- Having played and been disappointed by a lot of modern racing franchises from big developers, I looked back to my childhood and remembered a small browser series I played that impressed me with just how much fun it was for a browser game, drawing from Burnout, Need for Speed, and Twisted Metal, and how just a small team of devs could make something as impressive as this. That game, was Burnin Rubber.

God damn the nostalgia is real with this one! I miss the simplistic era of browser games so much. It wasn’t about having the best graphics or the most amount of content. They were just fun games at their core and sometimes that’s all you need from a video game. Burnin’ Rubber, Redline Rumble, Lose The Heat and Drag Racer V3 were my absolute favourites.
I remember playing Need for Madness and you could design your own cars too, so advanced for a browser game

Burnin' Rubber has been an integral part of my early days on the internet. Not even JUST Burnin' Rubber, actually, a good amount of racing games from Shockwave were, AND still are!
Burnin' Rubber, Drift 'N' Burn, RC Laser Warrior, Sunset Racer, Oversize, Oversize XXL, Redline Rumble, all the way to Ignitro City! 200MPH, Age of Speed, Open Wheel Grand Prix, the list goes on.

@@ianwhite2264 Sounds like a plan! These games didn't have alot of tracks but they were definitely memorable. I didn't have many actual PC games so sites like Shockwave and Miniclip were pretty much my entire world. RCLW is still playable by the way, got all the cars a few months back.

This is one of the few flash games that I remember so clearly to this day, or well, series, because Burnin' Rubber 3, 4 and 5 were absolute bangers that deserve a hall of fame sectiong for flash games.

Something you have forgotten in Burnin Rubber 3 here is that the combat racing game called Death Rally also has firearms and equipments on the cars.
I did know how burnin' rubber games are supposed to be good but they planning BR6 but i HOPE they dont use same assets from previous games

I think i did know BR4 Crashing to an CPU Car is NEARLY BROKEN IT CAN DO ALOT OF DAMAGE THAN ANY WEAPON.
I remember playing so many Shockwave racing games, Burnin Rubber, Sunset Racer, Redline Rumble, Rally Point, Traffic Slam, FFX Runner and FFX Racer, that BMW X3 driving game and Go Kart Go. I miss those days.
As a Sonic and Racing games fan, this video is a moutain of nostalgia and history, shockwave and flash where the best back in the day, nowadays the gaming market as changed where huge AAA companies offer "free" games like these sites used to do, good ol' timez

i legit found out about these games starting with 3 when i was 4 years old and that i just looked up web games to play, and somehow i completed them at that time.
5 felt like a triple a game back then, it was heavily content riddled, wide car selection, and had a lot of fun with putting my team of military boss vehicles in the garage just to see them constantly explode because of how much they've been clipping onto each other

Can't believe someone actually made a video about Burnin' Rubber. I played Burnin Rubber 5 and Crash N Burn A LOT when I was younger. I almost forgot about those games. I really need to replay some of these games. They literally are my childhood.
Your story with these games is almost the exact same as mine, what a nostalgia trip! Family not having a lot of money, time period, the XP computer, all the websites, the "introduction game" to the BR series... Honestly I thought that nobody would ever remember these games, let alone make a video on them. I spent so many hours on these flash game websites that even my 2000+ hours now in some games would probably pale in comparison.
BR4 is absolutely goated. As a kid, an open world racing game with actual progression system and customization options that you can play On the freaking web seemed so cool to me. Felt like a mini Need for Speed or something haha. This brings me way back. Thanks for this video.
ZipZaps RC were my gateway drug into RC racing , back then youd get a ZipZap , then a Xmods and after that a Kyosho Mini-Z. After that youd get into club racing and I never left... 14 years later.

Micro Machines(1991) lets you race with motorboats, helicopters, tanks and more while Micro Machines is way older than Burning Rubber or GTA III or any GTA game.

bro no joke i was playing the new burnin rubber multiplayer game just a few weeks ago, there were no players online but it was still fun to mess around for a bit by myself, crazy to see you make a video about one of my favorite childhood franchises :D
I honestly forgot these types of games existed so watching this video was a nice refresher for me. I almost forgot how fun these web browser games were back in the day. They were short and simple, yet still very fun games to play. There was this one flash skate game that I used to play as a kid. Its been a long time so I had to look it up to see if I could try to remember it. Luckily I did, and the game was called Street Sesh. I don't know if you heard of that game before. But it was such a fun little skateboarding game. I used to play that game a lot when I was younger, and I had some great memories playing it as well. I don't know if these web browser games are still as popular as they were back then or if they need to make a comeback. But one thing is for sure. They brought us a lot of joy and fun. And I'm glad you covered these types of games.
Thanks for this video, I kept searching for a racing flash game that had a R34 Skyline and BMW M6 for years and years, now I finally know what its called, I played the first Burnin Rubber so many times back in the day.

