Wow
So much useful information in just under 6 min!
Very efficient teacher!
Thanks’!!!
first video to watch and am so impressed with your teaching.... like sub...and i wanna see more..!
and i love the fact that you tell the truth especially the beginners that it will take time to get things right coz i know teaching sax yourself is hard
Thanks Scott! I needed this instruction.
achei ótima a sua explicação grato muito obrigado
I like your no-nonsense explanation.
muchas gracias, fácil y efectivo ejemplo.
the advanced embouchure is the only way I can play with out hurting my lip the beginner embouchure is painful I guess its because I have big lips but I didn't know how to roll my lip out in a way that wouldn't squawk, but your little trick fixed the pain!!! I'm not used to worrying about my teeth while playing because I came from paying the jazz trombone for 4 years and before that I was playing marching / concert tuba . So far I'm at day 3 with my first alto and surprisingly its quickly becoming more comfortable in my hands. thanks for the video cant wait to see the rest and more.
Hey, if you're just getting started with the sax, you should check out my Sax School it will get you headed in the right direction pretty quickly www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com
This was really helpful!
Thanks for this useful tips, very helpful
👍👍👍
Thank you so much!!
EXCELLENT instruction for beginner!
👍
How can I get a big sound on the alto sax while My mouth would still be in the cushion position?
Cool! Thanks!
Excellent.
I use your techniques for my students.
Insightful
Thanks
I will try this tonight. Just moved up in reed strength, so might as well add this now.
Cool! Also, don't feel like moving up in reed strength is better. Find a reed size that feels good when you play on it. A size higher doesn't mean that you are progressing. I use a 2.25 😁
I have just started playing again after 34 years. Years ago I played on a Rico Royal 3. Earlier this week I moved to a Legere 2.5 from a 2.0. In my mind I should get back to a 3. Yesterday I tried your new embouchure, with the 2.5. The sound was a raw mix of fingernails on a chalk board, the sounds of a cat hit by a car, and hints of brilliance. It wasn’t my finest hour. Tonight was a major improvement, but I fatigued quickly. This new embouchure seems louder, and requires a lot of air. I think I might be taking in more mouthpiece than before.
This is the biggest problem to play Fantastic information
I hv this problem
Learning from Last 6 months at the age of 59
Yeah. Now I get it.
Faz um vídeo de como tocar como profissional , como ter um som profissional
Think you are just great at teaching
Thery good démonstration
Thanku for this video
very helpful Scot but the video sound dies while you are explaining in some areas. did not bother me so much but i thought i will let you know this.
What is your set up? Cause I have tried the jazz embouchure but still can’t get that sound. I am not sure if it’s the reed or mouthpiece or even both.
Hi Scott .....I'm a new beginning in sax 🎷 it's being 3 month's i started learning ...but I'm unable to get the perfect sound or good sound ..... while I'm playing I can hear cracking sound or kind of other sound that's makes unpleasant sound
When I play with the first type my bottom lip always hurts a lot and has teeth ridge marks on it. How can I prevent this ? Is this normal?
Teeth ridges are normal. You don't want to bite down though, just firm pressure to keep the mouthpiece secure. If your lip hurts you're either biting down to much or your reed is to hard.
Hui, sounds like your embouchure isn't strong enough yet. As the lip muscles build, they will become the main part of your embouchure and your jaw muscles will just be providing control of the movement. Thereafter it will only be towards the end of long tiring sessions that your teeth will dig into your lip.
Thanks soo much for great advice Sir. Was wondering do you ever use any sort of teeth guard for your bottom teeth when playing the sax for a long time? I find my bottom lip pains me after a while.
Hey Dave, when my lip starts to hurt I just stop practicing :-). I don't use teeth guards on the top, or paper or guards for my bottom lip.
Thanks! James H
Thank you so much James!!
Existential doubt ... what am I doing wrong if as I keep playing, my embouchure gets irremediable tense so it's like if I could not have a total control over it?? Is it just matter of practice and getting my embouchure trained, or am I definitely doing something wrong??
I've been playing for 20 years but was taught the classical embouchure. I want to try the rolled out lip to improve my tone but I can't tell if I'm doing it right. What should the bottom teeth feel like? I feel like mine scrape against the inside of my lip and it's extremely uncomfortable!
Can you show me the jazz embouchure? I love jazz music
Hola desde perú! Buen sonido con la Barkley, pero que caña usas?
Barkley Brazil Kustom Pop 7 Blue.
Hey Scott, when the lips are rolled out, am I correct to say that it actually feels like I’m sort of pouting?
That's how my old teacher use to describe it as a pouty lower lip!
Being living in Squawk City for too long. It's time to move to Big Sax City.
