5 years later and I am back again to say thank you! I made this again last night and have been making it since I found your video 5 years ago. Absolutely divine!!!
Same!!! There aren't a lot of recipes on here that top his.
Ive been coming to this video for the last seven years! Every time i make shepherds pie i watch it, please never take it down
Lol I've been doing that since 2018! 😂
You KNOW you can download it, right? 😂
Me too 😂❤❤❤❤
Yesss!!
Same sis
Dude! Outstanding. I tried it a few weeks back. My wife now request it twice a week. It gives me some great leverage, if you know what I mean. Pie for pie. Works for me...
Ayo!!!!😂😂😂
you make her the shepherd pie and she give you her pie🤣
@@ginabushbent326 😄
Dude.....that's a fair deal!!!
@@harmonyspeaks9985 jnnn
In England both Shepherds Pie and Cottage Pie are popular - but - you use ground Beef for Cottage Pie and ground Lamb for Shepherds Pie.
Every time my Irish husband craves shepherds pie, I pull out this video! 4 years strong! Thank you so much!!
Made this as PBJ instructed but made 3 tweaks. 1. I used ground beef and ground pork
2. I thoroughly drained the meat. 3. I added Liipton Beefy onion soup mix to the meat as it browned. That egg yolk really made a difference in the potatoes. Oh man, this was soooooo good and even better the next day!
i'm from Ireland and this is the BEST Shepards pie i've ever had. Delicious!!!
If you're from Ireland (as my wife is) you wouldn't even consider anything but "Cole's" or "Knorr" seasoning mix.
@terryayager4036 well, maybe that's what she uses 🤷♀️ I use knorr. It doesn't matter what brand he said, we use what we have. 😊
@terryayager 4306
I think you mean Colman's
Except its a cottage pie, not shepherds pie......
I am a cook and I love when people give me ideas for different dishes. I made this today for my clients and I will let u know tomorrow how they feel about it ❤❤❤ty
I’m making it today for the second time. Everyone at my house loved it. Thank you.
Yummy 😋
hey u random person scrolling through the comments I hope u have an amazing day

Thank you Glourbus bort! You too 😊
Thank you an you tooooo!!!!!😇👍😄🤘
Glorbus Bort, you are uniquely kind and thoughtful...God Bless you and keep you well+

OMG, Y'ALL, this man can cook. I just pulled my shepherd's pie out of the oven. I don't ever remember this meal being so awesome and flavorful. Thanks for sharing! 🤪❤
This man cannot cook as he does not know the difference between Shepherd's Pie and Cottage Pie. This is typical US not know how BS. Most of the recipe is incorrect. NEVER TRY TO MAKE SOMETHING FROM A DIFFERENT CULTURE UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY KNOW THAT WHAT YOU ARE PRODUCING IS RIGHT. The onion should be cooked first then set aside then the meat should be cooked with pepper and salt - but nothing like he added which was far too much. Then flour should be sprinkled over the meat and allowed to cook with the meat. (This is used to make and thicken the gravy.) The liquid should be allowed to evaporate while the meat is cooking.
so why follow an incompetent.
Originally, in the UK where I am from and where this recipe originated, we never added paprika. Ketchup? Never. Look how wet the mixture was after he added the ketchup. Then fry a little bit? Cook, while stirring is better. Stir in the stock, not water mixed with flour. He called it a slurry - it was not a slurry. If a thickening agent is needed then use cornstarch. Finally, we agree on one thing - only add peas and carrots.
He cannot even peel potatoes correctly
Why do people extoll the virtues of such "cook" who are doing nothing but impress people with no knowledge of cooking with their lack of skills? Such presenters should be hung, drawn, and quartered.
If you check out UA-cam there are dozens of incorrectly produced recipes for all things, including Shepherd's Pie and Cottage Pie. Look for recipes from ENGLISH people, including Ramsay and Marco Pierre White, for how to make this properly.

