Wrote this as a reply to someone, but I’ll leave a variation of it here for future viewers: It’s become clear over time that I needed to be more direct about what this video was meant to convey. I say at the start that it’s perfectly reasonable to dislike or be disappointed by the game, and that it *should* have been more, but that the sheer vitriol it’s regarded with is largely overblown, because the game is still pretty fun. The entire idea was essentially born out of the concept of making a video on the game that takes the opposite perspective of most of the others on this site, because I genuinely do enjoy playing it. The pushback was directed at the “Inafune is a villain that soiled my crops and burned my village” types, not the “game kinda sucks” types. The man has done plenty to warrant question and negativity, but I think delivering an underwhelming game is far from the top. Anyway, I’m sorry if you were annoyed by how aggressively I defended the game, but I’m not going to filter my thoughts on a game for the sake of other people not liking to hear it, and I really do think the extreme vitriol unnecessarily killed a pretty fun game’s potentially really fun series. You have full rights to hate the game like a normal person or make fun of me for liking it, but I think the reaction to this video is a pretty good example of how serious people take this game lol

I did hatch an idea up of a sequel/spin-off that was actually going to have us playing as Ray. The plot starts with her found deactivated, and then repaired, by someone named Mr. Gray (No not doctor, Mister). Mr Gray decides to send her hunt down Dr. White (Telling her he is a known terrorist in hiding, Blackwell) in the midst of what seems to be a robot uprising (Beck is notably absent during this). Ray, who has next to no memory thanks to what happened to her and the manner in which she was repaired, agrees to help Mr Gray as well as look into the current uprising. There's obviously more going on then what it seems at first glance, but it is definitely going to be taking a look at Dr. White's flaws along with Ray's past.
Gameplay wise, the idea was playing into Ray being more melee focused, but the big thing about her is she no longer suffers health drain (Thanks to said repairs). However, she's only able to heal up from killing enemies (Think like Raiden from Metal Gear: Rising). Also does have a "Berserker mode" that can be used to deal more damage and increase speed. Naturally, she gets more abilities from taking out bosses.
As I have no coding knowledge or artistic ability though (Plus, the nature of copyright) this concept remains just that though; a concept.

I think one of the biggest detractors was that the game was crowdfunded, which comes with a certain level of trust. If this had dropped from a random indie studio, it might have gained a cult following, but because it was from Keiji Inafune and was insanely overfunded, years in advance, it kind of needed to be perfect. Honestly, the stretch goals probably really dragged it down in the long run, especially the online functions that nobody used. While I personally enjoy the game and would like to see a sequel, I have to admit that it should have been better.

While the game itself might be ok, I think what handicapped the game is the marketing, the kickstarter being so botched, and a collection of nitpicks. Mega Man fans hadn’t had a game in a bit, so some of them were hoping for a true predecessor with absolutely no issues. A lot of the fans, at least from what I remember, felt cheated. And I think that’s something to keep in mind. The game wasn’t JUST the game for a lot of people. The game was the multiple ports that never got off the ground, the anime that never got off the ground, the unskipable credit sequence(I might be incorrect on that one). I think it could have grown into something great someday, but do to issue after issue after issue it just left such a bad taste in people’s mouths that they cast it aside completely.
I do want to play it someday, partially out of morbid curiosity and partially to see if I would have enjoyed it. I wasn’t ever a part of the hate train, and when the game came out a few years back, it was on my Christmas list(I was like 10 or 11 when it came out).
It sucks that the factors around the game led to the game being looked down on so much, because a lot of games are like this: made with passion and love for a specific audience. The only difference is that the situation around the game slighted the audience so badly they killed it immediately.