When playing with the bottom lip rolled out, my intonation was all over the place and my lips get tired very easily. I am unable to hold the embouchure for more than a few minutes of playing. Is this normal? Will it will gradually improve with more practice?
Sounds like you're rolling it too far. Without your sax, pull your bottom lip up so it's in front of your top teeth. Now, pull your bottom lip back until you can feel the top of the lip muscle pressing up against your upper teeth. That's the part of your lip you want to press against the reed. You might need to practice this exercise a bit until you know what that feels like to replicate it with the sax.
Hi Scott,
Great video!
Just a little question ... I understand that the teeth do not touch the reed. The bottom lip is rolled out ... but completly ? Does the inside of the bottom lip just rest against the front of the teeth, or a part is still on top of the lips? And if so, how to find the right amount?
Thx for all your videos!
Hey Charles, the bottom lip is rolled out a lit bit, so the fat part of the lip is still between you teeth and the reed. Start off just by rolling it a little and it will feel more comfortable as you do it.
@@ScottPaddock Thank you!
I'm.new with this I need help do u think that u can teach me Scott????
Every time I play my sax I get squack and stuff. How do I get a better more consistent clean tone? What is the best embrochure for Jazz?
There are many things that could cause that. Everything from a broken sax, to the wrong size reed, and anything in between. As far as embouchure I did a video on it not to long ago, check it out.
3:05 the weAHeasy
what alto sax is that? I looking to invest/buy one...
Hey! It's a P. Mauriat 67RX Influence. I did a gear video on it. Check it out!
Trying to make a noise on my new Tenor, we’ll see how it goes
Good luck Josh! If you want to make some fast progress, check out the Beginner Course in my Sax School - you'd be amazed at how quickly you can get started with some step by step instructions www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com
When you roll out your bottom lip, do you roll it out so there is zero bottom lip over your teeth? Or, just some? If so, about how much? Thanks Scott! I just love your sound!
Start off by just rolling it out a little, and as you get more comfortable try rolling a little more, but your lip should always be between your teeth and the reed.
@@ScottPaddock Great! Thank you. That is what i have been doing. A few days ago, i bit my lower lip (eating), so it's been sore, but healing. I play anyway, trying different lip-rolling-out positions. lol
so teeth wont touch the reed in second embouchure right?
Correct. The teeth should never touch the reed.
If the teeth touch the reed you will get a very unpleasant sound
The teeth touching the reed is best for sneaking up behind somebody and blowing hard while sliding the teeth back and forth along the reed.
Hey!
Can you say a little about V-position?
Is it your first method in this video?
I mean Joe Allard’s concept,Michael Brecker played with his concept)
Thanks
I don't use the V position so I couldn't really tell you much about it.
Scott Paddock ok thanks!
Hey Scott, i'm a beginner and i'm wondering when I should change my reed strength. Is there any signs I should be looking for? I'm currently on my second year playing my Alto and i'm on a 2.5.
Elizabeth the stronger the reed the easier and brighter the high notes will be. Usually for jazz. The lower the reed, the more colorful your sound will be.
Elizabeth I'm a third year jazz saxophonist
The way you know it's time to move up in reed strength is if you start loosing the sound from time to time. You will start feeling like it's impossible to control your sound, and you will completely loose it after playing for a while nonstop. It's really hard to explain, but trust me, you will notice this yourself.
I play a 2.25. You may not need to move up in strength :-). The way you know is that your reed feels weak from the beginning (like it does after you've played on if for a while). Also, you can't project. The high notes get a little flat. And the sax just cuts out on you sometimes. If those things are happening try the next size up and see if it seems easier to play. BUT there is no "professional reed size" so the higher the reed size doesn't mean the better the reed. For example. On alto I play a 2.25, soprano 2.75. and tenor a 3.25. It all comes down to what gives you the most control with the best sound.
Anyone knows the name of the song played at the beginning?
All the Things You Are
@@melaneymiller6636 thanks a lot!
I have a question. When people say that the teeth touch the reed in a classical embouchure, do they mean that literally? Or do they mean that it presses on it through the lips?
Also, are my teeth supposed to be touching my bottom lip in the jazz embouchure? Because that's what I'm doing and do get a massive tone increase, but it's a lot harder for me to play high notes. Is this normal?
Your teeth should never touch the bottom of the reed no matter what embouchure or style you area playing except for beatbox sax... they do all kinds of crazy stuff. Get your tongue up higher in your mouth saying the word eeeeeeeeeeee and those higher notes will pop right out.
Scott Paddock Thanks for responding, but how come I sound so much worse when I record myself on my phone? I have an iphone 7 if that matters.
How much do your lessons typically cost per hour? I checked your site and couldn't find a flat rate
