Thanks Alex. I just finished the book. I there were a couple things (as a fan. I certainly wasn’t there) that I never heard before. Like the wrong kid you beat up for ratting on Edward 😂. The day Edward died I was working a later shift as a retail manager. My 20 year old son calls me and said “dad, I’m sorry but did you hear the news?” Eddie died. I locked myself in my office and cried my eyes out. A co worker as me at 11 pm if I wanted to go get a beer at Applebees. He knew I was upset. I had a beer with him, got in my car to drive home. I rolled my windows down and absolutely blared the song I NEEDED to hear. Respect the wind. Got home and turned on UA-cam on my tv and The next was his video for Catherine. After that the Live without a net concert. Crying all night. Thanks for you and your entire family and EVERYONE who’s been in the band for giving us the best music that has ever been made. It's a phenomenal book, in great part bc it's not a tell-all book about he behind the scenes of the band, like getting drunk etc. There's a bit of that but I LOVE how it went into their family history, how their father instilled these values into them re being a professional musician, just like Alex says in this interview. Saw the short edited version of this on KTLA this morning, so I had to look up the full version….great stuff….love the brothers and I thank them for being a part of my life and providing much of the soundtrack. God bless Alex and long live King Edward!
Its VERY good isn't it ? ....Alex goes into his Brother & his history much more extensively & personally than any of these musical journalists have..Even if he occasionally quotes them.... But some parts Alex talks about must have been very painful for him to remember.... & he is so right when he says that sometimes bringing up memories can be cathartic but other times it can ingrain already existing wounds...... Its quite a haunting thought for a musician like me who was so inspired by Edward to learn from Alex's inside testimony that adulation may have put psychological pressure on Ed which may have had unforeseen long term consequences. 😔 (Paul)

Happy to watch this interview w/Alex~ wish the interviewer did his research - said brothers were from Denmark (instead of Holland) and said Alex you played drums and Ed guitar at first and then decided to switch instruments which we know is incorrect -
@bringingitbacktothebeatles Thats not what you said though...you said they decided to switch and "he went to drums and you went to the guitar", which is the opposite of what happened. Let's assume you were just nervous...
31:50 Alex is quite right to emphasize that nobody can analyse ED'S techniques trying to take apart how he did them . If I'm truly honest I've made a bit of a fool of myself attempting this on our FB page ...Sorry.......'Sparrow mimicking an Eagle' .....There are some things in Art which are in the words of Martial Artist Jesse Glover 'Beyond Tech' .....You can't find them or recreate them by analyzing them down to their components because something else is involved in the equation. Not measurable or quantifiable. Just a connect between the artist & something beyond them. MOZART knew this. So did EDWARD. 😔 (Paul)

