In this video, Scott breaks down the 2 5 1 chord progression and explains what it is, how it works, and how to solo over top of it. The 2 5 1 is without a doubt one of the most common chord progressions in jazz music, and after watching this video you will know how to solo over top of it!

This is a very underrated channel, which deserves much more respect and love
We're getting there!!
Rarely heard such a full and rich sound coming from an alto. Massive sound!
Thanks!!
I am so grateful for this. You are the king of clarity!!
Thanks David!
Well done Scott, this video is very simple and easy to grasp the concept to the 2 5 1 progression.
You're a great teacher. Picked up my tenor sax after a 25 year hiatus and your videos are incredibly helpful!
Tenor sax squad
Your videos are so much better than any of the jazz guitar ones out there.
Brilliant way to demonstrate the tricks of the trade of improvisation. Thank you Scott!
I find your explanations very good. I like how you explain the concepts concisely, yet with sufficient to make it possible for a person with minimal music theory (like me) to understand the principals - appreciate the effort you have made and am learning. Thank you fr the effort you have made in putting these videos together.
I still go back to this video once in a while. Thank you Scott. You really are the Yoda of Saxophone. 👍
Thank you!
You’ve got great tone. It’s almost electric how it brings funk and bebop together and makes your music feel alive, even when you’re just playing example scales. Nice vibrato too!
Wow, thank you!
love this! you are busting one mystery after another. damn! where were you 27 years ago!!!
Absolute the best saxophone learning videos! Keep it up!
Thanks John!!

Your lessons rock Scott.
Good going Scott keep doing what u are doing.

Your lessons really help me understand the theory but more than that your musicality and teaching style makes me want to play. I'm about to go practice right now. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad they are helping to motivate :-)
As usual Scott your explanation of 2-5-1 really cleared things up!
Hey! Glad that it all makes sense now :-). I've got a fun one coming up on triad pairs tomorrow.
Thank you this was the least confusing 2 5 1 explanation ever
Thanks Ed... I like to keep it simple. Just put one up about the BLUES PROGRESSION. Check it out.

Thanks bro....really helpful. God bless you 😇🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for breaking this down. Awesome.
👍👍👍
Hi Scott! Blessings here from South Africa ;) Just wanna say that got super-awesome teaching skills man! thanx and well done buddy!!!
Thanks Emile!!
Another way to think about this is to play the one (Ionian) scale over the entire progression HIGHLIGHTING the 1, 3, 5 and 7 Notes of the other chords as they go by, but sticking to that single Ionian scale. So technically, you're making the changes MODALLY but only having to THINK within that single scale. This is especially great if you know the ionian scale all over the fingerboard, then just focus on the chord tones for each chord in the progression.
Great video lesson. Nice one
Thanks!
Nice practice Scott
Very well explained 👏🏾
Thanks!
Awesome thanks!!
Great tuturial
Simply amazing

Fantastic
really helpful!
FINALLY! This makes sense
Yeah, once you see how it all works together, it is a lot easier to figure out.
Great video thanks! Do you have a next step video? Like more advanced approaches to 2-5-1s ?
Hey Reece, I have an entire improv course in my Sax School that takes you step by step through 2 5 1s, tonal centers, transitioning between chords, and minor 2 5 1s. Check it out: www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com
so helpful thanks for explaining it very well so that we can understand it easily :))
Glad you found it helpful!
I'm gonna work on it & practice my Saxophone Lesson on tomorrow when I get out the doctor's office
Thanks
Love your vids Scott!
Subscribed. Will pass on to friends.
Awesome, thank you!
"Moooodes". Once you hear it you can't unhear it