I recognised that this video was gonna be about Burnin' Rubber INSTANTLY. I never expected that you would make a video about this, since barely anyone seems to know about this game anymore. I loved this game a lot as a kid, though I also barely really played it much. I played BR5 quite a bit and that's all I really remember, but Crash n' Burn was definitely my most played game when I was a kid. I'm really excited that they're making a 6th game now, can't wait to see how it will be

Excellent overview and analysis. The Burnin’ Rubber series provided so much nostalgic fun and injected ‘soul’ into the racing, worlds, and awesome weapons. It’s a hidden or forgotten gem amongst other Flash racing games. I’d like to see how Burnin’ Rubber 6 turns out.

Back in 2010/2011, me and my brother would sit at our family desktop computer and play either BR3 or BR4. Thanks to the weapons that were added from 3, my brother would be managing the firearms on one side of the keyboard while I would manage the driving on the other side and we would have great fun.
My favourite memories were the bosses in BR3, especially the tank you had to fight at the end 😎
These games were our childhood and I imagine for a lot of others as well.
This made me remember a car game that i played the hell out as a kid but totally forgot about: crashday. that was fun, racing and you could have guns, a track creator i spent evenings on. good times.
The redline rumble car select screen just sent me back to childhood, remember that select screen being such a cool thing.

You should look into Hot Wheels: Extreme Racing, its a great version of the race with different vehicle types aswell as weapon mechanic. You could change from car to plane to boat mid race, was a childhood favourite of mine. Released all the way back in 2001 on PS1!

You should check out burnin rubber 5 mods, most notably burnin rubber 5a made by mars jetblack. It completely redesigns burnin rubber 5s campaign, adds dual guns like in 3 and 4, and alot more including flying helicopters. I have some old videos on it if your curious

I used to watch a bunch of burnin rubber videos when I was younger, just seeing cars with guns shooting up each other blowing up. It just seemed so awesome to me back then. This game even gave me my love for car combat games. With it still my favorite game Genre to this day.

Burnin' Rubber 4 was awesome, played the hell out of that while blasting Bodies on the background. I also played a lot of one where you drove a Caterham over an infinite wood bridge, that was quite fun.

This is one of those games from my middle school days where I don't remember playing it but I recognize the visuals and know that I have played it at some point. The weapons, menus, powerups, and gameplay are all familiar to me.
The Burnin' Rubber series really had a great impact on my childhood. I still get Goosebumps to this day when I think about it.

These games remind of the Death Race movie that came in the 2000s, very nostalgic.
You just now reminded me of that movie, I thought it was some kind of mad max spinoff
I remember having nostalgia of burnin rubber 3 a year ago and decided to download it for the fun of it. Couple weeks later, I found out that there was a hard mod for it and downloaded it. Best and worst decision I have made.

4 to 6 hours of content? From a broswer HTML game? That's legit more content than modern racing games like NFS and such if you ignore the cutscenes in these modern games which YOU SHOULD. Seriously modern days now struggle to go up to 10 hours at best and that includes the cutscenes which is pathetic.

I remember there being another good racing game on Shockwave that I can't seem to find now. It had formula-like cars, tracks free-floating in space, daily missions and a track editor. I remember that one of the ways to cheese points for daily goal was to build a downwards corkscrew track and skip no more than 2 layers at a time (or it'll respawn you), but it also had a really decent handling model.
I honestly couldn't tell ya, maybe the LegacyShockwave or Flashpoint guys might know

Can you do a video essay on the aesthetic of NFS 2015? I'm playing it recently for the first time and, especially above 1080p, the visuals are quite breathtaking in a way i haven't seen in many other racing games. The use of colour washes over my brain in the most satisfying way, time and time again. It's really blowing my mind that it came out back in 2015