I made it, but I always use the high ground beef percentage, so I did 93/7, and it was superb! Delicious! Thankyou! 😊Just to say, I used liquid beef broth so it was not dry. 😊
Made this twice so far, once with beef and once with lamb. Awesome recipe!! Thank you for posting it.
MANOWAR KILLS ... You're very clever then because SHEPHERD'S PIE is made with LAMB and COTTAGE PIE is made with BEEF...
It's a classic British dish is Shepherds pie .Was originally made from lamb left over from Sunday dinner .I think it's cottage pie when made with beef and shepherds when made with lamb or mutton as.it was.better.known in olden times .Anyway it's real comfort food and the video was fun to watch
Yeah you're right Joan.
I'm out on the lamb or other things you suggested. I like his with the beef and cheese
In the U.S., it’s made with beef and called Sheppard”s Pie. It definitely is derived from the British dish.. delicious.
@@Pinkfong2 yep, because shepherds look after cows.... smh.
Thats what my nana used to do.
Made this last night family loved it, and there is nothing left! Lol my husband was looking for more this morning and disappointed
This was so bomb!!! Thank you so much for sharing. That cream cheese made it so good.
I added the flour to the meat, let the fat absorb the flour and then add the water(cold water). It’s sorta similar to making green chili (texture wise).
Hi, I have tried this too and it was my first time making this cottage pie. My husband and kids love it. Thank you for sharing this recipe. Greetings from Singapore. 🇸🇬
Great job . We in the UK just call the Worcester sauce, WUSTER, nice and simple. Can’t wait to make this.

Me too, wooster,Scottish/Canadian
Yep it's wuster sauce 😁
I say WOR CHESTER 😂🤣😂🤣
I live near Worcester Massachusetts in USA ....I've heard it pronounced many ways ...but never W til today..
Hey...❤️
I made this recipe and it was outstanding!!! I watched other videos and they all looked dry, mine came out juicy just like yours. I ate almost the entire pan over a few days and froze a 4th. Reason, I had no earthly idea (for over 30 years)my family didn't eat sweet peas, none of them. Still, it was great!!! I could not get enough. THANKS x3
Try them on frozen PETITE peas. So much better than big peas
I can listen to you non stop for hours. I like YOUR style 💗 Nice 👍🏻
This one is a hit! I made it and everybody loves it. I'll make this again and again and again. Kudos to you Jay!
Made this for Sunday family dinner and they all loved it. Did not use thyme. Will surely be making it again!!

Hello, how are you doing today ?
I get the impression that Jay would be one of the most chill people to go out for a few drinks with. Love from England ❤
@Mark Hammond.....I get that same impression...in fact I believe he'd be a hoot to go out with! 🥳Lots of fun for sure, lol...and chill. 🙃 🍻
I love to watch your recipes! You make it simple but so good! God bless you.
As an ex-pat Brit what you have made is actually a Cottage Pie. Shepherds Pie is always, always made with lamb - Shepherds Pie.
Secondly Worcestershire as in the sauce is simply pronounced as Wus-ter-sheer. It looks great - will definitely try it
Thank you for pointing that out, I was about to say the same 👏👏
From Bulgarian perspective this has the traits of moussaka, albeit different of course. But in essence it's a very bizarre sort of moussaka. I don't know if this is the normal way how Americans do mash potatoes, but the Bulgarian way is 10 times simpler. Probably not that tasty, but simpler, nonetheless.
Nah, Wooster sauce.
Agree with "Wooster" possibly "Wister" but definitely no "shire"
Beef = cottage pie
Lamb = shepherds pie
And in Scotland it's Wooster shirt sauce not so much herbs and spices I would only add 2 * oxo* cubes and add carrot onions, peas leave to cool slowly till thickens slightly add some bid to or gravy granules. Put into oven proof dish top it off with layer of mashed potatoes place in oven till mashed potatoes are slightly brown
ENJOY.
One of my favourite recipes on UA-cam. Ive back here over the years to make shepherds pie. Your excitement for dish is part of what makes it so good!
How did you get the gravy.

