  • In this video, Dr Sue covers steroids and cancer patients, including why we use them, what cancers they are effective for, what are the side effects, and why you should NOT start them right away if your dog has lymphoma.
Cats are different than dogs when it comes to steroids. Dr Sue explains why you can start steroids for cat lymphoma, but which steroid is better in cats.
The most common oral steroid is prednisone, and the most common cancers we use it it for are lymphoma in dogs and cats and mast cell tumors. Dr Sue also covers how they work, side effects and drugs to avoid if your dog is prescribed them.
Stay tuned for part 2 where she will be answering your questions on steroids and cancer in pets.

Thank you sooooo much for the info. My poor baby was diagnosed with cancer in the stomach which has some tumors. I was given many recommendations by my vet how to proceed, since surgery to remove the tumors isn't going to guarantee a great quality of life and due to financial constraints we decided to take the PrednisoLONE recommendation. My Lulu is an 8 year old short hair tabby cat, she was perfectly fine with no signs at all about anything funny, it just all came on within a week when she stopped eating and was vomiting all the time, nothing stays down. I knew something was wrong, she lost a lot of weight within a 1 week period hardly could stand and had bowel movement troubles. After coming home with the meds and giving it to her, within 3 hours she was actually up and moving about, it was amazing since she was sleeping or lying down all the time prior to the diagnosis. I'm not sure how long she will last, as every cat is different, without sounding selfish I hope this helps her and maybe by some miracle she'll pull through even though her diagnosis is bleak. But you video was very informative and helped me make some great decisions for my fur baby and my family, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

She is convinced, rightly or wrongly, that it is the worst one. We are not convinced bearing in mind it is only a 44% chance. But our 11 yr old white GSD is coughing occasionally so hope it has not spread to his lungs. But he eats well loves running after the balls etc. The sad decision day will have to be faced. The third GSD we've lost, but he's had a great life. Langton x

My dog had an MRI after showing Ataxia and Nystagmus symptoms. The neurologist concluded she was having mini strokes. She was given prednisone to lower inflammation. It worked on the ataxia for a week, then she started having balance problems even after doubling the dose. After 35 days of prednisone I had a second opinion from another neurologist to read the MRI. This one believes my dog is not having strokes, but has cancer. She recommended I see an Oncologist and get another MRI done.
Last week her Dr switcher her Prednisone to Dexamethasone because they think the cancer may of figured prednisone out.
Is my dog screwed now to get chemotherapy? Any suggestions? I’m so scared my dog doesn’t have long without treatment.

For an 11 y/o FS DSH cat that may have either IBD or small cell lymphoma (abdominal ultrasound denoted "mild" infiltration of the ileum, along with a potential vacuolar hepatopathy) -- how long can they safely remain on steroids (say 1.25 mg every other day, for a 3.16 kg patient)? I would work up my cat further, (to distinguish between IBD and SCL) but do not want to put her through the process of a surgical biopsy of the ileum. She has vomited about 1x/week for years, and was always a small, thin cat. Otherwise, she has no symptoms.

My cat was put on prednisolone 4 months ago. We’ve tapered it down to 0.5ml every 4 days and our vet said she would have to be on it for the rest of her life to prevent her coughing fits/asthma attacks. However, she has a coughing episode once or twice between the 4 days but seems completely fine after. I would prefer not to increase dosage due to side effects and am wondering if an inhaler would be better since it would be more targeted to her airways.

@Dr Sue Cancer Vet: Thank you for your videos. At 8:30, you mention mast cell tumors + Prednisone but you don't explicitly say if Pred kills the cells (like lymphoma) or is just an anti-inflammatory. My vet presented an option to use Pred to shrink the MCT prior to surgery to get a cleaner margin in a tough location so I posed the idea to the surgeon specialist and she agreed to do it. However, she'll be doing the abdominal ultrasound the morning of the surgery after 9 days of Pred and I'm worried the Pred will mask any potential disease spread. Is my concern legit? Also, he's on Benedryl which has reduced the overall size so is Pred as an anti-inflammatory overkill?