I think the main issue was the whole Kickstarter campaign thing. People were expecting way better with the money and people behind it. If this was an indie project with way less budget and without Keiji Inafune's name slapped on it, perhaps it would have been massively better received.
I do believe MN9 had some potential, but they chewed way more than they could swallow. If they had focused on doing the game aesthetically better, with nicely planned level design and gave it a solid identity (something that made it look like a Megaman competitor rather than a revival) it would have been a massive hit; but they didn't.
There was another poorly released game from 2016 called No Man's Sky. It was very ambitious and had a disastrous release. But then, after a couple of years and effort, it finally turned into a quite good game for a lot of people. I think MN9 could have had a similar fate, but we'll never know now. At least it brought Megaman back on t he map... I guess.
Finally, Mignty Number 9 is a bad game, but at least it had some nice things and tried to have some personality. I don't think it's the worst thing ever happened to the industry and compared to some recent things like Skull Island Rise of Kong, TLotR: Gollum, Concord, or The Day Before, it surely wasn't as bad as we remember.

Honestly i really enjoyed it when it dropped, still do.
I hadnt had a megaman game in years so us getting a spiritual successor besides gunvolt made me happy.
    The theme was amazing
I enjoy the message behind the game. Faith in yourself and others allows u to make the impossible, possible.
The game was made for speed running and makes it clear. U can pull off some dope shit when u utilize the powers and movement well. Its also not too hard to just pick up and play. With little to no backtracking as u get no powerups that carry over besides lives. Even then u can start with no 9.
I disliked how u get "e tanks", but hey, without them it makes u focus on enemy attacks all the more.
I loved the fact u could save ur siblings instead of destroying them. And some stages were really fun. Like aviatior, Brandish, pyro, cryo, and bat.
I also enjoyed the sibling dynamic between them. U could really feel the care they had for each other in the nicknames and way they look out for beck and their corrupted siblings.
I wish we got more info on what Xel is, why beck can do what he does, the Colosseum, and Ray.
Ray herself was dope. I could tell Inafune mixed a bit of bass.exe and Zero in her. Her "actions" seem like an alt timeline, which I feel messes up possible lore, and the ending seemed like there needed more to it. Both ray and becks ending.
I could forsee White turning evil and being the villain of a sequel. With ray being needed to help beck stop him.
Call i felt was interesting, but needed a lil more story to her. Especially with something they were hinting at.
I liked the extra modes that gave u sumn more to do as u played through the game.
All in all, i enjoyed it for what it was. But i feel it couldve been more if it had a sequel or just more story to it.
Also, brandish is a cheap bitch😂
His weapon goes hard tho. Got me feeling like Zero a bit.

Plus is very challenging and has cool character designs. Like you said Megaman flourished because it was given a second chance. I hope Keiji Inafune doesn’t get discouraged and give the ip another try. As for the voice acting, that’s why I don’t like dubbing so I play it in Japanese which is way better.

I'm not a Mega Man fan despite knowing a good enough summary of the lore for both classic and X series but I can say I like elements here and there from this game, though I think they kinda left Call as roughly a not good example of a Spock like character because I like stoic/logical characters but there's considerable effort into making sure they don't sound too bored sounding, but I can say they generally did good on the characters. I like that you don't kill the other Mighty numbers. I really like Ray and could tell what they wanted out of her from the start of her dialogue and I do like that Dr White tries to help Trinity with her issues and make it seem like she's having a mental breakdown while not being punished for it. While I'll be the first to praise and defend Mighty No. 9, I wouldn't say the people are only angry because the game wasn't what they wanted: people donated upwards of $1000 to see the game be made, and the people behind it were more than qualified (the argument that the first Mega Man game wasn't great until the sequel is kinda moot when you remember that the team had about +15 years of experience making those very same games, you would think they could get right on their first attempt), even if you are to accept that the real budget was less than $4 million dollars, the final product still reflects quite poorly on both Inafune and Inti Creates (who surprisingly are excempt from most blame even though they were the ones who actually put the game together)
That being said, it has been almost 10 years already since the Kickstarter, the people who insist in being butthurt after so many years are beyond petulant totally lapping up to Capcom thinking Mega Man 11 means there's no room for Mighty anymore. Yes, it is the better game but guess what? *It's been almost 5 years already since that one came out* and there's no hint of what's the plan for the series moving forward beyond more collections.
If people were tolerant to the idea of Mighty No. 9 just being a thing, we could have twice as many non-linear run-n-shoot platformers in a decade, both filling each other's gaps without running either franchise into the ground
But sadly, even if Mighty No. 9 2 was to be announced tomorrow and be everything it needed to be, most people would still shit on it...

