I just wish BeamNG had a little more immersive world, like having a human driver model, or a story to play. It's an awesome sandbox, but barely anything more as of now sadly

The truth is that if it weren't for the modding community, Asetto Corsa would barely be a game. unfortunately AC brought a bad culture to the racing game community: "If handling doesn't look realistic or is arcade = not good"

Is handling even realistic in AC? Whenever I played ACC the cars felt like they were on ice. Tires had zero grip and brakes were non existent. Maybe it’s the fact the game has zero motion blur so it’s impossible to get a sense of your speed other than looking at the speedo. That’s what I hate about sims, they think having zero motion blur is better but it’s so unrealistic

@@theweekndxo7438 I get that. I'm no car expert, much less a racecar driver, but sometimes the car (or more accurately, my very cheap wheel) feels kinda alien. Although, I think this kinda slidiness makes drifting a lot easier: for example, I can't do it in beamng, only spinouts there. And what's with that weird-ass powercurve? Really, why in AC there's no power on idle RPM, it makes me feel like an idiot every time I stall when trying to move without a clutchdump. Add to that the slidiness, and you can't do a normal launch without wheelspin or nearly stalling. Wouldn't recommend for a "realistic" driving experience. Still very fun though.

AC is the best “car game”. Because it allows people world wide to experience niche car cultures without having to IRL because of the mod community. No other game allows you to race 90’s BTCC, race civics on the Wangan, drift every course at Ebisu, Rally, and Arab drift a Camry down a sandy straightaway all without leaving the game. It’s definitely not a game I go to for racing, but it’s the game I go to when I want to be immersed in some weeb car culture. I love it.

The elitism that people have when it comes to sim racers makes me sad. I adore games like Grid, NFS, Blur, and I’ve been playing Midnight Club 2 lately. I love arcade racers. But so many people dog on them and it really feels like AC and its community amplified the outright hatred a lot of people have towards arcade racers. It’s just a real downer. Especially since a lot of the simple arcade racing franchises are either dead or completely revised.

@torrentplayer it isn't the biggest deal but I hate that arcade racers have such shit wheel support. Even with games that DO have wheel support, playing it that way makes it borderline IMPOSSIBLE compared to when using a controller. Horizon 4 and Dirt 5 are personal examples I've experienced (anyone that says Dirt 5 is too easy hasn't played it with a racing wheel). Arcade racers, just like their name suggests, started in the arcades. Need For Speed Carbon and Need For Speed Underground both had sick as hell arcade ports. Outrun, Daytona, Rush, Sega Rally, Cruis'n, all games that started in arcades. We shouldn't be stuck JUST using racing wheels for the overly serious competitive sims. Let us relax and have fun and ENJOY ourselves. With either a wheel or a controller.

The elitism is always unnecessary and childish, but to be fair, in my experience, this kind of people only sh*ts on games that try to cheapen the simulation, but are marketed as the full sims. Forza motorsport, gt7 and f1 24 are good examples. Thay are all very, very fine games, but the moment they are marketed as the realbdriving sim, or the most advanced blah blah blah, they are really asking to be kicked by the full sim community.

While AC might not be the best racing game, it certainly hits the nail in a lot of niche spots. When someone new in the Sim scene ask what first game they should buy I always say AC. With 10 dollars you get the game and all the dlc's and the mods will keep you entertained until you can have the money and the experience to play something like iRacing. Most of my hours on AC are regular driving on scenic roads, that time spent is what made me love the game so much. Great essay!

  • @CyanRooper

On one hand, it's amazing what people managed to accomplish by modding Assetto Corsa, creating their own Tokyo Xtreme Racers or modern recreations of 90s Need for Speed games or recreating classic F1 grids etc.
But on the other hand, it's annoying how it led to this elitism among sim racers who look their noses down on anything that isn't Assetto Corsa. You can't recreate the TXR campaign in AC even with an actual community of people, you can't recreate the caRPG elements of old GT games in AC, you can't recreate the atmosphere and customisation of the "golden era" NFS games in AC.
I genuinely think the sim racing elitism played a part in the decline of arcade racers and that not only negatively affected racing game fans, it negatively affected fans of games as a whole.
Also I can definitely see why the most downloaded AC tracks are just picturesque roads instead of insanely accurate recreations of real-life racetracks: driving can be very therapeutic. It's why those "sad hours in Assetto Corsa" videos exist and have so many views. I used to do something similar in NFS Most Wanted 2012 and Gran Turismo 6 (games that are hated by their respective communities) where I would just pick a car at random (and a track at random in GT6) and just drive aimlessly, enjoying the car sounds (in MW 2012, not the weird vacuum noises in GT6) and the soundtrack, feeling my stress get washed away by the experience.

