    Old Spa-Francorchamps circuit onboard with map and indicator. We do the 1947 - 1978 version of the track, with the Raidillon, Masta Kink and the banked Stavelot Corner.
    Spa-Francorchamps is well known for the F1 Belgian Grand Prix. The circuit has a rich history with the old circuit twice as long as the current track.
    In this onboard video we pass all iconic corners of the old Spa-Francorchamps street circuit. Old Les Combes, Burnenville, the Malmedy Chicane, Masta Straight, Masta Kink, Hollowel, old Stavelot Corner and La Carriere.
    Most famous corner of todays Spa-Francorchamps is the steep Raidillon, often incorrectely called Eau Rouge. Even after it was introduced in 1939 another corner on the old circuit was more feared... The Masta Kink!
    Since the new Spa-Francorchamps circuit opened in 1979, the old street circuit is only public road. Untill 1999 it was possible to do a complete lap at old Spa-Francorchamps. But in 2000 the current circuit became a permanent race track and is now closed for traffic.
    To make my lap at the old Spa-Francorchamps circuit complete I had to film the permanent track from the public zones. The rest of the old circuit is onboard.
    Thanks for watching this video.

      You're welcome. Yes the Masta Straight in combination with the fast Masta Kink (actually it were two kinks) was the most demanding part of the old circuit. Even after the Raidillon (not Eau Rouge!) was introduced in 1939, the Masta Kink was the most feared corner.

      Thanks to getting interested in this and driving the course a lot in sims like most of us have 😏 I just found out about L'ancienne Douane, which was a weird hairpin jutting out from where the Raidillon is now. It doesn't seem to be represented in any games I've played.

    Ok,
    This is really cool to see a few things as an American who can only admire from Google Earth and videos from a far that I did not know.
    1-Obviously, running the "old circuit" in race conditions is not possible as much of the old layout is, and was public road... Which you get a sense of the age and culture of the town around the track indicated from what was seen in the movie "Grand Prix" as far as the close proximity the town actually had for viewing purposes.
    2-How much of the old circuit is actually modified where you now have modern intersections and highway (motorway) on and off points.
    3-Roads after you leave the modern circuit look just a friggen rough as they were back in days gone by.
    4-I have a question... Along the "old circuit" through town, is there any sort of historical markers to indicate that you are actually on the old road layout or no?

    • @Circuitsofthepast
      @Circuitsofthepast  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks! There are no historical markers that memorize to the old street circuit. Most people don't even realize they are on the old Spa-Francorchamps circuit. However, on the parking next to the Mast Kink you see kerbstones. That's beacuse the parking was built as a chicane, but never used for it's purpose.

    Wow! That was fascinating. I've driven quite a few laps around there in rFactor 2 and was surprised to see how much of that original circuit still exists and how many buildings still remain.