So we knew something was wrong . But the vet suspects does lymphoma They, AT FIRST have her 3 weeks!!!!!! Theþn with fluids steroids and anti nasua and she's still going. He wouldn't have even known she was sick. Now I'm starting to see she's slowing down just a little bit. We realized that our dog was breathing heavily and took him to the vet. Took a xray of the chest and it showed that he had many white spots showing in both lungs. Vet said it may be pneumonia or lung cancer... and just prescribed us with zeniquin antibiotic and prednisone. After trying to read up on the situation, I'm not sure I want to give my dog prednisone steroids without knowing what he really has. So for today, we gave him the antibiotics and plan to talk to our vet again and discuss before giving him steroids. Fantastic videos, thank you for all of the information (Been watching them non-step for several hours now :) )
Question for you: My 12 year old pup was just diagnosed with lymphoma.
We initially brought him in to our vet as he was not eating - the vet did a preliminary blood test and found that his platelet count was under 5,000. They likely guessed ITP to be the culprit and put him on steroids for several days to suppress his immune system to bring this count back up so he didn't bleed out on us. More testing was done to see if there was an underlying reason for ITP or if the auto-immune disorder was the primary cause. They did an ultrasound and tested the lumps and found Lymphoma to be the underlying cause...
In a scenario with that low of a platelet count, was there an alternative solution to steroids? How would you have handled this? I'm waiting on a call from the oncologist who saw him to discuss our options and wanted to have my ducks in a row.
Thanks again for everything - best of luck with all you do!

As far as your list of reasons you might not want to start steroids right away. What about the idea that its going to nuke the immune system? Maybe its better to try to help the immune system first before nuking it? What is your opinion on this theory?

It's with great privilege as I introduce a permanent solution to cancer with Dr Erayo on UA-cam, it's a one time medication and it doesn't require chemotherapy nor steroids.

change his diet... don't give him the dogs food that we buy.. better cook for him chicken or fish, shrimps ... don't give him simple carbs so the cancer cells won't have food to keep on growing

I am thankful my dog will do this but I have had many many dogs who will not. They will take the butter and spit out the pills! One dog I had would eventually swallow the pills but would make us go through one thing after another, like sausage and cupcakes and things like that. (yes I know that includes stuff dogs sometimes shouldn't have but if it's a lifesaving med, they're taking it however I can get it in there) Peanut butter seems to work now, and one dog who is the worst about pills will absolutely take a pill easier if he thinks there is a chance our other dog will snatch it up from him. Greed prevails in those cases.
But we've done cream cheese, we've hidden things in all kinds of stuff, and sometimes had to cut them and hide them really well. But yes, for some dogs, butter is a good one. Or soft cheeses, or even hard cheese. I've made little holes in things and then refilled them with the pill and the stuff I dug out. Growing up my mom took no nonsense from a dog, and would grab them and stuff the pill into their mouths, hold their mouth in her hand and rub the dog's throat until they swallowed. Oh, and one more thing that helped was doing all of this out of sight of the dog. If he sees me sticking a pill into anything he runs.

I would never use prednisone on an animal or human.... it is a cruel medicine. There are always kinder alternatives to help bring comfort. Vet prescribed prednisone for my cat. We're using melatonin vit d vit k2 and curcumin after researching & having +++ response. Hospice mode when it's time is kinder than some treatments. Don't be selfish ❤ This lady is a drug pusher

True, I treated my cat with prednisone and it died very fast in a little more than 2 months, treating tumours isn't even a hard thing to do, with good/clean diet with proteins, fats, vitamin D and D3 from the Sun, magnesium/potassium rich foods like cruciferous vegetables that help strengthen the immune and help sleep (which in consequence help the animal recover more efficiently and faster) the tumours start to shrink rapidly, that along with oleocanthal found in virgin extra olive oil and ginger which are anti-cancer, the first reduces size of superficial tumors rapidly in less than 1 hour in real time if you apply heat to the zone and if it's not a tumour deep within the surface of the skin, I also know about autophagy preparation before you start the process and till you get it of fasting for 2-3 days, so that normal cells cannibalize cancer cells to have fuel to surivive, I studied more than 150 webpages finding all this information and researched Dr. Thomas Seyfried which he expanded from the Otto Warburg theories, he now have more than 200 peer review papers about cancer, unfortunately I trusted my veterinarian, and I can't blame her, she was doing the best she knew, now I can only use all this information to treat (cure if you will) cancer in the future, so not everything was bad.
I also learn that we can buy dietary supplements for pets with liver (to cure jandice for example) and kidney problems, and it's very effective to treat them, in fact, in some of the products I reviewed there were people that said "Thank you, my veterinarian recommended me this product for my pet with liver problems", unfortunately many veterinarians don't know about them because it's not in their competences to know about such remedies, at least not in their careers, so they have to investigate, and some do and some don't, I couldn't save my cat, but I definitely save my next cat now that I know all this information, I will never use prednisone on any animal nor human ever again, in the worst case the natural remedies won't cause toxicity in the animal, and even more importantly, they won't make their immune system depressed, unlike drugs, we need the immune system to fight cancer.
