He's definitely one of those guys who has aged well in looks as well, and maybe most importantly, in style. He's styling himself in a way that accentuates the best parts of his older appearance. In this and in a recent performance I saw he is so dapper, managing to look rockstar in a stylish suit. He of course is still "taking it off" at times, but even then he's kept himself in a good form. But yeah, he's not trying to be 20, 30 or even 40.... he's being a 60 year old rockstar in a "stylin'" manner rather than reaching for ill-fitting "youthfulness".
Someone said that Dave represented life and Martin represented death. Dave's crawling around was him trying to be alive. They made Martin up like they did as he represents death. The San Remo performance Martin looked so much better. This song is amazing!! Beautiful!!!! ❤
also, it`s directed by their long-time collaborator director anton corbijn, and it`s inspired by the classic movie ”the seventh seal” by ingmar bergman, where the main character plays chess with death. great song, great video.
The video is based around a classic 1950’s film “ The seventh seal” where a Knight has to play against Death at Chess and if he wins he keeps his life. Great song!
I'm going to be completely honest! I didnt really know this man... But as i'm slowly making my way through DM's songs and such. I'm starting to learn about Fletch and his impact... Truly sad :(
Dave said in an interview that he thought crawling around in a grave yard would be humorous and their producer went for the idea. Martin thought it was funny too.
It's unique seeing you jump to this from the late-1980s. Sometimes I forget just how long and epic their time making music has been--43 years! Dave's crawling around the graveyard symbolizes the certainty that we all face --which is death, and how no matter how long we live or the experiences we have, it is still coming one day and it will always be too soon no matter your age. It has a lot to do with Andy Fletcher's death last year I am sure.
Getting old sucks man , They are doing good for their age, in their 60's still doing it. I've lost a few friends in the last few years. It isn't easy seeing your Idols and people you have been fan of most of your life pass away , like Bowie, Fletch, Prince, and many others..
This feeling of pure joy listening and seeing them again and suddenly with the lyrics in mind and not seeing Fletch damn its hard.😭😭. But what a song..another classic from the greatest band ever.
What else to say that even if it is a bit poppy, well it is a brillant catchy song with magnificent lyrics. So glad and proud to see what is left from Depeche Mode back at work for the best. Those are intense and deep feelings that I have inside when listening to this melancholic song...
Seph I feel like you are just at the right point in your DM journey to have seen this one (along with the rest of us)! For me personally, a new DM song hasn't hit this way on first listen since 2005. You're gonna love 90s DM. I'm off to listen to Ghosts again for maybe the 40th time now 🤗
@@stephanandersson8230 you're wrong, there is of course a reference to the movie of Ingemar Bergman but the first reason is that Fletch was a good chess player.

I think that when you see the songs and video clips from the albums Violator, SOFAD, Ultra... your brain will literally explode. There are the biggest hits of the band, plus a great story connected with it. The SOFAD era brought the most hyped rock tour in history and crazy things happened. The next resurrection Dave that's a huge story. Depeche Mode is still alive, in Europe we still have thousands of parties, events, and many groups on Facebook where we discuss and wait for the upcoming tour in Europe. Being a DM fan is much more than just being a fan of something. I look forward to seeing more things, revealing this whole amazing story. Interesting - Never Let Me Down Again, the band's concert anthem to this day, at the end of which at every concert thousands of people wave their hands frantically from side to side like a field being blown by the wind, was heard in the new series The last of Us, and after many years since became one of the biggest hits that even today's youth frantically search for on the Internet. I recommend reading the book Depeche Mode Stripped and Depeche Mode Universe. Maybe you have no idea how interesting this story is and far beyond just music. I look forward to your next videos. Best regards and thank you.