@FrankieLovesElvis Yes that was a DLR lyric Alex quoted from him in his book...Alex was quoting a lot of lines from DLR 's lyrics in his book actually...He quoted lyrics from 'Unchained',,,,'Fools' ,,,'Could the Be Magic' (Paul)
All the decades I have been aware of Van Halen, I was never bothered by the fact I rarely heard anything from Alex. This is the year I realized I missed out on such an important pillar of this band. Glad I was able to finally experience such a missing link , mostly because he has allowed himself to break down the wall he held up all these years .
This was a lovely interview with Alex! He is so full of wisdom. I didn't have a dad, but I bet he is one of the best dad's (probably has one of those coffee mugs stating that. lol). WILL SOMEONE PLEASE ASK HIM ABOUT THE RINGS? SIGH. Are they the 2 rings that Edward wore that I think were their parents wedding rings? Where is Ed's wedding ring to Val? Does Wolf have it? Anyway, thanks so much for this. I love getting to know more about their family. I also wish we could get more musical family history on both sides of his ancestorial lineage. He did mention a sentence in Anderson Cooper interview, I think. GREAT JOB! Long Live King Edward! 🎸👑
One of my few regrets in life is never having the chance to hear Edward perform live. What an incredible experience that would have been. Rest in peace, King Edward.
Because Sammy Hagar DIDN'T sell out in Anchorage , I couldn't see Van Halen live till Gary easily replaced Captain(Al and Ed were mean to me 😭)Candyass . Hagar played up in Alaska a few times before replacing Dave . Hagar lied blaming some SNAFU on cancelling a 5150 promotion concert in Alaska . Hagar went all diva and got pissed he was a handful of unsold tickets short of a sellout concert . He told the arena manager he'd never play up here ever again . And this is after he promised to be coming back up . Anyways I heard the most vicious guitar howl at the beginning of the Anchorage concert with Gary being the great new lead singer .
@@akfreed6949 I think what happened between Sammy Hagar & Edward/Alex was first they lost their manager Ed Leffner who united the band from 1986-1995 and their new manager then seemed to divide them..... Secondly I think at some point Sammy became more into his business ventures than the music possibly, and third Sammy wrote this terrible chapter in his book he shouldn't have written called 'Crazy Eddie' which was out to embarrass Edward. This totally alienated Alex who was very protective towards his little brother. (Paul)
@walterevans2118 quit thinking . You're just repeating the same bullshit Sammy Hagar lied about . Alex said he quit . Edward said he quit . Mike said he quit . Ray Danniels said he quit . Even Sammy Hagar said he quit . It wasn't Ray Danniels' fault . It was Sammy and his big mouth . He even said so himself he didn't mind doing the Twister soundtrack even though he bitched and moaned and cried about it in his book of lies . I show facts and you just repeat Sammy's lies and bullshit .
@@akfreed6949 Whoa. Peace brother. No need to go so angry on me ok....Yes. I AGREE that Sammy did indeed change his story about being fired when originally he left ....Alex & Ed confirmed that & even Mike did. I remember Ed in 1996 telling Steve Rosen that Ed stipulated on the phone to Sammy that he needed to be a team player as VH were a BAND. Sammy then said he was going back to being a solo artist & Ed said -'Well lets exchange telephone numbers, no hard feelings & keep in touch'.... Sammy agreed & then months later he said he was fired. He claimed that he heard the brothers had gone behind his back to work with DLR BEFORE they decided to go their separate ways but if one looks at the chronology I don't think this version holds water. With the Ray Daniels thing there were two different versions. Sammy claimed Ray Daniels weaponized Edward against him whereas others claimed that Ray Daniels had Edward's interest at heart and that Sammy was trying to weild too much power in the band as a singer 'frontman' . (Paul)
Not sure why AVH gave this interview. It lacks the professionalism of the Ariel Levy interview. Despite that it is still a good interview with a few bits and pieces of interesting information. I liked AVH explanation why the book/story ends in 1984.

You can tell the interviewer isn’t a musician. That one flew right over his head. What a gem that would have been had he followed up. Ed tuned down 1/4. He was on his own program and marched to the beat of his own brother.
This was a nice interview, especially since they were invited into his home. What I would LOVE to see is Rick Beato doing an in depth interview talking about the music and drumeo doing something similar. It's great that Alex is finally talking but I have heard that story about Jan getting thrown in jail now at least 4-5 times. Just saying there are SO many questions I would like to see asked. I'm also not saying I want to hear anything remotely like gossip. I want to know more about made Edward and Alex tick on a musical level. What they did is as organic as it gets but I'm always interested in anything that describes how they came up with ideas or what prompted them to play some of the gear they played. Alex sat behind some MASSIVE drum sets. I would be curious to know what that was like on stage in front of thousands of people.

