The Most Challenging Bullwhip Repair I Have Ever Attempted - Indiana Jones Style Bullwhip

  • In this video, I'll be challenging myself to a leather bullwhip repair unlike any other repairs I have ever attempted in my entire whip-making career. My friend Reese has sent me a 10ft Indiana Jones Style bullwhip that has been cut in half, and I am going to try my best to splice in new strands and bolsters. My goal is to restore this whip in such a way that it is the same as it was when Reese purchased it. I hope you enjoy!

I’m a new viewer and I normally don’t comment nor do I know a single thing about whips, but I think what you’ve done here is beyond gorgeous, from the handiwork you show to the filming and editing and explanations of the video. I hope very much that more people discover this channel because i thoroughly enjoy it. I look forward to seeing more things from you in the future because you may have given me a new hobby lol

Awesome job, Nick! It takes some huge 'cahoonas' to even attempt a task of such magnitude....just starting to watch and happy to see a new video! Cheers, mate🙂

    Hey Nick,
It’s Great to see you being brave and venturing into new territory! A good flexible adhesive is DAP contact cement in the red can, or barge cement which is used for shoe repair.

Contact cement and hide glue work well too but hide glue is really finicky

You keep saying you'll "get a lot of hate" for the way you're tapering, but when I saw your jigs I thought "wow those are brilliant!"

Hey brother, great video. I've found leather is about 1.5x whatever you need for strand lengths. Example: If you want to resize your strand exactly 4' down on the whip, you can start your trimming at about 6' on the strands and when you are plaiting, it will be within an inch or two of that 4' mark

Thank you for making this video; I'm really enjoying watching you work through this repair while I'm plaiting an 8 foot nylon bullwhip based on a build from a different video you published. 😁

An interesting thing I read about Australian whip makers was that they would sometimes mix eucalyptus oil mixed with the leather conditioner to keep the bugs from eating the leather

Hey nick I was wondering what formula you use to determine what length you need for each strand of a braided layer when you have...
    1. The number of braided layers
    2. Number of strands per braided layers
    3. How long the whip is going to be
And also I need help determining how many braided layers I need per whip design when I know the length.
And also how many strands I need for a given belly determined by the amount of strands from the overlay. Thank you and i love your videos im learning so much.

Your skills in whipmaking never cease to amaze me, and to record it as well, for us to watch and learn... fantastic. Congratulations on an incredible repair.

In splicing new strands into existing lengths, I prefer a more direct splice of each strand directly onto each one, skiving both strands and gluing them together, quickly plaiting them so as to form the bond of the glue into the shape of which the plait is in... I have always felt that if you insert a strand that is not into a whip plaited in the English eye style, the strand will be subject to pull out. Getting the distance for the skive is critical, too thin and long a taper being useless, and to quick a taper is not enough to be of much strength. For what you have there, I would taper about 3/4th to 1 inch of taper to both sides.. There actually is a leather glue, but I think it is the same as a fabric glue, I use "Shoe Goo", which is a great adhesive, not a cement, like CA.

I just wanted to thank you for the quality of your worksmanship both in the whipbuilding process; in addition to how you showcased how much of a daunting task this was for you throughout the process and trusting your skills is what got you through it a lot of people, myself included watching your sheer determination and perseverence even when you doubted yourself. This whole video was worth its weight in gold in every second including wishing batman would come around again. Wish you luck on your continued journey and I hope this video inspires people to persevere😊

How hard would it be to repair the transition area of a bullwhip? And about how expensive? I believe the belly and bolster are broke, there's a "hinge" there, now.

Hi Michael. I am actually planning on making a video about this very topic. You are welcome to send me some photos to my email of the whip if you'd like. I might even consider using your whip for a repair video if you are interested.

lamo i had the same thing happen a couple years ago, i repaired it and its been great since, using all the original strands as well just stagered my repairs using contact cement and you cant even tell it was repaired, i did the entire whip over tho and only lost 2 feet total when it was all done

    • @pipster79
      @pipster79 Рік тому

oh now watching further i see you did it much different, mine i scived both ends of strands and glued them together, different legnths so they wouldnt all be in the same spot of the whip. then replaited. i used contact cement tho as i was told its best for leather as it stays flexible but does a very strong bond with leather. and it also bonds to leather really quick