They're aging very well considering all the wear and tear their bodies have had to endure over the years touring. Stuff the average person doesn't experience. The vocals and music is STILL on point ❤️🖤❤️
Love your reaction, and this is the best single in more than a decade! I believe this song is about mortality! Live each day to it's fullest! Martin wrote this song with Richard Butler of The Psychedelic Furs! 43 years on and The Mode still produce quality! Check out pictures of the Seventh Seal for Anton's video inspiration!
Voice is something you should "keep in shape" to sound good, just like any other muscles. Dave and Mart not only still making a legit new album every two-three years, and having many tours and performances in between them, but also have at lest few personal music projects and co-ops like Dave with "Soulsavers". So unlike many ex-top charts musicians, like Pet Shop Boys or ABBA, who performing occasionally on some shows, and doing some "nostalgia tours" every few years, Depeche Mode is still in pretty high demand, almost as big as Rammstein, and always having full stadiums. Can't be more happy for them.
Excellent reaction my friend, so glad you took the years leap forward to Depeche Mode's irrefutably brilliant song *Ghosts Again,* their newest beautifully dark lead single, released from their much anticipated new record, *Memento Mori.* I hope Depeche Mode's stellar "Ghosts Again" track is a strong indication of potential greatness regarding the "Memento Mori" album.
They are definitely taking stock of their own mortality, since Fletch’s passing. And initially I thought that makeup had done a bang up job to make Martin look so old 😳😳🫢🫢 But musically, it’s the dogs bollocks init!? Double Banger - No question
the chess part is certainly inspired by the Seventh Seal by Bergman, where the main character is playing a game of chess with Death itself. So that makes Martin the Death character in the video. The dancing ghost is probably a reference to the Danse Macabre. Then we got the title of the album Memento Mori. So the imagery is pulling from the history of arts quite a lot.
Oh dude, you NEED to listen to their 1993 album Songs of Faith and Devotion, probably their masterpiece. But I genuinely feel that this song is a great indicator as some of their strongest material since the early / mid 90s heyday!
very good reaction, Greetings from Argentina, I see your reactions from Black Celebration and the subtitles help me understand English. I recommend that after Violator you start reacting to the video clips they have, they are quite good, especially the ones from the 90's albums, it would be very good

I think the cane with the skull represents Andy Fletcher. Vaughn George also shared a recent photograph in which they've posed with a skull on a table and one of them at each end of the table. Of course, that photograph has received mix reviews.

Martin is representing here Death and is playing with Dave chess for his life and actually wins because all in all everybody dies. Dave is crawling back to his grave?
Love your reactions. I have a request for you. Since Vince Clarke was one of the founders of Depeche Mode you should react to Erasure videos. And if you want to watch them live you should watch their concert: The tank, the swan and the balloon.
Momento Mori means remember we are mortal. In other words, everyone and everything ends. Even Depeche Mode will end. I have a suspicion that this is their way of saying goodbye to the fans. After this album and tour, they want to spend the time with their families. Stop and smell the roses while they are still alive. As Dave sings, all my FLOWERS. I really like the lyrics about sleep and lullabies. Like Martin, Shakespeare compared sleep to death in Hamlet’s soliloquy,: To die, to sleep; To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause: there's the respect That makes calamity of so long life The imagery of life and death playing chess comes from the 1957 classic movie The Seventh Seal. A knight plays chess with personified Death. If the knight wins, he gets to keep living. If Death wins, the knight will die. If we’re going by the movie, that would make Dave the knight (life) because he’s playing white pieces and Martin is Death because he’s playing black. I also like that their canes match their chess pieces. Dave loses (lays down his king), which is when they go to the graveyard. The graveyard imagery is super compelling to me. When I was about 12, a friend asked me a series of questions, and I never forgot. You’re on a road and you see a cup. What does the cup look like? Is there anything in it? What do you do with it? The cup represents life. There was a key and a book, but I can’t remember what they represented. And at the end, he said, you come to an enormous wall that you can’t go over, under, or around. You can’t turn back. You can’t get through the wall. What do you do? The wall represents death. How you answer is how you’ll face the inevitability of your own mortality. That’s what the graveyard symbolizes to me. Martin is answering that question by sitting down and contemplating his life. He seems wistful and contemplative. Dave has always struck me as being a seeker…he’s already survived death repeatedly, therefore, he’s searching for another way around it. That’s why he’s crawling around looking at the ground. I think he has a more restless approach to Death than Martin, but I resonate with Dave. There is a cityscape behind their chess match that’s mirrored by the gravestones. The ghost is dancing in the graveyard, but looking behind her, that could be gravestones, screaming ghosts (two eyes and a mouth), or could be a representation of the cityscape we saw earlier. Our global health issue has made us all contemplate our mortality and of those we love. Hold your loved ones close and be sure to tell them and show them how important they are to you. Everyone is mortal. Death is the end of all our stories. Of course, this is just one woman’s interpretation. One of the reasons I love Depeche Mode is that it is so much deeper than other bands and can be analyzed in so many different ways.
