I have to move them inside.

@@nadineburford4977 Oh sorry just saw this. Those are your planting zones which helps you to determine what grows best for your region. Just ask google what your zone is for your City/State. Then you can research what plants would thrive in your region. However most nursery's in your city will carry plants that are for your zone, but there are tons they don't carry as well. It's kinda fun to check out!! :)

Don't be scared if your plant core goes black. Cut the black out, remove the soft roots and put into dry soil and a fresh pot. Mine came back within 2 weeks. This was an indoor houseplant in my house in Ireland.

I’m just developing love for plants. And today I’m on the rescue mission to save my overwatered aloe vera…
The roots had only begun to rot. I cut them clean and potted the plant into a dry soil. I haven’t however left the plant to heal out of the soil before potting. Could you tell me if it’s a necessary step?
I’m planning to check on the roots (hopefully) in 5 days and not to water the plant before I do it. Is it a good plan, do you think? 🤔 :)
Geography - wise… The aloe and I are in Poland. ;) 🙃 It’s end of very warm winter here. The aloe sits on eastern window sill. So, it’s in an immediate, but not very strong sun.

If you wanna have bigger & full room of the whole aloe vera, you need to remove all the babies into other pots..I been 6years to understand growing aloe vera which some has being abandoned..now with this strategy made me definitely smile with it, so far so good always in stock& anytime to use it.

The most important point I got to learn here is the plant doesn’t mostly need direct sunlight(except early morning) but should be placed in Bright Light. Correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks.

aloe vera originates from very close to Egypt - arabian peninsula, it should do well there
We have a lot of aloe in our garden in Cairo. I also saw it all over Egypt.

Great advice. I have just received an aloe plant as a gift!
I had a pot of aloe and it died. I tried everything possible to keep it alive, including educating myself on how to care for it and it died all the same. I’m not sure what I was doing wrong, but I didn’t propagate or replant the plant, could that be a problem?
they do not need to be repotted often, and watered very little, that is what causes most aloe to die, is over watering, once a month is more than enough, for smaller plants, might need more, i keep mine in south window but a foot or so back from it, and my blinds shut in summer, they still get bright light but not mid day sun, i am not a big fan of this plant to be honest, they are pretty easy to kill actually, but cheap so you can always start over with a new one, walmart sells them all the time

I live in Missouri zone 7b. Growing succulents outdoors is good here as I have plenty of places for outdoor shaded or indirect light during spring, summer and fall. In the winter I would have to bring them indoors but don’t have a south facing window for any light at all. Have you had any experience with growing lights to help through the winter months?

Christine thank you for this informative video! My aloe grows differently it grows up and kind of falls on the side because of the weight. Is it just a different time of aloe or am I doing something wrong . Also it has brown leaves because I was experimenting with the location , it is not on direct sun any more . New leaves look beautiful but the brown ones do not get better. Should I cut them ? And what is the best way to cut of the leaves?
Interesting! I live in zone 5a and I keep my aloe in the sunniest spot of the house, and despite that it grows roots that hang over and out towards the sun. Otherwise it looks quite plump and happy! I suppose being in direct sunlight makes up for the colder environment?

To think growing up in JA these plants grow wild as weed unattended and unappreciated. Only when we need them for cosmetic or medicinal purposes do we even look at them. They grow big and luscious in all variations of shade and heat. I think they begin to require more care the minute they’re potted. Left to grow in soil and unbothered they do just fine. We cut any leaf we need and it grows right back. No care needed.

My aloe plant looks much different, a lot less leaves but they are much thicker. I am wondering if mine is not the medicinal kind? I did not even know there was more than one type! I accidentally ripped a leaf off while wattering my other succulents, a few of the points must have gotten caught in my sweater, woops. I had two leaves just the ither day kind of droop and made me think it was root rot. Thankfully the plant itself is fine, but the two lower leaves kind of rotted at the base. I cut the weird, onion smelling brown part off and stuck them in some soil. Hopefully they grow into new healthy plants. This video was very helpful, thank you!