You know what? you make very good points here, but I do think the issue most people took with the game has nothing to do with gameplay, level design, art direction, or anything else intrinsic to the game - it is primarily due to the gross mismanagement of the whole kickstarter campaign: overpromising and undedelivering.
I do agree that with iteration it could become better, too. Maybe Inti should buy the IP outright and drive it forward.

There are other reasons people were unhappy with the situation other than the gameplay being bad. There were several broken promises in the kickstarter (which is probably to be expected due to unexpected budget costs) but I remember people being angry when the creator started pushing an animated series and other MN9 projects before this game was even released. If I remember correctly, they started asking for funding for other projects while this game was incomplete and lacking features.

Game Development is a pricey pricey business, but also one that we don't have specifics about in relation to its pricey pricey-ness. There's just a lot to consider when it comes to what goes into a game, not only for how much was spent then but also for how much would need to be spent for a sequel now. Not to mention that, honestly, after the backlash, they may just not want to associate with MN9 as a brand ever again. There's just a lot of potential risk.

It's not a trashfire, but it's too mediocre for even most people who have or have not played anything like it.
Additionally, while you did show that certain mechanics are good in the right contexts, they will most certainly not usually be used that way by most who try them. The dash is definitly an integral part of the game as a way to both move fast and destroy enemies, however it's just doesn't go far enough to be used for (what I consider) fast movement and some parts of the game that are broken because of it. (underwater levels just become a non-obstacle)
Most definitely not worth it to buy it at the time at full price.

    • @higinoAnimador
      @higinoAnimador Рік тому

Hi! So, i kinda disagree with you, i think that the dash in Mighty No.9 is arguably the best dash in any Megaman series, and it is even more fast when you play with Ray. I do understand the thought of some parts being "broken" because of it being bad (aka the only underwater level themed) But is this enough to call the game mediocre? I quite like Megaman, and i've played some games a bit too much (Megaman 1, 2, 3 and 5, also X1, X3 and a bit of X4 and X5, the other ones i haven't played as much as those) And dude, the gameplay of Mighty No.9 might as well be the best one out of them, of course the story isn't as interesting as the X, Zero and Battle Network series. But i really ain't joking here, in this game is some of the coolest stages, and bossfights that i have seen in Megaman (Yeah there is some tedious ones like Mighty No.4 stage and Mighty No.2), and yeah the graphics aren't really out there, but if the game plays as butter smooth as this one, i don't really care. People defend Megaman X8 for even minor reasons. (Also that's just my opinion, i've just typed this to offer a different point of view, and if i bothered you i'm really sorry.)

More than not seeing another Mighty No 9 being a disappointment though, we're not likely to see another Soul Sacrifice which was a pretty solid game and I think an article said they managed to plop that one out in under a year of dev time.
That said? ARGUABLY one good thing came from this. Very, very arguably, but hear me out here. Because the company hit financial trouble after the release, it merged with (Read as: Was Acquired by) Level 5. You know, the Dark Cloud, Danball, Fantasy Life, Professor Layton, Yokai Watch, Inasuma Eleven, Rogue Galaxy, Gundam Age, and Ni No Kuni developer/publisher? And while they're not known for their platformers, hopefully, they have some stake/ownership of Red Ash too. I'd pick up a Mighty No. 9 II, or a Red Ash game they put out in a heart beat. Picturing the Dark Cloud/Rogue Galaxy team, or what is left of them, making a Megaman Legends style game sounds awesome if you ask me.