oh no, you gone off the path Seph. you won`t really understand some of the crap tracks us fans went throgh to apeciate this track so much more. the feeling of them getting back up to form.and missing Andy (and Alan for you, Spoiler lol). It`s a great song tho. I think the Dave crawling is about trying to avoid death. The video is about us all having to deal with death at some point in our own lives. My only critisism of this is the outro could be longer, maybe the bass line differs a bit and drum machine could be a little sharper. but a great song.
@@SephPlays yes, I think most fans would say so. It`s prob there last album and tour as they are getting old now. It seems strange that it`s just Dave and Martin left but the joy that they sound good and relevant still is amazing.
I strongly, if you go to the newest again, to hit the first song on the album My Cosmos is Mine. This entire album reaches back to their early industrial works but throws itself bodily hard into that while still keeping the pop feel they manage to balance but in a 2023-era fit. Their voices sound better than in a while - not that they ever became "bad", just that this album their voices are back up to a peak for them especially for their ages.... people's voices lose their clean edges and delicacy around the mid-30s, for males especially, as you noted.... due to a stiffening of the larynx during that age and as time goes on strength of the controlling muscles in the throat, as you know, too, I don't doubt.... but as said, they seem to have gone through a short period where their voices were being affected a bit and likely worked on them between albums/performances because, well, you heard them. I didn't really care for this song on first hearing... didn't *dislike* it. I thought it was good. But not as strong as it could be for a DM song. But once I sat and listened to the album straight through and heard it in context of it's location between other tracks.... well, that brought forward it's strengths and catchiness for me.. Now I catch myself singing it around. Was doing so all this morning.
Honestly never even heard of DM before i started listening to them here on the channel 😅 so the only songs of theirs i know are the ones ive reacted to already, and ive been very very careful of spoilers in the past 8ish months to not listen to any songs of theirs i haven't done a video on. The only song ive been spoiled on was my secret garden. And that was only the first 5 seconds of the live version. 😅
@@SephPlays Okay, then enjoy the rest. I was disappointed when I first listened to „violator“ back in 1990. But it did not last very long until even I recognized what a masterpiece this was. And Enjoy the silence and Personal Jesus became some of their biggest hits.

You are going to have to put every song on Violator in “S.” Wait till you hear that album!! The Trinity is as follows: Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, and Violator! Some will interchange Black celebration with Songs of Faith and Devotion. Either way, these 3 or 4 are considered the best writing by Martin EVER!! Check Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion out and get back to us! 😊
Hello buddy 👋 I like it I've heard it 😁 well you need to jump in front to listen to Duran Duran invisible you need to wear a gud pair of head phones ok to ear 👂 all the instruments passing from one to the other well jumping from side to side ok enjoy
Notice Sacred in your bottom selection Seph - would recommend listening again as it’s actually beautiful. Your S selection is about to be seriously extended with Violator, SOFAD, PTAngel and MMori yet to come!