    • @IlhamParamartha

NFS Most Wanted '12 and Gran Turismo 6 were ridiculously overhated by the community.
Yes, naming the game "Most Wanted" wasn't the most honest idea, but people ignore that the game is actually pretty solid. However, I would agree the game lacked that "something" to be more memorable.
And Gran Turismo 6...I recall a lot of people saying Gran Turismo 5 was way better.
Nostalgia can do a lot of damage.
Yes, GT5 was a fun game (and maybe better than a lot of modern ones), but as a GAME itself compared to GT6, was too messy.
People complained how 6 was different to the rest of the series, when in reality it does the necessary to be different, because in reality, most of the Gran Turismo games until 6 are mostly the same. For the good and the bad stuff

Actually, someone is working on the CaRPG side with something called Assetto Evoluzione. The creator is basically making a GT style game using unity, and Assetto's race record system. Its a separate program that launches AC, and when you win races you get money, and can buy cars with that money. Mod cars are automatically sorted and given costs. Its not perfect, but it shows how the idea of a GT style career can work.
What frustrates me, is how many sim racers specifically say they don't want an optional GT style career mode. They are against an optional career mode that gives you a sense of direction. Maybe that's why I don't hear about Assetto Evoluzione a lot.

      the arcade games erased themself
NFS has a main part in the destruction of arcades.. with bad release after bad release and full ignoring the player base
the sim racing community has its couple big simulators that are running since over 1 decade.
(AC, Raceroom, iRacing, Rfactor and the couple Rallye games which are on their own) +
GT7 which is simcade and totally crushed the new Forza and BeamNG which is a complete monopol and the only game that offers this kind of organic/ realistic destruction.
they all simply do their own thing, add own flavours and quirks and the people love it for a good reason.
And the arcade games have settled for Forza Horizon-esque games or silly NFS games with tons of features that nobody ever wanted.
and in between some free to play games and soon Solar Crown, which looks atleast somehow like something that sticks a bit out from the others but still hasnt really flashed me on first sight and still has many similaritys to Horizon and Motorfest.
Games like Burnout, Grid, NFS for tuners and the underground szene, NFS shift-esque/ prostreet-esque, Wreckfest, Splitsecond, Blur, Midtown madness are totally missing from the industry since way to long.

AC (not to be confused with AC, AC, AC or AC) is like M.U.G.E.N. for racing games. Modding it, molding it into your idea of a perfect racing game is the reason to get it. That and it's cheap. So cheap that it's one of those games you can find in any Steam library. That, and the sheer breadth of the mods can't be beat. I'm not talking about cars or tracks, I'm talking shit like the HUD or indepth replay options in a generation bereft of replays in general, let alone the angles seen in stuff like old Codies games. Hell, I once saw a replay parser, which allows you to export replays to Blender. It's unfortunate that it can't stand on its own without those mods, at least in my opinion. It makes getting into it a bigger ask than games like Skyrim or other games with big modding communities, where there's a half decent game in there before you add in all the anime mods. But, I'll take that over some mobile-ported-to-PC, generic street racer slop with AI voices.

If you haven't ever done it, I urge you to pick any car on ac, and unpack the data and just click through the files. It's so easy to understand and do whatever you want with the cars. That's why I think it's by far the best sim for anyone that is a car enthusiast first, and someone who likes racing games second. You can also dig through the internet for sound mods and throw them on any car, either using content manager or just copy pasting them and renaming the .bank file and the guts of the guid file.

One thing that made me love this game is the VR support. Most arcade games don't have VR support, and this is the only one where I can roam an open world map with traffic with my friends in virtual reality, and do stuff like street races, goofy minigames, cop chases. Stuff you wouldn't be able to do anywhere else in VR, (Except for beamng, but the performance in that is so bad at the moment)
Sure i'd love to play stuff like nfs and other racing games more. But its really hard to go back to a flat screen after you've played a racing game in VR, you genuinely feel scared of how fast you're going, and in a race where you have people side to side of you and you can look around at them, it really gets the adrenaline flowing.
Add VR support to more racing games, I'll play more racing games.