You don't get it .Van Halen was with Dave . It's sad Alex only recently praised Dave's work in the band . That's one of the reasons Dave quit . Another reason is when others called him weird behind his back . Dave heard some of the name-calling isn't that right Michael Anthony ? Anyways , we heard enough 💩 that happened after Dave left .
As a child of Dutch Parents who emigrated from the Netherlands, that Denmark question made me laugh. I have heard that one countless times, and I think that Alex has as well, because his reaction was just like mine when I hear that type of mistake.
There's a video of Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) doing a drum cover of "I'm the One." When you see what all goes on there, and how even Mike Portnoy has a look of intense concentration doing it, you realize Alex is the real deal!
I’ve always seen Alex as the big brother/protecter older siblings usually endure more long time vh fan the book solidified that to me his work on the drums is as big as Ed’s guitar glad he recognized it kinda ended in Roth years
7:48 “A=440 Hz isn’t the real pitch.” That’s not quite right. It’s not a question of “a real pitch.” A = 440 Hz is just a reference pitch for musicians to tune to IF they want to, or for manufacturers to build instruments around, and for performers who tour the world so they could have consistency. That’s it. Throughout history there have been MANY reference pitches that were much higher or much lower than 440 Hz, and some that are really close. The reason A=440 Hz is a standard is because manufacturers came together early in the 20th century to establish an agreed upon standard,to make it easier on themselves. The ISO finally agreed upon this suggestion in 1975. But there’s no law, rule, or harmonic or “vibrational” reason that any frequency has to be used over another. The ISO standard is just a suggestion. Different instruments sound great tuned to certain frequencies, depending on its resonant frequencies. One is not worse than another not better.
I met Ed in Sherrman Oaks 2 days in a row. This was the early days of the Covid Plandemic. We shook hands. I was subtly trying to tell him this was a world Psy-op by saying "Humanity is at stake here." And he replied "I know." It's sad to hear his brother couldn't hug him in the end. That was exactly "inhumane" for no reason. It was deception. He was so kind to me. He was a beautiful soul.

Brothers is a beautiful book Al: I have read both the English and Dutch versions and listened to the Audiobook as well.Heel mooi document of your unique brotherhood: rock-solid covenant forever 💙🩵
Saw the short edited version of this on KTLA this morning, so I had to look up the full version….great stuff….love the brothers and I thank them for being a part of my life and providing much of the soundtrack.
God bless Alex and long live King Edward!
I’m really loving Alex’s Book!📖
Totally devouring it!!!🥁🎶🎸 👍❤️👍
Its VERY good isn't it ? ....Alex goes into his Brother & his history much more extensively & personally than any of these musical journalists have..Even if he occasionally quotes them.... 😔 (Paul)
I have to say I am fascinated by hearing Alex. I wish he had talked more in the past. Hope he does another book about 84 onwards....
Alex, Thanks for sharing your stories with us, I just finished the audiobook “Brothers”
The unforgiveable behavior of denying people to be part of a loved one's death was reprehensible.
And especially for a nonsense virus. Ed was immunocompromised, sure, but hospitals generally are filthy.

Thanks for the great interview with Alex. Congratulations to all of your music success, Alex. I grew up with and always loved Van Halen. Alex, Ed, Michael and Sammy were so cool and down to earth. Dave, that's another story, but he was definitely an integral part of that magical music they made early on. RIP Edward, you will never be forgotten 🙏 ❤
Great conversation with Alex!
This interview is by a reporter for KTLA (L.A. TV station). This is the entire interview of which KTLA will probably use a few seconds of for their on-air segment.

Hopefully we can get a sit-down, long form interview soon of you discussing your extraordinary 50 plus-year career of Touring and Recording. Eventho there's lots of "Information" & books out there, much of the VH music & it creation is still a mystery... & you know that😁! God Bless you, Brother AL! 🪖🥁✌
The book was excellent. I am glad Alex is providing these interviews.
At one time Van Halen was the best rock band on the planet. Thanks for the memories Alex
These are so good. I’ve been a fan since 82.
Happy to watch this interview w/Alex~ wish the interviewer did his research - said brothers were from Denmark (instead of Holland) and said Alex you played drums and Ed guitar at first and then decided to switch instruments which we know is incorrect -
Thank you for your comments. I misspoke with Denmark and I was 100% correct with Alex first playing guitar and Ed playing drums. Its in the book!

😔 (Paul)

Nice .women all these years I never noticed the rings
Sounds too personal

WOW, great interview .
I think Alex was very gracious to the interviewer who made some mistakes early on but was much better the rest of the way.
Need more like this Al talking😊
