@@ritterjon It is possible....in a way. lol For instance, I set up my tiller (same as yours) before I decided to go with the PATs system. The PATs put me 4 inches further away from the tractor. Instead of buying a new PTO shaft, I went to a local tractor sales and supply store and purchased a 540 to 540 rpm shaft extension/adaptor for $28. It adds the exact amount that I was lacking, as it adds 4 inches to the length once hooked up. It also makes it easier to hook up and un-hook the PTO shaft during install and removal. Great video.

Get the quick hitch first. 2) My cutter shaft actually gets shorter at the top of the 3pt lift than at level. I would recommend measuring in multiple places before you cut. But this went well! I thought when you went to shorten your shaft and you went from the locking part of the pto shaft that you weren't going to allow for the shaft having to pull back to connect and disconnect... but glad it worked out
Great job, Jon. Good idea to cut it a little short. Not only will that keep it from binding, but you probably wouldn’t be able to retract it enough to get it on the shaft.
We had a farmer in Vermont many years ago who lost both arms in a P.T.O. It was caused by having a very loose shirt and the sleeves got caught in the shaft. Definitely have to make sure the guard is on and working. Also very nice instructional video. Keep it up. God Bless.
For sure, those PTO shafts are extremely dangerous. I have one without a guard on my brush hog. Even though I’m never off the tractor when it’s running it still make me nervous. Keep on tractoring!

This actually happened to my friend and coworker. He has a kubota L 3800 with a 5' brush hog and was mowing on a pretty steep hill. As he was going down he ran into a small divet or ravine and busted his rear housing. He got lucky, as kubota fixed it under his extended warranty he got. He said he only had about six months left on the warranty. Good job Jon, great video.
Hey Jon, My method was a little different which I’ll explain. I measured from the bolt position on the tiller to the face of the shaft on my Kubota BX25. That distance is 23” in the level position with the tiller lifted. Then I measured my PTO from the bolt hole on the clutch side to the end of the spline and got 33” (a longer PTO than yours). Then I took 23” and subtracted 1/2” so the the PTO will clear the tiller shaft (22.5”). So the amount I must cut off the PTO is 33” - 22.5” = 10.5” on both ends. Wow! I am concerned it will not work. The inner sliding plastic part on the PTO measures only 14” so if I cut off 10.5” that leaves only 3.5” of plastic left. A Really short mid section. I think this is because it’s a longer PTO they provided with the tiller shipment else I’d be cutting off less. Do you think it would work regardless? Thanks for your thought.
Wow, that really only gives your 3.5 inches of plastic guard. That does seem almost too small but it should work for you. Great explanation of how to do this! We get lots of pto shafts brought in to school to be cut, or repaired. It makes me nervous going off other peoples measurements, I give them the third degree on how they measured before I’ll cut anything.
This was a very well done video. Great job! I was wondering if you would have had to do this PTO shorting if you tried it with an QH05 quick hitch first; that is, if the tiller was QH compatible. Just a thought. Again great video.
Great vid Jon! I just had to do the same thing for my tiller. Gloves were key for me (I work at a computer all day) because handling that pto shaft is like wrestling an alligator. slippery greasy and pinches you if you look at it funny.
Update - you are correct and sorry for the misinformation; I went back and measured mine on my BX and indeed it's shortest when the implement is level, and grows longer by a half inch when the implement is raised to the fullest height. Apologies.
Hey Ritter bit so if I add a pto link quick attach my measurements will be different correct. Now I will measure desired pto length from the detent on the implement to the very tip of the pto shsft on tractor right or wrong your thoughts please . Thanks.
I would install your quick attach along with the implement and then find level between the PTO shafts of the tractor and implement. Measure and then subtract an additional 1.5 to 2 inches to more easily hook it up. Keep on tractoring!

I have a compact tractor and my PTO shaft gets shorter when you lift it. I have to watch how high I lift it or it will bottom out on the tractor and the implement.
Wonder if theres a better and cheap way to measure pto shaft then a wobbly tape measure, seeing that it is such a critical measurement, I never been a fan of looks about..........

It's good not to leave too much play in case you put a Quick hitch on will need that shaft to be longer but you have plenty of overlap there! 👍

Now you'll have to demonstrate how to set a slip clutch on the PTO.

Cut the larger plastic and metal first and use the off cut to mark the smaller one by sliding it on flush and mark it at the end.

If you needed 5" why didn't you cut 2 1/2" off each side?
Because a PTO shaft overlaps and cutting just 2 1/2 wouldn’t have been enough.