❤❤❤❤
Hey seph just found a live performance of this on UA-cam from the 3rd of February : )
Great reaction Seph! DM still awesome
Martin is representing here Death and is playing with Dave chess for his life and actually wins because all in all everybody dies. Dave is crawling back to his grave?
Damnnn yeah. Now i kinda see it :D
We Love what you are doing Seph
Thank you ever so much :D
Love your reactions. I have a request for you. Since Vince Clarke was one of the founders of Depeche Mode you should react to Erasure videos. And if you want to watch them live you should watch their concert: The tank, the swan and the balloon.
This is my plan! I do realllyyyy want to listen to Vince's stuffs after DM. I'll get there :D
Since you react live versions too there is a live version of Ghosts Again. Worth to have a look.
Ohh i definitely will!! 😍
R.IP. Andy.....❤
,,, just DM,,,,,, amazing
They’re Depeche Mode, enough said
The chess game inspired by "The Seventh Seal" by Ingrid Bergman where the protagonist plays chess with death.
Ingrid Bergman was a Swedish actress, Ingmar Bergman was a Swedish director😉
@@violator906 Oh shit.. sure... thanks for the correction !
Like Martin, Shakespeare compared sleep to death in Hamlet’s soliloquy,:
To die, to sleep; To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause: there's the respect That makes calamity of so long life
The imagery of life and death playing chess comes from the 1957 classic movie The Seventh Seal.
I like your interpretation. Thanks for sharing.
Never let me down again & just can't get enough 101? 😁
👍👍👍💀🌹💀👍👍👍
Death and life are playing chess. Death won
Their first single after the death of Andy Fletcher. #rip #andyfletcher #ripandyfletcher
Good point but each of them still do solo still which might help keep there voice strong.
This song is written in a major key. Most of dm are in minor keys....
Hy SEPH i dedicate you the same song on reel to reel, hope you enjoy it,,, all i want to do is, see you,,,,,
I think the crawling is a symbol of crawling to his grave…Ghosts Again. That’s my analogy…
oh no, you gone off the path Seph. you won`t really understand some of the crap tracks us fans went throgh to apeciate this track so much more. the feeling of them getting back up to form.and missing Andy (and Alan for you, Spoiler lol). It`s a great song tho. I think the Dave crawling is about trying to avoid death. The video is about us all having to deal with death at some point in our own lives. My only critisism of this is the outro could be longer, maybe the bass line differs a bit and drum machine could be a little sharper. but a great song.
Ohh damn! So this was the best song in quite awhile?
You do not know violator? Never listened to „enjoy the silence“!? Never?
Honestly never even heard of DM before i started listening to them here on the channel 😅 so the only songs of theirs i know are the ones ive reacted to already, and ive been very very careful of spoilers in the past 8ish months to not listen to any songs of theirs i haven't done a video on. The only song ive been spoiled on was my secret garden. And that was only the first 5 seconds of the live version. 😅

Okay, then enjoy the rest. I was disappointed when I first listened to „violator“ back in 1990. But it did not last very long until even I recognized what a masterpiece this was. And Enjoy the silence and Personal Jesus became some of their biggest hits.
They look old, because they are xD
I like your honesty 😍
Они повторяются уже 10 лет , где Алан?
Алан нервно курит в сторонке
This so sad😢
Seriously, where have you been for the past 30 years??? You've missed some of Depeche Mode's best work, and you really MUST listen to Songs Of Faith And Devotion (from 1993). Hey, we're ALL getting old, and we'd all LOVE to be 30 years younger!
Still shocks me how i never heard a song from this band until 9 month ago!! Like WHERE WERE THEY!?
@@SephPlays DM's formula has been to record an album and tour every 4 years, but Memonto Mori was delayed by the global pandemic. You've got a lot of catching up to do 😆
I wish they would invite Alan and he would accept works on their next album and then they can become ghosts again.
