TALES FROM NERDVILLE by Joe Bonamassa
TOOLS OF THE TRADE, PART 11
For Joe Bonamassa, the Gibson SG was a guitar that took him about 30 years to figure out. For the longest time, he wasn’t able to get on with SGs. Joe found that the balance of the instrument always felt a little off - they were often headstock-heavy - and often sounded a little too bright for his taste. But that all changed one day when he decided, “I’m going to commit to getting it together on the SG, and the best way to do that is to start performing with it.”

the counterweight of that Bigsby offsets the neck dive

I love how light they are in comparison to a LP yet still have that nice thick sound🎸

Totally agree. I have a '61 reissue made in 2008 that I got from Norm's and I just love it. Mine does not have a Bigsby though. That is still on my wish list!

@@tSxO44 The finish and neck look just like Tony's but mine has humbuckers and a different bridge. Still sounds great though!

I loved my 65 SG Standard. I think one of the things about that era SG is that they used plastic bridge saddles and that made the attack/decay parameters unique to that instrument. VERY playable guitar and boy do I wish I still had it!

I play my 61 SG through an 18 inch speaker (Celestion, G18C) via a 66 JTM45. The overall sound is fuller, you get more bottom end and the trebble is not spiky even at ten. It would be worth a try ...

Oh yeah Joe, amazing how close it sounds to a traditional LP with that Tone down to 5. Amazing

The SG is Gibson’s attempt to be more fender. Not so thick and dark as an original LP but easier to hold and move around the fretboard with.
Also: The SG balance is the headstock below the knee like Angus. The V balance pulls the headstock up so you play like the Schenker, and the Explorer is horizontally balanced so it sits straight like Hetfield. The Les Paul drags your neck down like Jimmy Page.

Hey Joe,there's this guy in ny with a store called music zoo. Think his name is Colletti. Anyway ,he made his own guitars and I thought if you. They going between strat and les paul sounds and everything in-between. You might love it. He's a nerd and no detail was too small... Then again, you may hate it. However, I think you should check one out if you can.

I put a .020 cap on my SG neck pup. (.015 on my LP). Bridge gets something a little more beefy than a .022. A .028 is usually what I find.

    Hi Joe,
I'm digging the lap-steel over your right shoulder and am thinking, hey, I've got an early 50's Gibson BR-9 lap-steel (51,52?) originally sold in Batavia, NY. It's a very cool piece that gets very little play. Maybe you'd be interested in it? If nothing else, it shares a lot of parts with some iconic instruments.
