- In today’s episode of DIY Willy, I am installing new rear drum brakes on my 2011 Chevy Silverado. I’ll be using new shoes, a hardware kit and new drums.
So follow along as I continue to repair and upgrade my 2011 Chevy Silverado.

You can assemble the top springs to the new shoes with the spreader bar and self adjuster and just set the assembly onto the backing plate and then put your hold down springs thru the backing plate .Same with dis assembly. Take the hood down springs off and lift the shoe assembly off .

If one was to disconnect the arm that the e brake cable goes through how would u recommend getting it back togather if the spring won’t compresS

Yes this is true. Usually the shoes are tight against the drum. Thanks for watching.
So the adjuster self-adjusts? I've seen some videos where they adjust it and spin the drum by hand to test. Also, thanks!!
How you doing Tyler. Yes there no problem adjusting them at install. Sometimes they can get too tight. Either method is fine. I’m comfortable letting them self adjust and others may say no. But honestly I’ve never had a problem with the brakes I’ve installed. Thanks for watching.
Awesome content! I hate brakes too but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. LOL! Great tip to put some grease on that backing plate where the shoes ride. Not many know to do that and it definitely matters! BTW Your truck looks much better than the car that hit you. LOL!
Yes sir gotta do it! At least the back brakes do not wear out so fast.. Yes the car that hit us was actually the 2nd of 3 involved and was a total loss. Felt bad for the driver of that car. However the 1st truck was a GMC he didn’t see us stopped. So he rear ended the Hyundai and caused it to rear end my truck. Thank god for insurance!!! I dropped it off at the shop for repairs yesterday. So 3weeks I should have fixed truck!!
Just hope I can keep my Suzuki Samurai together for another 3 weeks as a daily driver… Fingers crossed 🤞.

Any tips to get the horseshoe clip over the spring washer when reattaching the parking brake? It’s whooping me pretty good.
I use a big set of channel locks to squeeze it back on and the again squeeze it tight together.
Go 3 ft in front of driver tire where parking brake cable splits to two and disconnect
Hey would it be ok to just replace only the brake drum?
And to take it out I just tighten two bolts into the holes and hit it with a hammer till she pops off and just pop the new one in ?
Not recommend due to the pads and drums wear the same to each other. I’ve changed shoes and not drums before but honestly the parts aren’t too expensive and best practice would be to change both. Why do you think you need to change only the drum?
@DIY Willy the inner components were replace I’d say like 8 months ago they just used the same old rusted drum and I’m just looking to replace the drum would that be all I need to do? Pop it off and put the new one on?
Yes would need to remove the old and install the new. Just make sure to inspect the shoes are not grooved or damaged in any way.
How many miles did you have on your truck at the time? I have 80k on mine. Thanks.
It was less than 60k but don’t remember exactly. It has 90+now

what about the wheel cylinders
I didn’t change mine they were in excellent condition. Usually if you see signs of leakage or possibly the brakes hang up then you would want to replace the cylinders.