I love how unforgiving the physics can be, but how much that’s related to my own inputs. I love being able to drive cars which I’ll never be able to see or hear or definitely drive in real life, on tracks that I love. AC is what I like to call a "Sunday drive sim". You play this kind of game simply for the love of driving. To me it doesn't matter there isn't a career mode or any other gameplay mechanic because driving is its own reward to me. I'm happy to just jump in and take a chill drive up a mountain road or hotlap whatever race car I fancy around my favorite tracks. And realism is a crucial aspect to that because that's simply the type of driving I enjoy. I would agree though that AC debateably isn't the best of this category as it's up against the likes of BeamNG, AMS2, RaceRoom, and I'd even include rally sims in general here.

AC is nowhere near being the beat racing game ever. Even with mods it's barely even a game. It's a racing simulator that aims to make as realistic a driving experience as possible, and it does a very good job of this. If you enjoy driving or racing then the fun is inherently there, but the same can be said of any other racing sim.
Sadly as he said with the comparison to Gmod (this holds true for all racing sims) there is no attempt to take the great base physics and racing experience and make an actually fun and compelling game atound it. This is fine, it's not a problem since that's not what AC aims to be.
But games like Forza horizon, and older GT games or need for speed that actually make an effort to make the experience fun and engaging outside of the driving are much better games. Heck, even the F1 game career mod is a much better game than AC.

the elitism stems from this distinction and its an important one.. its common in online racing sims for drivers to pull over and wait for another driver to re-join the track if they knocked them off the road.. theres a level of sportsmanship in sim racing that isnt present at that level in any other genre ive played including other driving games

And sometimes i just want to cruise on a tight mountain road in an Italian sports car with traffic and AC does that for me perfectly. So yeah, with mods, AC is the perfect driving simulator

I have countless hours on Assetto Corsa. I always focused more on the racing and not so much (but still do) on cruising. I've spent so many hours just hotlapping in practice mode with varying cars and tracks. I understand this might become boring quickly for many people. Also lots and lots of random online lobbies.
The moment it totally took off for me, was when I joined a private discord server and started participating in their leagues. Everything clicked with that configuration. Assetto helped communities create so many events. In this discord, we had 4 different league categories with seasons. Each season they would change the base car and calendar. They searched for good quality car mods and tracks. I've downloaded so much content through there, and all those tracks were jems. And they had a racing director, stewards, live commentary on twitch. It really feels like being a real racer in a real league. Getting to race with the same people every week is so much better than random strangers. We raced and then we discussed about our performance, we felt genuinely sorry if we crashed, and wins and podiums felt really special.
The game can be daunting if you go in it alone, but if you follow a community to help you discover the best mods, then everything becomes much better.

and LFM now gives every one that opportunity with out having to join a private group.. maybe its because im a late comer but i really dont understand the criticism of AC as a game.. ive always seen it as an open source sim platform. the criticism i agree with are more to do with its age and some of its weaker physics issues like the suspension modelling..

AC is basically like the Ravenfield/gmod of racing games with its modding community. You can go around nurgburgring on a banana or race around wangan on a t-rex. And I’m gonna say, it’s worth the money. I literally saved my allowance to get AC. Though, there are other racing sims that are better than AC like LFS. Live for Speed has a better feeling in driving and the best part of it, it’s free and you have an option to buy the licenses to get the full experience. Though in modern versions of LFS, it also has mods in it. So if you want just pure driving or racing, go with LFS or other racing sims, but if you want to drive wherever you want with whatever car you want in the comfort of your home, Assetto Corsa is the go to game for that.

Talking about Assetto Corsa is kinda of a nightmare for the ridiculous amount of people that swear like it can replace everything and anything.
It IS everything people talk about, honestly. The problem, its so blown out of proportion thanks to elitists that its a bit hard to truly appreciate it. Its essentially the Minecraft of racing games. You can do ANYTHING so long as you find the proper community for it.
I'd argue the only problem AC has, its that you have to do a bunch of things to get into actually driving and playing the game.
Its something NO game should require you to do at all, but as a newcomer to the game and to sim racing in general, setting up AC with Content Manager and Pure is easier than modding ANY old nfs game or etc. I believe it's major downside is clearly blown out of proportion.
The thing is, AC will never be the only racing game you need. AC doesnt have Burnout's takedowns. AC doesn't have MC3 or UG2's customization, and it doesn't have everything.
AC will never be a replacement for anything, it will be its own thing. TXR games and SRP are different things, and the joy i get from driving and cruising with other people in SRP is different than what im going to feel while playing through the TXR games.
It's a game of its own, that gives you near unlimited freedom to look for what you want to enjoy, and what you want to experience with the base sim physics and near unlimited mod support it has.
Also, fuck No Hesi, since the type of people that it has brought recently are exactly those that swear that it can replace anything.