Thank you for this recipe! Made this tonight, so good! Added crescent roll dough to bottom of the pan for a nice crust. Everyone had second helpings... We love what you do here in Gettysburg!
Did you brown the crust before pouring the meat mixture into the pan?
What was the method for using the crescent rolls 🤔 because I was totally thinking "a crust would be divine" 😍😍😍🙌👌💯 did you cook it partially first or 🤷
Hey, PhillyBoyJay; I made your Shephard's Pie tonight for my wife... fantastic; she loved it, and so did I.

I have made this so many times! This is the Best and Easy to make. Bonus is You. Love your style. ❤
I have made this so many times for my family and your recipe works. Love it.
I like how u thoroughly season your dishes.
This is the way my Mom made it- and she called it Shepherd's Pie too... ( I would never correct my Mom.) Thumb's up PhillyBoyJay. 👍🏼
I don't get the big- argument over calling it Cottage Pie. We don't herd sheep/ lamb much in the US. lols...
Jay, I've made this twice now, just as you suggest and man, it is a homerun. Thank you Jay.
I make it this way all the time probably the best Shepard’s pie I’ve ever made and tasted and that includes restaurants. Well done !!
Apparently after watching the video and reading all the comments, this dish is Philadelphia style Cottage Pie 😍
True Irish would never ruin a meal this way. (My wife is from 🇮🇪 Ireland.)
I suggest draining the ground beef after browning, it's fat not juice.
Kim La Gory us blacks love the fat
No, just skip you're sweet, if you're worried about calories,
The grease bothers my stomach, have to drain. 🙂
It's actually a mixture of fat and the moisture that is naturally occuring in the meat along with the moisture added by the store or butcher.
That's exactly what it is.
here in the UK what you have prepared was cottage pie, by using beef. as we make shepherds pie with Lamb or Mutton.
my husband absolutely enjoyed this. I enjoy your recipes, they r detailed an they always come out exactly from your instructions. Thank you
Dude is awesome, talks regular not down to people. Humorously animated too. Love to be friend of this guy, imagine how mush fun a dinner party would be w him.
My grandparents were born in Ireland. My mom made Shepard's pie from the leftovers from a roast beef dinner. Mom made the best gravy from everything she cooked ( fried chicken, beef roast, meatloaf...) you name it. Mom used the leftover sliced beef, veggies. mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm looking forward to making your version with ground beef. Also, I make a mashed potatoes with cream cheese, sour cream, minced garlic, thinly sliced green onion and a pad of butter and paprika sprinkled on top.
I have watched this video many times! I have made it at least 5 times! It is awesome. Thank you so much!
Love to add shredded cheese on top of the mashed before baking. I can't wait to try your version.
Please never stop making cooking videos. Your personality is so much fun and original and infectious! A lot of people can’t say the W sauce haha “Wustah - shear “ if you can imagine saying it like that lol can you make custard pudding next ?!
ive been trying for years to get the same taste in the mincemeat sauce as my grandmother but she isn't around to ask , and the way you make your mash potatoes omg , i thought i made the best mash potatoes but now seeing this video , has made my mouth water , and im dashing out now to go shopping , i hope mine turns out as well as yours , thanks for the great tips .from sunny spain ,

Hey PhillyBoyJay!!! I just made this today from how you showed me and I was Off The Chain!!! I’m so happy. I followed your recipe for the turkey on Thanksgiving and it was🔥!!! Made this for my family and we were OBSESSED!!! Thank you ❤❤❤ Best ever!
Shepherd Pie was called this because it was made of the leftover lamb (and gravy) from the Sunday roast minced up. Beef was never used.
Absolutely 5 stars!!! We do not make this any other way, but your way now!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Made it today-very yummy-sent some to my friends family, they really enjoyed it.
Also gave some to my dog and he liked it so much, he flipped his dish over in case there was some more under it!
I like this recipe too....also, very easy to prepare.
PS: Worse-stir- sheer is how it’s pronounced 🙂

What a great looking shepherd’s pie. What a great idea to add cream cheese and egg yolk to the spuds. I didn’t realize you could add frozen peas and carrots to it. Thats one step ill be able to eliminate from now on. I will comment again when Ive trued it. Thanks for a great video!