Thanks William!!
Nice
U the best scott!!
👍👍👍
Really helpful, Hello from Indonesia
Hi! Thanks.
Muy buen tutorial muchas gracias.... Por favor en español la traducción
muchas gracias saludos desde chile
science for me, thank you
A fantastic no nonsense explanation. I've been over thinking this concept. Many thanks awesome stuff!
Hey Rob! Yeah, when you break it down to the bare bones it's pretty simple. Often times people go way overboard when just trying to teach what a basic 2 5 1 is. There are all kinds of more elaborate ways to play over it, but the basics are just dorian, mixolydian and ionian in the major scale.
Great stuff Scott you did recommend ,Sax books ,ie yours was one , but I cant find your video .as for me I have a whole shop full ,not saying they are the right stuff as so much good and bad to choose from ,your recommendations would be greatly appreciated .cheers .it appears you hard blow ,hitting the note out, as to compared to soft blowing ,ie Stan Getz style .you have to be able to hard blow first .and then you can soft blow . Thanks all the same .
You too good.
Hi Scott, love the videos, could you do one on the I IV V blues scale, I just love that spooky sound.
I already did. It's called how to improvise over the blues.
Sir please describe how to harmonise on the song in saxophone thank you..❤❤❤
That's a good idea for a video! I'll put it on the list.
Scott how do you get such a great tone quality?
i dont like naming my scales by modes instead i like the allan holdsworth way of using glyphs it makes more sense.
I'm not familiar with that, but use whatever works to make them easier :-)
Thanks gave me what I've been looking for. But how do you play a chord as a scale please
I've done a bunch of videos on that. Check out my videos based on improv. I also cover it step by step in my Sax School if you're looking for a really easy and guided way to learn how to improvise check out: www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com

Fill up on the Good Stuff Scott
Nice! I'm hooked to your channel! I just couldn't figure out the notes of the 'ii-V-I Scale' as you call it. A bit confused there. Want to print a study music sheet with them.
ii - V - I scale in the key of C. All of the scales are based on the notes in the C major scale.
1 = C D E F G A B C (just the notes in your C scale)
2 = D E F G A B C D (just the notes in your C scale, BUT starting on the 2nd note in the scale (D) instead of the 1st (C).
5 = G A B C D E F G (just the notes in your C scale, BUT starting on the 5th note in the scale (G) instead of the 1st (C).
So the scale goes....
UP THE 2 = D E F G A B C D / DOWN THE 5 = G F E D C B A G / UP THE 1 = C D E F G A B D C (enclose the C to make it sound cooler).
Hope that helps!
I practice each day and not as good as you yet but hold on I am comming
😁😁
Thanks again for your great work Scott.. was wondering if your take on some pentatonic patterns (major or minor) with a bit voice leading over common progressions would of interest to others apart from me?.. Cheers and thanks again..
"Mowd"
Ha Scott. Can you leave the written notes that are on screen. On longer so I can write them down. Great lesson
Pause button :-). I usually have to take down one set of notes to put up the next.
Thanks! I'm just getting back into sax, how do you get that nice buzzy tone? What mouthpiece do you use? Thanks again, Peter
It's all about the air flow and breath support. I play a Barkley Brazil Kustom Pop 7 blue
Great stuff as always your a good teachers I have a question on the 2 5 1 progression how long do you play each bar ik in blues 1 4 5 progression first bar 4 times is it the same for 2 5 1
2 5 1 depends on the song, but there are two most common ways.
2 / 5 / 1 / 1 (2 gets one measure, 5 gets one measure, 1 gets two measures)
2 5 / 1 (2 gets half a measure, 5 gets half a measure. 1 gets a full measure)
Hi Scott, for improvising and select the appropriate 2-5-1, we need to know the key of the tune?
Thanks .
Umm. not really. I mean, you have to know the key of the tune just to play it :-). But there will be 2 5 1s in songs that are not based on the key signature of the song. You know what 2 5 1 to play by reading the chords. And besides just learning you 2 5 1s, a really good indicator is when the progression is: minor 7th, dominant 7th, major 7th. That is almost always a 2 5 1. The 2 5 1 is a very specific chord progression that is in tons and tons of jazz tunes, but you can't just play a 2 5 1 in the original key of the song anywhere you want. It has to fit the specific 2 5 1 that is written in the chord progression. Hope that explains it a bit better for you.
very clear Scott as always...thanks a lot. hopefully to get some skype lessons with you!
hey! how can e recognize the progression when we see it on a chart? will the symbols always look like that?
If you see a minor chord, followed by a dominant 7th chord, followed by a major chord there is a 98.9999% that it is a 2 5 1. There are patterns all over the place in music.
do u know your mowwwd
😁😁

This is great!!!
Hey Scott, your explanation is so good!! thank you so much!! :D