That's an aspect of AC (and most sims, really) that I think either gets glossed over or undermined by people who aren't into the sim/simcade racers; You can LEARN from these titles. Driving simulators are unique in that way.
Where flight simulators need an elaborate setup to be anything close to the real thing (and I still wouldn't recommend trying to fly a plane because you play MFS), 90% of what you learn from a driving sim translates directly to the real world. Especially when it comes to keeping calm and knowing what to do when you have a car on the edge of control.
Good luck with your drifting adventure!

AC is the game made for people who just love plain driving, not specifically racing, not specifically drifting and not specifically any discipline that you can think of but just driving, i think AC gives you the perfect amount of control over the cars and game for you to do whatever you please to the point where just focusing on one specific niche doesn't have to be the be all end all to the game, you can truly do whatever you please and attempting to be near sighted with the game saying "Oh but where's the progression?" or "Where's the matchmaking and customization?" will make you just simply not enjoy the game. if you're reading this and think assetto corsa is overhyped i want you to try something different, go drift on irohazaka, go cut up on the shuto, go for a cruise on the LA canyons or even partake in a GT3 race with the thousands of clubs available to join. finally i'd like to thank whoever read this through for hearing me out and fastminer for making this amazing video, god bless brothers.

This video made me finally understand why i never really liked AC. I found joy in racing games growing up mostly through career campaigns or racing against friends. So the concept of fun for me was always in the challenges and completionism. Since AC never had any of this, especially in the modded culture, it just never felt fun to me. Cruising around the wangan felt pointless, doing track days in Nordschleife felt unintuitive, doing an actual race felt like a hassle to set up.
Besides, you have to really look out for controller mods, because this game wasn't made for controllers or keyboards AT ALL. I'm from a third world country, i can't just simply buy a wheel. Most wheels here cost a entire monthly wage's worth of money. I'm not going to stop eating just so i can do the funny cruise in AC.

The vanilla game on console is so underwhelming that I wondered what all the fuss was about AC. It has so little content, didn't do much to invest the player in the game and want to stick with it and develop their skills, that I returned to the Gran Turismo franchise and dabbled with DiRT Rally, DR 2.0 and Project Cars 2. I didn't miss AC on console and it remained in its box.
I got a (low-end) PC at the start of this year and thought I'd give modded AC a try. NOW I understand what the fuss is about. The *community* has made it into the game it should have been and I can lose hours just trying one of the 2,000 cars I've downloaded on a variety of tracks or open roads. I soend the majority of my time on Gran Turismo 7 because it has solid driving and stunning visuals, but modded AC fills a different niche for me. It delivers content I can't get on any console where I can drive a Ford Falcon XY GTHO around Bathurst, or a Brabham BT19 around historic Spa, or a Matra-Simca MS670 around Le Mans. I'm terrible, of course, but I don't care.
I don't think the *racing* is especially good, and I don't have the patience or interest to download mod files to improve AI, so for me AC fulfills a niche driving experience that I can't find on more social games like GT7 or EA WRC. And thats exactly what I want for it.
Great video, and thank you for pointing out the arrogance of self-important sim racers who gate-keep what is and what is not acceptable to drive as a racing game.

Saying Assetto Corsa is "the only racing game you need" "Go with AC and forget about NFS or F1" is pretty off base. It's like claiming "Garry's Mod is the only sandbox game you'll ever need," and I don't get why people keep saying that.
To me, AC is more like your "first step into sim racing" or "the first sim racing game to try". It’s perfect for exploring different racing genres so you can find what you enjoy and then dive into more specialized sim racing games from there or just stay there to explore a niche subgenre in Sim Racing (i.e. Touge, Highway, etc).
Even though sim racing is more accessible these days, it can still be pricey and hard to get into, and the chances of not liking it are higher because of how complex the genre and the scene can be.
I've met dozens of people on my local sim groups asking where to start and ending with selling their Sim Rig because "it's hard to set up" and "I just want to up and go racing".
So, is it a "Good Racing Games"? No. i rather play something like Forza Horizon, ACC, and heck even Forza Motorsport.
But is it a good "Car Simulator" game? i would argue, in this current state, in this genre is Yes.

Thanks for this video! I did not know you had to mod AC to make it fun. I’ve owned AC for 2 years, touched it once and found the experience horrible. Everyone who talks about this game being the greatest fails to mention that modding is literally required to have a good time. I guess they all assume everyone already knows this. I did not. Thanks to this video, now I do.