Lol! I chuckled...I feel him thou..cuz I have that issue =D
FYI: It's pronounced "wush-dur-shurr"
@@slickstretch6391 That is incorrect. Obviously, you are not from England or if so, do not know how to make the correct pronunciation either. For example, in UK English the last part is pronounced Sheer or Shur, depending on the county and district the pronouncer comes from but it definitely not SHIRE as everybody from the US says.
'nuf sed. plamuk aka travellingchef.
This looks delicious.
Just a quick side note. Shepherds pie is made with minced lamb, (Shepherds=lambs). What you've made is Cottage Pie. Or at least in England that's how it is. Xx
Yes it is Cottage Pie.Thankyou for Correcting that.
Worcester Sauce.!
@@shirleyhelms1105 I love Worcester sauce. ❤️
Here in the States, it is Shepherds pie
I don’t care I always call it Shepherds pie no matter what it’s made of.
I'm from Philly, and you make me miss home with that Philly accent.
I have been watching this video over 5 years making this it's so good
I made this last week, followed to a T except I drained the grease came out DELISH!
While I was watching it I'm thinking , he's gonna drain it and OMG he didn't ! Like you I would drain it, but I would leave a little bit for flavor. I also would use frozen peas (they stand up better) and have fresh carrot with fresh corn off the cob if in season, but frozen corn on the cob works too. Fresh veggies are the best in it.
Have never tried the cr.cheese in it, debating on that, also the parm ch. Do like the yolk in mash pots. I haven't made Shep pie in yearzzz
Philly Boy's looks great though. My Mom used to make it sometimes with bacon in it. She'd fry it separate and break it up and would put 2-3 tbls bacon grease into the hamburger when cooking it, bacon was added when cooking meat is complete and save some for the top, that was back in the 60-70's.
But she also would drain almost all of the grease off the meat. Here's a good tip if onions are really liked in your family before putting the pots on top sprinkle with raw chopped onions on top then the pots. My family wanted a really good sprinkling, the onions do cook but still have a nice crunch. I have also made with chic instead of the hamburger.
I'd cook the chicken and then shred while I cooked the veggies with seasoning and juice from 2 cans stewed tomatoes. Chic gets added after season veggies and st. toms juice has reduced to about I/2, less or more depends on how much gravy you like, add cornstarch slurry before veggies are done, let thicken simmer a bit more before continuing. Don't want veggies to turn to mush. Veggies will finish cooking in oven.
You can omit adding Tom's all together and use only juice I'd take only 2-4 Tom's and chop into sm. pieces (would add Tom's when mixture is taken off the stove). Let it thicken (before adding chic+toms)and simmer a bit for flavors to marry. Remove from heat, add chic+toms let it sit to marry together for 20-30 mins. Put pots on and cook in oven at 350° for about 30-40 mins, want pots to have a nice crust, can put under broiler to finish off crusting so as not to overcook if not browned+crusty to your liking. Hope I explained it well enough haven't made this in a long time.
Happy cooking !!! ☮️🙏💜
@@lululuna1224 g
That's right, drain that shit!! 😂
Would you still need to add the slurry if you drain the beef?
@@lululuna1224 u think like me
PBJ note 1/4 tsp of baking soda added when cooking the potatoes makes them incredibly fluffy, try it next time you make mashed, you'll be surprised.
Also (not to be rude), the original recipe (Irish) called for ground mutton which gives you the "sheep" part of "shepherds". (They couldn't afford beef back then).
However that is old school and I prefer beef by far, as sheep is very gamy, many people call the beef version "cottage pie"
Awesome recipe though.
