Actually, there is an amazing story, behind Enjoy the Silence. Martin originally, wrote this song as a slow ballad, with a harmonium as instrumental back-up. But Alan Wilder, came up with the idea
to put a beat to it. Martin came up with the guitar riff. Then Alan and the producer Flood, took the song to the studio, and worked the song. And that's how you produce a simple, beautiful and durable synth pop song.

Many of his songs were written in that form. Alan and the producer took them into the stratosphere. Martin is a brilliant lyricist, but Alan Wilder was always the music maestro. When Alan left in 1995 -- well, the difference in sound is night and day after Songs of Faith and Devotion. Not that the post-Wilder era is bad, I actually love Ultra and Playing the Angel, but I still to this day miss his spellbinding musicality.

Enjoy The Silence is timeless. It is iconic, it is heart-warming, it is stunningly beautiful. Among the two biggest hits - this and Personal Jesus - I will always go for this. The subtle beauty of the message of this song and the music itself - I don’t know how they came up with this. I always get chills from the last part, how it slowly builds up, then the choir comes in and I always have this imagery of Dave as the king in front of this huge Swiss mountain. It’s one of this songs of theirs that you never get tired of. Can talk about this one for hours. Love it

Enjoy the silence is a balad with a disco sound. It was Alan’s idea to give it a disco sound. Martin was absolutely against the idea, but Alan and Marc Ellis (producer of violator and SOFAD, a genius btw) kicked everybody out of the recording studio (in the middle of rural Denmark😂) to give it a go. And this is the result.
I can’t remember about the charts in Belgium, but MTV played it every hour for weeks on end (also thanks to the briliant video of Anton Corbijn).
It is a good song, but live, again, is a masterpiece thanks to the third genius in the band who left them in 1995.
Dear Seph, do not underestimate the importance of Alan in the band.
I can’t believe that you never heard this song before… I guess you are a millennial? 😉
But, thank you so much Seph. Your enthusiasm reminds me to not take their music for granted (I am a big fan for 40 years now).

ETS is one of the concert anthems. A notorious song even today. Martin originally wanted a slow ballad - he originally wrote the text as a lullaby for his daughter. Alan eventually turned it into a pop hit. Martin plays guitar in most of his songs, but this riff is perhaps one of his best - apart from the guitar in Never Let Me Down Again, Barrel of Gun or Here is the House. Dave and Mart sing the chorus together - as in most songs, some are outright duets. The music video for the song is legendary, it's a piece of art.

The outro (7:32-9:47) is an interlude called "Crucified". It features Dave Gahan on acoustic guitar & Andrew Fletcher screaming "Crucified!" (8:24-8:27)

The laser sound is produced by filters and accompany the powerful bass on last choruses. DM relly changed their sounds over time because they constantly changed gears. Albums have their signature synthesizer, which sometimes makes them sound a bit alike : arp 2600 for speak and spell, PPG Wave for a broken frame, synclavier and emulator II for Construction time again Some great reward and BC, and the fantasic Emulator III on Violator.

  • @charlesswitzer8378

I guess many find this to be their "signature song." Some find "Just Can't Get Enough" to be their signature song lol. In the end, it doesn't really matter because to me, they will always be a body of work/albums band. But this is the grocery store song sigh. It is certainly their hit -- the type where Tik Tokers think they are some new band they just discovered lmao.

Dave is singing, martin was singing back ground, flood and alen maded a dance track since martin wanted it more of a blues song. Martin pointed out it was a guy who had everything. The resason they are playing the instruments with this album and next was because they were getting killed by people and the newer groups with them saying they were not a real band since they were not playing real instruments in the studio and live on stage.

An interesting observation about this song, which is considered the greatest hit of the band (with Personal Jesus and slightly ahead of Never Let Me Down Again:
There is hardly and DM fan that dislikes this song, but there is also hardly a DM fan who names Enjoy the Silence as their all-time favourite (some do, but only very few). Same for me, this song is an easy S rank for be, but it's not my all-time favourite. It isn't even in my Depeche Mode Top 10 (but might make it into the Top 20 which is still great). But it's kind of interesting that this song in particular, as their "signature song" and the song almost everyone knows (even people who have never heard of the band), hardly makes it into the, let's say Top 5 of the most die-hard DM fans.

To be really honest, It's kind of a surprise that you have not heard this tune before in any kind of context. It's such a well played song from 1990 and forwards. Covers left and right (for better or mainly worse). Even and not to be rude, my grandmother that was born in the late 1920s knew this one. This is like The Beatles kind of big they we're around this time (mainly because it's such a good pop song).
If you really want to know how the song was meant to be, check out the Harmonium Mix, it has Martin Gore on vocals and is a ballad. Pray to the gods that Alan Wilder (with Flood) made this what it is. :)

Some of the Violator era B-sides and alternate versions to hear once you complete the album songs:
    Happiest Girl (Jack Mix)
Sea Of Sin (Tonal Mix - the "Jack" and "Tonal" subtitles sometimes confuse fans; these are the original versions of these two B-sides)
    Sibeling
    Memphisto
    Kaleid
    Enjoy the Silence (Harmonium)
    Personal Jesus (Acoustic)

I know a lot of people like this one, but I don't. I like it yes, never turn it off, blast it on occassiond, but Halo and several others are at the top of the list. This is number 11. I don't think it sounded anything like the video game. I must have heard it wrong. I miss your singing voice.

Again, once you're done with all the songs, go back and listen to the album straight through. The songs aren't really meant to be chopped up into segments. The album is meant to be a *whole* .
