Everything you said about that set up is completely true....I've worked on a lot of outboards in my day, and yes 4 strokes are nice...but these older 2 strokes (especially Yamaha) are just dead reliable. I'll take reliability over noise, smoke, and MPG any day on my smaller boats....big boats, the 4s are definitely nice to have. I have a Yamaha 25 and 70, and both have been amazing. Cool video bro.

I'm learning to repair outboard motors at my Technical colledge, and recently picked up a 2003 yamaha 15hp 2 stroke. It has no spark so I did some tests and discovered that the CDI is bad. New one was ordered and hope to test it out soon. Thanks

Hi, really enjoy your channel. I have 2 of these motors and agree completely they are the best. My 2004 has a 100:1 sticker on it and that’s what I use. I recently saw the identical motor (2009)on Craigslist and the photos clearly show a 50:1 sticker?

If you adjust the butterfly flap which you pointed too and said to mark so you know where to set back to. Well if you adjust a tiny bit you can take a bit of slack out of it helping to open the flap an extra bit for a little bit more air. Just don’t go too far cause it will idle very high but there is a bit of slack in 99% of them motors have the exact same motor and setup, great video btw well explained 👌

@@TRICKEDTINS the 9.9 to 15 hp need reeds adjust , and 9.9 have on the throttle inside the outboard, where the cables meet on the round thing, have little limiter from stainless steel , 9.9 if you look at carb opening , on full throttle does not open full . If you search on google you will find pictures from a guy that did this . And he test 15 , next to 9.9 also need carb adjustment just a little. If yours is not fitted with the limiter , maybe someone else take it off. I have mine from new and was there

Fuel mix is based on the burn of the spark plug, not getting Fouled.
      If the book says 100:1
      Mix and your running
50 parts Fuel to 1 part oil and plugs look good
Burn clean, I like the idea as it Gets better internal lubrication.

Its not HP but torque in middrange that get boat over water pressure and make it go to plane. Cc capacity is important for boat engine to get him, and load over point of max pressure.. Older 2 strokes have much bigger cc engines then newer 4strokes.. And 2 strokes can be retuned to higher power just with 2 thing. . bigger intake&carb and bigger exhaust.. And off you go..

In addition, the 9.9 hp teddy bear has a smaller carburetor throat and the 15 hp carburetor has larger nozzles. At least I saw it in the European versions. There will be a little more power, but with the replacement of the carburettor it will increase properly. Many here also think that there is only a difference in the opening of the intake valves in these older models

Good stuff and thanks for sharing and juat some info in the off road MX world Boyesen sells replacement reeds and these stock reed stops are eliminated completely. If you have thick reeds the top end power will be better and if they are thin then the low end power delivery will be better and the top end will not be due to the thinner reeds will flutter. I know this is an outboard motor but typically the two stroke motor designs tend to follow similar processes. Just an FYI.

    3. How's the long term performance after the swap, speed, mileage?

    • @TRICKEDTINS

We didn't change the carb. Only the reeds. Night and day difference in speed. No additional stress because it's the only difference between the 9.9 and the 15hp. It's basically a true 15hp now instead of a restricted 15hp