I'm of the opinion that time CAN be kind to this game, provided it manages to reach out an appeal beyond just Mega Man fans - because much of its Kickstarter success rode on the entire 'ride' and not just "fund a Not-Mega Man" ("Inafune will save Japanese gaming!", etc). I was mostly detached from that, so, with no expectations whatsoever, when I did play it, I found it a solid enough play alike that was actually a better time than some stuff like the latter half of some of the X series titles.
...at the same time, though, I felt like they were deliberately shortchanging the 1st entry on purpose hoping to make a 2nd one and try it "for real" on that go around, and when you say the 2nd time could work, it seems like it's less "my gut feeling" and actually that they may not have put their best foot forward. Despite my inclination to be positive given my actual impressions playing the game, I can't work much good will on that one alone - it seems to go hand in hand with Inafune wanting to make this a low key empire without even any proper game to come out to begin with (it seemed like he counted on a sequel without even one game out, and why wouldn't he? He was counting on an animated series and a MOVIE before it all went up in smoke).

The entire Mega Man 1 section is the goofiest thing I've ever heard. Yeah, Mega Man 1 is pretty at some times, but its the game that defined the rest of the series made for the god damn NES. How on God's green Earth did you expect the people criticizing Mighty No.9, a game that had so many games to study during development to see how they succeeded and failed, to get the same treatment. Mega Man 1 had nothing to work off of, and while Mighty No.9 does try to be different with its game design, it has no excuse to be as unpolished and as messy as it is.
By the way, saying that the fanbase (as if they made the rushed and poorly crafted game that barely fulfilled most of its promises) paralyzed this series from the waist down is something else. The community managed to show enough support to get this game $4,000,000. Comcept kept asking for more funding and kept delaying the game, only for it to be insanely mediocre. Who's the one who fucked up here? The company that created an insanely mediocre game through being a jack of all trades while being a master of none? Or is it the fans who just wanted a well made successor to Mega Man and ended up getting a mess of a title?

@@Ismatic1906 The point of this one was to talk about the people that melted down and turned the game from “well that didn’t work out’ into shorthand for blasphemy and trash. I personally think it’s a pretty fun game, but even I acknowledge in the video that it *should* have been better. It’s far from the worst game ever made, but it sure is treated as though it is, and plenty of series (Mega Man or otherwise) have had rough starts and gone on to do great things. MN9 tried to do a lot different from Mega Man (which a lot of people disliked anyway) so I would have liked to seen where it could have gone if the IP wasn’t poisoned by outrage.

I think the best MegaMan game is MegaMan powered up. The reason is because you call play as the bosses, Protoman and even Roll. Also the damage chart for the bosses makes more sense then other games. Like for example in most MegaMan games if the special weapon isn't the bosses weakness then it will do less damage than the megabuster and often even zero damage. However in MegaMan powered up the special weapons are better than the megabuster even if it isn't the weakness which makes a lot more sense. Why do the other games punish you for using a weapon that requires ammo?

There is literally a section where you have to drop into a pit where you can’t see the bottom and there are instant death spikes at the bottom. It’s not even like they was any set up for them so you just die for no good reason. That’s the reason why people are complaining. One point I feel is very critical to understanding what makes MN9 great is that it isn’t Mega Man just because you jump and shoot, regardless of what the marketing wants you to believe.
Hell, even comparing it to Mighty Gunvolt Burst feels a bit wrong, the two are built around completely different scoring systems, one that’s also different to the Gunvolt series that’s also part of the crossover.

It’s become clear over time that I needed to be more direct about what this video was meant to convey. I say at the start that it’s perfectly reasonable to dislike or be disappointed by the game, and that it *should* have been more, but that the sheer vitriol it’s regarded with is largely overblown, because the game is still pretty fun. The entire idea was essentially born out of the concept of making a video on the game that takes the opposite perspective of most of the others on this site, because I genuinely do enjoy it. The pushback was directed at the “Inafune is a villain that soiled my crops and burned my village” types, not the “game kinda sucks” types. If I was worried about people saying what I don’t like to hear about a game I wouldn’t have touched MN9 with a 50-ft pole lol.