I remember tinkering a little with Assetto Corsa mods, trying to get a feel for it and did a couple of races to check it out here and there. But I dropped the game eventually due to lack of interest (and sometimes disk space). Though I do still keep an eye on the Shutoko Revival Project scene, since that more or less makes me think of picking it up again (thanks to TXR).
That being said though, I still look forward for the new TXR game more than anything else. Here's to wish all the best for Genki Racing Project.

The physics, especially when using the capabilities of CSP, are more comprehensive and less problematic than any consumer alternatives I'm aware of.

I played assetto corsa on playstation for hunderd of hours, i never got tired for months even tho there was little to do, because the essence of the game is "driving" and i liked it.
Even tho it's something a few players would like, that's why modded assetto corsa is light years more liked and played than normal assetto corsa.
I'm the type of simracer that prefers simulators rather than arcade games (i play ACC and Rfactor 2 too) but i don't call people that play fh5 "kids" just because they like playing an arcade game rather than a simulator, play whatever you like to play because the essence of racing games isn't only the handling physics but also enjoying the cars and enjoy driving them, that's it.

Back then, I really enjoyed playing Assetto Corsa, and I still am today. The problem with it is that it will requires wheel, gear, and other stuff to be able to play it smoothly. Also the setup has to be set all the time, and as I grown up, I have less time to spend with it, and eventually left them in the dust.
I would still say that it’s a good game, because of what you can do with the price it offers. But fun wise, there’s more out there that can offer entertainment, including some mobile games that you can play it anywhere any time

Nah barely. BeamNG earns that title way more. The main thing in garry's mod is that it's so fun just to fool around. If you don't know how to mod yourself, you can't even be creative in AC, while in Garry's mod everyone can let their (lack of) creativity run wild with a low barrier to entry.
Even in terms of sims. AC only sims the suspension and wheels, Beam sims the physics of the entire car, it feels way more immersive, combined with giving you way more freedom.
In AC it's not fun to fool around, it takes itself way too serious. At least if you crash in BeamNG it looks epic and feels fun. Ever since I discovered BeamNG I totally forgot AC even existed until this video.

I agree with you, but as you touched on, Assetto Corsa’s most popular tracks and mods are just driving.
It appeals more to real car enthusiasts who’s got more grounded experience driving real cars on real roads, where you are coming from an arcade and gamer’s perspective. Which will naturally draw you towarda BeamNG because it’s more fun, but you will never want to crash a car irl

I think partly why people like it so much is that I believe on lower end wheel systems, the driving experience is so enjoyable that you don't care all that much about anything else. I could hotlap the Nordschleife with a porsche 962 for hours on end, just thru enjoyment of what I think the best force feedback, and an enjoyable physics for me personally, also sim racing as a niche I feel like has grown, since other racing games have gotten worse for single player. If you are going to have a bad single player experience, why not making the driving more enjoyable

I really want to love AC, but I've never been able to get comfortable with the stability of the rear end. I just find it very hard either in the cars or the FFB to feel when anything is going on back there.
More than that, I dislike the inconsistency of mod content (Some are amazing, some are trash) and the fact that you have to take some pretty janky workarounds in order to do what I consider basic race mechanics.
That being said, it is also the only sim that allows you to experience some very niche, rare things - A personal favorite is 1920s cars with period authentic tracks. AMS2 is my personal go to, since I think the consistency of content is much greater there and I enjoy the racing experience much more. But I think AC is a great game for anyone with a modestly niche interest in, "Something cars related that most sims don't touch on".
I appreciate you spending some time on these elements, as though I respect AC like crazy, I get a little annoyed when people talk as if the race mechanics offered are beyond most of the competition. Still, it is the only sim that lets me experience a healthy amount of 60s sports cars!

One point i'd like to add in favor of assetto is it's pricing, as someone who lives in a 3rd world country (Brasil mencionado), all racing games are expensive by themselves, counting the DLCs they can go up to 8x times the pricing of AC's ultimate pack. Not to mention that it's in almost every steam sale for 80% of discount with the DLCs included, the same applies to ACC but having less frequent discounts.
Another point i'd like to make is that after 700ish hours on the controller and 1600 more on the wheel in the span of 8 years I've owned this game, it's pretty safe to say that the way you can dance on the limit is pretty unique, I'm not sure how realistic it is but it sure is immersive and rewarding (after it clicks) and I think that's what makes this game so appealing, what other game you can knife edge something like the tuned 86 and then just switch to drifting it around every corner without changing a single setting?
Beam's Just now getting there after many years and I'm all here for it (especially with career mode and beamlr), but Assetto remains the main go-to to fill many niches and fantasies.
